:00:29. > :00:35.This is E3, the biggest video game show on Earth.

:00:36. > :00:38.Every June, the Convention Centre in downtown Los Angeles fills

:00:39. > :00:45.This is where the next year's big releases are announced,

:00:46. > :00:50.with high energy, much fanfare, and gimmicks galore.

:00:51. > :00:52.You can race a car, visit a haunted house,

:00:53. > :01:03.You can pick yourself up a swag bag...

:01:04. > :01:13.For as long as I can remember, all of the big games companies have

:01:14. > :01:16.scrabbled for our attention at this press-and-games-industry-only event.

:01:17. > :01:18.But times are a changing, and not every company is happy

:01:19. > :01:21.shouting over all this noise when they could have their own event

:01:22. > :01:27.a bit later and control the message better.

:01:28. > :01:31.Now, there are a number of big names which are usually at E3 but aren't

:01:32. > :01:37.here this year, Electronic Arts, Activision, and Disney, for example.

:01:38. > :01:39.They don't have booths on the show floor.

:01:40. > :01:41.Turnout's still pretty decent, though.

:01:42. > :01:45.There are still plenty of big hitters here.

:01:46. > :01:51.So joining me on the floor are two awesome end bosses.

:01:52. > :01:53.Colossal Kate Russell, and monstrous Marc Cieslak.

:01:54. > :01:58.And I wanted to start with something I think is really innovative.

:01:59. > :02:01.Not VR in itself, but the fact that someone's finally giving you at home

:02:02. > :02:04.the opportunity to experience what I'm experience when I stick

:02:05. > :02:16.You can now see the world as I'm seeing it!

:02:17. > :02:26.Well, that's all very well for you at home

:02:27. > :02:29.but what we are experiencing is Spen prancing around in a green cupboard.

:02:30. > :02:34.But what this does help to demonstrate is one of the big themes

:02:35. > :02:38.That is that there is are tonnes and tonnes and tonnes of virtual

:02:39. > :02:44.Now that gamers can finally get their hands on virtual reality

:02:45. > :02:46.headsets, the games industry has revealed what you'll actually be

:02:47. > :02:50.This includes old school classics like Battle Zone,

:02:51. > :03:07.As well as recruiting Star Trek cast members,

:03:08. > :03:09.past and present, to show off Ubisoft's Star Trek Bridge

:03:10. > :03:18.Here, four players adopt the role of different Bridge officers,

:03:19. > :03:21.Most of the gameplay mostly consists of operating controls.

:03:22. > :03:28.Perhaps not as thrilling as a real away mission.

:03:29. > :03:34.As soon as you can get us out of here I will be most grateful.

:03:35. > :03:37.Boldly going where few games designers have gone before means

:03:38. > :03:40.new ways of thinking about games and how we play them are crucial

:03:41. > :03:44.for these virtual experiences to work.

:03:45. > :03:46.Sony is going all in with virtual reality.

:03:47. > :03:50.It is a whole bunch of different experiences across different genres

:03:51. > :03:53.which are meant to show off what VR is capable of.

:03:54. > :03:57.They are the kind of games which can only be played wearing a headset

:03:58. > :04:02.Most of the games in here have been teased over the last couple

:04:03. > :04:04.of years, but there are two experiences which are completely

:04:05. > :04:15.This is Scavenger's Odyssey, a shooter.

:04:16. > :04:18.Looks like some kind of mechanised suit.

:04:19. > :04:21.The targeting is done by simply looking at where I wanna shoot.

:04:22. > :04:25.But this is where you start to get a sense that this is a game designed

:04:26. > :04:36.When I look around there isn't really any "up" there isn't

:04:37. > :04:41.It is a bit how I imagine a fly must see the world,

:04:42. > :04:44.being able to jump onto any surface at any angle,

:04:45. > :04:46.which at times can be a tiny bit disorientating.

:04:47. > :04:48.This game is Danger Ball, a futuristic sport.

:04:49. > :04:51.Now, I don't need a controller for this at all.

:04:52. > :04:55.And this allows me to move this bat around.

:04:56. > :04:57.There's more to it than that, though.

:04:58. > :05:00.You can add spin by flicking the ball when it gets

:05:01. > :05:07.Now it's my turn to do VR once again.

:05:08. > :05:11.Four headsets hanging from these spindles,

:05:12. > :05:14.and the idea is several people can take part in the same

:05:15. > :05:18.And, although it can be a game, what they are actually aiming

:05:19. > :05:21.for is an interactive theatre experience, where we all take part

:05:22. > :05:24.and solve different puzzles and share an experience.

:05:25. > :05:26.For example, over here, I can pick up this ball.

:05:27. > :05:34.So, obviously, it is a work in progress.

:05:35. > :05:38.But the idea is that in the future you can have actors also taking part

:05:39. > :05:40.in the experience, taking you through different rooms

:05:41. > :05:43.and helping you to solve different puzzles, for example.

:05:44. > :05:46.At the moment, I have to say it is both weird and interesting.

:05:47. > :05:55.The first big announcement came as no real surprise.

:05:56. > :05:58.With news of the slimmer, more design-centric Xbox OneS having

:05:59. > :06:06.Serving up 4K HDR gaming, and a customisable controller that

:06:07. > :06:09.can suit even the wildest of tastes, at $299, this midcycle release may

:06:10. > :06:12.leave a sour taste in the mouths of families who bought

:06:13. > :06:20.into the chunkier machine just a few years ago.

:06:21. > :06:23.The game footage started rolling with some big titles on the slate,

:06:24. > :06:26.all hoping to win Xbox back some of its edge.

:06:27. > :06:29.Pushing the cross-platform agenda is at the heart of Microsoft's drive

:06:30. > :06:32.to bring Xbox and Windows 10 players together in a slieu

:06:33. > :06:44.Forza Horizon 3 got pulses racing with a demo of its four-player

:06:45. > :06:54.campaign mode on Xbox and PC, scheduled for September release.

:06:55. > :06:57.There's been a lot of speculation about whether there would be any

:06:58. > :06:58.significant hardware upgrades announced here today.

:06:59. > :07:01.And with leaked information about the Xbox OneS coming out

:07:02. > :07:04.in the last 24 hours or so, slimmer sleeker, more design-led,

:07:05. > :07:07.you would be forgiven for thinking that was going to be it.

:07:08. > :07:10.But then, right at the end of the conference, Phil Spencer

:07:11. > :07:15.Project Scorpio will be the next edition to the Xbox family,

:07:16. > :07:18.and it is ultimately the next step in delivering our vision

:07:19. > :07:26.of the future of gaming beyond generations.

:07:27. > :07:28.Being released next autumn, this beast of a box will support

:07:29. > :07:31.high-definition 4K gaming and is VR ready, packing the most powerful

:07:32. > :07:33.graphics card ever put inside a consol.

:07:34. > :07:37.Microsoft is keeping its options open when it comes to VR headsets.

:07:38. > :07:40.Our consoles also run on Windows 10, so all of that innovation

:07:41. > :07:43.and creativity that is happening, we wanted to capture it

:07:44. > :07:46.We needed the computing capabilities of the six terraflops

:07:47. > :07:49.of Project Scorpio to make that possible.

:07:50. > :07:52.So, for us, our strategy is to continue to embrace

:07:53. > :07:54.the incredible community of VR development on Windows and just

:07:55. > :07:59.Microsoft calls it "choice," but are console owners really ready

:08:00. > :08:06.to upgrade their machines every year in the same way PC owners do?

:08:07. > :08:09.Fans of the platform can at least take some solace hearing that games

:08:10. > :08:19.will be playable across all three consoles and Windows 10 PCs,

:08:20. > :08:21.too, without having to buy another copy.

:08:22. > :08:42.They are just going to look a lot sweeter on the new box next year.

:08:43. > :08:44.LA's historic Shrine Auditorium played host to the PlayStation

:08:45. > :08:46.event, which bombastically kicked off with an orchestra playing

:08:47. > :08:49.the theme to the new Norse-inspired God of War title.

:08:50. > :08:52.The event then continued with a brief look at Quantic Dream's

:08:53. > :08:55.Please, you've got to save my little girl.

:08:56. > :09:03.Sony beefed up its VR credentials by announcing the launch date

:09:04. > :09:10.I am happy to announce that, on 13 October, PlayStation VR

:09:11. > :09:14.will make its debut in the United States.

:09:15. > :09:17.As well as announcing 50 games to come out with the thing,

:09:18. > :09:19.including Resident Evil 7, and VR experiences for Call

:09:20. > :09:33.of Duty Infinite, and Final Fantasy 15 VR experience.

:09:34. > :09:36.The biggest applause of the show was reserved for games design legend

:09:37. > :09:45.Kojima showed off a cryptic trailer for a game featuring the walking

:09:46. > :09:47.dead, and lots of dead crabs and fish.

:09:48. > :09:59.And the hits kept on coming, from crowdpleasing fan favourites,

:10:00. > :10:02.to lots of new and original games, which the audience

:10:03. > :10:06.at the Shrine Auditorium absolutely lapped up.

:10:07. > :10:09.In contrast to the Xbox show this morning, where Microsoft teased

:10:10. > :10:11.new technology, Sony has chosen to show new games.

:10:12. > :10:17.However, there is a new, upgraded PS4 in the works.

:10:18. > :10:20.You just cannot see it at this year's E3.

:10:21. > :10:22.You have an upgraded PS4 in the works.

:10:23. > :10:29.Why are we not seeing that at E3 this year?

:10:30. > :10:33.Just as was the case with PlayStation VR,

:10:34. > :10:36.we feel that it is important to show people the new hardware,

:10:37. > :10:39.the new platform, when we have the full range of experiences that

:10:40. > :10:47.But the high end PS4, code-named Neo, that we are working

:10:48. > :10:50.on, is an addition to the existing lineup, not a replacement.

:10:51. > :10:52.And we also were looking at the way in which,

:10:53. > :10:55.perhaps, the technology and innovation cadence has changed

:10:56. > :10:58.And perhaps we have an opportunity to move slightly away from just

:10:59. > :11:00.a static console, that remains absolutely the same for,

:11:01. > :11:04.you know, a period of six, seven, eight years, and perhaps offer,

:11:05. > :11:12.in addition to the current PlayStation 4, something extra.

:11:13. > :11:15.So, as far as PlayStation and Xbox are concerned,

:11:16. > :11:17.there will be more new machines on the horizon than console

:11:18. > :11:35.Much more in the full version but that is it for the short version.

:11:36. > :11:43.You can find some shenanigans on Twitter as well. Next week, we are

:11:44. > :11:46.back in China. It is non-stop. We will see you then.
