:01:17. > :01:25.Welcome to Click. I'm Spencer Kelly. The car industry is not shy of
:01:25. > :01:31.technology. Bodies are designed and aerodynamic tweaks using super
:01:31. > :01:34.technology. Even this show ring is fully digital. Over the last few
:01:34. > :01:39.years, more technology has been applied to the problem of the
:01:39. > :01:43.missions and dependency on fossil fuels. This man lives and works in
:01:43. > :01:47.LA which used to be Smog Central and he has found that even though
:01:47. > :01:55.the streets are still full of gas- guzzlers, the city has spawned a
:01:56. > :01:59.number of hybrid roadsters and even the odd new car company.
:01:59. > :02:05.As a red-blooded American male, it is like constitutional right or
:02:05. > :02:09.duty to drive the biggest, fastest and sexiest car on the road. But I
:02:09. > :02:19.also live in southern California where being eco-friendly is a way

:02:38. > :02:43.a totally unique hybrid mechanism. To understand this to the car, it
:02:43. > :02:48.helps to understand the man. And why BMW's former top designer
:02:48. > :02:53.believes the world is ready for his company. There is a whole new
:02:53. > :02:57.generation of people that truly feel like, I want a different type
:02:57. > :03:03.of vehicle to project to I am and what I believe in. And that is what
:03:03. > :03:07.we are trying to create. It's a whole lifestyle brand. You can
:03:07. > :03:11.drive and environmentally friendly car but it can look cool and the
:03:11. > :03:17.fast and fun. Most new cars are first created with a visual style
:03:17. > :03:22.in mind. That style evolves and changes as the car becomes a model.
:03:22. > :03:28.To accommodate the mechanics. But not so with this one where design
:03:28. > :03:32.is key. Henrik Fisker grinned up the perfect automobile and told the
:03:32. > :03:37.engineers to make it work. The result is an American car that is
:03:37. > :03:43.as visually stunning as any European exotic. That is because
:03:43. > :03:47.the car is designed by a top-notch car designer. Mr Fisker is an
:03:47. > :03:50.expert. He is one of the best in the world and it shows up in the

:03:57. > :04:03.attitude and perspective is, when the Carmen mac goes down the street,

:04:21. > :04:27.speed of 125mph. And is the route to 60 in under six seconds. Not bad
:04:27. > :04:32.for a hybrid. But forget numbers. How does he drive? In the name of
:04:32. > :04:36.journalism, I had to verify this claims. Off I went in search of
:04:36. > :04:44.wide open roads, promising that my insurance was up-to-date and that
:04:44. > :04:49.that would take better care of the car or than the camera. Yes... When
:04:49. > :04:53.you get in the karma, if you did not know that it was an electric
:04:53. > :05:00.car, you probably would not know without driving, especially when
:05:00. > :05:03.the engine is on. You get that motor noise you are used to. That
:05:03. > :05:08.separates it from a lot of the environmentally friendly
:05:08. > :05:14.competition, which asks drivers to sacrifice sporty feel for saving
:05:14. > :05:19.the world, because going faster takes energy. Lots of it. That is
:05:19. > :05:21.what all electric and hybrid cars are trying to conserve. But the
:05:22. > :05:27.fiasco has been engineered differently from any other hybrid.
:05:27. > :05:32.You get to choose which mode you driving. Electric, stealth mode or
:05:32. > :05:36.sports mode, using gas. You can choose between the two using this
:05:36. > :05:42.panel on the side of the steering wheel. Uniquely, the driver has
:05:42. > :05:47.control over the road. It has a range Extender. In stealth mode,
:05:47. > :05:52.the battery provides power to the wheels and is good for about 50
:05:53. > :05:56.miles. When it is out of Jews or the driver switches to sports mode,
:05:56. > :06:00.the four cylinder kicks in. But instead of driving the wheels
:06:00. > :06:04.directly like every other car on the road, the petrol engine acts as
:06:04. > :06:09.a generator, recharging the batteries and powering the rear
:06:09. > :06:15.wheels. The benefits? Sports car- like performance. But the trade-off
:06:15. > :06:19.is that the engine only gets 20 miles per gallon. Not exactly world
:06:19. > :06:24.class for a hybrid. If you have an engine running a generator, that
:06:24. > :06:29.electricity is eight change of form of the energy that has to go
:06:29. > :06:33.somewhere else and then go to the road or battery. There are losses
:06:33. > :06:39.in the entire process and that is why the car is getting 20 miles per
:06:39. > :06:42.gallon, as a gas car. That is a disappointing number. If the car is
:06:42. > :06:46.far as the more efficient in all- electric mode and the fiscal wants
:06:46. > :06:54.to be seen as a truly progressive company, it begs the question, why
:06:54. > :06:58.not ditch the motor altogether? Even today, with the lithium ion
:06:58. > :07:02.batteries, there is a limit to how far you can go. They have to say,
:07:02. > :07:07.how much will people really drive every day? The average commuter is
:07:07. > :07:12.a lot less than 50 miles. If you can put a battery in that is about
:07:12. > :07:16.40-50 range and that you can charge overnight but then you have a range
:07:16. > :07:20.extend or so that when you really want to go far, you can still get
:07:20. > :07:25.to work. Despite the sporty looks and performance, it is working hard
:07:25. > :07:29.to sell that it go from the image. With leather free interiors, a
:07:29. > :07:33.solar panel on the roof for a bit of extra power. Even a touch screen
:07:33. > :07:37.to let you know how all of that energy is officially being used.
:07:37. > :07:43.But that trade-off means you don't have the true leather-bound luxury
:07:43. > :07:49.we are used to seeing in other cars sporting a $100,000 price tag. It
:07:49. > :07:53.seems this green variety does not come cheap. And that could be what
:07:53. > :07:58.-- one of the biggest obstacles. The market for a big-budget hybrid
:07:58. > :08:02.is only so big at the moment. There is already stiff competition from
:08:02. > :08:07.well-established hybrids like the Toyota clears and more recently
:08:07. > :08:13.from Tesla, another 21st century start-up which, only a few years
:08:13. > :08:16.ago, was itself redefining the market with its super cool of all
:08:16. > :08:25.electric road stir and which just started delivering its new model,
:08:25. > :08:32.the cheaper form a successor. But it is not just its competitors it
:08:32. > :08:36.is fighting. It is also fires. This one in California have happened in
:08:36. > :08:40.early August and another one in Texas back in May that
:08:40. > :08:46.investigators say started inside the car and spread to its owner's
:08:46. > :08:49.home, causing $100,000 in damage. They are still investigating the
:08:49. > :08:52.cause of this devastation but released a public statement on the
:08:52. > :08:57.latest blaze, saying that independent investigators concluded
:08:57. > :09:01.the cause of the fire was not the battery or engine components but
:09:01. > :09:06.instead a faulty fan provided by an outside supplier. As a result, the
:09:07. > :09:13.company has announced a full recall of the Carmen mac in an effort to
:09:13. > :09:17.keep them fire free. -- the calmer. Assuming they can allay fears over
:09:17. > :09:21.the fires, the company is already looking ahead to its next model.
:09:21. > :09:26.The Atlantic. It will benefit from lessons learned and come with a

:09:36. > :09:39.
