0:00:05 > 0:00:08Labour says the UK should stay in a customs union

0:00:08 > 0:00:16after Brexit, because of trade and the Northern Irish border.

0:00:16 > 0:00:19The shadow Brexit Secretary says the new deal will be better for trade

0:00:19 > 0:00:25and the Northern Irish border and will have the backing of MPs.

0:00:25 > 0:00:27The time is now coming for the Prime Minister,

0:00:27 > 0:00:29because the majority in Parliament does not back her approach

0:00:29 > 0:00:33to a customs union.

0:00:33 > 0:00:37Will assess the shift is the government maintains leaving the

0:00:37 > 0:00:40customs union is vital for future trade deals.

0:00:40 > 0:00:41Reports from Eastern Ghouta says Syria government

0:00:41 > 0:00:43airstrikes are continuing, despite a ceasefire

0:00:43 > 0:00:44plan agreed at the UN.

0:00:44 > 0:00:46And tributes to one of Bollywood's leading ladies, Sridevi,

0:00:46 > 0:00:53who's died at the age of 54.

0:00:53 > 0:00:56And song and celebration bring the Pyeongchang Games,

0:00:56 > 0:01:02Britain's best Winter Olympics yet, to a close.

0:01:18 > 0:01:19Good evening.

0:01:19 > 0:01:22The Shadow Brexit Secretary has confirmed that Labour wants the UK

0:01:22 > 0:01:26to remain in a customs union with the EU after Brexit.

0:01:26 > 0:01:29Sir Keir Starmer told the BBC's Andrew Marr Show that a new treaty,

0:01:29 > 0:01:32replicating the existing customs arrangement, would be best

0:01:32 > 0:01:35for the economy and would respect the referendum result.

0:01:35 > 0:01:38The Prime Minister is committed to leaving both the single market

0:01:38 > 0:01:39and the customs union.

0:01:39 > 0:01:41She's expected to outline the Government's position

0:01:41 > 0:01:44in more detail this week.

0:01:44 > 0:01:51Our political correspondent, Ben Wright, reports.

0:01:51 > 0:01:53For the first time there is clear-blue policy water

0:01:53 > 0:01:55between Labour and the Tories over Brexit.

0:01:55 > 0:01:57In a speech tomorrow, Jeremy Corbyn will confirm his party

0:01:57 > 0:02:01would keep the UK in a customs union with the EU after Brexit.

0:02:01 > 0:02:03Crunch time is now coming for the Prime Minister

0:02:03 > 0:02:06because the majority in Parliament does not back her approach

0:02:06 > 0:02:08to a customs union.

0:02:08 > 0:02:11Labour's Brexit spokesman said the UK would be better off teaming

0:02:11 > 0:02:15up with the EU to reach new trade deals with other countries.

0:02:15 > 0:02:17Obviously, it's the only way realistically to get

0:02:17 > 0:02:19tariff-free access.

0:02:19 > 0:02:21It's really important for our manufacturing base

0:02:21 > 0:02:24and nobody can answer the question how you keep your commitment to no

0:02:24 > 0:02:28hard border in Northern Ireland without a customs union.

0:02:28 > 0:02:30As an EU member, we are currently in the European customs

0:02:30 > 0:02:34union and the idea behind it is pretty simple.

0:02:34 > 0:02:36A single set of tariffs is imposed on goods imported

0:02:36 > 0:02:39from outside the EU.

0:02:39 > 0:02:43Goods can then move freely without tariffs around the bloc.

0:02:43 > 0:02:47But members cannot do their own trade deals.

0:02:47 > 0:02:51Some Labour MPs want their party to go further and commit to joining

0:02:51 > 0:02:53the single market, too.

0:02:53 > 0:02:56It's a massive hit on our economy if we leave the single market,

0:02:56 > 0:02:57if we leave the customs union.

0:02:57 > 0:02:59It's a massive hit to peace in Northern Ireland

0:02:59 > 0:03:01if we leave the customs union.

0:03:01 > 0:03:03These are core Labour values.

0:03:03 > 0:03:05But Brexit-supporting Labour MPs argue the party risks

0:03:05 > 0:03:07betraying their own voters.

0:03:07 > 0:03:08You're talking about...

0:03:08 > 0:03:09Come on, Stella!

0:03:09 > 0:03:12There are all these things - we'll stay in a customs union,

0:03:12 > 0:03:14we'll stay in a single market.

0:03:14 > 0:03:17The decision was quite clear to leave and there in the North,

0:03:17 > 0:03:21Labour voters voted very, very clear...

0:03:21 > 0:03:24Are you going to rat on them or not?

0:03:24 > 0:03:26The Brexit negotiation is not only a haggle between the UK

0:03:26 > 0:03:28Government and the EU.

0:03:28 > 0:03:31Parliament's role is critical, too.

0:03:31 > 0:03:35Theresa May does not have an overall majority in the Commons and a number

0:03:35 > 0:03:38of Tory MPs also argue that the UK should have a customs

0:03:38 > 0:03:42union with the EU.

0:03:42 > 0:03:43So a vote, when it comes, could force the Government

0:03:43 > 0:03:47to change its position.

0:03:47 > 0:03:50The Government insists the UK must be free to have an independent trade

0:03:50 > 0:03:53policy after Brexit outside the customs union.

0:03:53 > 0:03:56Labour say they want to join a customs union.

0:03:56 > 0:03:57What does that mean?

0:03:57 > 0:04:00Is it like Turkey, which has a customs union but only in goods,

0:04:00 > 0:04:04but not in agriculture, not in services, not in finance?

0:04:04 > 0:04:06Is that what we want for Britain?

0:04:06 > 0:04:09Will we take rules in certain sectors but not in others?

0:04:09 > 0:04:13Liam Fox also said the Government would try to persuade all Tory MPs

0:04:13 > 0:04:16about the Government's position before putting a trade bill before

0:04:16 > 0:04:19MPs, which, at the moment, looks like it could be defeated

0:04:19 > 0:04:26if Labour joined Tory rebels in calling for a new customs union.

0:04:26 > 0:04:27Ben is here now.

0:04:27 > 0:04:30How significant is this shift from Labour

0:04:30 > 0:04:36on a post-Brexit customs union?

0:04:37 > 0:04:41Potentially, very. The government view is that it wants to see

0:04:41 > 0:04:45frictionless trade with the EU after Brexit. It's talked about having a

0:04:45 > 0:04:49customs agreement of some sort, but not a customs union, because

0:04:49 > 0:04:53ministers say it's imperative to Brexit that the UK can pull anchor

0:04:53 > 0:04:58and go out into the world and do its own trade deals, but Labour has been

0:04:58 > 0:05:01moving slowly in the other direction, and now its commitment to

0:05:01 > 0:05:04a customs union is hugely significant, because you have a

0:05:04 > 0:05:09trade deal that will be put in front of MPs in the next few weeks or

0:05:09 > 0:05:13months, and a handful of MPs, Tory MPs, insist that should be used to

0:05:13 > 0:05:17try and persuade the government to commit to a customs union, and if

0:05:17 > 0:05:22Labour as a block vote with those Tory MPs, a government defeat is

0:05:22 > 0:05:25possible, and that could take us into vote of confidence to retreat,

0:05:25 > 0:05:31so it could be very significant. May is a huge speech to make on Friday,

0:05:31 > 0:05:33and that will be watched very carefully to see how that clarifies

0:05:33 > 0:05:35the government position.

0:05:35 > 0:05:37There has been fighting around the rebel-held area

0:05:37 > 0:05:39of Eastern Ghouta in Syria, despite a ceasefire resolution

0:05:39 > 0:05:41passed at the UN Security Council.

0:05:41 > 0:05:43Clashes on the ground and airstrikes have continued,

0:05:43 > 0:05:45but at a much reduced rate.

0:05:45 > 0:05:47French and German leaders have appealed to President Putin to make

0:05:47 > 0:05:49the Syrian government honour the ceasefire.

0:05:49 > 0:05:57Caroline Hawley reports.

0:05:58 > 0:06:02In Eastern Ghouta today, a measure of calm after a week-long storm of

0:06:02 > 0:06:06air strikes. In small numbers, people ventured out from underground

0:06:06 > 0:06:11shelters to assess the damage, but there were reports of air strikes

0:06:11 > 0:06:16continuing in some parts of the rebel held enclave.Today is the

0:06:16 > 0:06:27first day of the ceasefire resolution. Still there is a warlike

0:06:27 > 0:06:36atmosphere, still shelling, but it is less bad than before. The vote

0:06:36 > 0:06:39last night for a month-long ceasefire didn't specify exactly

0:06:39 > 0:06:41when it would start or how it would implemented, and there's another

0:06:41 > 0:06:48problem. In Eastern Ghouta, it's a disparate group of rebels fighting

0:06:48 > 0:06:51the regime, including some extremist elements that have been linked to

0:06:51 > 0:06:54Al-Qaeda leader, and the ceasefire doesn't cover them. Government

0:06:54 > 0:06:58forces are massed around the edge of the enclave, with reports of clashes

0:06:58 > 0:07:04as they try and advance. Tonight, we spoke to the most powerful group on

0:07:04 > 0:07:07the ground, Jaysh Al Islam, which claims to have killed and kidnapped

0:07:07 > 0:07:15dozens of government troops today. TRANSLATION:When the regime is not

0:07:15 > 0:07:20abiding by the UN resolution, I cannot stand still and watch and not

0:07:20 > 0:07:25defend myself and our families in Ghouta. If there's one thing all

0:07:25 > 0:07:29sides agree on is that the conflict, the agony of Syrian civilians, is

0:07:29 > 0:07:31very far from over.

0:07:31 > 0:07:33China's state news agency says the ruling Communist Party

0:07:33 > 0:07:36has proposed a change to the constitution that would allow

0:07:36 > 0:07:38the President and Vice-President to stay in power for more

0:07:38 > 0:07:39than two terms.

0:07:39 > 0:07:42The current President, Xi Jinping, is due to step down

0:07:42 > 0:07:45from his role in 2023.

0:07:45 > 0:07:50He could now stay on in the role indefinitely.

0:07:50 > 0:07:53The closing ceremony of the Winter Olympics has taken

0:07:53 > 0:07:55place in South Korea, bringing to an end to 16 days

0:07:55 > 0:08:00of sporting and political drama.

0:08:00 > 0:08:03The head of the International Olympic Committee has praised the

0:08:03 > 0:08:05bridges built between north and South Korea at the games. Laura

0:08:05 > 0:08:11Bicker is in Pyeongchang.

0:08:11 > 0:08:23This is the confident side of South Korea. Modern, dynamic. And edgy.

0:08:23 > 0:08:25Korea. Modern, dynamic. And edgy. In the stands, just one row behind the

0:08:25 > 0:08:34US President's daughter is a North Korean general, more used to seeing

0:08:34 > 0:08:38military parades. Even though he didn't talk to Ivanka Trump, it

0:08:38 > 0:08:42seems his country is ready to hold discussions with the US at some

0:08:42 > 0:08:46point, a victory for the South Korean leader. Unlike the opening

0:08:46 > 0:08:52ceremony, athletes from the two Koreas flew their own country's

0:08:52 > 0:08:56colours, highlighting division despite diplomacy. Critics fear that

0:08:56 > 0:09:02the north has been given too much of a platform at the games, but the

0:09:02 > 0:09:05minister responsible for talks between the two countries says

0:09:05 > 0:09:06Pyongyang is being pushed on nuclear weapons.

0:09:06 > 0:09:13TRANSLATION:We conveyed the message to North Korea multiple times. It is

0:09:13 > 0:09:16necessary that North Korea and the United States talk to each other to

0:09:16 > 0:09:23solve this peacefully. Before the ceremony, dozens of protesters tried

0:09:23 > 0:09:26to stop the North Korean general stopping the border to reach

0:09:26 > 0:09:30Pyeongchang. He is thought to be responsible for deadly attacks on

0:09:30 > 0:09:35South Koreans. It's a reminder that, after this Olympic revelry, there

0:09:35 > 0:09:42could be a dose of reality. This show of harmony has given South

0:09:42 > 0:09:46Korea some breathing space, but tensions still lurks in the

0:09:46 > 0:09:51background.Unfortunately it isn't going to last. North Koreans are

0:09:51 > 0:09:54entirely separating. They stated from the first meeting that the

0:09:54 > 0:09:57nuclear issue has nothing to do with the cooperation between the two

0:09:57 > 0:10:04Koreas or the Olympics.Absent again, the Russian flag, the Olympic

0:10:04 > 0:10:08committee deciding not to lift a ban imposed after years of drug

0:10:08 > 0:10:13scandals. Culturally, these games have allowed regions to see what

0:10:13 > 0:10:17happens when they're divided people come together. Politically, there

0:10:17 > 0:10:21are so many issues to overcome. -- these games have allowed Koreans.

0:10:21 > 0:10:26But this is the first progress made on this peninsula for years.

0:10:26 > 0:10:28The Indian actress Sridevi, who starred in nearly

0:10:28 > 0:10:30300 Bollywood films, has died of a heart

0:10:30 > 0:10:31attack at the age of 54.

0:10:31 > 0:10:34A former child star, her films had huge box office

0:10:34 > 0:10:35success from the 1970s to the late 1990s.

0:10:35 > 0:10:41Rajini Vaidyanathan looks back at her life.

0:10:41 > 0:10:45For decades, she was Bollywood's leading lady.

0:10:45 > 0:10:49Sridevi's combination of charisma and comic timing won her fans

0:10:49 > 0:10:52all around the world and, in a male dominated film industry,

0:10:52 > 0:10:55she was one of the first women to become a megastar

0:10:55 > 0:10:58in her own right.

0:10:58 > 0:11:02You know, the audience just want a good film,

0:11:02 > 0:11:03that's what matters.

0:11:03 > 0:11:07They are very hero oriented, or the hero oriented films,

0:11:07 > 0:11:11for them, I think it's only the subject that matters.

0:11:11 > 0:11:14Sridevi was attending a family wedding with her husband

0:11:14 > 0:11:16and daughter in Dubai when she suffered a heart attack

0:11:16 > 0:11:18late on Saturday night.

0:11:18 > 0:11:20After news of her death broke, fans gathered outside

0:11:20 > 0:11:28her house in Mumbai, as the world paid tribute.

0:11:28 > 0:11:31India is mourning the loss of one of its brightest stars.

0:11:31 > 0:11:33One film producer described the impact of Sridevi's death,

0:11:33 > 0:11:36saying that she was a pioneer who put the early cracks

0:11:36 > 0:11:39in the glass ceiling of Bollywood and paved the way for today's

0:11:39 > 0:11:42female film stars.

0:11:42 > 0:11:45Her death is a loss to our country to the film industry.

0:11:45 > 0:11:48She was such a role model to all women across the country,

0:11:48 > 0:11:51so I'm sure it's going to have an impact on all of us.

0:11:51 > 0:11:56Of course, now, you've got a lot of famous leading

0:11:56 > 0:11:58ladies in Bollywood, but think back to the '80s

0:11:58 > 0:12:01and the early '90s, there weren't too many of them

0:12:01 > 0:12:03and she was one of the first.

0:12:03 > 0:12:07Sridevi will be remembered for the way she lit up the screen.

0:12:07 > 0:12:10She left the world of Bollywood way too soon,

0:12:10 > 0:12:14but her legacy is enduring.

0:12:14 > 0:12:19Sridevi, who has died aged 54.

0:12:19 > 0:12:21More on the last day at the Winter Olympics,

0:12:21 > 0:12:22and the rest of the sport.

0:12:22 > 0:12:24Over to Karthi Gnanasegaram.

0:12:24 > 0:12:25Good evening.

0:12:25 > 0:12:28The final day of the Winter Olympics didn't end with more

0:12:28 > 0:12:29medals for Great Britain and Northern Ireland

0:12:29 > 0:12:32but they are "going in the right direction", according to the team's

0:12:32 > 0:12:34chef de mission, Mike Hay.

0:12:34 > 0:12:42Andy Swiss reports from a colourful closing ceremony in Pyeongchang.

0:12:44 > 0:12:49Britain's Olympic journey here hasn't always been the smoothest.

0:12:49 > 0:12:5317th and 18th for the much touted bobsleighers, a disappointing

0:12:53 > 0:13:00finish, but their misses have been matched by medals.

0:13:00 > 0:13:06matched by medals.She has won Bronze!A record five in total...

0:13:06 > 0:13:09Billy Morgan!After £30 million of funding, they haven't come cheap,

0:13:09 > 0:13:15but the team believe they are worth it.We are happy, a historic games,

0:13:15 > 0:13:19our best ever, three medals on Saturday, back-to-back gold medals

0:13:19 > 0:13:24with Lizzy Yarnold. The final day drama came in the men's ice hockey,

0:13:24 > 0:13:29won with a golden goal. The Olympic athletes from Russia beating

0:13:29 > 0:13:34Germany, and they certainly enjoyed it. But the greatest feat came in

0:13:34 > 0:13:37the cross-country skiing.A very special moment for all of us to

0:13:37 > 0:13:44witness.As Norway sealed their place at the top of the medals

0:13:44 > 0:13:48table, thanks to the most decorated winter Olympian of all time. Bjorgen

0:13:48 > 0:13:55winning her 15th medal, a glorious finale to a glittering career. And

0:13:55 > 0:13:59so, a spectacular end to a games which has seen some stunning global

0:13:59 > 0:14:03stories, and for the British team, with a record winter medal tally, an

0:14:03 > 0:14:04impressive success.

0:14:04 > 0:14:07Manchester United are back in second place in the Premier League

0:14:07 > 0:14:09after a 2-1 win over Chelsea.

0:14:09 > 0:14:11The United manager, Jose Mourinho, described it as an important result

0:14:11 > 0:14:17because they beat the champions, not because they beat Chelsea.

0:14:17 > 0:14:20And Tottenham hold on to a Champions League place

0:14:20 > 0:14:21after their 1-0 win over Crystal Palace today.

0:14:21 > 0:14:25Ade Adedoyin reports.

0:14:25 > 0:14:29A matchup as much about the rivalry between the teams as that between

0:14:29 > 0:14:35the two managers. A brief handshake, but Jose Mourinho and Antonio

0:14:35 > 0:14:40Conte's relationship has been a bit like the weather lately, frostily. A

0:14:40 > 0:14:43lively start, Alvaro Morata rattling the bar. Eden Hazard data combined

0:14:43 > 0:14:50with the inform Willian to put Chelsea ahead. Come take macro's

0:14:50 > 0:14:55celebrated, but he wouldn't have been happy with what happened next,

0:14:55 > 0:14:58as Romelu Lukaku scored his first goal against the toxic site to make

0:14:58 > 0:15:05it 1-1 at the break, nearly making it two with this. If you minutes

0:15:05 > 0:15:08later, Jesse Lingard with the perfect header to put United ahead,

0:15:08 > 0:15:13a fine cross and a fine finish. Mourinho's men hung on for the win,

0:15:13 > 0:15:17a day to savour the United manager, with victory against his old club

0:15:17 > 0:15:23and old adversary. In the day's early kick-off, Harry Kane scored a

0:15:23 > 0:15:26late winner against Crystal Palace, an important win in the race for the

0:15:26 > 0:15:29Champions League spots.

0:15:29 > 0:15:33There are just a few minutes remaining in the League Cup final,

0:15:33 > 0:15:37and it is Manchester City who have a 3-0 lead over Arsenal.

0:15:37 > 0:15:40David Silva with City's that goal.

0:15:40 > 0:15:43If City win, it would be their first trophy under Pep Guardiola.

0:15:43 > 0:15:45England have lost the first One Day International

0:15:45 > 0:15:47against New Zealand by three wickets in Hamilton.

0:15:47 > 0:15:49Ben Stokes returned to play in his first England match

0:15:49 > 0:15:51since September and took two wickets for 43 runs.

0:15:51 > 0:15:53But New Zealand won with four balls to spare.

0:15:53 > 0:15:57Mitchell Santner sealing the win with a six.

0:15:57 > 0:15:59All of the day's sports headlines are on the BBC website,

0:15:59 > 0:16:03including Celtic's 2-0 win over Aberdeen to take a nine-point lead
