0:00:07 > 0:00:11This is Beyond 100 Days, with me Katty Kay in Washington

0:00:11 > 0:00:14and Christian Fraser's in London.

0:00:14 > 0:00:17North Korea offers to send a high-level delegation

0:00:17 > 0:00:20to next month's Winter Olympics,

0:00:20 > 0:00:30after the first talks with the South in more than two years.

0:00:35 > 0:00:37Donald Trump hosts a roundtable meeting between Republicans

0:00:37 > 0:00:40and Democrats about security and immigration in a rare

0:00:40 > 0:00:42show of bipartisanship.

0:00:51 > 0:00:55As fans call for Oprah Winfrey to run for president, Donald Trump is

0:00:55 > 0:01:00also full of praise but says he would beat her at the polls. And the

0:01:00 > 0:01:03self propelling suitcase that follows its owner. Just one of the

0:01:03 > 0:01:09marvels at this year's major tech show in Las Vegas. Get in touch on

0:01:09 > 0:01:11#Beyond100Days.

0:01:24 > 0:01:28Figure skaters, cheerleaders and artists are the subject of talks

0:01:28 > 0:01:32between North and South Korea but nuclear weapons are off the table as

0:01:32 > 0:01:37the two countries celebrate Pyongyang's decision to compete in

0:01:37 > 0:01:40the Winter Olympics but there are questions about where this will lead

0:01:40 > 0:01:45when military talks will not even include nukes. But it is a step

0:01:45 > 0:01:50towards easing tensions. It is the first time with the North has

0:01:50 > 0:01:54participated in any Olympics since 2010 and now there of a scramble to

0:01:54 > 0:01:57work out how to get the athletes are there and how to make sure they

0:01:57 > 0:02:06return home again afterwards. The skiers on the slopes today were

0:02:06 > 0:02:10moving a little slower than they will be in a month's time. Then, the

0:02:10 > 0:02:17world's best will be flying down these slopes. And now we know that

0:02:17 > 0:02:23when the Olympic Games open here on February the 7th, there will be a

0:02:23 > 0:02:28full North Korean team competing. They will march in side by side with

0:02:28 > 0:02:35their South Korean company dreads. TRANSLATION: I think we can put

0:02:35 > 0:02:38everything else aside and everyone should do their best to achieve

0:02:38 > 0:02:43their goals in the competition. North Korea is just 50 miles away in

0:02:43 > 0:02:49that direction and the North has completely overshadowed preparations

0:02:49 > 0:02:53for the Olympics here. Some teams have threatened to pull out, ticket

0:02:53 > 0:02:57sales have been slow. You can see this place is not exactly humming

0:02:57 > 0:03:01with skiers. So there is immense relief that the Northampton South

0:03:01 > 0:03:06are at least talking. This morning, North Korea's chief delegate strode

0:03:06 > 0:03:11along the demarcation line that divides the two countries. He warmly

0:03:11 > 0:03:18shook the hand of his South Korean counterpart. The weather is cold, he

0:03:18 > 0:03:21said, but despite the cold the people's desire for improving

0:03:21 > 0:03:26relations is unfrozen. It is hard to overstate how dramatic and rapid

0:03:26 > 0:03:33this shift has been. It is only a month since North Korea test fired

0:03:33 > 0:03:38this huge new missile, posting it could hit any city in the United

0:03:38 > 0:03:45States. Off the coast of Korea, US aircraft carriers and must, their

0:03:45 > 0:03:48decks swarming with supersonic strike aircraft. It felt like this

0:03:48 > 0:03:54region was teetering on the brink of war. So is Pyongyang's sudden change

0:03:54 > 0:04:02of heart real or just a tactic to avoid war with America?North Korea

0:04:02 > 0:04:08would like to gain time in order to avoid a potential immediate

0:04:08 > 0:04:15retaliation by the United States and eventually re-engage with the

0:04:15 > 0:04:19provocation cycle so they can threaten the United States. The

0:04:19 > 0:04:25Winter Olympics may be a cover for Kim Jong-un, a convenient excuse for

0:04:25 > 0:04:29him to step back from the brink, but in the south, any chance to talk is

0:04:29 > 0:04:37better than the terrifying alternative.

0:04:37 > 0:04:41Few could disagree with that thought. Earlier we were joined by

0:04:41 > 0:04:46South Korea's ambassador to the UK and started off by asking him what

0:04:46 > 0:04:54is the long-term goal of what has just begun. The US and Korea have

0:04:54 > 0:05:03the same view that we can not accept a nuclear armed state. And also we

0:05:03 > 0:05:12want to preserve the verifiable... But they give nothing in order to

0:05:12 > 0:05:16come to the table and the fear is Pyongyang is trying to drive a wedge

0:05:16 > 0:05:21between Seoul and Washington. If they try to drive a wedge between

0:05:21 > 0:05:26the US and Korea, they will fail because we maintain very close

0:05:26 > 0:05:30collaboration and coordination on a daily basis at every level. As I

0:05:30 > 0:05:35said, we have the same goal and the same approach. So the driving wedge

0:05:35 > 0:05:42is not a concern for us.In order to bring North Korea to the games, what

0:05:42 > 0:05:45is your government have to do in terms of easing sanctions so that

0:05:45 > 0:05:52the team can actually travelled to soul?Actually, I understand we need

0:05:52 > 0:05:57to not get into any details about dropping sanctions. What we are

0:05:57 > 0:06:06talking about now is that we invite North Korea and they decided to send

0:06:06 > 0:06:09a large sized delegation. We wholeheartedly welcome it and we

0:06:09 > 0:06:15sincerely hope this is a good starting point to ease tension on

0:06:15 > 0:06:19the Korean peninsula and also engage in direct dialogue with the North

0:06:19 > 0:06:24and also further create an environment conducive to more

0:06:24 > 0:06:31serious negotiations on nuclear and ballistic missile issues.

0:06:31 > 0:06:36Ambassador, you describe it as a good starting point. Of course,

0:06:36 > 0:06:39there must be concerned that North Korea does not follow through, that

0:06:39 > 0:06:44you have a peaceful Olympic Games, but after that they go back to their

0:06:44 > 0:06:51bad behaviour. You must have some concerns about that, don't you?We

0:06:51 > 0:06:55hope, we sincerely hope that this Olympic Games and also this

0:06:55 > 0:07:01high-level talks will pave the way for a relaxation of tension and more

0:07:01 > 0:07:09serious dialogue between the two careers, and also leading to the

0:07:09 > 0:07:13more serious dialogue and negotiation on nuclear issues. But

0:07:13 > 0:07:17all of the evidence in history is that they don't follow through

0:07:17 > 0:07:20long-term on these breakthroughs, these moment of rapprochement, they

0:07:20 > 0:07:26just go back to their bad nuclear behaviour. But these situations have

0:07:26 > 0:07:31been changing now and the international community,

0:07:31 > 0:07:36particularly the Security Council, instigated very strong sanctions and

0:07:36 > 0:07:44resolutions in recent years. We increase the pressure on the North

0:07:44 > 0:07:52Korean government to change their strategy and this time, on the

0:07:52 > 0:07:58occasion of the Olympic Games, they have decided to send a large sized

0:07:58 > 0:08:03team, and they are engaged in direct talks in a serious manner so we

0:08:03 > 0:08:08believe and we hope that this is a good starting point.Just one last

0:08:08 > 0:08:11question, the Wall Street Journal today says the Americans are talking

0:08:11 > 0:08:18about a tactical strike may be, the next time they launch a missile, a

0:08:18 > 0:08:22bloody nose, but not full-scale war. Those that worry your country that

0:08:22 > 0:08:29the Americans are even considering that?My government and also all

0:08:29 > 0:08:33relevant governments, relevant countries, they pursue diplomatic

0:08:33 > 0:08:37solution to this problem. Nobody wants full-scale war, nobody wants

0:08:37 > 0:08:45even limited war.You can't stop it becoming a walk with a limited

0:08:45 > 0:08:57strike, can you?It may be difficult to control everything but

0:08:57 > 0:09:00undoubtedly, the Korean government and the US government and other

0:09:00 > 0:09:05related countries all pursue a dramatic solution to this problem.

0:09:05 > 0:09:13Good to have you with us. Thank you. It may be difficult to control

0:09:13 > 0:09:17everything. A short while ago I spoke to the former US ambassador to

0:09:17 > 0:09:21South Korea. How significant is this breakthrough

0:09:21 > 0:09:24around the Olympics in terms of the broader relationship between the

0:09:24 > 0:09:29North and South?First of all, it is busy very significant for the

0:09:29 > 0:09:34Olympics. South Korea has invested ten years and lots of money in

0:09:34 > 0:09:37preparing for these Olympics. Frankly, the only thing that could

0:09:37 > 0:09:41have gone wrong would have been a North Korean provocation. The fact

0:09:41 > 0:09:46that Kim Jong-un issued that new Year 's address and then followed up

0:09:46 > 0:09:51by sending a team down is a good sign. The question is, can this

0:09:51 > 0:09:56really go much further than the Olympics? There, time will tell. We

0:09:56 > 0:10:01have seen a pattern over decades of North Korea making advances,

0:10:01 > 0:10:05engaging with the international community, only for them to retreat

0:10:05 > 0:10:09and start misbehaving again. Do you have any optimism that it can be

0:10:09 > 0:10:15different this time around?Based on past experience, I don't think it is

0:10:15 > 0:10:20going to go much further. I do feel the North Korea are motivated by a

0:10:20 > 0:10:24essentially three different ideas. One, that they can be a good,

0:10:24 > 0:10:28friendly neighbour, even with nuclear weapons, and that they can

0:10:28 > 0:10:33start the process, which I think is a long-term effort to drive wedges

0:10:33 > 0:10:39between the US and South Korea, ultimately decoupling the US from

0:10:39 > 0:10:43South Korea's security, and I would not be surprised if they are feeling

0:10:43 > 0:10:46the pinch of some of these sanctions, although I don't want to

0:10:46 > 0:10:50go too far with that. I know President Trump is taking credit for

0:10:50 > 0:10:53these meetings based on the sanctions, but I think it is far

0:10:53 > 0:10:57more complex than that. The reporting is that it will be the

0:10:57 > 0:11:00South Koreans to pay for the North Korean athletes and delegates to

0:11:00 > 0:11:06come to the Olympics. You have been had so many negotiations yourself,

0:11:06 > 0:11:13there is give and take, what has North Korea given in this instance?

0:11:13 > 0:11:16They have certainly made sure that nothing will go wrong with the

0:11:16 > 0:11:22Olympics so, in that sense, they have given something. It sounds a

0:11:22 > 0:11:25little like organised crime but that is essentially what they have given.

0:11:25 > 0:11:30I think they are trying to show that they can be this good neighbour, and

0:11:30 > 0:11:39that is something that certainly the president wanted to see because he

0:11:39 > 0:11:44has a lot of people in his party who believe they should be an engagement

0:11:44 > 0:11:49policy with regard to North Korea. So he has got something on that

0:11:49 > 0:11:53score and can placate a lot of people within his party. But it's

0:11:53 > 0:11:58important to understand that the peninsula talks ten to deal with

0:11:58 > 0:12:00humanitarian issues, family reunification, which is the next

0:12:00 > 0:12:05topic they would like to address. It is not about nuclear weapons or

0:12:05 > 0:12:09security. It is more about the atmosphere and the bilateral

0:12:09 > 0:12:12relationship that the North and South have clearly not had much of

0:12:12 > 0:12:18in recent years.I was interested to see that when it comes to military

0:12:18 > 0:12:22talks, which they will now hold as well, the discussion of nuclear

0:12:22 > 0:12:27discussions have been taken off the table. How realistic can military

0:12:27 > 0:12:31talks with North Korea be if they are not going to discuss the

0:12:31 > 0:12:38problem?Historically, they have not been very significant. Obviously,

0:12:38 > 0:12:41you would look for some kind of confidence building measures, may be

0:12:41 > 0:12:47pull-back of forces, this type of thing, but what the North Koreans

0:12:47 > 0:12:51will be looking for is further to their policy of trying to decouple

0:12:51 > 0:12:55the US from South Korea, they will be looking for further postponement

0:12:55 > 0:13:01and even cancellation of US, Republic of Korea military

0:13:01 > 0:13:05exercises. So they will be absolutely focused on that. They see

0:13:05 > 0:13:08that as part and parcel of the effort to weaken the Alliance.Thank

0:13:08 > 0:13:16you very much. Both sides today saying there is no

0:13:16 > 0:13:19increased daylight between them. That they share opinions on what

0:13:19 > 0:13:24needs to happen in North Korea. But look, anything is better than where

0:13:24 > 0:13:28we were two months ago. Any talks. And if they can become a catalyst

0:13:28 > 0:13:34for change, all the better. It is weird. We are in this day will track

0:13:34 > 0:13:38process at the moment where we have these talks going on. The State

0:13:38 > 0:13:42Department saying they welcome those talks going on and yet there is

0:13:42 > 0:13:47still talked in Washington about what you asked the ambassador about

0:13:47 > 0:13:54and that is some idea of a precision strike. There is a piece in Foreign

0:13:54 > 0:13:59Policy magazine and a title is, it's time to bomb North Korea. So there

0:13:59 > 0:14:02is certainly a discussion on military action against North Korea

0:14:02 > 0:14:05but we just can't say where we are going to be in two months' time on

0:14:05 > 0:14:11this. Will we be in a position where those talks will make a breakthrough

0:14:11 > 0:14:16or could there be the prospect of some kind of military action? It

0:14:16 > 0:14:20will be interesting to know just how involved the Americans have been in

0:14:20 > 0:14:26these discussions. I can't imagine a scenario where North Korea, where

0:14:26 > 0:14:32South Korea say we will talk to them and then pick up the phone. The

0:14:32 > 0:14:44ambassador was very keen to say there was close collaboration.

0:14:56 > 0:14:59Given how rarely President Trump chooses to do politics, the tone of

0:14:59 > 0:15:04today's meeting was writing, but whether the two sides can actually

0:15:04 > 0:15:07agree on the wall or protecting young immigrants is less clear. Here

0:15:07 > 0:15:13is Mr Trump a few minutes ago. I feel having the Democrats in with us

0:15:13 > 0:15:15is absolutely vital because it should be a bipartisan bill. It

0:15:15 > 0:15:22should be a bill of love, truly, and we can do that. But it also has to

0:15:22 > 0:15:27be a Bill where we are able to secure our border. Drugs are pouring

0:15:27 > 0:15:31into our country at a record pace. A lot of people coming in that we

0:15:31 > 0:15:36can't have. We have greatly stiffened and fewer people are

0:15:36 > 0:15:39trying to come in but we have tremendous numbers of people and

0:15:39 > 0:15:43drugs pouring into our country. So in order to secure it, we need a

0:15:43 > 0:15:48wall. Republican strategists and former

0:15:48 > 0:15:51aide for the Bush White House Ron Christie joins us from San

0:15:51 > 0:15:56Francisco. I was thinking, my goodness, that is the kind of

0:15:56 > 0:15:59meeting we might have seen your former employer, President Bush,

0:15:59 > 0:16:04hold in the White House.I thought that was a fascinating bit of

0:16:04 > 0:16:08television that we saw within the last hour. President Trump had 25

0:16:08 > 0:16:12members of Congress join him, 16 Senators and a handful of members

0:16:12 > 0:16:16from the house of representatives, and we saw something that we don't

0:16:16 > 0:16:20see in American politics often. He let the camera crew in and let them

0:16:20 > 0:16:24observe what was going on. I can't tell you how many meetings I was in

0:16:24 > 0:16:28with a bring the press in, they are there for 30 seconds, and then they

0:16:28 > 0:16:32get pushed out. We got to see Republicans and Democrats negotiated

0:16:32 > 0:16:36in front of the American people. It was a great bit of television

0:16:36 > 0:16:45Theatre.Beyond the bit of television Theatre, what happens on

0:16:45 > 0:16:49the substance of this? Do you think it makes it easier for them to come

0:16:49 > 0:16:52to some kind of agreement on tricky issues like the wall and protecting

0:16:52 > 0:17:00young immigrants?I do. I believe there is bipartisan consensus. They

0:17:00 > 0:17:04want to find a way to protect these 800,000 young people from being

0:17:04 > 0:17:09deported. One of the mechanisms that we might able to be able to do this

0:17:09 > 0:17:14is that government funding is going to stop on January 19 next week. If

0:17:14 > 0:17:17the president can find a legislative stopgap that will keep the

0:17:17 > 0:17:20government open as well as addressing these issues, I think

0:17:20 > 0:17:25there is a pathway that all sides can say they got a little something.

0:17:25 > 0:17:30Most importantly, these young people are allowed to remain.I agree, it

0:17:30 > 0:17:33was a fascinating three quarters of an hour when they went around the

0:17:33 > 0:17:37table. A real shot in the arm for bipartisanship. We certainly needed

0:17:37 > 0:17:42that after the last few months. But he went on to say that Republicans

0:17:42 > 0:17:45and Democrats need to go out for dinner more, they need to talk more.

0:17:45 > 0:17:53He said everybody hates each other. But this is the Tweed he sent out on

0:17:53 > 0:17:58the 2nd of January. Democrats are doing nothing, just interested in

0:17:58 > 0:18:06politics. This is the sort of sentiment he has been sewing on

0:18:06 > 0:18:15Twitter. He has been the division. Good to see you, Christian, as well.

0:18:15 > 0:18:19Yes, he has been. We have long talked about the president and his

0:18:19 > 0:18:22tweets and it seems to take people apart as opposed to bring people

0:18:22 > 0:18:27together. But one of the things I heard today that I thought was very

0:18:27 > 0:18:31important is that it is really hard to disagree with somebody who you

0:18:31 > 0:18:36like. It is hard not to work with someone you know and respect. And

0:18:36 > 0:18:41members of Congress, certainly the last ten or 15 years, have taken to

0:18:41 > 0:18:44running against Washington, trying to demonise not only the opposition

0:18:44 > 0:18:50party but the city itself. If we can find a way to get little bit more

0:18:50 > 0:18:52civility, perhaps the president can put down Twitter every now and again

0:18:52 > 0:18:57and bring people over. President Bush brought people over every

0:18:57 > 0:19:02Thursday and had drinks. Let's get to know each other, talk to each

0:19:02 > 0:19:06other, and talk about these issues rather than demonise each other.

0:19:06 > 0:19:09Picking up that sentiment that it is difficult to disagree with someone

0:19:09 > 0:19:17you like. Here is a message from Ron Christie, who has fallen in love

0:19:17 > 0:19:20with Oprah Winfrey. Here it is.

0:19:30 > 0:19:34Is she the 46th president, Ron Christie? No, and don't worry, I

0:19:34 > 0:19:40will be back in Washington next week. I think she was

0:19:40 > 0:19:44extraordinarily eloquent. I stand by the sentiments expressed in my

0:19:44 > 0:19:49tweet. With so much rancour and division in Hollywood, with Harvey

0:19:49 > 0:19:53Weinstein and the six scandals, it is nice to see a strong woman of

0:19:53 > 0:19:59collective eloquent remarks and take head-on an issue that has ripped

0:19:59 > 0:20:03apart the fabric of our society today. Yes, I am still coming back

0:20:03 > 0:20:10to Washington, don't worry.Good man. Great to see you.

0:20:10 > 0:20:14So what do you make of it, the round the table?I thought it was

0:20:14 > 0:20:20fascinating. It is fascinating partly because we haven't seen the

0:20:20 > 0:20:23president do this. This is what presidents in the past have done,

0:20:23 > 0:20:26got everyone together. We have talked a lot about division in

0:20:26 > 0:20:29Washington and kudos to the president for managing to get

0:20:29 > 0:20:33Democrats there to listen to them as they made their policy statements.

0:20:33 > 0:20:37Getting people together does mean you can do some talking. And he is

0:20:37 > 0:20:43going to Davos. I didn't realise that President Obama and President

0:20:43 > 0:20:48Bush did not go to Davos, so this is a first.I was fascinated when this

0:20:48 > 0:20:53news broke. It came out from the White House that he has decided to

0:20:53 > 0:20:59go to advance the America first agenda. Davos, previous presidents

0:20:59 > 0:21:05have felt is this gathering of this local glitterati, and they didn't

0:21:05 > 0:21:08want to be seen in that circumstance. President Obama would

0:21:08 > 0:21:12not have dreamt of going to Davos because he would have been chastised

0:21:12 > 0:21:16by Republicans throughout the country for those food grass

0:21:16 > 0:21:18afterwards. President Bush felt exactly the same thing. President

0:21:18 > 0:21:25Clinton did go right at the end of his time in office in 2000. So it is

0:21:25 > 0:21:28rare for American presidents to go and it is fascinating that this

0:21:28 > 0:21:33president, who has railed against globalisation, styled himself as a

0:21:33 > 0:21:35populist, is the one that breaks the mould and actually goes to

0:21:35 > 0:21:40Switzerland for the gathering. Interesting to watch.

0:21:40 > 0:21:44French authorities are investigating a suspected arson attack on a kosher

0:21:44 > 0:21:47grocery store in Paris. It was recently did face with Nazi

0:21:47 > 0:21:54swastikas. It comes amid fears of France's Jewish community about

0:21:54 > 0:22:01rising anti-Semitism. A cargo is still leaking oil into

0:22:01 > 0:22:08the East China Sea following a fire. One person has been confirmed dead.

0:22:14 > 0:22:17Now, if you want a glimpse of the future, there is no better place you

0:22:17 > 0:22:21can be right now than Las Vegas. It is the width of a massive consumer

0:22:21 > 0:22:25electronic show and on display the technology that will revolutionise

0:22:25 > 0:22:31the way we live.170,000 people are expected to visit those exhibitions.

0:22:31 > 0:22:34They are going to see the tech companies latest developments

0:22:34 > 0:22:38including driverless cars and advances in artificial intelligence.

0:22:42 > 0:22:47A powerful and largely invisible technology is on the march. It is

0:22:47 > 0:22:51learning how to drive. It can recognise individual faces and it

0:22:51 > 0:22:56knows an awful lot about our personal preferences. That

0:22:56 > 0:22:59technology is artificial intelligence and, in Las Vegas this

0:22:59 > 0:23:05week, tech firms are showing off how far it has come. Can we shake hands?

0:23:05 > 0:23:11In a Las Vegas University lab, I am eating Sophia, a humanoid robot. How

0:23:11 > 0:23:17sophisticated do you think you are as a robot?A lot of people perceive

0:23:17 > 0:23:22me as a robot but I would not people what then I am a human. I just want

0:23:22 > 0:23:25to communicate with humans in the best possible ways, which include

0:23:25 > 0:23:32looking like one.Severe has few practical uses right now but her

0:23:32 > 0:23:34creators believe she represents a big step on the road to artificial

0:23:34 > 0:23:42intelligence.Our aspiration is to bring the machines to life, to

0:23:42 > 0:23:44create living, intelligent systems, and there you will see the greatest

0:23:44 > 0:23:49revolution in artificial intelligence.As this giant tech

0:23:49 > 0:23:54show gets underway, China's spending on AI and robotics is very much in

0:23:54 > 0:24:00evidence. This case recognises and follows its owner. And here is the

0:24:00 > 0:24:08biggest development, with the slogan, AI is changing the world at

0:24:08 > 0:24:13China speed. It calls itself China's Google, it is already a leader in

0:24:13 > 0:24:16technologies like facial recognition, and they are confident

0:24:16 > 0:24:21China can challenge America's AI dominance.China is quickly catching

0:24:21 > 0:24:28up and the gap is closing. But China has a lot more people, a much larger

0:24:28 > 0:24:33scale. There is a big market. So I think that is a foundation for China

0:24:33 > 0:24:40to prevail in the AI agent.Google, which usually keeps a low profile at

0:24:40 > 0:24:43this show, has chosen to put its name everywhere across Las Vegas,

0:24:43 > 0:24:49stressing its leading role in AI.We are trying our best to stay ahead.

0:24:49 > 0:24:52There is lots of great competition, lots of excitement, and it means

0:24:52 > 0:24:57there is a lot of investment going into this area, so I think you are

0:24:57 > 0:25:00going to see the field advance pretty quickly. It is arriving quite

0:25:00 > 0:25:07slowly. And in downtown Las Vegas, I booked a ride in an autonomous taxi.

0:25:07 > 0:25:11No steering wheel, no pedals, no driver, and it is made by a French

0:25:11 > 0:25:14transport company. It is not just America and China are racing to get

0:25:14 > 0:25:20ahead in AI. Part of the fun is the black cabbie

0:25:20 > 0:25:24talking to you from the front. I particularly like the bag that

0:25:24 > 0:25:29recognises and follows its own, so you can't lose your bike in the

0:25:29 > 0:25:34airport. Maybe I can sit my children on it. I definitely want one of

0:25:34 > 0:25:42those. This is Beyond 100 Days from the BBC.Coming up for the worse on

0:25:42 > 0:25:47the BBC News Channel and BBC World News, he walks the walk but can he

0:25:47 > 0:25:50talk the talk? The French president is in trying and trying to do a

0:25:50 > 0:25:55trade deal in his attempt to speak Mandarin. And democracy on ice, the

0:25:55 > 0:25:59country that has been without a government for 12 months. What

0:25:59 > 0:26:02impact is it having on everyday life?

0:26:18 > 0:26:23One of our weather watchers did manage to find a bit of sunshine on

0:26:23 > 0:26:27the Isle of Lewis. Northern Scotland, part of Cumbria, some good

0:26:27 > 0:26:31sunny skies today, and we will see that sunshine return tomorrow. This

0:26:31 > 0:26:34weather front has been bringing rain to Northern Ireland. Overnight that

0:26:34 > 0:26:39will spread northwards and eastwards. With clearing skies to

0:26:39 > 0:26:43some parts of western England, Wales and Northern Ireland, temperatures

0:26:43 > 0:26:47will drop. There could be some icy conditions to start Wednesday

0:26:47 > 0:26:50morning. Take it easy first thing. Another great start in the

0:26:50 > 0:26:55north-east of Scotland. And there will be some lingering fog patches

0:26:55 > 0:27:04in the West. But foremost, this sunshine be back and much better.

0:27:04 > 0:27:10Northern Scotland grade, misty over the hills. But in other parts of

0:27:10 > 0:27:16western Scotland, it will brighten up. Still fairly cloudy for some in

0:27:16 > 0:27:21eastern England. I can't rule out the right moment but further west

0:27:21 > 0:27:24sunny spells developing for most. Not everyone will see blue skies

0:27:24 > 0:27:29overhead. And with winds light, it should feel much more pleasant than

0:27:29 > 0:27:33it has done over the past few days. On Wednesday night, outbreaks of

0:27:33 > 0:27:36rain, a few showers close to the south-west of the country. They will

0:27:36 > 0:27:40gradually fade away through the night. And with light winds, clear

0:27:40 > 0:27:43skies, these are the city centre temperatures. However, the risk of

0:27:43 > 0:27:49frost. And not just widespread frost, fog patches will become that

0:27:49 > 0:27:56bit more expensive -- extensive. Exactly who will stick with the fog

0:27:56 > 0:28:02all day long, one of those things difficult to say at this moment.

0:28:02 > 0:28:07Parts of Northern Ireland. But elsewhere most of the morning will

0:28:07 > 0:28:10clear, the sunshine will come out, another pleasant day but still

0:28:10 > 0:28:15feeling on the chilly side. A similar day on Friday, most at risk

0:28:15 > 0:28:19of four, sunny spells breakthrough in the West, but we finished the day

0:28:19 > 0:28:23with rain across Ireland and some gusty winds to go with it. That

0:28:23 > 0:28:26weather front will try to work its way in this weekend. A slow process

0:28:26 > 0:28:30though. Rain heavy at first, like that but you later.

0:30:10 > 0:30:13This is Beyond 100 Days, with me Katty Kay in Washington

0:30:13 > 0:30:14and Christian Fraser's in London.

0:30:14 > 0:30:15Our top stories.

0:30:15 > 0:30:17North Korea offers to send a high-level delegation

0:30:17 > 0:30:19to next month's Winter Olympics,

0:30:19 > 0:30:22after the first talks with the South in more than two years.

0:30:22 > 0:30:24A former South Korean ambassador tells this programme,

0:30:24 > 0:30:27he's sceptical.

0:30:27 > 0:30:30Well, they have certainly made sure that nothing will go wrong

0:30:30 > 0:30:31with the Olympics so, in that sense,

0:30:31 > 0:30:34they have given something.

0:30:34 > 0:30:41It sounds a little like organised crime.

0:30:41 > 0:30:43Donald Trump hosts a roundtable meeting between Republicans

0:30:43 > 0:30:45and Democrats about security and immigration in a rare

0:30:45 > 0:30:46show of bipartisanship.

0:30:46 > 0:30:53Coming up in the next half hour.

0:30:53 > 0:30:59Then we have a special report about the murder of Ukrainian lawyer. And

0:30:59 > 0:31:04how Prince Harry got to grips with this cool handshake! Send us your

0:31:04 > 0:31:06thoughts. This is the hashtag.

0:31:18 > 0:31:23If Donald Trump is called for an interview by special prosecutor

0:31:23 > 0:31:26Robert Muller, how would that actually work? And piercing, under

0:31:26 > 0:31:32oath? All of those questions are relevant to reports that discussions

0:31:32 > 0:31:38between the camps have just begun. Donald Trump has repeatedly said

0:31:38 > 0:31:40Mr Trump has repeatedly said that there was no collusion

0:31:40 > 0:31:41between Russia and his campaign.

0:31:41 > 0:31:43He also says he understands he is not personally

0:31:43 > 0:31:44under investigation.

0:31:44 > 0:31:48But the FBI probe is wide ranging, many people in the President's inner

0:31:48 > 0:31:49circle have been interviewed and there is certainly

0:31:49 > 0:31:52much that Mr Mueller would like to ask Mr Trump.

0:31:52 > 0:31:55With us now is former federal prosector Barak Cohen.

0:31:55 > 0:31:59thank you for coming to the studio. How does this work when a special

0:31:59 > 0:32:02prosecutor decides that they want to talk to the president?Situations

0:32:02 > 0:32:11like this, rare. We understand that. But how it has worked in the past,

0:32:11 > 0:32:18what likely is going to happen, the special counsel will be negotiating

0:32:18 > 0:32:24with lawyers.Presumably, the President wants to keep his lawyer

0:32:24 > 0:32:33with him?Absolutely.Preferring to do this in writing, sit down?The

0:32:33 > 0:32:38preferences to do this in writing, lawyers can prepare what you intend

0:32:38 > 0:32:42to say. What the person being interviewed intends to say. That

0:32:42 > 0:32:49might happen. The special counsel is probably pushing for an interview,

0:32:49 > 0:32:53certainly the president is going to want that. Some speculation, the

0:32:53 > 0:33:00fact that Muller is in negotiations with the President's lawyers, it

0:33:00 > 0:33:04could be drawing towards an end. Would you conclude that? It is

0:33:04 > 0:33:13closer to the end.Why would that be the case?Depending on what the

0:33:13 > 0:33:17president has said, any information they could want to follow up on.The

0:33:17 > 0:33:23implication, interview everybody else?I expect the president is

0:33:23 > 0:33:26probably the last person that they would want to interview, it could

0:33:26 > 0:33:31result in a follow-up interview.The New York Times said that what Muller

0:33:31 > 0:33:39is really interviewed on, Flynn, and the firing of James Comey.

0:33:39 > 0:33:44Obstruction of justice? Would you agree? If that is what they are

0:33:44 > 0:33:47after, I would agree that they are looking at evidence of obstruction

0:33:47 > 0:33:54of justice.Where does that leave the President? Can the president of

0:33:54 > 0:34:03strong justice?Exactly. Some bigger questions, if he can be killed

0:34:03 > 0:34:10accountable -- held accountable.I was just going to say, it is very

0:34:10 > 0:34:16American, this? I remember when Nicolas Sarkozy was under

0:34:16 > 0:34:21investigation in France. He was hauled in. The same for Silvio

0:34:21 > 0:34:30Berlusconi. Why does the American president get a say?At the end of

0:34:30 > 0:34:40the day, even though the information is critical and part and the office

0:34:40 > 0:34:45deserves a certain part of difference.Thank you. It is going

0:34:45 > 0:34:53to be fascinating to see how those meetings take place. And whether the

0:34:53 > 0:34:56President, Even if he can be undisciplined on Twitter, he has

0:34:56 > 0:35:01actually also sat with lawyers many times. Being disciplined when he

0:35:01 > 0:35:11needs to be. The trick is... If you are being grilled, be on top of

0:35:11 > 0:35:16facts. We know that he does not have that capacity. Does not have that

0:35:16 > 0:35:20capacity to sit down read! Also going to have to remember the issue

0:35:20 > 0:35:25of obstruction, Bill Clinton was undone on the perjury issue when he

0:35:25 > 0:35:33was impeached in the 1990s. It is more of a pattern. Something that

0:35:33 > 0:35:34Muller would think easier to work with.

0:35:34 > 0:35:37In Ukraine, the funeral has taken place of a young female lawyer

0:35:37 > 0:35:39whose murder is rapidly becoming a test case

0:35:39 > 0:35:44for attempts to reform the country's judiciary.

0:35:44 > 0:35:46Irina Nozdrovska's body was discovered five days

0:35:46 > 0:35:48after she appeared in court to ensure that a drunk driver

0:35:48 > 0:35:51who killed her sister would not be released early.

0:35:51 > 0:35:54From Kiev, here's our correspondent Jonah Fisher.

0:35:54 > 0:35:57In a small town just outside Kiev, hundreds of people came

0:35:57 > 0:36:00to say goodbye to a woman whose life and death has reminded Ukraine

0:36:00 > 0:36:09of how far it still has to go.

0:36:09 > 0:36:19This is Irina Nozdrovska two years ago in full flow.

0:36:20 > 0:36:23She was leading a very public campaign to try and make sure

0:36:23 > 0:36:25that the drink-driver responsible for killing her sister

0:36:25 > 0:36:26was prosecuted.

0:36:26 > 0:36:33It was an uphill struggle.

0:36:33 > 0:36:36The man was well connected, the nephew of a local judge.

0:36:36 > 0:36:39But against the odds, two weeks ago, he had a jail sentence

0:36:39 > 0:36:49of seven years confirmed.

0:36:49 > 0:36:51But Irina Nozdrovska's activism made her powerful enemies and five

0:36:51 > 0:36:54days after the court hearing, her battered body was discovered

0:36:54 > 0:36:55stabbed and dumped.

0:36:55 > 0:36:57"They murdered you for telling the truth", says her father,

0:36:57 > 0:37:05as he weeps over her coffin.

0:37:05 > 0:37:08"They removed you because you were standing in their way."

0:37:08 > 0:37:10Her mother cries out for her first dead daughter, Svitlana ,

0:37:10 > 0:37:11to welcome Irina to heaven.

0:37:11 > 0:37:14Ukraine has a pretty miserable track record of solving high-profile

0:37:14 > 0:37:19murder cases like this one.

0:37:19 > 0:37:22The justice system is widely seen as being rotten to its very core

0:37:22 > 0:37:26and at the service of the rich and well connected.

0:37:26 > 0:37:28Under pressure, Ukraine's police service has arrested a man,

0:37:28 > 0:37:31but at the funeral there was deep scepticism about whether justice

0:37:31 > 0:37:34would eventually be done.

0:37:34 > 0:37:37People understand that the judicial system is not about people at all.

0:37:37 > 0:37:39We understand that it is about corruption first of all,

0:37:39 > 0:37:42because all these judges, for 25 years, was corrupt with politicians.

0:37:42 > 0:37:47The whole system is corrupt.

0:37:47 > 0:37:50Having fought and, it seems, died to get justice for her sister,

0:37:50 > 0:37:53the murder of Irina Nozdrovska is now a very public test case

0:37:53 > 0:38:03as to whether Ukraine really is changing.

0:38:08 > 0:38:18It seems everybody is on the China charm offensive. Trumps... Then the

0:38:18 > 0:38:22British international trade Secretary. And the French secretary.

0:38:22 > 0:38:27Macron and the Chinese president have been talking about trade.

0:38:27 > 0:38:36Offering to open up the economy to investment, it is not just Macron's

0:38:36 > 0:38:46policies that have been

0:38:49 > 0:38:54causing make our planet great again. This is in Mandarin.

0:40:06 > 0:40:11We are going to do a test at the end of the programme. I am going to ask

0:40:11 > 0:40:18you to say that in Mandarin. Very good linguist. He has done this

0:40:18 > 0:40:28before. He had this fly on the wall, behind-the-scenes view. But I want

0:40:28 > 0:40:34to talk about how far Britain is lagging behind in the gift giving

0:40:34 > 0:40:40diplomacy. He took with him an eight-year-old horse! Do you know

0:40:40 > 0:40:47what we gave to the Chinese? A signed England football shirt. You

0:40:47 > 0:40:51have got to do better. I think Theresa May could be going later

0:40:51 > 0:40:59this year. The next month or so. Going to take corgis? Bulldog?

0:40:59 > 0:41:06Dragon? Where do you go? It was interesting. You have got everybody

0:41:06 > 0:41:14trying to woo the Chinese. The French at the moment. And Macron has

0:41:14 > 0:41:19been very complimentary about the Chinese government, the role on

0:41:19 > 0:41:23climate change. Chinese investment around the world, what it means. Id

0:41:23 > 0:41:28just feels like we are in this moment, the centre of gravity

0:41:28 > 0:41:35shifting around. And a lot of people turning up on the doorstep, who

0:41:35 > 0:41:40wouldn't have done years ago. As my editor remaindered me, one gift...

0:41:40 > 0:41:49Some proper armchairs! Just look at these? Almost like Bond armchairs!

0:41:49 > 0:42:00Arm opens up. The trigger inside. We will take them some new chairs. We

0:42:00 > 0:42:01will see how that goes.

0:42:01 > 0:42:04Police in Italy and Germany have arrested 169 people in a joint

0:42:04 > 0:42:06operation against one of Italy's most notorious mafia groups -

0:42:06 > 0:42:10the 'Ndrangheta.

0:42:10 > 0:42:12Most arrests were made in Italy, and include the head

0:42:12 > 0:42:14of the southern province of Crotone, and two other mayors.

0:42:14 > 0:42:16The criminal network is based in southern Italy

0:42:16 > 0:42:21but it has expanded its reach into the rest of Europe.

0:42:21 > 0:42:24Theresa May's cabinet has met for the first time after a reshuffle

0:42:24 > 0:42:29designed to recharge her government.

0:42:29 > 0:42:31The British Prime Minister appointed more women and MPs from ethnic

0:42:31 > 0:42:34minority backgrounds as ministers, at the end of the two-day reshuffle.

0:42:34 > 0:42:42But the most high-profile cabinet ministers have all kept their jobs.

0:42:42 > 0:42:46It was interesting. I think I tweeted this earlier. I have never

0:42:46 > 0:42:52seen the New York Times run any piece about the British Cabinet

0:42:52 > 0:42:56recycle. It was the ways than glowing headline, not changing much.

0:42:56 > 0:43:02I think Number ten have convinced themselves after the budget, after

0:43:02 > 0:43:09signing the deal with the EU, that she ended the year on a good end and

0:43:09 > 0:43:14could resume normal activities. She cannot. It was proving just be. How

0:43:14 > 0:43:19does it happen that Jeremy Hunt, comes to Downing Street and they do

0:43:19 > 0:43:28not know that he is going to move. The Cabinet reshuffle stalls. Senior

0:43:28 > 0:43:34ministers dictating they are not going to leave. They allow spin in

0:43:34 > 0:43:40the press. Going to reflect the country at large. In the end, moving

0:43:40 > 0:43:47the Education Secretary, sacked, Greening, instead put in a middle

0:43:47 > 0:43:53age white man. This is the second time. After the party conference,

0:43:53 > 0:43:55you hit the Cabinet reshuffle that should have been straightforward. It

0:43:55 > 0:44:05is the second time. Surely questions have been asked internally? Do not

0:44:05 > 0:44:11spin it out over two days. More hours of headlines. Than if you did

0:44:11 > 0:44:20it as normal! David Cameron, did it at a canter! Heavy snow has been

0:44:20 > 0:44:27raising the avalanche risk to some areas. Some Switzerland resorts, has

0:44:27 > 0:44:39blogged real and road access.

0:44:40 > 0:44:44So much now. This was the scene at Switzerland. The avalanche risk is

0:44:44 > 0:44:52as high as it has been for almost a decade. Over one metre Ross Noble

0:44:52 > 0:44:57fell in parts of the Alps on Monday. At this Battalion residents

0:44:57 > 0:45:05evacuated. Snow poured down. Villages cut off. Many schools

0:45:05 > 0:45:15closed. This was France.

0:45:17 > 0:45:22We had big noises at first. No tremor. Growls. We ran back to the

0:45:22 > 0:45:29basement.It is always a shock. It is always a shock. It is not nice to

0:45:29 > 0:45:36see. We thought the house was going to explode. Your heart sinks.Ad in

0:45:36 > 0:45:41the shadow of the famous maintenance, over 14,000 tourists

0:45:41 > 0:45:52cannot leave. Snow has blocked road and rail links. Skiing is not

0:45:52 > 0:45:54possible. Closed because of the avalanche danger. Residents and

0:45:54 > 0:45:59holiday-makers are being warned to avoid these roads and follow all of

0:45:59 > 0:46:07the safety advice. Those stranded may have to be patient. Another

0:46:07 > 0:46:16metre of snow has been forecast over the next 24 hours. That is amazing.

0:46:16 > 0:46:23Snow in the Alps... Not unusual. But this is the sahara. Just to prove

0:46:23 > 0:46:31that things are wacky... More than Algeria, rare spell of icy weather.

0:46:31 > 0:46:35Melted. Not long after these pictures.

0:46:35 > 0:46:38Prince Harry and his bride-to-be Meghan Markle have visited

0:46:38 > 0:46:41the studios of a radio station in Brixton in South London

0:46:41 > 0:46:43to learn about its work supporting young people.

0:46:43 > 0:46:46The couple met presenters and staff from Reprezent FM which trains

0:46:46 > 0:46:53hundreds of people every year in media and employment skills.

0:46:53 > 0:46:55Harry and Ms Markle also visited Pop Brixton,

0:46:55 > 0:47:02a community project housing local start-ups and restaurants.

0:47:02 > 0:47:03Down in the hood, Harry.

0:47:03 > 0:47:06Yes, I've been looking at those pictures as well and I just

0:47:06 > 0:47:09want to show you something that went down pretty well

0:47:09 > 0:47:10on today's royal tour.

0:47:10 > 0:47:12Let's just show you the moment where DJ Remi of Reprezent FM

0:47:12 > 0:47:18taught Prince Harry this special handshake.

0:47:19 > 0:47:29OK, so... Fist pump. Up down. To the side. Other side! Rehearsing that

0:47:29 > 0:47:44one more time. Looks as uncool as I am! Yeah! Dad dancing. Who had it

0:47:44 > 0:47:51harder? Macron learning that Mandarin, Prince Harry trying to

0:47:51 > 0:47:56learn that? The every time. You can't do either! No. Mandarin, very

0:47:56 > 0:48:03limited. You totally have not learned the test. Still to come, the

0:48:03 > 0:48:12silent treatment.

0:48:12 > 0:48:14The silent treatment - we return to the world's largest

0:48:14 > 0:48:17tech trade show in Las Vegas, where one robot went rogue.

0:48:18 > 0:48:20The nominations for this year's British Academy Film Awards

0:48:20 > 0:48:21have been announced.

0:48:21 > 0:48:24The fantasy romance The Shape of Water leads the field

0:48:24 > 0:48:25with 12 nominations.

0:48:25 > 0:48:27It's also been announced that Joanna Lumley will host

0:48:27 > 0:48:28the awards ceremony, replacing Stephen Fry,

0:48:28 > 0:48:38who's stepping down from the role.

0:48:38 > 0:48:39Here's our entertainment correspondent Lizo Mzimba.

0:48:39 > 0:48:41The Shape of Water, a tender science fiction fantasy,

0:48:41 > 0:48:44with Britain's Sally Hawkins playing a mute cleaner who falls in love

0:48:44 > 0:48:54with a water creature.

0:48:54 > 0:48:56A Best Actress nomination for Hawkins, one of 12

0:48:56 > 0:48:57for the movie, including Best Film.

0:48:57 > 0:48:59You have wanted this your entire adult life.

0:48:59 > 0:49:00No, since the nursery.

0:49:00 > 0:49:09Just behind, two films have nine nomination.

0:49:09 > 0:49:10Wartime drama Darkest Hour, where both Gary Oldman

0:49:10 > 0:49:13and Kristin Scott Thomas are recognised for Best Actor

0:49:13 > 0:49:14and Best Supporting Actress.

0:49:14 > 0:49:17So Mildred Hayes, why did you put up these billboards?

0:49:17 > 0:49:19My daughter Angela was murdered seven months ago.

0:49:19 > 0:49:21And dark drama Three Billboards Outside Ebbing, Missouri.

0:49:21 > 0:49:23Like The Shape of Water, its strongly female led,

0:49:23 > 0:49:25with Frances McDormand nominated for Best Actress.

0:49:25 > 0:49:27This is a year where, unusually, two of the three most nominated

0:49:27 > 0:49:30films feature strong women at the centre, with the men

0:49:30 > 0:49:35only supporting roles.

0:49:35 > 0:49:37We are levelling up very very quickly to the same level.

0:49:37 > 0:49:40We have still got to fight, stand up, be brave, be bold,

0:49:40 > 0:49:43be resolute, and say, we are going to make things even.

0:49:43 > 0:49:51We will make them equal from now on.

0:49:51 > 0:49:54The theme of, to an extent, focussing on women is continued,

0:49:54 > 0:49:56with Bafta announcing that it will soon be publishing

0:49:56 > 0:49:58a set of cross-industry workplace guidelines,

0:49:58 > 0:50:05following the sexual harassment revelations of the past few months.

0:50:05 > 0:50:07This is also the week when Oscar voters

0:50:07 > 0:50:12are deciding their nominations.

0:50:12 > 0:50:15It is likely much attention will be paid this year more than ever,

0:50:15 > 0:50:17as to whether they will be championing female-led stories

0:50:17 > 0:50:21and female storytellers.

0:50:24 > 0:50:27You're watching Beyond 100 Days.

0:50:27 > 0:50:30A year ago today in Northern Ireland, the late Martin McGuinness

0:50:30 > 0:50:31resigned as the Stormont Deputy First Minister.

0:50:31 > 0:50:33His party, Sinn Fein, and the Democratic Unionists

0:50:33 > 0:50:35have been unable to reach an agreement

0:50:35 > 0:50:41to restore the power-sharing coalition.

0:50:41 > 0:50:42Civil servants have been running the country,

0:50:42 > 0:50:44but they're not able to make any major decisions.

0:50:44 > 0:50:47Our Ireland Correspondent Chris Page has been looking at the impact

0:50:47 > 0:50:54of 12 months without government.

0:50:54 > 0:50:56Just like everywhere else in the UK, the health service

0:50:56 > 0:50:58in Northern Ireland is under severe pressure this winter,

0:50:58 > 0:51:01but what's different here is that there's no Health Minister.

0:51:01 > 0:51:03Three months before it collapsed, the devolved Government published

0:51:03 > 0:51:06a plan to restructure the NHS after a report said the system

0:51:06 > 0:51:15was at breaking point.

0:51:15 > 0:51:16No problem with your blood pressure before?

0:51:16 > 0:51:17No.

0:51:17 > 0:51:19This GP says urgent reforms are being held up

0:51:19 > 0:51:21because ministers are out of office.

0:51:21 > 0:51:24We already see it with the long waiting lists for secondary care.

0:51:24 > 0:51:26We see it with the lack of investment in social care.

0:51:26 > 0:51:30We see it with the issues around the out of hours service and we see

0:51:30 > 0:51:33it with the heavy demands on access to GP services, and that's where

0:51:33 > 0:51:35the patients will see it primarily.

0:51:35 > 0:51:37Others who rely on public money to do their jobs say that

0:51:37 > 0:51:38uncertainty is unacceptable.

0:51:38 > 0:51:48You're too neat by nature.

0:51:48 > 0:51:49This workshop for people with dementia is one

0:51:49 > 0:51:52of hundreds of programmes run by community arts organisations.

0:51:52 > 0:51:54They say their future is shaky because of funding cuts,

0:51:54 > 0:52:00but they feel they've nowhere to go to make their case.

0:52:00 > 0:52:02We have no Government, we have no champion,

0:52:02 > 0:52:03we have no minister.

0:52:03 > 0:52:05So we've nobody to turn to to support policy changes,

0:52:06 > 0:52:07to support the communities here.

0:52:07 > 0:52:10This is a crisis moment for us.

0:52:10 > 0:52:13The political crisis is apparently still as deep as a year ago.

0:52:13 > 0:52:15Martin McGuinness ended Sinn Fein's uneasy partnership

0:52:15 > 0:52:17with the Democratic Unionists when he resigned as

0:52:17 > 0:52:23Deputy First Minister.

0:52:23 > 0:52:25There have since been elections to Stormont and Westminster

0:52:25 > 0:52:34and several rounds of talks to restore power-sharing.

0:52:34 > 0:52:37But many days of negotiations have failed to break the deadlock.

0:52:37 > 0:52:39The DUP and Sinn Fein increased their dominance in both

0:52:39 > 0:52:42elections last year and they blame each other for the

0:52:42 > 0:52:48Stormont stalemate.

0:52:48 > 0:52:50In the meantime, unmade decisions are piling up.

0:52:50 > 0:52:52Half of the construction industry's business comes

0:52:52 > 0:52:53from public sector projects.

0:52:53 > 0:53:01Workers are concerned about a downturn in demand.

0:53:01 > 0:53:03Within the next few months, unless decisions are made

0:53:03 > 0:53:06and projects and things start to move forward, I think

0:53:06 > 0:53:08we could see a situation where we're seeing layoffs

0:53:08 > 0:53:11in the construction industry.

0:53:11 > 0:53:13We need to see the Executive and the Assembly reestablished

0:53:13 > 0:53:14as soon as possible.

0:53:14 > 0:53:17The British and Irish governments are aiming to restart

0:53:17 > 0:53:19talks between the parties in the coming weeks.

0:53:19 > 0:53:21At the moment, there's no sign of a deal to bring devolution

0:53:21 > 0:53:23out of the deep freeze.

0:53:23 > 0:53:27Chris Page, BBC News, Belfast.

0:53:27 > 0:53:31That goes back to what you said yesterday, a lot of government at

0:53:31 > 0:53:35local level. The world record for democracy going without an elected

0:53:35 > 0:53:41government, Belgium, 2010/11. 589 days! With out any government. If I

0:53:41 > 0:53:48remember correctly, national debt went down! A lot of people who do

0:53:48 > 0:53:53not like government. Especially in this country. We can go back to that

0:53:53 > 0:54:00consumer electronic show at Las Vegas. We find out what gadgets, all

0:54:00 > 0:54:04of the different things, what difference debt went down! They

0:54:04 > 0:54:11make. The great and the good, very keen to show off the advances,

0:54:11 > 0:54:17including this robot Chloe. But not everything went according to plan.

0:54:17 > 0:54:26Allow me to introduce Chloe. Hello Chloe.Good morning. I hope you are

0:54:26 > 0:54:31well. What can I do for you today?

0:54:42 > 0:54:49Chloe. What is my schedule? You need to go to the gym at 10am today.

0:54:49 > 0:55:02Power up! Power up! Smart learner has set the washer to sportswear.

0:55:02 > 0:55:13Chloe. Am I going to be ready for the washer cycle? Even some robots

0:55:13 > 0:55:21have bad days... Chloe. What is going to be for dinner tonight?

0:55:24 > 0:55:33OK. Chloe... Not going to talk to me. Does not like me, evidently.

0:55:33 > 0:55:40Reminiscent of my household. They do not respond. I have got Alexa,

0:55:40 > 0:55:47revolutionary. Does not talk to me. Probably the only woman who listens

0:55:47 > 0:55:57to you. I do the dishes. The Chinese, make the planet great

0:55:57 > 0:56:00again. Mandarin.
