:00:25. > :00:30.We are about to put a whole new spin on the world of mobiles.
:00:31. > :00:33.We are at the Mobile World Congress in Barcelona -
:00:34. > :00:40.the big show devoted to phones, tablets and all things mobile.
:00:41. > :00:46.We're a bit behind schedule, but we're going to get there.
:00:47. > :00:48.Although, if we look a bit distracted, it is
:00:49. > :00:50.because we are preparing for a rather
:00:51. > :00:59.It is not that we are not interested in the floating displays,
:01:00. > :01:02.connected bus stops, flash cars, smart shoes,
:01:03. > :01:07.It is just that we are about to bash out something
:01:08. > :01:11.Last year, we filmed an entire programme in 360 degrees,
:01:12. > :01:16.allowing those watching in virtual reality to look around the fantastic
:01:17. > :01:18.locations simply by turning their heads or their phones
:01:19. > :01:30.You really feel like you have been teleported into the situation.
:01:31. > :01:36.Not only that, but these days, we also have the ability to stream
:01:37. > :01:43.So imagine that, the next time we send a robot to the moon,
:01:44. > :01:47.if it has a 360 camera on board, then we can all put on a pair
:01:48. > :01:50.of goggles and actually feel like we are there, too.
:01:51. > :01:54.And so that is what we are doing today, getting ready to go live
:01:55. > :02:01.Not to the moon, admittedly, but to a place that is still
:02:02. > :02:08.So here we are in the massive Mobile World Congress.
:02:09. > :02:10.Eight enormous halls of madness and noise,
:02:11. > :02:13.as everyone tries to launch their product with maximum
:02:14. > :02:17.But these days this event is not just about mobiles,
:02:18. > :02:27.Since you can use a phone as a VR headset, many companies have opted
:02:28. > :02:32.to up the excitement by strapping people in and hurling them about.
:02:33. > :02:35.Yes, folks, VR can be totally immersive, if you have your
:02:36. > :02:41.And I don't even want to think what kind of experience this
:02:42. > :02:49.But going live in 360 is less about the headset and more
:02:50. > :02:54.about the kind of camera equipment you can and cannot use.
:02:55. > :02:58.You are currently watching me through a Nokia Ozo,
:02:59. > :03:09.which is a professional 360 camera with a professional pricetag
:03:10. > :03:12.to boot - about 45,000 US dollars, or 40,000 euros.
:03:13. > :03:20.It has eight lenses all around the sphere, which means not only can
:03:21. > :03:23.you can see in all directions, but it can also shoot in 3-D
:03:24. > :03:26.because that combination of lenses allows it to process
:03:27. > :03:31.What is really weird is it has this enormous battery pack at the back,
:03:32. > :03:34.which you think would be in shot, but actually this thing has a blind
:03:35. > :03:39.And what they so is they just get that almost-360 view
:03:40. > :03:40.and stretch it around like that.
:03:41. > :03:43.Modern 360 cameras will stitch the scene together themselves
:03:44. > :03:45.in real time, automatically wrapping that weird,
:03:46. > :03:47.warped video into a sphere around your head,
:03:48. > :03:49.and that is what enables them to go live.
:03:50. > :03:53.Now, if you wanted to stream the full 360 view from the Ozo,
:03:54. > :03:56.you are going to need some extract kit.
:03:57. > :03:59.Two dedicated hardware boxes, and an internet upload speed
:04:00. > :04:06.And, at a trade show like this, we are not that lucky.
:04:07. > :04:10.I think we have to accept that it's early days.
:04:11. > :04:13.To get really high-quality, ideally stereoscopic video,
:04:14. > :04:17.so you really can look around and feel a sense of depth,
:04:18. > :04:22.and feel that you're there, is going to take a while.
:04:23. > :04:25.There are bandwidth problems, and just having the equipment that
:04:26. > :04:27.can transmit and that amount of data,
:04:28. > :04:40.the picture gets rendered according to exactly where you're looking.
:04:41. > :04:44.It's going to take a while to get it sorted, but we're starting there.
:04:45. > :04:47.We are going to be doing two lives in 360, testing two different
:04:48. > :04:51.cameras and this is no mean feat because as with last year's 360
:04:52. > :04:53.show, we are coming to this before the manufacturers have
:04:54. > :04:58.So, to get good pictures, good sound, and a decent bit
:04:59. > :05:00.of interaction with the audience, we are having to hack together
:05:01. > :05:03.various bits of kit, and hope no-one trips over
:05:04. > :05:06.My microphone goes into a transmitter, which goes
:05:07. > :05:13.into a receiver, which goes into a box, which plugs into another
:05:14. > :05:16.box, and then we've got, like, a half a mile of ethernet cable,
:05:17. > :05:19.which is going to a network access point, which is hidden
:05:20. > :05:24.The first 360 camera we are using is the Orah 4i -
:05:25. > :05:27.four lenses which between them can shoot the 360 video
:05:28. > :05:32.Although it is important to note that this is the resolution
:05:33. > :05:40.The viewer only sees a part of this as they look around the scene.
:05:41. > :05:56.At the moment, it's not showing us anything that we want.
:05:57. > :06:04.It's a bit blurry, but we're going to get better.
:06:05. > :06:08.It was our very first attempt, so things were bumpy on the run-up
:06:09. > :06:12.We were supposed to go like -15 minutes ago.
:06:13. > :06:17.That said, it seemed to hang together, and viewers on our YouTube
:06:18. > :06:21.360 channel got to find out a bit more about a car that's planning
:06:22. > :06:27.Yes, it has a gas turbine engine from the Typhoon Eurofighter.
:06:28. > :06:44.The gas turbine is for your below 800mph manoeuvres and then
:06:45. > :06:49.the rockets fire you up, give you the kick to over a thousand.
:06:50. > :06:55.Now, streaming such a high-quality picture takes a lot of data,
:06:56. > :06:57.hence we had to use a fat, wired internet
:06:58. > :07:00.connection of about 10 megabits per second.
:07:01. > :07:02.But, for our second attempt, we went commando.
:07:03. > :07:06.The Ricoh Theta S is the camera we used to shoot the 360 helicopter
:07:07. > :07:14.It is a small hand-held stick with two fish-eye lenses.
:07:15. > :07:18.Its full view is only 2K, the same as a normal high-def
:07:19. > :07:21.picture, so the part you see in virtual reality is much lower
:07:22. > :07:24.resolution but that does means it is possible to stream the video
:07:25. > :07:27.live over the mobile network, which is what we did,
:07:28. > :07:32.To give them a taste of what it is like to be so close
:07:33. > :07:44.Very soon, Ricoh is releasing the Theta R which has a few
:07:45. > :07:49.upgrades, including more connectors, expandable storage, and it
:07:50. > :07:51.will do the stitching in the camera itself,
:07:52. > :07:55.rather than needing a computer to do all the grunt work.
:07:56. > :07:59.For now, though, we were pretty happy with our little experiment,
:08:00. > :08:02.and very soon there will almost certainly be more
:08:03. > :08:06.fully integrated kits, to let us go live in 360 with much less bother.
:08:07. > :08:09.When we went to up a glacier and to the Large Hadron Collider
:08:10. > :08:12.to film those in 360, we used six GoPros strapped together
:08:13. > :08:17.We then had to stitch that footage together manually,
:08:18. > :08:24.using a powerful computer and software, and many, many hours.
:08:25. > :08:26.Well, since then, GoPro has released the Omni,
:08:27. > :08:29.which is a case in which six GoPros fit.
:08:30. > :08:31.It has one remote start for all six cameras,
:08:32. > :08:34.which is good, and it also comes with a box that does
:08:35. > :08:41.And in a couple of months' time, GoPro says it is going to release
:08:42. > :08:43.an update which allows you to do that live.
:08:44. > :08:46.And, if you want to create your own 360 videas,
:08:47. > :08:49.this tiny camera by LiFi plugs into your Android phone.
:08:50. > :08:51.The videos are not live, but the stitching is quick,
:08:52. > :09:04.and you can share it easily on your social networks.
:09:05. > :09:07.Right, what else is hot at this year's MWC?
:09:08. > :09:09.Here's Stephen Beckett with a round-up.
:09:10. > :09:12.Incredibly, at a convention with some of the world's biggest
:09:13. > :09:14.phone manufacturers hawking their newest and shiniest devices,
:09:15. > :09:17.this is the phone that everyone is talking about.
:09:18. > :09:19.Finnish start-up HMD Global has resurrected a scintillating piece
:09:20. > :09:22.of nostalgia, with a reboot of its Nokia 3310.
:09:23. > :09:27.HMD licensed the Nokia phone brand at the end of 2016.
:09:28. > :09:35.The close to indestructible handset, with a seemingly infinite battery
:09:36. > :09:38.life, has been given a new lease of life,
:09:39. > :09:40.with modern curves, jazzy colours and, of course,
:09:41. > :09:44.BlackBerry has also gone back to basics with a new flagship phone
:09:45. > :09:48.It has a physical gesture sensitive keyboard that hides a fingerprint
:09:49. > :09:53.And that is not the only slice of nostalgia here at NWC.
:09:54. > :09:56.Samsung is getting in on the action, too, with this classic Norris
:09:57. > :09:58.pencil, although I would not
:09:59. > :10:02.sharpen this particular one because there is quite a lot
:10:03. > :10:04.of digital stuff in the end, to allow
:10:05. > :10:08.Google would much rather you talk to your devices though,
:10:09. > :10:12.It has announced its personal assistant, Google Home,
:10:13. > :10:14.will finally be available for sale outside of the US,
:10:15. > :10:16.and by May, in the UK.
:10:17. > :10:19.And, in another new attempt to dominate the AI market,
:10:20. > :10:22.the company also said it will roll out its voice-activated digital
:10:23. > :10:24.assistant to all android phones running Marshmallow and Nougat.
:10:25. > :10:27.Until now, it has only been available on Goggle's own Pixel
:10:28. > :10:30.That is, apart from Huawai and Lenovo mobiles.
:10:31. > :10:34.Those are set to use Amazon's Alexa instead.
:10:35. > :10:37.Lenovo's upcoming Moto Z will get its assistance smarts
:10:38. > :10:41.through a snap-on back, which they're calling a moto mod.
:10:42. > :10:43.Others, though, are ditching customisation.
:10:44. > :10:46.LG launched its new flagship G6 phone without the modular capability
:10:47. > :10:56.The company say its customers do not fancy forking out for extra parts.
:10:57. > :11:01.The LG G6 also knocks the traditional aspect ratio oyt
:11:02. > :11:05.of the park - the screen is 18x9 - twice as tall as wide.
:11:06. > :11:10.Smartphones have traditionally been 16x9.
:11:11. > :11:21.And that is it for the shortcut of click at NWC in Barcelona. A full
:11:22. > :11:25.version is available online now. And let us know what you think of our
:11:26. > :11:31.attempt at a 360 degrees episode. To be kind. Thank you for watching, see
:11:32. > :11:33.you soon.
