:00:00. > :00:00.Now one BBC News, it's time for Click.

:00:00. > :00:44.There was a time when a launch meant a launch.

:00:45. > :00:52.It was something big, something special,

:00:53. > :00:59.Something could go into orbit, or go up in

:01:00. > :01:13.These days, launches also look like this.

:01:14. > :01:14.This week in September, the

:01:15. > :01:22.Apple is fuelling the good ship iPhone.

:01:23. > :01:25.Sony has started the PlayStation countdown.

:01:26. > :01:27.And everyone else has been over at EFA launching

:01:28. > :01:36.Or is everyone just having a launch because they

:01:37. > :01:46.And if you can't get to space, these days,

:01:47. > :02:06.It's whistling past Uranus and on to Neptune.

:02:07. > :02:08.Yes, I got my hands on the first device to use

:02:09. > :02:11.Google's Project Tango, something we saw a few years ago.

:02:12. > :02:14.It is a 3-D sensing system that can learn about

:02:15. > :02:34.twin cameras to determine and remember the distance to

:02:35. > :02:37.And that should lead to a more intelligent augmented

:02:38. > :02:39.reality experience, which means you won't just be playing

:02:40. > :02:41.gimmicky games any more, you will be able to do

:02:42. > :02:45.sensible things, too, like furniture office.

:02:46. > :02:47.sensible things, too, like furnish your office.

:02:48. > :02:55.spruce up and you can drop in a new stool or two.

:02:56. > :02:57.This isn't the first interior design application

:02:58. > :03:00.that I've seen, but its depth perception should make this kind of

:03:01. > :03:04.And if you want to rip up the room and start again,

:03:05. > :03:05.there is this rather finicky tape measure

:03:06. > :03:08.limitations of those sensors at the moment.

:03:09. > :03:11.However, on the few occasions we have got it to work

:03:12. > :03:14.properly, I can confirm, 1.5 metres, that it is right, which is better

:03:15. > :03:19.That is the smart furniture sorted, so now all we need is a smart home

:03:20. > :03:33.Over to Jen Copestake at Europe's largest tech

:03:34. > :03:36.There are many new Smart home technology concepts launched at

:03:37. > :03:40.Over the past two years, we've heard a lot about the internet of

:03:41. > :03:46.things and making our products more intelligent.

:03:47. > :03:49.The halls here in Berlin were dominated by ideas to

:03:50. > :03:52.From refrigerators growing herbs to quick

:03:53. > :03:54.drying hair extensions, and of course, the connected iron.

:03:55. > :03:55.For ?1500, you can get this connected

:03:56. > :03:59.You may ask why you need it, but it is quite useful.

:04:00. > :04:02.You can teach yourself how to iron through the application by making

:04:03. > :04:08.There aren't any sensors in this cover but you

:04:09. > :04:11.have folding lines so you can perfect your technique with kids'

:04:12. > :04:14.clothes or men's shirts, and there is a fan in here that keeps

:04:15. > :04:22.Connected kitchen concepts are everywhere here,

:04:23. > :04:24.including this rather impressive display from Panasonic.

:04:25. > :04:25.The technology is really in the background.

:04:26. > :04:26.The comfort and ease of

:04:27. > :04:50.This includes a sake a fridge that not

:04:51. > :04:52.only maintains perfect temperature and humidity of each bottle but

:04:53. > :04:55.recommends recipes to go with your drinks and is connected to sensors

:04:56. > :04:58.in the fridge that keeps an eye on when your ingredients are running

:04:59. > :05:01.low and orders them from an online shop for you.

:05:02. > :05:03.All this data is passed on to a very clever hob

:05:04. > :05:06.which starts heating up to the right temperature to cook your selection.

:05:07. > :05:09.The induction heaters extend to your table so you can keep

:05:10. > :05:12.When you've finished cooking, you can relax and watch

:05:13. > :05:15.television on a transparent glass door in your cupboard and receive a

:05:16. > :05:17.notification that your laundry has been folded by the robot next.

:05:18. > :05:20.notification that your laundry has been folded by the robot next door.

:05:21. > :05:22.Slightly more practical than a laundry robot,

:05:23. > :05:24.a Chinese company has made a washing machine that features

:05:25. > :05:27.two drums and an application to control them when you're away from

:05:28. > :05:31.The question is, how many people are actually using any of

:05:32. > :05:34.There is a strong technological push right now,

:05:35. > :05:38.Consumer pull in Europe is slow at this time.

:05:39. > :05:41.I'm sure it will grow and our brand will

:05:42. > :05:51.Robots have been integrated into smart concepts, too.

:05:52. > :05:54.These cuties are called sandbots and are similar to the robots we saw

:05:55. > :06:02.serving food in China earlier this year.

:06:03. > :06:05.They are designed to do a wider variety of jobs, including health

:06:06. > :06:09.People sometimes say I'm too tubby to be a security guard will stop

:06:10. > :06:13.This robot has sensors all over its body

:06:14. > :06:15.and will chat to you when you

:06:16. > :06:17.touch it, and do a dance on

:06:18. > :06:23.But the cutest home robot I've seen yet is Sony's concept

:06:24. > :06:27.Complete with a screen in his tummy, he made me a

:06:28. > :06:39.coffee and played me a song afterwards.

:06:40. > :06:42.Amazon's Smart Speaker, the Echo, and represents Sony's plans to

:06:43. > :06:44.expand into intelligent robots that can develop an emotional connection

:06:45. > :06:47.This can be expanded into manufacturing facilities,

:06:48. > :06:48.logistics, for example, elderly health care.

:06:49. > :06:52.And so, we will start small with things like a home

:06:53. > :06:55.robot, but there is so much more in terms of applications of the

:06:56. > :06:58.We will cover those areas in a big way.

:06:59. > :07:03.Putting those technologies to the test, Panasonic

:07:04. > :07:05.announce a future smart city project right here in Berlin.

:07:06. > :07:08.By 2018, 69 flats will host families selected to

:07:09. > :07:11.They will test facial recognition and artificial intelligence

:07:12. > :07:14.platforms to assist elderly residents.

:07:15. > :07:17.It will be powered by hydrogen fuel cells and solar

:07:18. > :07:18.panels, have electric cars and collective

:07:19. > :07:19.decision-making by the

:07:20. > :07:22.tenants on areas of technology to develop.

:07:23. > :07:28.This could bring smarter and more connected ways of living

:07:29. > :07:34.for all of us before the next decade.

:07:35. > :07:36.Hello, and welcome to the

:07:37. > :07:45.Whilst Apple, Sony and others seem to have been screaming

:07:46. > :07:48.from the rooftops this week about their launches, it seems the

:07:49. > :07:59.After cancelling orders for the Note 7 due to a small number of devices

:08:00. > :08:01.exploding after charging, UK users were told

:08:02. > :08:02.they would be in line for

:08:03. > :08:06.Google scrapped plans for its customisable on the go modular

:08:07. > :08:16.And in a whose side are you on twist, Warner Brothers

:08:17. > :08:19.inadvertently requested its own website be taken out of Google

:08:20. > :08:21.search, suggesting it was in breach of copyright.

:08:22. > :08:30.Thanks, hopefully my furniture and books

:08:31. > :08:33.will arrive, too, as Amazon are taking on competitors, bringing food

:08:34. > :08:36.Amazon and restaurants will be for prime users

:08:37. > :08:38.Oh, it's only available in some postcodes.

:08:39. > :08:41.And finally, a Pokemon go play in Russia could face

:08:42. > :08:43.up to five years in jail after filming

:08:44. > :08:44.himself playing a game in

:08:45. > :08:47.He is reportedly being held in prison, charged with mockery

:08:48. > :08:49.of religious beliefs while he awaits trial.

:08:50. > :08:51.He is appealing against the

:08:52. > :09:11.Now, if you want to hurtle into no man's sky on a video games console,

:09:12. > :09:19.But will it be the current PS4 or the new one?

:09:20. > :09:32.Here is Mark with full launch coverage.

:09:33. > :09:34.PlayStation head honcho Andrew House didn't waste any

:09:35. > :09:37.time announcing the worst kept secret in games at this week's Sony

:09:38. > :09:50.system that is slimmer, lighter and more energy-efficient.

:09:51. > :09:52.Bizarrely, there have been reports online that

:09:53. > :09:59.PlayStation 4 Slim is being made available for sale on eBay weeks

:10:00. > :10:05.before the console was even officially announced.

:10:06. > :10:14.Weird distribution issues aside, the Slim

:10:15. > :10:16.is just that - a PS4 that's been on a diet.

:10:17. > :10:18.It shares the same specification as the current

:10:19. > :10:22.The big news was saved for the announcement of the console

:10:23. > :10:27.previously known as PlayStation Neo, but now dubbed...

:10:28. > :10:35.A more powerful version of the games console with a one TB hard

:10:36. > :10:45.drive and upgraded hardware which supports improved graphics when used

:10:46. > :11:02.Weirdly, it doesn't have a UHD Blu-ray player.

:11:03. > :11:05.While the improved graphics and big upgrade in resolution from the ten

:11:06. > :11:06.80p high definition is currently created

:11:07. > :11:08.by the current machine, the

:11:09. > :11:10.new console has extra brightness and improved contrast.

:11:11. > :11:11.Games such as Horizon zero Dawn were demoed

:11:12. > :11:13.showing off the machine's improved graphics.

:11:14. > :11:15.Sony also suggested the existing PS four games could be

:11:16. > :11:17.reworked to produce the higher resolution

:11:18. > :11:18.images that the probe is

:11:19. > :11:22.The Pro also has extra processing grunt which will be used

:11:23. > :11:23.to improve the visuals on the PlayStation

:11:24. > :11:29.also but is this two-tier console ecosystem a good thing for gamers?

:11:30. > :11:32.It means there is a lower price console for those people who

:11:33. > :11:39.couldn't afford to buy the higher specification.

:11:40. > :11:42.At the same time, it is obvious there is a better model

:11:43. > :11:45.out there, and anybody who has the lower spec model will probably

:11:46. > :12:06.Sony is not alone in the new console arena.

:12:07. > :12:09.Nintendo has a new machine waiting in the wings, dubbed the NX.

:12:10. > :12:12.There is not much that has been confirmed about it, but we know that

:12:13. > :12:15.technically it will be less powerful than its rivals.

:12:16. > :12:17.Microsoft already has its Xbox one Slim, which also

:12:18. > :12:19.supports HDR and streaming for K video, plus an ultra-HD Blu-ray

:12:20. > :12:23.It also has its own hard-core piece of upgraded hardware

:12:24. > :12:47.in the works, called Project Scorpio.

:12:48. > :12:50.Microsoft has an advantage, having brought out the Xbox One S with

:12:51. > :12:51.the ultra-HD Blu-ray player, which makes it

:12:52. > :12:56.They have the chance to see what Sony is going to do, to get

:12:57. > :12:59.the PlayStation for pro, pull it apart, see what is inside and make

:13:00. > :13:01.sure they can better it with the console

:13:02. > :13:02.that comes out towards the

:13:03. > :13:05.For now, Sony's fired the first shot in the latest

:13:06. > :13:08.The console launches on the 10th of November.

:13:09. > :13:12.But sometimes we really do want to see the detail,

:13:13. > :13:14.and although our eyes can manage it, our cameras can't cope

:13:15. > :13:17.with the difference between a really bright background and a foreground

:13:18. > :13:20.Which means you can only expose for one or the other.

:13:21. > :13:22.Personally, I would prefer the background.

:13:23. > :13:25.And it is only this year that a decent range of TV sets

:13:26. > :13:30.It is called high dynamic range, or HDR, and it will show a greater

:13:31. > :13:34.range of brightness from content filmed on new HDR cameras.

:13:35. > :13:36.Now, different systems do it in different ways,

:13:37. > :13:40.but one way of achieving it is to capture each frame of video

:13:41. > :13:42.more than once, with different exposures, so that you can see

:13:43. > :13:46.the detail in the bright bits and the dark bits at the same time,

:13:47. > :13:51.something made abundantly clear by this Nasa project,

:13:52. > :13:55.which turned an ordinarily overexposed rocket burn into a thing

:13:56. > :14:05.Well, don't know about you, but I am ready for another launch

:14:06. > :14:08.now, so let's head back to IFA, to see which next-gen TVs have

:14:09. > :14:13.We have seen a lot of innovation in television over the years

:14:14. > :14:24.In fact, it has been 50 years since LG created its first television.

:14:25. > :14:26.To celebrate, here at IFA they have put together this

:14:27. > :14:30.It is made of 216 55-inch curved TVs.

:14:31. > :14:34.There are almost 500 million pixels on display here.

:14:35. > :14:37.But it is not the amount of pixels that have caught our attention this

:14:38. > :14:41.High-definition televisions create more contrast,

:14:42. > :14:43.with brighter whites and more details in the shadows,

:14:44. > :14:50.TVs classified as HDR have to meet the standard of brightness.

:14:51. > :14:53.This is measured in something called nits.

:14:54. > :14:59.It measures the intensity of visible light.

:15:00. > :15:02.There are two kinds of HDR television we have looked at,

:15:03. > :15:06.ones with dots or ones with Oled displays.

:15:07. > :15:15.We went behind the scenes to see the quantum dot technology.

:15:16. > :15:22.That's right, they are so small we have to put them into liquid,

:15:23. > :15:31.When the light hits the layout, we can see the different sizes that

:15:32. > :15:43.Quantum-dot TVs are essentially a new type of LED-backlit LCD TV.

:15:44. > :15:45.But there is less light wasted in the new sets,

:15:46. > :15:50.To demonstrate, Jose measured the purity,

:15:51. > :15:55.A spike in the reading shows the colour purity.

:15:56. > :15:57.These Samsung TVs are capable of achieving over 1,000

:15:58. > :16:06.In comparison, a regular LCD TV can achieve about 100.

:16:07. > :16:09.In comparison, a regular LCD TV can achieve about 400.

:16:10. > :16:11.Heading across the conference floor, Panasonic is backing

:16:12. > :16:16.These TVs can't yet produce the same levels of brightness as the quantum

:16:17. > :16:18.dots, but they don't have a backlight, so each pixel

:16:19. > :16:21.on the TV can be turned off, leading to darker blacks.

:16:22. > :16:26.The key with Oled is they can create perfect black.

:16:27. > :16:29.And what Panasonic have worked on a lot is taking that panel,

:16:30. > :16:31.which can create perfect black, and using our advanced processing

:16:32. > :16:36.to be able to show the shades of grey just above black.

:16:37. > :16:39.So you are not having just blocks of black on the screen,

:16:40. > :16:42.you are seeing detail in that black area.

:16:43. > :16:51.Our whole Panasonic ethos is "as the director intended."

:16:52. > :16:54.So we actually have here in this display, we've got a reference

:16:55. > :16:57.monitor, a reference Oled monitor, the kind that is used on film sets,

:16:58. > :17:02.and what we are trying to do is reproduce that on our screen.

:17:03. > :17:06.So I would say Oled is better for when you sort of pull

:17:07. > :17:09.the curtains, watching a movie at night, whereas LED is great

:17:10. > :17:11.for bright rooms, perhaps lots of people watching the football

:17:12. > :17:16.But they have both got their place, I think.

:17:17. > :17:19.There is another thing to think about when choosing a HDR TV.

:17:20. > :17:21.There are two standards for providing HDR content.

:17:22. > :17:25.One is called HDR-10, it is open-source, used by most TV

:17:26. > :17:31.companies, and the other is Dolby Vision.

:17:32. > :17:34.With more data, it is available in more colours, but it is not

:17:35. > :17:45.LG is one company that has it for both formats.

:17:46. > :17:48.If you go and see the other companies, they improve the same

:17:49. > :17:52.It is not really fixed at this moment, some people are using HDR

:17:53. > :17:55.Dolby Vision, so no-one really knows what is going to be the standout

:17:56. > :18:05.So it is good to have both for their TV, for future-proof.

:18:06. > :18:07.And, if all that wasn't enough to think about,

:18:08. > :18:10.the BBC and NHK have approved a new standard called

:18:11. > :18:19.Hybrid Log-Gamma, compatible with both HDR sets.

:18:20. > :18:38.Have you ever rushed for the car and driven off,

:18:39. > :18:40.only to later realise that you've forgotten something important,

:18:41. > :18:44.Well, if you are that type of person, you may be familiar

:18:45. > :18:48.These are little tags that you can attach to your valuables,

:18:49. > :18:49.and they talk with Bluetooth to your smartphone.

:18:50. > :18:53.And if you leave something behind, and the distance gets too great,

:18:54. > :19:01.You connect your phone to the car, and up on the screen comes a list

:19:02. > :19:05.of all the items that you should have with you.

:19:06. > :19:07.And I know I have got my umbrella, for example,

:19:08. > :19:14.If I want to find my keys in the car, just press

:19:15. > :19:21.Now I don't remember bringing my wallet with me,

:19:22. > :19:24.so hopefully that is here in the car.

:19:25. > :19:34.There is the tag, inside a wallet which needs some

:19:35. > :19:43.I promise I will do that this summer.

:19:44. > :19:46.Annoyingly, the thing I have forgotten is my rucksack.

:19:47. > :19:50.It does, however, give me a map showing where it was last seen,

:19:51. > :19:53.which was just across the way, through the deluge.

:19:54. > :20:04.Once more into the breach, dear friends.

:20:05. > :20:08.Right, launch time again, and arguably no-one does launches

:20:09. > :20:15.Apple's events create more hype than any other,

:20:16. > :20:18.and these were the scenes on Wednesday, as the iPhone 7

:20:19. > :20:26.It is now waterproof, it has stereo speakers,

:20:27. > :20:28.and the larger version now has two cameras,

:20:29. > :20:32.a wide-angle and a telephoto, which means you can choose your shot

:20:33. > :20:37.size without losing quality by using a digital zoom.

:20:38. > :20:42.But by far the biggest impact was made by the removal

:20:43. > :20:44.of the headphone port, something that has been a standard

:20:45. > :20:51.Your choices now are buying new headphones that use

:20:52. > :20:57.Apple's Lightning connector, buying new, rechargeable wireless

:20:58. > :20:59.headphones, like these new EarPods, for ?159 -

:21:00. > :21:06.Or using your current headphones and this adaptor.

:21:07. > :21:14.Oh, and the Apple Watches now are water resistant,

:21:15. > :21:17.and will tell you if there are years Pokemon nearby.

:21:18. > :21:20.Dave Lee is our man in San Fran, and he was at the launch.

:21:21. > :21:24.You have had a couple of days to ruminate on Apple's announcement.

:21:25. > :21:28.Well, we didn't think it was going to be a massive,

:21:29. > :21:29.massive improvement on last year's iPhone,

:21:30. > :21:34.Incremental improvements, not a huge year in the history

:21:35. > :21:39.But I think people, as ever, were impressed with what Apple has

:21:40. > :21:42.OK, so the big talking point is the removal

:21:43. > :21:48.So do you think, when you open your iPhone 7 box, you are going to get

:21:49. > :21:50.a nice pair of iPhone 7-compatible headphones in there?

:21:51. > :21:54.Well, you are not going to get the wireless ones, I can tell

:21:55. > :22:00.They are $159 if you want the new cool, wireless EarPods,

:22:01. > :22:03.as they are called, but you will get an adaptor.

:22:04. > :22:06.It is a bit ugly looking, could be a bit fiddly if you have

:22:07. > :22:08.to have that always with you in your pocket.

:22:09. > :22:11.But that is their workaround, and Apple are sticking to it.

:22:12. > :22:32.A week packed with launches, but have any of them been the moon

:22:33. > :22:39.Have any of them boldly gone, or even gone boldly?
