0:00:00 > 0:00:01in Birmingham.
0:00:02 > 0:00:06That's it from me.
0:00:06 > 0:00:09More at two o'clock.
0:00:09 > 0:00:18Now it's time for Click.
0:00:47 > 0:01:00I've had enough. Enough of old tech. Going obsolete, or so it seems. Even
0:01:00 > 0:01:06the days of desktop computers are numbered. Right. Let's see what
0:01:06 > 0:01:13they've got us this year. The Consumer Electronics Show in Las
0:01:13 > 0:01:19Vegas is the place to find out. It's where the new products and concepts
0:01:19 > 0:01:23launch for 2018 and some of them might just change the world. One of
0:01:23 > 0:01:30the highlights for me is always finding out how Ben DLG is.
0:01:30 > 0:01:34Previously, they have been slightly bandy and this year, I think they
0:01:34 > 0:01:42have nailed it. It's a 65 inch rollup display and the image quality
0:01:42 > 0:01:48is really very good. And it does role completely up in two admittedly
0:01:48 > 0:01:55fairly chunky box. It's an blue LED display, the only display tech that
0:01:55 > 0:02:00can be fully flexible. The circuitry is built on a segmented back which
0:02:00 > 0:02:04is a bit like a retractable garage door. You can choose how far the
0:02:04 > 0:02:09screen rolls out as well as a widescreen TV which can be used as a
0:02:09 > 0:02:14thin notification bar. A wider format 21 ex nine cinema screen and
0:02:14 > 0:02:18of course nothing at all. The argument is that you can make use of
0:02:18 > 0:02:23the space behind it when you're not using it. And in South Korea, a lot
0:02:23 > 0:02:27of people live in high-rise blocks. Can you imagine lugging a TV like
0:02:27 > 0:02:34that up the stairs? Much easier if you can roll it down in a tube.
0:02:34 > 0:02:45Elsewhere, plenty of other things to see and play with here. Here is a
0:02:45 > 0:02:49telephone from Vivo that does not have a fingerprint scanner on the
0:02:49 > 0:02:53back is because it has one built into the screen. The display shines
0:02:53 > 0:03:01light on to your bum and an optical scanner registers what it sees. Here
0:03:01 > 0:03:11is the link below to let has dashed the link below 360. You can see it
0:03:11 > 0:03:15through first person view so others can feel like they were truly there
0:03:15 > 0:03:27as well. Though it's important to catch the eye at shows like these
0:03:27 > 0:03:32which is what this thing is doing. This is the hyper vision display and
0:03:32 > 0:03:37is capable of projecting life-size images high above the show floor.
0:03:37 > 0:03:43All right, sexy, that's enough from you. There is the science bit. We
0:03:43 > 0:03:49have 24 rapidly spinning LED strips. It gives you the illusion of a
0:03:49 > 0:03:54persistent image. In the flesh, I have to say, does really rather
0:03:54 > 0:04:03good. Oh, good grief. Another flimsy flimflam from me. Let's get Lara
0:04:03 > 0:04:07with some of the big announcement from the show. And what a week it
0:04:07 > 0:04:12has been with news from Tak's biggest players. Including the likes
0:04:12 > 0:04:18of Intel saying it will release software fixes to repair security
0:04:18 > 0:04:22issues surrounding its chips. We've had press events that have gone
0:04:22 > 0:04:27wrong with disobedient robots from LG. Col is not going to talk to me,
0:04:27 > 0:04:32she doesn't like me evidently. And Sony's robot dog wasn't that
0:04:32 > 0:04:37response of either. He is an autonomous robot and will quickly
0:04:37 > 0:04:43become a member of your family. Right?He ignored me. Meanwhile, a
0:04:43 > 0:04:46lack of female keynote speakers has caused controversy amongst
0:04:46 > 0:04:53attendees. A situation which is less -- which is meant to raise eyebrows
0:04:53 > 0:04:58compounded by the included in robotic pole dancers at a strip club
0:04:58 > 0:05:03near the event. And on the floor, as usual, TVs were everywhere but this
0:05:03 > 0:05:10one really stood out. The same sum wall is 140 inches wide and can be
0:05:10 > 0:05:15made larger by adding modules. And finally, Toyota has unveiled its new
0:05:15 > 0:05:22board economist Palette vehicle, to be used ridesharing, deliveries or
0:05:22 > 0:05:33even a moving storefront which comes directly to you. That was Lara. Now
0:05:33 > 0:05:38what are the big things at the moment is wireless charging. That
0:05:38 > 0:05:42normally means putting your phone on a pad that is also is possible to
0:05:42 > 0:05:46send power through the air. One of the problems with wireless power is
0:05:46 > 0:05:50the power is sent in every direction at the same time so wherever your
0:05:50 > 0:05:56device is, it only receives a tiny fraction of that power. Well, here
0:05:56 > 0:06:01is a system that gets around that by sending focused beams of power to
0:06:01 > 0:06:06one particular point. The power transmitter can be built into
0:06:06 > 0:06:11ceiling tiles, walls, tables or parts of the furniture. All it needs
0:06:11 > 0:06:16to know is which direction to point the power ridden. Here is the
0:06:16 > 0:06:20science bit. To work that out, the device needing the power sends out
0:06:20 > 0:06:27low-power signals in all directions, most of which are blocked by nearby
0:06:27 > 0:06:32objects. But the signals that do bounce around come from to give
0:06:32 > 0:06:38tangles. By sending the power back at exactly the same angles, that
0:06:38 > 0:06:42power bounces about and eventually gets back to the device. The makers
0:06:42 > 0:06:47to bash the makers told us they can achieve two watts of power from a
0:06:47 > 0:06:51distance of one metre which is about half the power of the smartphone
0:06:51 > 0:06:57Charger. I'm using this light to detect the power beams from the
0:06:57 > 0:07:06transmitter and the blackbox transceiver. Think about carrying
0:07:06 > 0:07:12out remotely. He never had to charge the battery again. But with high
0:07:12 > 0:07:18power beams bouncing around your home, you have to wonder if it is
0:07:18 > 0:07:27safe. We look to get FCC approval for safety. If you have accepted
0:07:27 > 0:07:34Wi-Fi into your home, excepting this technology would be the same. In the
0:07:34 > 0:07:38future, the power receivers could be made into any shape including that
0:07:38 > 0:07:44of a double a battery and that means ordinary devices could be converted
0:07:44 > 0:07:50to wireless power without any modification at all. For a long
0:07:50 > 0:07:54time, bricks and mortar shops have been trying to keep up with on line
0:07:54 > 0:07:57retailers that the added benefits of keeping track with customer habits
0:07:57 > 0:08:03as well is providing very easy ways of paying. Here is one way that we
0:08:03 > 0:08:08could see some of those features brought into the real world by
0:08:08 > 0:08:15retrofitting existing stores. I Poly uses off-the-shelf cameras, one
0:08:15 > 0:08:19appeared to track customers and one to take a look at the products and
0:08:19 > 0:08:24the customers interactions but the real work is happening here in the
0:08:24 > 0:08:28AI algorithms were it is advising all the products off-the-shelf and
0:08:28 > 0:08:33their customers interactions with them. At the AI is using the main
0:08:33 > 0:08:38cannon camera. It can recognise faces, identify close and follow
0:08:38 > 0:08:43their movements. Through the combination of the customers being
0:08:43 > 0:08:48recognised, when they get to the checkout, they don't even need to
0:08:48 > 0:08:52scan the items. They just need to pay. And if they agree to be
0:08:52 > 0:08:57remembered, and all they need to do is go and pick up their products and
0:08:57 > 0:09:17take them away. One thing which isn't making such a big noise this
0:09:17 > 0:09:29week is virtual reality. Is the our in its last chance? Billions have
0:09:29 > 0:09:33been poured into BR but the headsets are not selling the way companies
0:09:33 > 0:09:36had hoped. There are multiple problems. The set-up is too
0:09:36 > 0:09:46difficult. The content is not compelling enough. And a must is
0:09:46 > 0:09:51treated very carefully, the VR experience can and has made me feel
0:09:51 > 0:10:01sick. The manufacturers are not going to give up on this. The oculus
0:10:01 > 0:10:07go will be launched around March. That's like Samsung's VR but you
0:10:07 > 0:10:13don't need a phone for it to work, it is all built-in and around $200.
0:10:13 > 0:10:19HTC announced they are to release the five pro later this year, at
0:10:19 > 0:10:25three K headset which will improve resolution significantly and keep
0:10:25 > 0:10:31the Vive ahead of the curb. While oculus allows three degrees of
0:10:31 > 0:10:40movement which is that way, that way and that way, HTC has just launched
0:10:40 > 0:10:45its Vive focus in China which allows six degrees which is that, bad and
0:10:45 > 0:10:53that. And also three dimensions of movement in space. And that is using
0:10:53 > 0:10:56inside out tracking which means there are no sensors or lighthouses
0:10:56 > 0:11:01telling you whether headset is. The headset itself works out where it is
0:11:01 > 0:11:11in the environment. This is the next level four BR. Still, with Magic
0:11:11 > 0:11:16leap releasing its augmented reality with tons of activity like this, a
0:11:16 > 0:11:22cheap flat wake --a cheap flat pack way of building your own headset, BR
0:11:22 > 0:11:28continues to face a tough battle with a R which just seems a bit more
0:11:28 > 0:11:34ready to make its mark, if you ask me. I feel better than that. Anyway,
0:11:34 > 0:11:38time to move on. Here comes Lara with some hi-tech ways to stop
0:11:38 > 0:11:48thieves. At this you's show, few antitheft devices have been
0:11:48 > 0:11:58launched. And this is a prototype burglar prevention system. It aims
0:11:58 > 0:12:05to replicate what a burglar sounds like in your home sea can preset it
0:12:05 > 0:12:09with the way you live your life, whether you are watching a film,
0:12:09 > 0:12:13talking in the kitchen and when the lights are going to be going on and
0:12:13 > 0:12:25off. Or you could simply...Have you got a permit to those guns?
0:12:25 > 0:12:28Eventually, the plan would be that a group of synchronised devices could
0:12:28 > 0:12:32work through the house to make it look like natural movement from room
0:12:32 > 0:12:40to room. Of course, that would add to the cost. And this is a smart
0:12:40 > 0:12:45safe. Now I had to admit, when I received it, I did think, this is
0:12:45 > 0:12:49very light, very flimsy and how could it possibly be a safe because
0:12:49 > 0:12:55you could just steal this. But it seems that technology here could be
0:12:55 > 0:12:59used in bigger, stronger states and this particular model is possibly
0:12:59 > 0:13:03better for putting medicine in or something you want to keep away from
0:13:03 > 0:13:09the kids or other people visiting your house. So how it works. It
0:13:09 > 0:13:14connects via smartphone at which means you can Oatley open the safe
0:13:14 > 0:13:18should you wish to do that. And you will also relieve -- receive alerts
0:13:18 > 0:13:22if anybody tries to tamper with it. Let's set it up somewhere where it
0:13:22 > 0:13:28can remain in the steady place. This particular model has wings which
0:13:28 > 0:13:34extend into place. Let me put something in here. Let me timetable
0:13:34 > 0:13:38with it and see what happens.
0:13:40 > 0:13:47It is quite firmly attached. With a little bit more foresight could
0:13:47 > 0:13:56probably pull it out. Yep, there we go. Oh, it looks like it could be
0:13:56 > 0:14:08quite easy to open as well. Any ideas? Oh, dear. Let me try and find
0:14:08 > 0:14:16something that might be a bit better for security. It's not just about
0:14:16 > 0:14:20the home, though, this bag and is to keep your belongings safe when you
0:14:20 > 0:14:25are and about. Do if you are on a train or plane and you have to leave
0:14:25 > 0:14:29your Bag some where else you might want to activate this tamper alert
0:14:29 > 0:14:33which uses this ID card to turn it on and off. So if anybody tries to
0:14:33 > 0:14:43open your bag... It sounds like that! But if the issue is actually
0:14:43 > 0:14:46you forgetting, then this prevention device aims to conquer the rescue.
0:14:46 > 0:14:51You can attach it any given item and the company software will learn your
0:14:51 > 0:14:55habits. So what time and where you take that item and if you do
0:14:55 > 0:14:59something that seems out of the ordinary they can send your mind up
0:14:59 > 0:15:03before you've even had a chance to forget it. Eventually they are even
0:15:03 > 0:15:07hoping to be able to do things like access travel details through your
0:15:07 > 0:15:10e-mail, so you can get a reminder to pick up your passport without
0:15:10 > 0:15:14running the risk of leaving without it. The device does still seem a
0:15:14 > 0:15:17little bit big right now but they are trying to get a smaller version
0:15:17 > 0:15:21ready ahead of the launch. Great if it works, which was generally be
0:15:21 > 0:15:31seen with most of what I tested. -- generally the theme. That was Lara.
0:15:31 > 0:15:37This is a passenger drone made by a German company and this one actually
0:15:37 > 0:15:43has flown. I am constantly reminded that the future of transport will be
0:15:43 > 0:15:47amazingly here at CES, although there is no guarantee that that is
0:15:47 > 0:15:55true. Case in point. Remember the electric car, the Faraday Future?
0:15:55 > 0:16:03Well, that's show business. Now, this is a start-up started by some
0:16:03 > 0:16:07impressive people who came up with basically a computer on wheels. Will
0:16:07 > 0:16:17this car actually work? Dave Lee was given exclusive access to it before
0:16:17 > 0:16:22and during. I'll be honest, this wasn't the most thrilling test drive
0:16:22 > 0:16:29of my life. Worried about being spotted before their big CES
0:16:29 > 0:16:33unveiling, I was only a large test drive the car slowly around their
0:16:33 > 0:16:38unmarked warehouse. But it was very interesting. The company has created
0:16:38 > 0:16:42what is essentially a mobile supercomputer. They say it has more
0:16:42 > 0:16:46in common with your smartphone than it does the typical car and I agree.
0:16:46 > 0:16:50For the first time I've been impressed by a car and not because
0:16:50 > 0:16:54of its performance on the road but because of its operating system. The
0:16:54 > 0:16:59vision behind it is we want to be the company bringing into the market
0:16:59 > 0:17:02the first real smart car.The vehicle has been designed and
0:17:02 > 0:17:10created by a suitably qualified team, made up of former BMW and
0:17:10 > 0:17:15Apple enginners. Inside you will see the dashboard has been completely
0:17:15 > 0:17:18reimagined. The gesture control system does look a bit imprecise and
0:17:18 > 0:17:24quite fiddly not ideal when you are driving on a motorway at 70 mph.
0:17:24 > 0:17:29This looks like a really distracting driving situation.Isn't this
0:17:29 > 0:17:35actually quite dangerous? So the key is about customisation. When you
0:17:35 > 0:17:39worry and drive mode, we will actually disable certain features.
0:17:39 > 0:17:46You won't be able to get into watch videos, for instance. We want to
0:17:46 > 0:17:51build a platform where when there is someone driving all occupants in the
0:17:51 > 0:17:56car, including the driver, have the ability to interact. Some of the
0:17:56 > 0:18:00most exciting features will be disabled until we live in a world of
0:18:00 > 0:18:03fully autonomous driving. So perhaps think of this vehicle as bridging
0:18:03 > 0:18:10the gap between our dumb driving past... And our smart driving
0:18:10 > 0:18:15future. Of course you can't reveal a car at CES without an expensive,
0:18:15 > 0:18:21lavish launch event. This one went by without a hitch and people seemed
0:18:21 > 0:18:24impressed.It's really interesting idea but they are trying to target
0:18:24 > 0:18:31it at as an affordable price point, $40,000. -- target it out. And they
0:18:31 > 0:18:35are adding all of this cool technology, so I think it got a
0:18:35 > 0:18:39pretty good message. If you think all this seems a little familiar you
0:18:39 > 0:18:43are right. This was the scene at last year's CES, when I covered a
0:18:43 > 0:18:49new car company, Faraday Future. Back then they said everything was
0:18:49 > 0:18:53going swimmingly and their big factory would be built soon. But in
0:18:53 > 0:18:56less than a year the factory in Nevada has been scrapped and while
0:18:56 > 0:19:00the company insists it is still pressing ahead, Faraday Future is in
0:19:00 > 0:19:05serious danger of becoming a thing of the past. So what will happen to
0:19:05 > 0:19:10Biton? The biggest challenge facing them right now is to do with
0:19:10 > 0:19:15charging. Kessler has more than 8000 superchargers for their cars dotted
0:19:15 > 0:19:25all over the world and Biton has none. When it comes to making the
0:19:25 > 0:19:29car, they are building bears in Nanjing, China, and they promised
0:19:29 > 0:19:33their car will be put into production by the end of 2019 and
0:19:33 > 0:19:42one-day cost $45,000. We will have to see how that goes.
0:19:42 > 0:19:46There will be plenty more transport on next week's Nick macro. In the
0:19:46 > 0:19:53meantime I am having my nails done. This is the O2 Nails printer. Choose
0:19:53 > 0:19:58any image and they will print it on to your nail. Of course I chose a
0:19:58 > 0:20:05picture of myself. OK, Richard Taylor, beat that!
0:20:05 > 0:20:12Refreshing! They are creating a vacuum in my mouth and sucking at my
0:20:12 > 0:20:16gums and at the same time circulating water around my teeth.
0:20:16 > 0:20:20It is intended for users with reduced mobility or people who have
0:20:20 > 0:20:23difficulty brushing their teeth. It replaces the need to brush and
0:20:23 > 0:20:28floss. The guys are working on integrating centres in the future
0:20:28 > 0:20:32devices so that oral hygienist or dentists will be able to diagnose
0:20:32 > 0:20:38and treat forgone disease. It's quite tickly as well.
0:20:38 > 0:20:42This is being marketed as the world's first smart baby feeding
0:20:42 > 0:20:47monitor. You put your baby bottle, any baby bottle, into the device, it
0:20:47 > 0:20:50has a temperature sensor to make sure the milk is the right
0:20:50 > 0:20:54temperature, it has a motion sensor which flushes read if you are
0:20:54 > 0:20:59holding the bottle at a particular angle -- flashes red. And it is
0:20:59 > 0:21:03Wi-Fi enabled. If there is a nanny feeding at home and the mummies at
0:21:03 > 0:21:07work, the results of the feeding are uploaded to the smartphone at work
0:21:07 > 0:21:13so mum can tell exactly how much the baby has drunk.
0:21:19 > 0:21:23What you are seeing here is a magical chessboard. It allows
0:21:23 > 0:21:26players to play with each other regardless of where they are in the
0:21:26 > 0:21:33world. Right now someone is playing by their phone and an electric
0:21:33 > 0:21:39armies dragging the different pieces to the rights. Pretty cool!
0:21:39 > 0:21:44CES can really take it out of you and I for one am already pretty
0:21:44 > 0:21:50sleep deprived. What I have here is a device that is packed with all
0:21:50 > 0:21:54sorts of technology and the claim is it will provide within 20 minutes
0:21:54 > 0:21:59the equivalent of 2-5 hours sleep. There will be a leap is put behind
0:21:59 > 0:22:02might use effectively through this device that are transmitting signals
0:22:02 > 0:22:07up to my brain. I'm going to try this on and I'll see you in 20
0:22:07 > 0:22:14minutes. I'll tell you what, he has the right
0:22:14 > 0:22:21idea. Walking around here is absolutely exhausting.
0:22:27 > 0:22:32I'm definitely feeling more relaxed than I was like 26 minutes ago. Of
0:22:32 > 0:22:36course I don't know how relaxed would have felt with just a 26
0:22:36 > 0:22:44minute power nap, but I'm ready to rock 'n' roll. Vegas. Home to
0:22:44 > 0:22:49world-class talent, and singing superstars. And then there's Richard
0:22:49 > 0:22:56Taylor and me. This karaoke box uses a professional altering technology
0:22:56 > 0:23:13on your voice. Next stop, Cesar's. It's not just me on eliminating the
0:23:13 > 0:23:21strip this week, Intel has put on a light show of its own using LED
0:23:21 > 0:23:25drawings, obviously... Flying above the famous the large your fountains,
