:01:39. > :01:43.but these days apps and software used by we mere mortals are using
:01:43. > :01:48.more and more of this metadata. It could be time to give it a little
:01:48. > :01:52.bit of respect as Ian Hardy explains in New York. Turnover your
:01:52. > :01:58.photos from decades long gone and you might find scribblings on the
:01:58. > :02:03.back. Who? What? When? Where? That was your grandfather's version of
:02:03. > :02:07.metadata. But today's digital photo filed not only collects all the
:02:07. > :02:11.technical information, but allows shooters to add many personal
:02:11. > :02:17.details as well. Metadata or software used to be a pros only
:02:17. > :02:22.world, but the Giants, Lightroom and aperture, have both dropped
:02:22. > :02:26.their prices dramatically. And Linn has emerged of ring the ability for
:02:26. > :02:33.anyone to add captions, key words, and other metadata quickly and
:02:33. > :02:38.efficiently. But photographers in the 21st century, like Alan Shapiro,
:02:38. > :02:42.face another problem. They need to insure the metadata, which can

:02:45. > :02:49.photographed wherever it goes online. Traditionally that has been
:02:49. > :02:54.tricky. Metadata is important to anyone, whether you're a
:02:54. > :02:59.professional or amateur, anyone who wants to share their photograph, be
:02:59. > :03:03.it with family... I have had family come for family reunions and some
:03:03. > :03:08.of them want photos, I just send them to my SmugMug website, I don't
:03:08. > :03:13.sell to them, I could, but I don't, because I like them. They can
:03:13. > :03:17.download and all of the data I have added to my photo travels with it.
:03:17. > :03:20.SmugMug has become popular with photographers because it was one of
:03:20. > :03:25.the first to acknowledge the importance of metadata and leave it
:03:25. > :03:29.intact throughout the import, storage, export and distribution
:03:29. > :03:35.process. Some websites strip it without warning to say bandwidth
:03:35. > :03:40.costs. But creating metadata or with photographs can be a tedious
:03:40. > :03:45.and time-consuming project. Photosmith 3 is a tablet app that
:03:45. > :03:49.sinks with Lightroom and catalogues on ago. The first two versions
:03:49. > :03:53.released by part-time developers that started it as a hobby got
:03:53. > :03:58.mixed reviews primarily because of an Apple's ioS restrictions, but
:03:58. > :04:03.this version will finely and chain photographers from their desktops

:04:43. > :04:48.added to the file. Photographic metadata has become very important
:04:48. > :04:52.for a whole new genre of apps. Paul Mayne is the inventor of the
:04:52. > :04:56.incredibly simple Day One. One way of recording your thoughts is to
:04:56. > :05:00.open the app whenever something happens and start typing. The entry
:05:00. > :05:04.created will be time, date and location sensitive. But if it is
:05:05. > :05:09.not convenient to stop and type you can simply take a photo with your
:05:09. > :05:13.device and wait until later when the image metadata becomes
:05:13. > :05:18.invaluable to the app. You add that photo to the entry, it immediately
:05:18. > :05:22.prompts you, would you like to change the entry to this photos day
:05:22. > :05:26.and this location? At that moment it all grab the weather, up to 30
:05:26. > :05:30.days back. From there you can expand and start writing about who
:05:30. > :05:37.you were with and what you were doing, what you ate, things like
:05:37. > :05:40.that. Everpix is another kind of record keeping apps with the
:05:40. > :05:45.ambitious goal of finding the meaning within your photographs. It
:05:45. > :05:49.sucks up your collection and repackage his it, having analysed
:05:49. > :05:54.metadata and semantic information. Algorithms look at the pixels and
:05:54. > :05:57.try to work out what is actually happening in the picture. It then
:05:57. > :06:02.displays one or two great shots of each event which hopefully triggers
:06:02. > :06:08.more memories for the viewer, who can then start digging down in more
:06:08. > :06:13.detailed. Collections are massive. There's a lot of photos. For, light,
:06:13. > :06:17.users, they end up being, like, last under an avalanche of data
:06:17. > :06:22.which paradoxically becomes like a noise. You take a lot, you want to
:06:22. > :06:26.remember a lot, you want to take with you a lot, and then, you know,
:06:26. > :06:31.in two or three days it is just noise, you lose it. Despite the
:06:31. > :06:34.enormous upside of keeping metadata intact There's also the flipside to
:06:35. > :06:39.consider. Loading photos on to your favourite social media website
:06:39. > :06:45.without stripping personal information out just the host and
:06:45. > :06:49.potentially the world a whole new sense of who you are, where you are
