0:02:28 > 0:02:33- Do you feel under pressure - to conform to a certain look?

0:02:34 > 0:02:38- It is an unfortunate part - of the fashion industry.

0:02:38 > 0:02:43- Because it's all about - people's looks and image...

0:02:44 > 0:02:46- ..you are judged anyway.

0:02:48 > 0:02:53- Jayne contacted Hannah - to ask her to take part in the show.

0:02:53 > 0:02:58- As a designer, she likes models - similar to Hannah, who's a size 10.

0:03:01 > 0:03:03- Jayne has been fantastic.

0:03:03 > 0:03:08- She's also very supportive - of that kind of life.

0:03:08 > 0:03:13- It's not a matter of having to be - size zero to be on the catwalk.

0:03:13 > 0:03:18- The image of the fashion industry - is that it's fairly cutthroat.

0:03:18 > 0:03:20- Would you say that's fair?

0:03:20 > 0:03:22- No, to be honest with you.

0:03:22 > 0:03:27- The experiences I've had - over the past three days...

0:03:28 > 0:03:30- ..have been very positive.

0:03:30 > 0:03:34- No-one's been cruel, especially - about my image or my look.

0:03:38 > 0:03:43- While Hannah - prepares for the big show...

0:03:43 > 0:03:46- ..I catch up - with the designer, Jayne Pierson.

0:03:47 > 0:03:49- When it comes - to creating your pieces...

0:03:50 > 0:03:53- ...and looking - at the models to wear them...

0:03:53 > 0:03:56- ..what do you look for - in a casting, for example?

0:03:56 > 0:04:01- I like to have a girl with a lot - of charisma and presence...

0:04:01 > 0:04:06- ..and a beautiful, shapely physique - that looks healthy and dynamic.

0:04:06 > 0:04:10- When you design, you wouldn't - design a piece that's a size zero?

0:04:10 > 0:04:12- Absolutely not, no.

0:04:12 > 0:04:15- Straight off the catwalk, - it goes to the press office.

0:04:15 > 0:04:18- And we have normal girls - wearing our stuff.

0:04:20 > 0:04:24- According to Jayne, - the model agencies are to blame...

0:04:25 > 0:04:27- ..for sending models - who are too thin.

0:04:29 > 0:04:34- We get what we're given, and we - select from the girls that show up.

0:04:35 > 0:04:38- Sometimes, some of the girls - are very, very thin...

0:04:38 > 0:04:42- ..in which case - we don't confirm or cast them.

0:04:42 > 0:04:47- Nobody wants to see a girl - painfully thin, they just look ill.

0:04:56 > 0:05:01- Looking at the models, they all look - very different from one another.

0:05:01 > 0:05:03- Having said that, they are thin.

0:05:03 > 0:05:06- There's no escaping - the truth of that.

0:05:06 > 0:05:09- The clothes look interesting.

0:05:10 > 0:05:14- Personally, I don't get them, - but who am I to say anything?

0:05:23 > 0:05:27- Here we are, the big moment.

0:05:35 > 0:05:37- And a mere moment it was.

0:05:37 > 0:05:42- After all the preparations, - the show is over in ten minutes.

0:05:43 > 0:05:47- How did you feel - when you were on the runway?

0:05:47 > 0:05:50- I was nervous. - I didn't expect that many people.

0:05:51 > 0:05:55- It's a tick on that bucket list.

0:05:55 > 0:05:56- Really good.

0:05:58 > 0:06:03- While I'm in London, I meet - another model from West Wales...

0:06:03 > 0:06:06- ..trying to make a name for herself.

0:06:06 > 0:06:10- Cira Sharp-Taylor - is considered a plus size model.

0:06:10 > 0:06:13- What does that mean - for someone like her?

0:06:14 > 0:06:16- She hails from Ceredigion...

0:06:16 > 0:06:20- ..but now lives in London - and works as a full-time model.

0:06:30 > 0:06:31- These were on Boohoo, were they?

0:06:31 > 0:06:32- These were on Boohoo, were they?- - Yes, on Boohoo.

0:06:34 > 0:06:36- Cira saw a competition - on Instagram...

0:06:37 > 0:06:41- ..to win modelling work - with online clothes retailer Boohoo.

0:06:41 > 0:06:44- Over 66,000 people entered, - but she won.

0:06:47 > 0:06:52- Boohoo picked me up straight away - and I did a photo shoot for them.

0:06:52 > 0:06:56- Then I tried for an agency.

0:06:56 > 0:07:00- The first one said no - because I was too short.

0:07:01 > 0:07:06- I then went to IMM, - who signed me immediately.

0:07:06 > 0:07:11- She now gets plenty of work - through agency IMM as a curve model.

0:07:11 > 0:07:16- She has also moved to London - to secure full-time modelling work.

0:07:16 > 0:07:19- What do you think - of the label plus size model?

0:07:20 > 0:07:23- I don't think - that title should exist.

0:07:23 > 0:07:28- It should be size zero - through to what, size 26...

0:07:28 > 0:07:30- ..not the term plus size.

0:07:32 > 0:07:37- This afternoon, I accompany Cira to - her agency, IMM, to see her at work.

0:07:49 > 0:07:54- We'll just go over your card - and pictures and take measurements.

0:07:54 > 0:07:58- We'll do Polaroids of you - in your attire, then a small video.

0:07:58 > 0:08:02- The agency has over 30 years' - experience in the field...

0:08:03 > 0:08:06- ..and works with all kinds - of men and women.

0:08:07 > 0:08:08- What does your role entail exactly?

0:08:08 > 0:08:11- What does your role entail exactly?- - I look after all the curve models.

0:08:11 > 0:08:13- Size 10 plus.

0:08:13 > 0:08:15- That's like, curve.

0:08:15 > 0:08:19- It's not the natural model type - that you see on the runway.

0:08:19 > 0:08:22- It's girls that have - a bit more to them.

0:08:23 > 0:08:25- People want to see now - what represents them.

0:08:26 > 0:08:30- Campaigns that use people that are - like real people of all ages.

0:08:30 > 0:08:35- People will invest in that rather - than people they'll never look like.

0:08:36 > 0:08:39- What does Paige think - about the size zero debate?

0:08:39 > 0:08:44- Are the designers to blame, or the - agencies, as Jayne Pierson said?

0:08:45 > 0:08:50- I know designers blame the agencies - for sending them size zero models.

0:08:51 > 0:08:53- But you blame the designers.

0:08:53 > 0:08:56- Who's at fault, is my question.

0:08:56 > 0:08:58- I mean, I think, everyone.

0:08:59 > 0:09:02- Rosalie Nelson - has a massive petition...

0:09:03 > 0:09:05- ..after she was told - to get to the bone.

0:09:05 > 0:09:10- That's the agent's fault for telling - these young people to lose weight.

0:09:10 > 0:09:14- It's also the powerhouses - and fashion people's fault.

0:09:14 > 0:09:19- In a way, they don't want bigger - models because of their samples.

0:09:19 > 0:09:22- What they create, - the budget and materials.

0:09:22 > 0:09:25- There's blame - in everyone's court, really.

0:09:29 > 0:09:34- But some suffer long-term damage - because of the pressure to be thin.

0:09:34 > 0:09:38- I'm on my way - to meet Nia Marshalsay-Thomas.

0:09:38 > 0:09:41- She has been a model - for ten years...

0:09:41 > 0:09:45- ..and recently returned to work - after having a baby.

0:09:45 > 0:09:49- Today, she's having some new photos - taken for her portfolio.

0:09:50 > 0:09:55- You're now a commercial model, - but you have done catwalk work.

0:09:55 > 0:09:56- What was that like?

0:09:56 > 0:10:00- The catwalk stuff - was fairly negative, really.

0:10:00 > 0:10:04- I did a launch of wedding dresses.

0:10:04 > 0:10:06- It was quite a big company...

0:10:06 > 0:10:09- ..so I was excited - that they'd asked me.

0:10:09 > 0:10:13- I went up there, got the train home - and I was crying on the train.

0:10:14 > 0:10:17- I just felt - that I was the biggest girl there.

0:10:17 > 0:10:21- I'm a size 10, - which isn't big at all.

0:10:21 > 0:10:23- But I felt massive there.

0:10:27 > 0:10:31- You also got a message - from someone telling you directly...

0:10:31 > 0:10:33- ..that you had to lose weight.

0:10:33 > 0:10:34- Yes.

0:10:35 > 0:10:39- I got a message on social media - asking to represent me.

0:10:39 > 0:10:45- I said yes, I was so excited - and sent them my measurements.

0:10:45 > 0:10:50- They were keen to represent me - but I had to be a genuine size 8...

0:10:50 > 0:10:52- ..and lose this amount of weight.

0:10:54 > 0:10:58- Because he told me that I'd succeed - just by losing weight...

0:10:58 > 0:11:03- ..I felt I had to do it - or never make it in this industry.

0:11:11 > 0:11:13- Nia comes from Aberystwyth.

0:11:14 > 0:11:16- She invited me to her home...

0:11:16 > 0:11:19- ..to talk more - about the pressure to lose weight...

0:11:20 > 0:11:22- ..and how that - drove her to extremes.

0:11:22 > 0:11:28- I turned to laxative abuse, - and took laxatives every day...

0:11:28 > 0:11:30- ..just to lose weight.

0:11:30 > 0:11:34- Once my body - had got used to taking one...

0:11:34 > 0:11:38- ..it didn't work any longer, - so I'd take more and more.

0:11:39 > 0:11:41- I lived at home at the time.

0:11:41 > 0:11:44- I'd considered - forcing myself to vomit and so on.

0:11:44 > 0:11:47- But my family would have noticed.

0:11:47 > 0:11:49- I could do this on the sly.

0:11:49 > 0:11:52- Taking a tablet - without anyone knowing.

0:11:53 > 0:11:56- After her body - became so used to laxatives...

0:11:57 > 0:12:00- ..she's now dependent on them - to go to the toilet.

0:12:02 > 0:12:05- Eventually, - I had to go to the doctor.

0:12:05 > 0:12:10- Now, I have to take prescription - laxatives twice daily, every day.

0:12:10 > 0:12:11- Have you got them?

0:12:11 > 0:12:13- Have you got them?- - Yes, they're here.

0:12:13 > 0:12:17- I just mix this up - with water every day.

0:12:18 > 0:12:20- It tastes horrendous.

0:12:20 > 0:12:24- It says orange, but it doesn't - taste anything like orange.

0:12:24 > 0:12:27- You mix the powder with water...

0:12:27 > 0:12:28- ..twice a day.

0:12:32 > 0:12:34- I caused this myself.

0:12:36 > 0:12:37- It's my own fault.

0:12:38 > 0:12:43- I had no idea that taking - laxatives could be so harmful.

0:12:43 > 0:12:47- Nia says that she faces this - for the rest of her life.

0:12:48 > 0:12:50- It's really embarrassing.

0:12:50 > 0:12:55- Your body is totally amazing, - it does everything for you.

0:12:55 > 0:12:58- But I've broken my body, in a way...

0:12:58 > 0:13:02- ..by forcing it to work in a way - it was never meant to function.

0:13:02 > 0:13:08- I'm disappointed that I did it, - really disappointed.

0:13:10 > 0:13:15- Nia has now given up catwalk - modelling for commercial work.

0:13:16 > 0:13:19- She says that she feels - more at home there.

0:13:20 > 0:13:26- Once I found commercial agencies, - I think I was happy.

0:13:26 > 0:13:28- I used to not drink water.

0:13:29 > 0:13:33- Since I've been with the commercial - agencies, that's all gone.

0:13:33 > 0:13:36- They've seen my photos - and my measurements.

0:13:36 > 0:13:39- They know exactly - what they're getting.

0:13:43 > 0:13:46- In part two, je vais a Paris, - I go to Paris...

0:13:46 > 0:13:49- ..to look at the brave steps - being taken...

0:14:33 > 0:14:36- A new law has come into force...

0:14:36 > 0:14:40- ..requiring the phrase - photographie retouchee...

0:15:01 > 0:15:03- That bill became law in May 2017.

0:17:32 > 0:17:35- I went to visit agencies, - a typical thing that models do.

0:17:35 > 0:17:39- A lot said I was either too fat - or too old, when I was 20 years old.

0:17:40 > 0:17:43- One particular agency - said they'd like to take me on...

0:17:43 > 0:17:46- ..but that I had to lose - a bit of weight.

0:17:46 > 0:17:49- I lost weight for them, - about 10 kilos or 20 pounds.

0:17:49 > 0:17:53- I lost two inches - around my hips and my waist.

0:17:53 > 0:17:57- I went back and was told - that I was making good progress.

0:17:57 > 0:17:59- But they wanted me down to the bone.

0:18:00 > 0:18:03- To think they could be - asking that of girls or boys...

0:18:03 > 0:18:07- ..much younger than I am, - it completely broke my heart.

0:18:08 > 0:18:13- After that experience, Rosie - started a petition in Britain...

0:18:13 > 0:18:17- ..for a law to protect models - from having to be too thin.

0:18:17 > 0:18:20- It now has - almost 150,000 signatures.

0:18:26 > 0:18:29- Being super thin - isn't the way forward.

0:18:29 > 0:18:33- The agency I'm with now has - a healthier vision for the industry.

0:18:33 > 0:18:35- I wish all the agencies - would be like that.

0:18:35 > 0:18:39- With her petition and the publicity - for the French law...

0:18:39 > 0:18:44- ..she's confident that the fashion - industry will change for the better.

0:18:44 > 0:18:49- Without it, we're going the way - of anorexia and eating disorders...

0:18:49 > 0:18:53- ..and promoting that as a luxurious - way to be, and that's wrong.

0:18:54 > 0:18:56- France has implemented - their legislation.

0:18:57 > 0:18:59- It'd be great for the UK to follow.

0:19:01 > 0:19:04- But what about - the designers of the future?

0:19:16 > 0:19:19- I also hope to speak - to some of his students.

0:19:19 > 0:19:21- As the designers of the future...

0:19:21 > 0:19:25- ..I want to hear their opinions - about these changes.

0:19:40 > 0:19:44- What's your opinion - of Kering and LVMH's charter?

0:19:44 > 0:19:46- It's very interesting.

0:19:46 > 0:19:49- Yes, it's fairly new and ambiguous.

0:19:49 > 0:19:52- On a global level, - it's a good thing...

0:19:52 > 0:19:57- ..because it bans sizes 4 and 6, - which are both very thin.

0:19:58 > 0:20:03- But what is a little awkward is that - it lays down some kind of rules...

0:20:03 > 0:20:08- ..about what is normal - for women and what isn't.

0:20:08 > 0:20:13- There are young women - with such figures naturally.

0:20:13 > 0:20:18- We seem to be telling them they're - not normal, which is awkward.

0:20:20 > 0:20:24- Anorexia affects 30,000 - to 40,000 people in France...

0:20:24 > 0:20:26- ..with 90% of them female.

0:20:26 > 0:20:29- But Jean-Marc feels - that another problem...

0:20:29 > 0:20:32- ..causes more distress - than anorexia.

0:20:33 > 0:20:36- Anorexia is a serious problem...

0:20:36 > 0:20:39- ..but it affects far fewer people - than obesity.

0:20:39 > 0:20:42- We shouldn't distort - our idea of beauty...

0:20:43 > 0:20:47- ..so that obesity is accepted, - because we know how bad it is.

0:20:48 > 0:20:51- Afterwards, he introduces me - to some of his students.

0:20:52 > 0:20:55- But are they glad to see - the fashion industry changing?

0:21:06 > 0:21:09- What do you think of the charter?

0:21:09 > 0:21:10- Is it a good idea or not?

0:21:11 > 0:21:15- I think it's a good idea because - most models are in their teens.

0:21:16 > 0:21:20- I don't think they should - be forced to be too thin...

0:21:20 > 0:21:22- ..or to be a particular size.

0:21:23 > 0:21:25- I think it's a good thing...

0:21:26 > 0:21:30- ..because many young girls - want to look like models.

0:21:30 > 0:21:32- They forget that it's unnatural.

0:21:33 > 0:21:35- It's not attractive to be too thin.

0:21:38 > 0:21:44- But do the Welsh models want - to see these changes in Britain?

0:21:47 > 0:21:51- Would you welcome - similar rules in Britain?

0:21:51 > 0:21:53- What do you think?

0:21:53 > 0:21:55- What do you think?- - No, I don't think so.

0:21:55 > 0:21:58- Some girls - are naturally "size zero".

0:21:58 > 0:22:02- Others, like me, - are a natural size 12.

0:22:02 > 0:22:05- Those girls - can't do anything about it.

0:22:06 > 0:22:08- I could never go to a size zero.

0:22:08 > 0:22:10- It wouldn't be natural for my body.

0:22:16 > 0:22:21- Is it good to see - these leading fashion houses...

0:22:21 > 0:22:24- ..taking steps - to improve the situation?

0:22:25 > 0:22:28- It's good that they are, - but everyone needs to do it.

0:22:28 > 0:22:30- A couple may have done this...

0:22:31 > 0:22:35- ..but some still strongly believe - in using very thin models.

0:22:38 > 0:22:43- There is still pressure to be - perfect in the fashion industry.

0:22:43 > 0:22:46- Models need to look good - to sell the clothes.

0:22:50 > 0:22:52- But what is that ideal image?

0:22:54 > 0:22:59- What's important for Nia is that - models are happy with their bodies.

0:23:02 > 0:23:04- Knowing what you know now...

0:23:04 > 0:23:08- ..and having been through - what you have...

0:23:08 > 0:23:11- ..what would you tell - the younger Nia?

0:23:12 > 0:23:16- I'd tell her that she was stupid - to even consider doing what I did.

0:23:16 > 0:23:19- I've destroyed my body, in a way.

0:23:19 > 0:23:24- You must be happy in your own skin, - because you are who you are.

0:23:24 > 0:23:26- I've realized that now.

0:23:27 > 0:23:31- It's unfortunate and disappointing - that it took me so long...

0:23:31 > 0:23:35- ..that I can find work - and be happy as I am.
