:00:13. > :00:20.Libyan government forces claim that they've driven out Gaddafi

:00:20. > :00:22.loyalists from Sirte - their last major stronghold. There've been

:00:22. > :00:32.wild celebrations on the frontline but interim authorities remain

:00:32. > :00:38.

:00:38. > :00:45.cautious and say that Sirte is Welcome to GMT. I'm Naga Munchetty.

:00:45. > :00:48.Also in the programme: The Greek parliament prepares to pass the

:00:48. > :00:56.latest raft of austerity measures as protests continue on day two of

:00:56. > :01:01.a general strike. 100 Years On from an epic and

:01:01. > :01:07.tragic adventure, we look back on the expedition of Captain Scott to

:01:07. > :01:09.the Antarctic. It's midday here in London, 7:00am in Washington and

:01:09. > :01:12.1:00pm in Libya where forces of the country's national transitional

:01:12. > :01:21.council are claiming victory in Sirte, Colonel Gaddafi's home town

:01:21. > :01:29.and the scene of a last stand by his supporters. We have also heard

:01:29. > :01:33.that Colonel Gadaffi, rumoured, has been captured in the town of Sirte.

:01:33. > :01:38.There are also rumours that he has been injured, his legs have been

:01:38. > :01:44.injured. And national transitional council officials have mentioned

:01:44. > :01:49.two various news agencies that he had been captured. We are trying to

:01:49. > :01:51.confirm this with correspondence on the ground. Let's go to our

:01:51. > :01:58.correspondent in Tripoli where there are wild celebrations being

:01:58. > :02:04.heard. That is right, the news has reached Tripoli, and you can hear

:02:04. > :02:08.some of the noises around May, people tooting their car horns and

:02:08. > :02:13.we have had quite a bit of celebratory gunfire even though

:02:13. > :02:16.there has been a religious edict to ban that. People should not fire

:02:16. > :02:22.guns in celebration because people have been wooed in and killed in

:02:22. > :02:26.that kind of firing. -- wounded and killed. The news is filtering

:02:26. > :02:31.through here. We are waiting to see evidence of this, but if it has

:02:31. > :02:35.happened and Sirte has fallen and Colonel Gadaffi has been captured

:02:36. > :02:40.today it will be an extraordinary victory for the new authorities,

:02:40. > :02:46.even capturing Sirte would be a hugely significant milestone.

:02:46. > :02:51.Colonel Gaddafi's home town, his birthplace, but village he turned

:02:51. > :02:55.into his second capital. N T C officials think he was hiding

:02:55. > :03:01.somewhere in the desert and believed he might still be in Libya.

:03:01. > :03:05.He said many times he would fight to the end and not lead his country.

:03:05. > :03:12.And if the announcements are true, and there is a bit of celebratory

:03:12. > :03:18.gunfire there, then a hugely important day for the newly beer.

:03:18. > :03:22.People are already celebrating. -- for the new Libya. You have spent a

:03:22. > :03:29.lot of time in Libya and the celebrations do seem rather wild

:03:29. > :03:34.and very prominent. We have heard rumours, 10 a penny throughout the

:03:34. > :03:38.conflict, but have you ever seen celebrations that makes this seem

:03:38. > :03:42.more like rumour and speculation and is close to being confirmed?

:03:42. > :03:46.I'm afraid it was hard to hear you but you are asking about the scale

:03:46. > :03:53.of the celebrations. There was a lot of gunfire last week and there

:03:53. > :03:59.were rumours that Colonel Gaddafi's son, his national security adviser,

:03:59. > :04:05.had been captured, but the capture of Muammar Gaddafi himself, the man

:04:05. > :04:09.who ruled this country for 42 years and the overthrow of his

:04:09. > :04:14.dictatorship which caused so much blood to flow in Libya would be

:04:14. > :04:20.hugely significant. Whether they have not yet seen the evidence for

:04:20. > :04:26.it is true, the Libyans here are celebrating already. Caroline,

:04:26. > :04:28.thank you very much. I know you will be chasing the story up. We

:04:28. > :04:33.have our World Affairs Correspondent here with us. Mark,

:04:33. > :04:39.this is an interesting scene. As I mentioned, rumours are 10 a penny.

:04:39. > :04:42.It is easy to get carried away, but it seems there is evidence with the

:04:42. > :04:46.National Transitional Council saying this is the case.

:04:46. > :04:50.correspondent is trying to confirm it as we speak, but we already have

:04:50. > :04:56.to news agencies independently reporting quoting different

:04:56. > :05:00.officials that Gaddafi has been captured and they are both saying

:05:00. > :05:05.that he has been wounded. One saying badly wounded, another

:05:05. > :05:09.saying he has been wounded in both legs. Both of the news agencies are

:05:09. > :05:12.telling the same story and quoting the council officials. But there

:05:12. > :05:18.have been false alarms in the past then we will have to wait a few

:05:18. > :05:22.more minutes to get confirmation and possibly even pictures.

:05:22. > :05:27.might cloud will clarify the picture, but one National

:05:27. > :05:32.Transitional Council said the head of the armed forces has been killed

:05:32. > :05:39.during the capture of the Libyan leader. He was never going to be an

:05:39. > :05:42.easy capture, and he did foul to stand until the last. If this has

:05:42. > :05:45.happened to a Mac -- in Sirte there has been prolonged fighting there

:05:45. > :05:48.and it would explain if he was there and had been captured it

:05:48. > :05:51.would explain why the fighting was so fierce and why these guys have

:05:51. > :05:55.held out so long. On the other hand they may have held out so long

:05:55. > :06:01.because they feared for their own lives as well. We are in the realms

:06:01. > :06:08.of speculation. But with the speculation, let's assume that it

:06:08. > :06:12.is fact. If he has been captured one of our report is is at the

:06:12. > :06:18.hospital where it is understood Gaddafi has been taken and I bring

:06:18. > :06:23.this news 2 as we get it, but the troops there are saying that he has

:06:23. > :06:30.been taken to Misrata and they also claim to have possession of some of

:06:30. > :06:38.his things, including his Golden Gun. The future of Gaddafi, they

:06:38. > :06:40.hope, I suppose that he gets a fair trial. Is this likely from the

:06:40. > :06:44.National Transitional Council with the world watching? There has been

:06:44. > :06:49.talk of a trial, the let's concentrate on what is happening

:06:49. > :06:51.now for the time being. If it is the case he was taken to hospital

:06:51. > :06:55.then somewhere else, that would be logical because they would really

:06:55. > :06:59.want to ensure his physical security, not only because they

:06:59. > :07:09.want to capture him but perhaps because they do not want others to

:07:09. > :07:09.

:07:10. > :07:15.attack him or be accused of killing him without a trial. And I'm sure

:07:15. > :07:17.that is what is taking place. Reuters now reporting that the

:07:17. > :07:21.Russian President Medvedev are saying that the Libyan people

:07:21. > :07:28.should decide the fate of Gadaffi. There has been talk that they

:07:28. > :07:31.should be trial in the Hague and indictments for a trial at the

:07:31. > :07:34.International Criminal Court, but the wide and handsome -- National

:07:34. > :07:37.Transitional Council have been going about having a nationalist

:07:37. > :07:45.agenda and perhaps have a trial in their own country maybe they want

:07:45. > :07:48.to do that. But that will just prolong the instability, and

:07:48. > :07:54.certainly the dangers are there if you hold a trial in the country

:07:54. > :08:00.because it is sometimes easier to have the trial at the Hague. All of

:08:00. > :08:04.this is still speculation. Just to bring you more information we are

:08:04. > :08:07.hearing from a National Transitional Council Television

:08:07. > :08:13.that Colonel Gadaffi was captured with his son. Not surprising that

:08:13. > :08:16.some family members would be with him. Yes, some of his children have

:08:16. > :08:22.escaped to neighbouring countries. It was rumoured that one of his

:08:22. > :08:27.sons was with him. It would make sense if there was a final redoubt

:08:27. > :08:33.that they would be together and perhaps they have now been captured.

:08:33. > :08:36.Does this now draw a line, if he has been captured, under Gaddafi's

:08:36. > :08:42.presence in Libya, and how much of a difference will we see in the

:08:42. > :08:48.country as it moves forward? It was crucial from their point of view

:08:48. > :08:52.that they should capture him. Not only was he giving statements to

:08:52. > :08:57.television and radio stations, some of them based in Syria which were

:08:57. > :09:01.broadcast back in thereby making it clear that he did not control the

:09:01. > :09:06.whole situation, there was that aspect and also the fact that

:09:06. > :09:11.Colonel Gaddafi has many supporters in Libya. He ruled for 40 years and

:09:11. > :09:17.distributed a lot of oil money with largesse and did generate a lot of

:09:17. > :09:20.enthusiasm amongst some people. So that also has to be dealt with.

:09:20. > :09:25.Let's recap what we have been hearing, but his muse is flooding

:09:25. > :09:31.in. I will leave it with you, but we have heard that Colonel Gaddafi

:09:31. > :09:35.has been captured. There are two independent news agencies, the

:09:35. > :09:37.French news agency, and Reuters, both quoting officials of the

:09:37. > :09:41.National Transitional Council as saying that Colonel Gaddafi has

:09:41. > :09:48.been captured. We have not been able to confirm this from BBC

:09:48. > :09:50.sources, but our correspondence on the job, obviously. Both of these

:09:50. > :09:55.agencies are saying that Colonel Gaddafi has been injured, one that

:09:55. > :10:00.he has been injured badly in both legs. Mark, thank you very much.

:10:00. > :10:02.You will be keeping across this as the news develops. Libyan

:10:03. > :10:07.television is broadcasting that Colonel Gadaffi has been captured.

:10:07. > :10:17.We can bring you this with translation as it is being

:10:17. > :10:21.

:10:21. > :10:27.In the name of God, and we thank God Almighty, guard who has made

:10:27. > :10:31.the rebels victorious, the Libyan people victorious, and today

:10:31. > :10:35.without any doubt he is in the hands of the rebels. Colonel

:10:35. > :10:42.Gaddafi is in the hands of the rebels. This is an exclusive report

:10:42. > :10:52.we are bringing you. These brave rebels that have achieved victory,

:10:52. > :10:54.

:10:54. > :10:59.they have made the liberation of Tripoli, and the 20th is the

:10:59. > :11:06.liberation of Sirte. We have captured Gaddafi. Libya is joyous.

:11:06. > :11:12.Libya is celebrating. Libya is giving a lesson to all of those who

:11:12. > :11:15.want to learn. I salute you, rebels. I salute the revolutionaries who

:11:15. > :11:23.have captured this criminal, this criminal who has killed the mothers

:11:23. > :11:31.of the martyrs. This is your day. You have sacrificed your youth,

:11:31. > :11:36.your son's for the liberty of Libya. All of our mothers will be joyful

:11:36. > :11:42.and happy. I cannot find the necessary words to express what I

:11:42. > :11:47.feel. This is not a news item, this is a happening we are in --

:11:47. > :11:53.reporting. For 40 years the country has been bleeding and has been

:11:53. > :11:59.depressed and suffering, and nobody was trying to heal our wombs except

:12:00. > :12:05.the rebels who took to the streets on 17th February, and today they

:12:05. > :12:11.have achieved the victory, I repeat, victory. They have captured this

:12:11. > :12:17.criminal who had destroyed this country. And despite all of the

:12:17. > :12:21.distraction, he actually pillaged the country. We saw on 17th

:12:21. > :12:26.February how heat destroyed and pillage, and today, ladies and

:12:26. > :12:29.gentlemen, we will try to convey to you the happiness of our people.

:12:29. > :12:34.That was a recording as the statement was given on Libyan

:12:34. > :12:39.television. It was an emotional broadcast, not surprisingly. That

:12:39. > :12:43.takes us a step further. We are now seen for ourselves the officials

:12:43. > :12:47.going publicly on Libyan TV saying they have captured Colonel Gaddafi

:12:47. > :12:52.and that Sirte has been, in their words, liberated, describing

:12:52. > :12:56.Colonel Gaddafi as a criminal who has pillaged the country. But many

:12:56. > :13:02.people in Libya will not quite believe this until they see a

:13:02. > :13:06.picture of Colonel Gadaffi himself for some clear evidence. They are

:13:06. > :13:09.already celebrating on the streets of Tripoli. We could see that from

:13:10. > :13:14.a colleague in Tripoli and there will horns going off, as you would

:13:14. > :13:20.expect. These are live pictures, and at the celebrations still going

:13:20. > :13:24.on all around. Absolutely. Many Libyans will still be waiting to

:13:24. > :13:28.see that picture of Colonel Gaddafi and if the television crustacean is

:13:28. > :13:31.correct, and it seems inconceivable they would go on air saying

:13:31. > :13:36.anything -- the national television station. He would be very bad for

:13:36. > :13:42.the credibility of the National to transitional council, and now they

:13:42. > :13:46.are waiting for pictures. We can speak in Tripoli to the Libyan

:13:46. > :13:50.national transitional council spokesman. Obviously, the news is

:13:50. > :13:57.coming through in the last hour or so. Can you tell me what you have

:13:57. > :14:03.heard and what she can confirm? what you can confirm? We are not

:14:03. > :14:06.sure it has been liberated, and it is a great day for the people

:14:06. > :14:12.waiting for this liberation and people are celebrating not only the

:14:12. > :14:19.liberation of Sirte, but also about some reports that the big fish has

:14:19. > :14:22.been captured in Sirte and moved it to Misrata. We are waiting for

:14:22. > :14:27.confirmation from the National Transitional Council in Benghazi.

:14:27. > :14:35.Before that, we cannot confirm that Muammar Gaddafi or any other of the

:14:35. > :14:39.big fish have been arrested and moved to Misrata. Some local and

:14:39. > :14:43.radio news is saying that, but we need confirmation, and that will

:14:43. > :14:49.come from the National Transitional Council in Benghazi. Let's break

:14:49. > :14:52.the story down a little bit. Do you know of the events that led to this

:14:52. > :15:01.speculated capture? Where it could have happened and who actually

:15:01. > :15:05.The audio is very bad, could you repeat the question? Can you give

:15:06. > :15:13.detail of who captured Colonel Gaddafi and in what nature he was

:15:14. > :15:22.taken? The news that Gaddafi was captured when he was trying to flee

:15:22. > :15:26.from Sirte and motorcade and move immediately to Misrata. This is

:15:26. > :15:32.that I cannot confirm, but it is very big speculation everywhere in

:15:32. > :15:42.Tripoli about that. We talk to some people in Misrata and in Sirte and

:15:42. > :15:45.we have almost one story identical. But as we know, the real news is

:15:45. > :15:49.transferring through the proper channels to the NTC in Benghazi,

:15:49. > :15:54.who are meeting now, and they will come up with a statement of

:15:54. > :16:02.clarification to what happened exactly. The celebration in Tripoli

:16:02. > :16:09.started and we like to caution people to be careful, not to use

:16:09. > :16:13.their guns properly and to celebrate in a civilised way. Are

:16:13. > :16:16.asking everybody to wait for the official statement from Mustafa

:16:16. > :16:22.Abdul Jalil, either to confirm or deny the news. This is the proper

:16:22. > :16:26.way to do. I agree that you are being cautious about the news flow,

:16:26. > :16:30.but I understand that Libyan television is now reporting that

:16:30. > :16:39.Colonel Gaddafi has been killed and his body is being take ton Misrata.

:16:39. > :16:44.Have you heard anything of that? heard such a news, and I said there

:16:44. > :16:49.are various scenarios about that. I am repeating again, we would like

:16:49. > :16:53.to learn from our past lessons. We did some mistakes, jumped to

:16:53. > :16:58.conclusions early in the past. We don't like to do it this time.

:16:58. > :17:01.understand it is noisy where you are, I appreciate you persevering

:17:01. > :17:06.with us. Can you give any information on the nature of the

:17:06. > :17:12.injuries Colonel Gaddafi may have sustained? I don't have this

:17:12. > :17:17.information. There is some speculation also about the killing

:17:17. > :17:24.of the head of the military in Libya. I cannot confirm that. There

:17:24. > :17:31.is many news coming from the Sirte generals, the sudden collapse of

:17:31. > :17:36.the town centre as was a little bit surprising. It was a furious

:17:36. > :17:46.resistance in the last few days. Suddenly our people were able to

:17:46. > :17:55.assert themselves and control in a few hours We'd like to see this

:17:55. > :17:59.force of the revelation. We have to wait for the confirmation. Have you

:17:59. > :18:04.spoken to any international leaders? We have heard from various

:18:04. > :18:14.international leaders commenting on the speculation, have you informed

:18:14. > :18:15.

:18:15. > :18:24.any of the NATO involved countries? It was some reports in the morning

:18:24. > :18:30.that NATO are hitting some targets in Sirte and around Sirte and that

:18:30. > :18:36.strikes might result in something, we cannot confirm it. I think you

:18:36. > :18:39.have the spokesman of the NATO and he can confirm if they were helping

:18:39. > :18:43.any way. Can you tell me if Colonel Gaddafi is still alive, there is

:18:44. > :18:52.speculation, I repeat, that he has been killed, if he is alive, what

:18:52. > :18:57.would be your plan ou next? -- next? The next is the official

:18:57. > :19:02.statement from the NTC of his capture. I'm sure some question

:19:02. > :19:08.will be answered and that occasion. One of them that we are agree on,

:19:08. > :19:12.in the past, and we will confirm it again, that we are giving not

:19:12. > :19:22.Colonel Gaddafi, but everybody will get a fair trial, that Gaddafi

:19:22. > :19:27.never gave to our people. We are going to give him a fair trial.

:19:27. > :19:33.We'd like very much to trial Gaddafi and his associates inside

:19:33. > :19:40.the Libya, by the Libyan justice system. We're going to do that.

:19:40. > :19:45.Would he be tried in Libya? Would that be a safe option? Repeat the

:19:45. > :19:51.question, please? Would he be tried in Libya? Would you be concerned

:19:51. > :19:57.about security? I think we're going to give him fair trial. It will be

:19:57. > :20:02.under the observation of the organisation. We are not going to

:20:02. > :20:07.try him in closed doors. We will try him in public. We are going to

:20:07. > :20:12.guarantee him all the necessity, all the guarantees, the law

:20:12. > :20:18.guarantees that are given to any, to anybody. We'd like very much to

:20:18. > :20:23.try him in Libya and the Libyan people will see -- say the final

:20:23. > :20:29.word of his fate. Who are you waiting for? Who is giving you the

:20:30. > :20:35.information to confirm that Colonel Gaddafi has been captured? I got it

:20:35. > :20:40.from several sources. As I said, many times, that I cannot confirm

:20:40. > :20:44.any of these reports, but it's strong speculation from different

:20:44. > :20:48.various agencies, NTC people are talking to each other now. They are

:20:48. > :20:54.talking to the revolutionary forces. They are talking to the military

:20:54. > :20:59.and civil leadership in Misrata to verify the reports and to make sure

:20:59. > :21:05.that everything will be under control. In a few hours, we're

:21:05. > :21:11.going to have an official statement that will explain everything and

:21:11. > :21:18.confirm or deny speculation. You do expect to give a statement in a

:21:18. > :21:21.matter of hours? Yes. I'm expecting that in a few hours, it will be a

:21:21. > :21:26.statement. Can you also tell me, when it comes to the position of

:21:26. > :21:33.Sirte, have you had confirmation that Gaddafi loyalists have been

:21:33. > :21:40.completely driven out of the town? No, I cannot confirm any of this.

:21:40. > :21:44.OK. Speaking on behalf of the National Transitional Council,

:21:44. > :21:46.thank you very much for bringing us up to date. We appreciate your

:21:46. > :21:51.persevering through all the noise where you are. Thank you very much

:21:51. > :21:56.for giving us the latest. Thank you.

:21:56. > :21:59.Well obviously, the NTC is still being very, very cautious about

:21:59. > :22:04.confirming or denying that Colonel Gaddafi has been captured or, in

:22:04. > :22:08.fact, with the latest rumours, that he has actually died and his body

:22:08. > :22:12.being transported to Misrata. Mark, you were listening in there,

:22:12. > :22:16.understandable caution. Absolutely. It's very interesting that the

:22:16. > :22:19.official spokesman of the NTC would be so cautious and careful. They've

:22:19. > :22:22.had their fingers burnt before. This is the big one, of course.

:22:22. > :22:25.This is the one on which their credibility has been in doubt over

:22:25. > :22:28.the last few months, because they haven't been able to capture

:22:28. > :22:31.Colonel Gaddafi and, of course, once they have got him and indeed,

:22:31. > :22:35.some reports saying that he's been killed, though we can't confirm

:22:35. > :22:37.either of those for the time being, this is the big one. They want

:22:38. > :22:41.their credibility to be in tact. They're being very careful. That's

:22:41. > :22:46.the official spokesman for the NTC. We brought up the question of a

:22:46. > :22:50.trial, if he were alive. He was also quite resolute, it seemed,

:22:50. > :22:55.that it would happen in Libya and security -- Libya and security

:22:55. > :22:59.would not be a problem. Yes, other countries, for example, Liberia,

:22:59. > :23:04.the former leader there, they decide today would be too dangerous

:23:04. > :23:08.to have the trial in the local area. They spent him for trial in The

:23:08. > :23:11.Hague. There, the security could be guaranteed. The politics of the

:23:11. > :23:15.country wouldn't have been churned up, as it's bound to be as

:23:15. > :23:20.revelations take place in a trial, if one takes place. Yes, the

:23:20. > :23:24.official spokesman for the NTC was very clear. He said if he's alive,

:23:24. > :23:28.he'll be tried in Libya. He'll be given all the rights that should be

:23:29. > :23:32.accorded to such a trial. He'll get a fair trial. But it will be in

:23:32. > :23:36.Libya. He was absolutely clear about that. That's interesting.

:23:36. > :23:41.Also we spoke about how actually, let me bring this news, there's

:23:41. > :23:46.been reported on Reuters, Libya's Colonel Gaddafi dies of wounds

:23:46. > :23:49.suffered in capture near Sirte. This is a senior National

:23:49. > :23:53.Transitional Council military official that has spoken to Reuters,

:23:53. > :23:57.to be clear. We were just speaking to a spokesman who couldn't confirm

:23:57. > :24:01.he had either been captured or wound. We did hear reports that he

:24:01. > :24:05.had been wounded in both legs. We did also hear reports that one of

:24:05. > :24:11.his sons and one of his leaders had been captured, one of his leaders

:24:11. > :24:15.had been killed. If this is true, Mark, if we can believe these

:24:15. > :24:21.reports, that Gaddafi has died of these wound, it's drawn a line

:24:21. > :24:24.under the conflict so far and marks a new beginning for the NTC and the

:24:24. > :24:28.future of Libya. If Gaddafi has died, it certainly marks the

:24:28. > :24:32.beginning of a new phase. That's for certain. Because it means that

:24:32. > :24:36.the NTC now have effective control of the whole country. Thank you

:24:36. > :24:41.very much. Let me just recap what has happened in the last hour. We

:24:41. > :24:45.have had news that Colonel Gaddafi, the former leader of Libya, has

:24:45. > :24:48.been captured. There are latest rumours he has died of wounds

:24:48. > :24:54.sustained in that capture near Sirte. He was reportedly had wounds
