0:00:06 > 0:00:08An end to the freezing weather is in sight -

0:00:08 > 0:00:11but thousands of homes tonight remain without power.

0:00:11 > 0:00:13The M62 in Greater Manchester did start moving again

0:00:13 > 0:00:18after being closed for more than a day.

0:00:18 > 0:00:21But the thaw has brought flood warnings

0:00:21 > 0:00:23to coastal areas of England - and many rural communities

0:00:23 > 0:00:25remain cut off.

0:00:25 > 0:00:28We're actually cut off and we have been since Thursday.

0:00:28 > 0:00:31They are working on it, but it's going to be

0:00:31 > 0:00:34a couple more days before they can get through to us.

0:00:34 > 0:00:39And the other main stories on tonight's programme.

0:00:39 > 0:00:41President Trump threatens to impose new taxes on cars imported

0:00:41 > 0:00:47into the US from the European Union

0:00:47 > 0:00:49The controversial video technology designed to help football

0:00:49 > 0:00:56referees is approved for use ahead of this year's World Cup.

0:00:56 > 0:00:58Action.

0:00:58 > 0:01:01And on the eve of the Oscars, we speak to the next

0:01:01 > 0:01:03generation of film makers about Hollywood's fightback

0:01:03 > 0:01:11against sexual harassment.

0:01:24 > 0:01:27Good evening.

0:01:27 > 0:01:29Most of northern England and Scotland remain in sub zero

0:01:29 > 0:01:31temperatures, with high winds and freezing rain leaving thousands

0:01:31 > 0:01:33of people without power.

0:01:33 > 0:01:35The bitter weather has been easing elsewhere,

0:01:35 > 0:01:39but there's been continuing disruption to road and rail travel,

0:01:39 > 0:01:41and a number of flood warnings are in place in southwest

0:01:41 > 0:01:42and northeast England.

0:01:42 > 0:01:48Here's our correspondent Dan Johnson.

0:01:48 > 0:01:52Yesterday's empty strip of tarmac across the country replaced this

0:01:52 > 0:01:59morning by trans-Pennine traffic, reconnecting Leeds and Manchester.

0:01:59 > 0:02:01The M62 reopened, but many roads across these hills are still

0:02:01 > 0:02:06blocked.

0:02:06 > 0:02:14It's been quite incredible, never seen anything like it.

0:02:14 > 0:02:16seen anything like it. We've had cars getting stuck, including police

0:02:16 > 0:02:20cars and so on.

0:02:20 > 0:02:23These are the ice roads of the North Pennines.

0:02:23 > 0:02:25This lane leading to the tiny village of

0:02:25 > 0:02:26Bewcastle has been blocked since Wednesday.

0:02:26 > 0:02:28This morning, local farmers cleared the snow.

0:02:28 > 0:02:30People here are feeling a bit forgotten.

0:02:30 > 0:02:33I rang the highways department yesterday morning asking them to

0:02:33 > 0:02:39send out some assistance as our tractor was stuck in a neighbour's.

0:02:39 > 0:02:43And they said, there's no way anybody was going to be out our way.

0:02:43 > 0:02:46I think it's absolutely disgusting.

0:02:46 > 0:02:49Right across the North, there's still plenty of snow to clear.

0:02:49 > 0:02:51We don't want any more, but, you know,

0:02:51 > 0:02:52it is what it is.

0:02:52 > 0:02:53And we can cope with it.

0:02:53 > 0:02:57When you see the amount of snow here you get an idea of what

0:02:57 > 0:03:05this community has had to endure this week.

0:03:08 > 0:03:11This is not the only village that has been cut off.

0:03:11 > 0:03:13High tides and flooding are now a risk.

0:03:13 > 0:03:15This is Dawlish on the south-west coast.

0:03:15 > 0:03:19And look what the trains have to plough through in Scotland.

0:03:19 > 0:03:21We're actually hopeful of a near normal

0:03:21 > 0:03:24service tomorrow, which will set everything up for people going back

0:03:24 > 0:03:29to work Monday morning.

0:03:29 > 0:03:30Hundreds of homes across Wales were without

0:03:30 > 0:03:31power.

0:03:31 > 0:03:36Leaking boilers have only added to the misery.

0:03:36 > 0:03:38All the bedding's all damage, the bed itself

0:03:38 > 0:03:39is all gone, it's soaking wet.

0:03:39 > 0:03:40The carpets are saturated.

0:03:40 > 0:03:42Some supermarkets are running short.

0:03:42 > 0:03:46After the beast from the east, the hysteria from Siberia.

0:03:46 > 0:03:48Back in Bewcastle there are signs of warmer

0:03:48 > 0:03:52climes.

0:03:52 > 0:03:54The long, slow thaw may have started.

0:03:54 > 0:03:56That doesn't mean the problems are over.

0:03:56 > 0:04:02Dan Johnson, BBC News, Cumbria.

0:04:02 > 0:04:05North Devon has seen particularly heavy snow

0:04:05 > 0:04:09and there too some remote villages have been cut off - for days.

0:04:09 > 0:04:11Jon Kay has sent this report.

0:04:11 > 0:04:19This is the A39, now being cleared, one scoop at a time.

0:04:21 > 0:04:25Miles of snow have to go to free this part of Devon.

0:04:25 > 0:04:28We need to dig through to get the roads open again.

0:04:28 > 0:04:30Volunteers are helping council and highway staff on Exmoor

0:04:30 > 0:04:38so supplies can come in and villagers can get out.

0:04:38 > 0:04:40What's happened here is that the high winds have brought

0:04:40 > 0:04:43all this snow in off the Moors and it's basically become trapped

0:04:43 > 0:04:45on the road by the high trees and the bushes,

0:04:45 > 0:04:51and it can't go anywhere, it can't get away.

0:04:51 > 0:04:55Compare it, look, with the hills at the side, there the snow has

0:04:55 > 0:04:58pretty much melted now, but on the road itself -

0:04:58 > 0:04:59completely blocked.

0:04:59 > 0:05:02People are running low on supplies and I think that worries people

0:05:02 > 0:05:04in this day and age, when we are not used to those

0:05:04 > 0:05:11sort of circumstances.

0:05:11 > 0:05:19There is so much to do, the nearest town, Lynton,

0:05:20 > 0:05:22is another four miles on from here.

0:05:22 > 0:05:25Today, some of its 1,100 trapped residents sent us videos showing

0:05:25 > 0:05:26what they're having to cope with.

0:05:26 > 0:05:27It's not easy.

0:05:27 > 0:05:28We've run out of milk.

0:05:28 > 0:05:30We're running out of nappies.

0:05:30 > 0:05:31I've got three grandchildren that are in nappies,

0:05:31 > 0:05:33and my daughter's struggling.

0:05:33 > 0:05:37Across Exmoor, in extreme conditions, communities have told us

0:05:37 > 0:05:40how they're helping one another.

0:05:40 > 0:05:43A school giving all its food to a care home.

0:05:43 > 0:05:47We've all been talking to each other and working together as a team.

0:05:47 > 0:05:50In Paracombe, Linda is clearing neighbours drives, resilience

0:05:50 > 0:05:53in remote communities.

0:05:53 > 0:05:56What you do is put an appeal on the village Facebook site

0:05:56 > 0:05:59and somebody will come up to the door and help you out,

0:05:59 > 0:06:00if you're really stuck.

0:06:00 > 0:06:01So what have you had?

0:06:01 > 0:06:04Well, it's always nice getting some potatoes when you're short

0:06:04 > 0:06:07of potatoes, isn't it?

0:06:07 > 0:06:09At the Fox and Goose they're running low.

0:06:09 > 0:06:12We're holding together, but it's not easy and we need stuff

0:06:12 > 0:06:20to start moving now, so that we can carry on and trade.

0:06:21 > 0:06:23Tonight some progress, an emergency route has been cleared

0:06:23 > 0:06:27through the fields so Royal Marines can get medicine to a sick patient.

0:06:27 > 0:06:30Now we can hopefully walk forward and give these

0:06:30 > 0:06:32supplies to the woman, who's been waiting all day

0:06:32 > 0:06:33for her medical supplies.

0:06:33 > 0:06:34You're busy?

0:06:34 > 0:06:35We are.

0:06:35 > 0:06:36Yeah, very busy.

0:06:36 > 0:06:38Across the south-west of England they push on.

0:06:38 > 0:06:46Jon Kay, BBC News, Exmoor.

0:06:47 > 0:06:49Donald Trump has threatened to apply new taxes on cars imported

0:06:49 > 0:06:51into the United States, from the European Union.

0:06:51 > 0:06:54It's the latest salvo in a war of words over trade tariffs.

0:06:54 > 0:06:56Let's speak to our correspondent Chris Buckler who's

0:06:56 > 0:06:57in Washington for us now.

0:06:57 > 0:07:03Remind us of the background to this.

0:07:03 > 0:07:07Yes, the threat of new tariffs has fuelled fears of a trade war. You

0:07:07 > 0:07:12are right in saying the war of words is well underway. Countries had

0:07:12 > 0:07:15already threatened retaliatory action as a result of President

0:07:15 > 0:07:19Trump's announcement he was planning to put 25% tariffs on steel and 10%

0:07:19 > 0:07:25on aluminium imported into America. Probably one of the most memorable

0:07:25 > 0:07:28warnings came from the European Commission President Jean-Claude

0:07:28 > 0:07:32Juncker who said they would tax the most American of products, including

0:07:32 > 0:07:36bourbon and blue jeans. It's clear President Trump was listening and

0:07:36 > 0:07:40today he bit back. It probably won't come as a surprise to anybody he

0:07:40 > 0:07:45responded on Twitter, saying he was prepared to tax cars coming into the

0:07:45 > 0:07:50US from Europe, and that will cause concern across the Atlantic. Because

0:07:50 > 0:07:56the European car manufacturer's biggest export market is the US.

0:07:56 > 0:08:00Many inside the White House urge caution because they believe no one

0:08:00 > 0:08:04really benefits from this kind of tit-for-tat trade war.Chris, many

0:08:04 > 0:08:07thanks.

0:08:07 > 0:08:09Three men have been charged with manslaughter and arson over

0:08:09 > 0:08:11an explosion in Leicester, which left five people dead.

0:08:11 > 0:08:13Several people were also injured in the blast,

0:08:13 > 0:08:16in the Hinkley Road area of the city last Sunday.

0:08:16 > 0:08:18Three members of the same family died when the shop

0:08:18 > 0:08:20and flat were destroyed.

0:08:20 > 0:08:26Reports from Syria suggest government forces have gained more

0:08:26 > 0:08:28ground in the assault on the rebel-held area of eastern

0:08:28 > 0:08:30Ghouta, near the capital Damascus.

0:08:30 > 0:08:32Once again, no aid was delivered during the daily

0:08:32 > 0:08:33five-hour humanitarian ceasefire there - and no

0:08:33 > 0:08:36civilians made it out.

0:08:36 > 0:08:38President Assad's ally Russia says rebels have prevented

0:08:38 > 0:08:39civilians from leaving.

0:08:39 > 0:08:43The rebels deny this.

0:08:43 > 0:08:46Now with more on that news that video technology is set to be

0:08:46 > 0:08:50used at the football World Cup, and with the rest

0:08:50 > 0:08:51sport, here's Lizzie

0:08:51 > 0:08:52Greenwood-Hughes at the BBC Sport Centre.

0:08:52 > 0:08:53Thanks very much.

0:08:53 > 0:08:58Good evening.

0:08:58 > 0:09:01Video assistant referees are set to be used at the World Cup in Russia

0:09:01 > 0:09:04after football lawmakers voted unanimously to approve the

0:09:04 > 0:09:07technology. Our correspondence Richard Conway reports.

0:09:07 > 0:09:08Our correspondence Richard Conway reports.

0:09:08 > 0:09:11From Diego Maradona's hand of God to injustice in the biggest games.

0:09:11 > 0:09:13Football has long opposed technology to help officials make the important

0:09:13 > 0:09:14decisions.

0:09:14 > 0:09:17But after an historic vote all that has changed.

0:09:17 > 0:09:18Video assisted referees or VAR as it's

0:09:18 > 0:09:24known, finally given the go-ahead.

0:09:24 > 0:09:25VAR is good for football.

0:09:25 > 0:09:26It's good for refereeing.

0:09:26 > 0:09:28It brings more fairness in the game.

0:09:28 > 0:09:36And, for these reasons, we have decided to approve.

0:09:41 > 0:09:44VAR will be used to correct errors relating to goals, penalties,

0:09:44 > 0:09:45straight red cards and mistaken identity.

0:09:45 > 0:09:48Nearly 1000 games have formed part of the two year VAR

0:09:48 > 0:09:53experiment.

0:09:53 > 0:09:55Tottenham's match against Rochdale last week was

0:09:55 > 0:09:57included in the trial but was criticised given lengthy delays

0:09:57 > 0:09:58while the referee reviewed incidents.

0:09:58 > 0:10:00Leading to claims technology is killing the atmosphere

0:10:00 > 0:10:05and pace of the match.

0:10:05 > 0:10:07Some now question whether VAR should be used

0:10:07 > 0:10:12at all, including at this summer's World Cup in Russia.

0:10:12 > 0:10:20The holy grail of football is the World Cup, surely

0:10:24 > 0:10:26if it's not good enough for the FA Cup

0:10:26 > 0:10:27we can't wheel it out into the

0:10:27 > 0:10:30most prestigious tournament we have every four years.

0:10:36 > 0:10:38On sort of clear error situations, clear situations, the accuracy of

0:10:38 > 0:10:41the referee's decisions went from initially 93% up to around 99%.

0:10:41 > 0:10:43Of course there are grey areas where an

0:10:43 > 0:10:45incident could be a penalty, could not

0:10:45 > 0:10:46be a penalty, and they were

0:10:46 > 0:10:48always remain grey areas.

0:10:48 > 0:10:53Football's leaders want to eliminate game

0:10:53 > 0:10:55changing mistakes, but as the experiments have

0:10:55 > 0:10:56shown, anyone who thinks

0:10:56 > 0:10:58technology will stop controversy may want to think again.

0:10:58 > 0:10:59Richard Conway, BBC News.

0:10:59 > 0:11:01Despite the poor weather, the day's Premier League

0:11:01 > 0:11:04and Scottish Cup fixtures went ahead as planned - Match of the Day

0:11:04 > 0:11:07and Sportscene follow the news so if you don't want to know

0:11:07 > 0:11:09the results, you need to avert your attention now.

0:11:09 > 0:11:11Liverpool are up to second place in the table,

0:11:11 > 0:11:13beating Newcastle and former manager Rafael Benitez 2-0

0:11:13 > 0:11:16in the late kick-off.

0:11:16 > 0:11:22Mo Salah and Sadio Mane the scorers at Anfield.

0:11:22 > 0:11:24Elsewhere there were wins for Burnley, Swansea -

0:11:24 > 0:11:26who jumped out of the relegation zone to 13th -

0:11:26 > 0:11:28Tottenham and Watford.

0:11:28 > 0:11:31Celtic are still on for the domestic treble -

0:11:31 > 0:11:33through to the semi-finals of the Scottish Cup

0:11:33 > 0:11:35with victory over Championship side Greenock Morton.

0:11:35 > 0:11:39Aberdeen and Kilmarnock will replay after they drew.

0:11:39 > 0:11:42Great Britain's Laura Muir has won her second medal of the World

0:11:42 > 0:11:44Indoor Athletics Championships, claiming silver in the

0:11:44 > 0:11:451500m in Birmingham.

0:11:45 > 0:11:48The Scottish veterinary student gave her all to improve on her bronze

0:11:48 > 0:11:56medal in the 3000 metres.

0:11:57 > 0:12:00Ethiopia's Genzebe Dibaba won gold for a middle distance double.

0:12:00 > 0:12:03And the man being dubbed 'the next Usain Bolt' set a championship

0:12:03 > 0:12:05record on his way to winning the 60 metres.

0:12:05 > 0:12:06America's Christian Coleman clocked 6.37 seconds.

0:12:06 > 0:12:14Britain's CJ Ujah was disqualified in the semi-finals.

0:12:17 > 0:12:20England's cricketers are now 2-1 up in their One Day series

0:12:20 > 0:12:21against New Zealand.

0:12:21 > 0:12:24After a nail-biting victory in the third match in Wellington.

0:12:24 > 0:12:26New Zealand finished four runs short of their 234 target.

0:12:26 > 0:12:32England can seal the series with a win in Dunedin on Wednesday.

0:12:32 > 0:12:35Katie Archibald and Emily Nelson have won Great Britain's second gold

0:12:35 > 0:12:39at the Track Cycling World Championships in the Netherlands.

0:12:39 > 0:12:41Dominating the women's Madison, despite a late change of team,

0:12:41 > 0:12:43as Nelson replaced Elinor Barker, who crashed-out yesterday.

0:12:43 > 0:12:50It takes Britain's medal tally to six.

0:12:50 > 0:12:51That's it.

0:12:51 > 0:12:53But as always, there's plenty more on the BBC

0:12:53 > 0:12:56Sport website, including the latest from the Welsh Open snooker.

0:12:56 > 0:12:57But from me, for now, goodnight.

0:12:57 > 0:12:59After one of Hollywood's most tumultuous years,

0:12:59 > 0:13:05with revelations of sexual harassment and gender inequality,

0:13:05 > 0:13:07movements such as #MeToo and Time's Up have been pushing

0:13:07 > 0:13:09for fundamental changes in the entertainment industry.

0:13:09 > 0:13:11Our arts editor, Will Gompertz, has been talking to the next

0:13:11 > 0:13:17generation of film makers in Los Angeles to get their take

0:13:17 > 0:13:19on an industry in flux.

0:13:19 > 0:13:22I just have to figure out, how do I see this in your...

0:13:22 > 0:13:27We're on set with a group of postgraduate

0:13:27 > 0:13:30students from the highly respected USC School of cinematic arts in Los

0:13:30 > 0:13:32Angeles.

0:13:32 > 0:13:35They are making a film for this post Weinstein era that

0:13:35 > 0:13:37explores how an encounter between a young aspiring actress

0:13:37 > 0:13:39and powerful male producer can quickly result in

0:13:39 > 0:13:41blurred lines being crossed.

0:13:41 > 0:13:45Can I have somebody sit in?

0:13:45 > 0:13:48I have plenty of stories of my own work in

0:13:48 > 0:13:54Hollywood that are in line with #MeToo movement.

0:13:54 > 0:13:55And I wanted to...

0:13:55 > 0:13:57That's the area I know the most about,

0:13:57 > 0:13:58so I wanted to focus on the

0:13:58 > 0:14:06story and the business that I know most about.

0:14:11 > 0:14:14What do I have to do to get what I want?

0:14:14 > 0:14:15Do you think things are changing?

0:14:15 > 0:14:16I'm remaining cautiously optimistic.

0:14:16 > 0:14:19I do think that the pendulum has swung in the

0:14:19 > 0:14:22other direction and I think it needs to find its way in the middle where

0:14:22 > 0:14:26we can make some significant change, because right now it's sort of, you

0:14:26 > 0:14:28know, it's a bit of a panic situation.

0:14:28 > 0:14:30At this point what worries me is still people being

0:14:30 > 0:14:31judged for speaking up.

0:14:31 > 0:14:32Because it's such a grey area.

0:14:32 > 0:14:35And because you don't want to build a bad reputation

0:14:35 > 0:14:40for yourself when you're starting your especially

0:14:40 > 0:14:42for yourself when you're starting your career

0:14:42 > 0:14:43especially because it's such a
