:01:10. > :01:12.Over the past year, one or two top-end TVs have started
:01:13. > :01:16.to offer a new format which some are daring to call a game-changing
:01:17. > :01:23.They are calling it "High Dynamic Range," HDR,
:01:24. > :01:27.and this year it is set to be a thing on many new industry TVs.
:01:28. > :01:31.But is it just industry puff, or is it really time to buy a new TV
:01:32. > :01:37.We asked Dan Simmons to find out what HDR is, what it does,
:01:38. > :01:45.What interests me is what it looks like.
:01:46. > :01:48.Now, if that's going to have ten letters and numbers behind it,
:01:49. > :01:57.so be it, but I wouldn't be able to tell you what they are.
:01:58. > :02:00.I don't think many people know about High Dynamic Range itself.
:02:01. > :02:02.Most people when they first see it take a step
:02:03. > :02:08.Because sometimes to them it looks to them as if the person is actually
:02:09. > :02:16.Ted has been selling TVs for 18 years.
:02:17. > :02:20.He says it is a big deal so I have come to the HQ of Sony to
:02:21. > :02:37.And you won't be able to see this because you are watching in HD
:02:38. > :02:46.What more am I going to get from something called HDR?
:02:47. > :02:49.That's what we have set up on this TV, you can see
:02:50. > :02:53.HDR is the new broadcasting standard which gives you much more colour
:02:54. > :02:59.and brightness information compared to regular 4K.
:03:00. > :03:02.These are both 4K pictures but this one has High Dynamic Range.
:03:03. > :03:05.For example, you can see the skin tones are much
:03:06. > :03:17.HDR cameras capture colour information using a longer ten bit
:03:18. > :03:33.So more colour hues are available, making things look more real.
:03:34. > :03:35.For the first time, these TVs can play that back.
:03:36. > :03:39.Our eyes can see a huge spectrum of brightness, about 15 stops' worth.
:03:40. > :03:41.But up until now TVs have had a problem
:03:42. > :03:46.The picture burns out too easily or dark bits lose detail, for example.
:03:47. > :03:49.HDR delivers 85% of what most of us can see, resulting in a picture that
:03:50. > :03:53.holds on to the darker detail, even when bright lights are in shot.
:03:54. > :03:59.And in here, look at all that detail in the trees.
:04:00. > :04:07.And these suns, one is quite big and the other is much smaller.
:04:08. > :04:10.Is that something you get when you shoot in HDR?
:04:11. > :04:13.Yeah, when you are shooting in HDR you are capturing more brightness
:04:14. > :04:16.information so you don't get a washed out effect that you have with
:04:17. > :04:20.But with the new broadcast standard everything getting washed
:04:21. > :04:36.LG announced last week that 75% of its new TV sets this year would
:04:37. > :04:39.It's OLED screens will show even more detail in the darker ranges,
:04:40. > :04:42.it says, and it has teamed up with Dolby to support a sort
:04:43. > :04:55.Dolby Vision allows for even more details to be captured and displayed
:04:56. > :05:00.Now there is a rush to get content filmed in HDR to our screens.
:05:01. > :05:01.Amazon and Netflix have limited offerings
:05:02. > :05:04.and YouTube says it will be next, with broadcasters expected in 2017.
:05:05. > :05:07.And the new 4K BluRay disc players support both Dolby Vision
:05:08. > :05:29.With compatible TVs coming to shops this year in all
:05:30. > :05:32.but the smallest budget price ranges, the industry hopes will have
:05:33. > :05:35.HDR then, the better, brighter, darker screen.

:06:27. > :06:41.Dr Ahmed's company required a special player to enable live
:06:42. > :06:44.streaming and in the future the developers hope for more features.
:06:45. > :06:46.We would love an option for live chatting so the students
:06:47. > :06:50.can ask questions to the doctor and the surgeon can respond to them
:06:51. > :06:58.The doctor explains to his students as he does
:06:59. > :07:03.It's such a great opportunity for people who would not normally
:07:04. > :07:06.be able to see such an operation to learn from it.
:07:07. > :07:10.If you are there in person you won't be touching the patient, you are
:07:11. > :07:14.But now you can look over the patient instead of being
:07:15. > :07:19.The main selling point is that it puts you in places you would
:07:20. > :07:23.It is not as real as being here, but, whether you'd actually want to
:07:24. > :07:41.Staying airborne for a few minutes, we first met the Jetman Yves Rossy
:07:42. > :07:43.in Dubai, the airline pilot who built himself
:07:44. > :07:48.Until recently, he's had the skies to himself, but now he's
:07:49. > :07:59.Jetman's training centre is based outside of Dubai, today I will
:08:00. > :08:04.In this hangar, they maintained the jet wings which
:08:05. > :08:08.The wings need constant maintenance, he likes to test them up
:08:09. > :08:28.We changed the engine to bigger ones, and we perform.
:08:29. > :08:52.He is a three-time world champion skydiver.
:08:53. > :08:56.I would see what he was doing as a pilot and as a pioneer
