:00:30. > :00:31.Right, let's get 2017 started in style, shall we?

:00:32. > :00:41.Lots of people queuing for photos of a sign.

:00:42. > :00:46.A motorcycle vest with built-in airbag?

:00:47. > :00:56.Every January, Las Vegas hosts the massive Consumer Electronics

:00:57. > :00:59.Show, and if you have a product to launch,

:01:00. > :01:10.And that's why I am being followed by a drone,

:01:11. > :01:15.specifically, the hover camera Passport drone.

:01:16. > :01:18.First one I have seen which follows you not by tracking a signal

:01:19. > :01:22.from your mobile phone, but instead by locking on to a face

:01:23. > :01:28.You can tell it which face to follow by tapping on it in the accompanying

:01:29. > :01:32.And the latest version will let you scan and upload your face

:01:33. > :01:37.to the drone so it can find and recognise you automatically.

:01:38. > :01:42.The theory is that you then don't need the phone at all.

:01:43. > :01:50.The drone knows and loves your face, just like a loyal puppy.

:01:51. > :01:53.And, with guarded blades and sensors underneath to help it steer clear

:01:54. > :01:58.of obstacles, it certainly seems safe and light enough to fly

:01:59. > :02:02.in amongst other people, or indeed to grab it out of the air

:02:03. > :02:12.Unbelievably, CES is now in its 50th year, and in that time it's got

:02:13. > :02:21.The show has spread beyond the walls of the Las Vegas Convention Centre

:02:22. > :02:24.to the surrounding hotels, and we have seen all sorts of ideas

:02:25. > :02:32.The event might have grown, but the technology,

:02:33. > :02:41.The TV screens have got so thin that they blend into the walls,

:02:42. > :02:56.so thin you can peel them on and off.

:02:57. > :03:04.And in amongst the major companies are a number of tiny companies. Marc

:03:05. > :03:10.has been checking some of them out. Most people understand that if I do

:03:11. > :03:14.this with my fingers it means However, if I am wearing this strap

:03:15. > :03:20.when I make that gesture my hand becomes part of the telephone itself

:03:21. > :03:23.and can send and receive calls. The strap has a little body

:03:24. > :03:26.conducting unit in here which sends vibrations down my hand

:03:27. > :03:29.and when I stick my finger in my ear, they become

:03:30. > :03:31.amplified sound. There is a microphone

:03:32. > :03:33.just in the strap there, The finished thing looks

:03:34. > :03:42.like a normal watch strap and can be Now, when you want to hang up,

:03:43. > :03:46.that's simplicity itself. All you've got to do

:03:47. > :03:49.is take your hand away Health is once again

:03:50. > :03:52.a big theme here at CES. And, whilst more people than ever

:03:53. > :03:55.are following gluten-free, dairy-free or other sorts

:03:56. > :03:57.of specialist diets, they don't necessarily need

:03:58. > :03:59.to be unless they've had And that's something that this

:04:00. > :04:03.device aims to overcome by helping people create the perfect diet

:04:04. > :04:06.for their own personal digestive Air connects via bluetooth,

:04:07. > :04:13.and its mission is to miniaturise a breath test that

:04:14. > :04:15.gastroenterologists have been It analyses reaction to various

:04:16. > :04:20.forms of carbohydrate, This is based on the idea that,

:04:21. > :04:31.if you consume a food that you can't break down, then it will ferment

:04:32. > :04:35.in the gut, and from that point chemicals will disperse

:04:36. > :04:40.into the bloodstream. That blood will be making its way

:04:41. > :04:43.into the lungs, and then when you breathe

:04:44. > :04:46.out you'll be able to analyse how So, once it learns what works

:04:47. > :04:50.for you, it should be able to help

:04:51. > :04:52.you customise your diet as the finished app's food database

:04:53. > :04:55.indicates how likely So, if you find the answer,

:04:56. > :05:02.all that's left to do is actually stick

:05:03. > :05:03.to the lifestyle This year's big theme

:05:04. > :05:13.at CES was cars. And, as always, it's often the most

:05:14. > :05:16.outrageous concepts that grab Rinspeed has previously proposed

:05:17. > :05:26.a car with its own deployable drone. Well, now it's got one that has

:05:27. > :05:29.a space-age cockpit, with more glass

:05:30. > :05:31.than a greenhouse, which is quite Yes, that's a garden

:05:32. > :05:36.in the dashboard. Well, so you get a nice smell

:05:37. > :05:39.when you're driving, of course, and you can

:05:40. > :05:42.even take part of it Don't forget to switch the fan on,

:05:43. > :05:48.so you get that lovely whiff. Actually, a lot of the more serious

:05:49. > :05:51.car stuff is happening in small steps, incrementally, so it's harder

:05:52. > :05:55.to grab the headlines. That said, Marc Cieslak has

:05:56. > :05:57.just been for a couple There's a certain German car-maker

:05:58. > :06:09.that boasts of building the ultimate But here at CES 2017,

:06:10. > :06:15.most of the motor manufacturers seem intent on building the ultimate

:06:16. > :06:21.self-driving machine. It isn't just motor manufacturers

:06:22. > :06:24.that are showing off They're doing it with the help

:06:25. > :06:31.of tech companies, as well. This vehicle is fitted

:06:32. > :06:35.with a system called BB8, which has been created by NVIDIA,

:06:36. > :06:38.a company most famous for manufacturing

:06:39. > :06:46.high-end graphics chips. Artificial intelligence software

:06:47. > :06:49.which learns helped by sensors have

:06:50. > :06:50.trained BB8 to be able Here, an obstacle has just

:06:51. > :06:54.appeared in the route that we were going to take to get

:06:55. > :07:01.to the other end of this track. The car has decided that they'd

:07:02. > :07:05.better not drive into that obstacle, so it's

:07:06. > :07:14.driven around it. Driving around a car park is one

:07:15. > :07:18.thing but how do these autonomous Electronic supplier Delphi has

:07:19. > :07:22.partnered with driver assistance and sensor outfit Mobileye

:07:23. > :07:24.and created a mini fleet of autonomous Audi SUVs

:07:25. > :07:26.which are driving around There are 24 different sensors

:07:27. > :07:30.spread out across the body of this car which allow it to drive

:07:31. > :07:33.autonomously and what I am struck by is that you don't

:07:34. > :07:36.notice any of them. You can't really see any

:07:37. > :07:38.of those sensory devices. This car is an indicator,

:07:39. > :07:42.if you like, of how autonomous vehicles will look in the future,

:07:43. > :07:45.which is pretty much like any car Those sensors include lidar, radar,

:07:46. > :07:52.and cameras all around the vehicle. Here, we can see what the car

:07:53. > :07:57.sees through them. Identifying other vehicles

:07:58. > :08:01.as well as pedestrians, and behaving accordingly,

:08:02. > :08:02.as it weaves So, I'm a rear passenger in the back

:08:03. > :08:08.of this self-driving car. And so far zero dramas,

:08:09. > :08:10.apart from looking forward and noticing

:08:11. > :08:12.that the driver doesn't have his hands

:08:13. > :08:14.on the steering wheel. I could be forgiven for thinking

:08:15. > :08:18.that I am actually being driven The thing is, we've been driving

:08:19. > :08:23.around in prototype self-driving How long is it going to be before

:08:24. > :08:28.cars like this are available There is quite a wide consensus

:08:29. > :08:36.among the industry that 2021 is the time where the technology

:08:37. > :08:39.will be ready, and after a number of years where society will start

:08:40. > :08:42.gaining confidence in this kind of technology, then society would be

:08:43. > :08:46.at the point where the driver can be With that 2021 goal in mind,

:08:47. > :08:57.Mobileye announced that, in partnership with BMW and Intel,

:08:58. > :09:00.it will be testing 40 and European roads in

:09:01. > :09:04.the second half of this year. Autonomous automobiles are most

:09:05. > :09:15.definitely on their way. Now, if you are someone who preferS

:09:16. > :09:18.the wind to be rushing through your hair, CES also

:09:19. > :09:21.offers plenty for riders This is surely the most fun

:09:22. > :09:33.you can have on a beach The Super 73 is an electric bike

:09:34. > :09:38.that can hold enough charge Its top speed is 27mph,

:09:39. > :09:43.which on Newport Beach is certainly Don't press on it just yet

:09:44. > :09:50.and you have the two The bike was funded via Kickstarter,

:09:51. > :10:09.where it raised almost $500,000, and now each bike is

:10:10. > :10:11.being carefully crafted We have every machine needed

:10:12. > :10:15.to create an entire bike. There's some days where we have got,

:10:16. > :10:19.you know, 30, 40 bikes being welded That's to ensure that

:10:20. > :10:22.everything is done properly, safely, and will hold

:10:23. > :10:25.up for a lifetime. The batteries in these things

:10:26. > :10:27.are getting more affordable, they're getting lighter,

:10:28. > :10:30.so it means at CES this year we're seeing a host of interesting

:10:31. > :10:35.ways to help us get around. Chinese company LeEco

:10:36. > :10:37.unveiled these bikes. They're powered by normal pedals,

:10:38. > :10:40.but they have the android mobile operating system built in so you can

:10:41. > :10:43.track your progress. And then there is things

:10:44. > :10:48.like the Movpack. This is a regular backpack,

:10:49. > :10:51.that with one movement you can turn it

:10:52. > :10:52.into an electric skateboard, that's actually easier to ride

:10:53. > :10:56.than a regular skateboard. But it's perhaps more futuristic

:10:57. > :10:59.ideas like this one from Honda that This concept car is more

:11:00. > :11:05.about having something that you don't necessarily own,

:11:06. > :11:09.but you kind of just call it up whenever you need a vehicle to pop

:11:10. > :11:12.to the shops or do some It will drive itself to you,

:11:13. > :11:18.pick you up, and when you are done with it you can just

:11:19. > :11:29.let it go itself. And we will have to stop Consumer

:11:30. > :11:34.Electronics Show coverage right there because this is the shortcut

:11:35. > :11:38.of Click. We are back in Vegas next week. In the meantime you can follow

:11:39. > :11:41.us on Twitter. Thank you very much for watching and we will see you

:11:42. > :11:45.soon.
