:00:00. > :00:32.Every year, as spring comes knocking on the door,

:00:33. > :00:34.Barcelona opens its gates to the Mobile World Congress,

:00:35. > :00:37.a place where anyone with anything mobile comes to flaunt their mobile

:00:38. > :00:44.Almost all the biggest mobile manufacturers,

:00:45. > :00:47.with one notable exception, Apple, launched their latest

:00:48. > :00:53.devices at this event, and this year is no different.

:00:54. > :01:00.And in fact, if there is one company that can rival

:01:01. > :01:03.Apple in terms of high-profile product launches these days,

:01:04. > :01:06.This is the new Samsung phone, the S7 and S7 Edge.

:01:07. > :01:09.More of an improvement than a complete

:01:10. > :01:10.redesign on last year's model, the S6.

:01:11. > :01:13.But it does have some favourite features from older models too.

:01:14. > :01:15.All hail the return of the much-missed

:01:16. > :01:26.And, yes, Samsung is once again waterproof, it is true.

:01:27. > :01:29.Maybe the most notable new feature is the game recording mode,

:01:30. > :01:31.which means you can record as you play

:01:32. > :01:41.your favourite title, a game caster's dream.

:01:42. > :01:44.The S7 Edge now curves all the way around, should you care,

:01:45. > :01:47.and it even has a ruler, a killer app,

:01:48. > :01:48.ladies and gentlemen - until someone invents,

:01:49. > :01:56.LG also unveiled its new flagship device, the G5.

:01:57. > :01:59.This is a modular phone where the bottom slides out to

:02:00. > :02:02.make space for other attachments, like this music player

:02:03. > :02:04.by Bang Olufsen, which can play back hi-fi audio.

:02:05. > :02:06.And a camera attachment, LG Cam Plus,

:02:07. > :02:08.essentially reshapes the device for a better camera grip,

:02:09. > :02:11.gives the phone extra juice and has a physical

:02:12. > :02:23.In fact there haven't been many other big phone announcements

:02:24. > :02:29.Sony has launched a selection of mid-range

:02:30. > :02:37.Huawei, now the third biggest manufacturer of mobile

:02:38. > :02:41.phones in the world, has no new phones on show but it has

:02:42. > :02:42.launched this new tablet-computer hybrid

:02:43. > :02:45.Is that the surface pro? I hear you ask.

:02:46. > :02:47.No, it's the Mate Book, pretty similar to Microsoft's

:02:48. > :02:51.Although it is a bit nicer, a bit lighter and a bit slimmer.

:02:52. > :02:53.Yeah, so it seems the interest in new tablets

:02:54. > :02:58.The devices are no longer flying off the shelves,

:02:59. > :03:01.and so the industry is trying to refocus its efforts

:03:02. > :03:14.LJ Rich and Kate Russell are on the MWC

:03:15. > :03:16.show floor looking at some of the possibilities.

:03:17. > :03:18.Internet of Things is the buzz phrase flying around this place

:03:19. > :03:21.Does anyone actually know what it means yet?

:03:22. > :03:32.It means everything you have and everything you see will be

:03:33. > :03:37.Well, technology is going very fast and

:03:38. > :03:41.wearable devices, this is the future, I guess.

:03:42. > :03:43.Why would you connect your toothbrush?

:03:44. > :03:45.Because my dentist says it's going to be good

:03:46. > :03:50.Everywhere you look there seems to be somebody

:03:51. > :03:56.somewhere claiming that their device is smarter than the next.

:03:57. > :03:58.The connected fridge horse is still being flogged with food

:03:59. > :04:00.ordering through a built-in tablet, though

:04:01. > :04:03.why this is better than using a regular tablet

:04:04. > :04:10.When we get connected food containers it might well be able

:04:11. > :04:12.to tell you when the milk has gone off.

:04:13. > :04:21.You know, in case your nose and your taste buds suddenly stopped working.

:04:22. > :04:25.We are used to seeing contactless payment symbols on our credit

:04:26. > :04:27.and debit cards these days but MasterCard are stuffing

:04:28. > :04:29.this technology into all kinds of wearables.

:04:30. > :04:32.I could pay with this dress, I could pay with a glove,

:04:33. > :04:43.Michael is actually wearing an NFC payment band

:04:44. > :04:47.that is measuring his heartbeat to authenticate the transaction.

:04:48. > :04:50.This will give us as consumers much more

:04:51. > :04:54.peace of mind, especially when it comes to making bigger purchases

:04:55. > :04:59.The reason I can't where it is as soon as I take it off it's

:05:00. > :05:03.not going to be valid any more and I won't be able to clear any

:05:04. > :05:06.transactions, so I'm afraid, Michael, you're coming with me.

:05:07. > :05:09.And for the selfie obsessed, your face could soon be

:05:10. > :05:11.your fortune as biometrics replaces the MasterCard secure code

:05:12. > :05:13.by authenticating a transaction with a

:05:14. > :05:46.Shoppers need to blink to prove to MasterCard they are alive.

:05:47. > :05:51.This whole thing is solar powered. The idea is that these grapes will

:05:52. > :05:58.be able to tell the farmer when it is time to pick them! The software

:05:59. > :06:03.connects this data alongside other things, like sunlight intensity, and

:06:04. > :06:08.this gets them to be farmer's mobile device. It doesn't stop there.

:06:09. > :06:14.Monitoring things like this helps farmers know what the plant

:06:15. > :06:18.experienced. Once more data is gathered the software should be able

:06:19. > :06:20.to predict the quality and quantity of the produce. The system is

:06:21. > :06:30.currently on trial in for German vineyards.

:06:31. > :06:33.So we are seeing improvements in phone screens, phone

:06:34. > :06:36.One thing we have not seen much change

:06:37. > :06:37.in over the years is phone batteries.

:06:38. > :06:40.They are pretty much all still rechargeable lithium-ion

:06:41. > :06:43.Researchers at the Graphene Institute in the UK have taken this

:06:44. > :06:47.phone's battery out and replaced it with a super capacitor

:06:48. > :06:51.Graphene is this wonder material that everyone

:06:52. > :06:56.It is really conductive, it's flexible,

:06:57. > :07:03.And it turns out it can store a vast amount of energy too and absorb that

:07:04. > :07:07.A few seconds of juice from the mains can keep

:07:08. > :07:11.The vision is that one day our mobile devices could have

:07:12. > :07:14.batteries, which not only charge super quickly but also last a lot

:07:15. > :07:29.Here at Mobile World Congress graphene is making an appearance.

:07:30. > :07:31.Like this graphene-coated film that could be used

:07:32. > :07:35.There is a small area here dedicated to these

:07:36. > :07:39.How about this to feed our ever-hungry mobile

:07:40. > :07:50.It doesn't mean you can charge your phone in five minutes,

:07:51. > :07:52.but you can then plug your phone into it on the go.

:07:53. > :07:56.This is the first prototype and will only charge a large phone

:07:57. > :08:02.By next year they hope to have the third prototype out

:08:03. > :08:04.which will be able to fully charge it.

:08:05. > :08:08.Inside the battery pack is layers, about 25 layers

:08:09. > :08:21.That allows this battery pack to charge super fast.

:08:22. > :08:27.You can then pop it in your bag and take it with you.

:08:28. > :08:29.Another possible solution is a hydrogen fuel cell battery.

:08:30. > :08:31.With something this size, think of it

:08:32. > :08:34.like a mini power station using hydrogen to make power.

:08:35. > :08:35.So it's not refillable or rechargeable, you

:08:36. > :08:38.would buy replacement batteries like this and this could last up

:08:39. > :08:46.to a week alongside your typical lithium-ion battery in here.

:08:47. > :08:49.The great thing about these is it to be

:08:50. > :09:02.powered completely off the grid and it's a green energy source.

:09:03. > :09:05.One of the problems with VR is its traditionally quite a lonely

:09:06. > :09:16.Before we do we are going to do some training so that you are accustomed

:09:17. > :09:20.LJ? Yes?

:09:21. > :09:25.You've now been promoted to lieutenant.

:09:26. > :09:28.This is a space landing game where you read instructions out loud.

:09:29. > :09:30.Some of them might be for you, some for

:09:31. > :09:38.We interact together to land our rover.

:09:39. > :09:41.Looking at each panel activates it and moving the controllers in front

:09:42. > :09:46.of me changes the value.

:09:47. > :09:49.It's a bit like the collaborative gaming app Space Team.

:09:50. > :09:57.This is the first demo that I've played with in VR that actually

:09:58. > :09:59.is sharing the space with other people.

:10:00. > :10:03.And I can see this becoming quite a thing.

:10:04. > :10:12.I've always said that VR is lonely, not any more.

:10:13. > :10:14.That's pretty much it for our coverage of the Mobile

:10:15. > :10:18.But just on that thought of virtual reality, you may have noticed

:10:19. > :10:20.there is not that much content available for your VR

:10:21. > :10:27.Samsung has just announced the Gear 360, which is a 360 camera,

:10:28. > :10:29.so you can record your surroundings and then watch it back

:10:30. > :10:33.It's two lenses, one pointing that way, one pointing that way.

:10:34. > :10:35.They are both really fish-eye lenses, and so

:10:36. > :10:38.together they give you a 360 picture, which you can see

:10:39. > :10:40.being streamed live over Wi-Fi direct to

:10:41. > :10:47.This is one of a few 360 cameras around.

:10:48. > :10:57.Another is LG's newly announced 360 Cam,

:10:58. > :11:00.catchy, which records video and stitches it into a 360 sphere

:11:01. > :11:04.Users of Samsung's Gear 360 will have to transfer the recording

:11:05. > :11:09.That's what's doing the stitching of Talia filming some

:11:10. > :11:13.360 footage of Talia filming some 360 footage.

:11:14. > :11:15.Wow, that was all rather matter wasn't it?

:11:16. > :11:18.And who knows, this may be the thing that
