0:00:06 > 0:00:06Hello.

0:00:06 > 0:00:08How safe is your credit card?

0:00:08 > 0:00:11Tonight we are on the trail of the fraudsters out to get

0:00:11 > 0:00:13their hands on your cash.

0:00:13 > 0:00:15I'd like to ask you a couple of questions actually about your

0:00:15 > 0:00:17involvement in a chip and pin fraud.

0:00:17 > 0:00:20We track down the man who wants to clone your card.

0:00:20 > 0:00:26Are you making a lot of money out of it?

0:00:26 > 0:00:27I actually feel sick right now.

0:00:27 > 0:00:30Sally's sugar rush but can she quit the white stuff?

0:00:30 > 0:00:33People are losing limbs through diabetes.

0:00:33 > 0:00:38And Des Coleman sets the bush craft world on fire.

0:00:38 > 0:00:40Ow!

0:00:40 > 0:00:44The stories that matter closer to home.

0:00:44 > 0:00:46This is Inside Out East Midlands.

0:00:58 > 0:00:59First tonight, credit card fraud.

0:00:59 > 0:01:02When chip and pin machines replaced our signature in shops, we were

0:01:02 > 0:01:06promised they would help to protect us but an Inside Out investigation

0:01:06 > 0:01:09has discovered that criminal gangs are using specially`adapted machines

0:01:09 > 0:01:14to steal our bank details and then our cash.

0:01:14 > 0:01:18For the last nine months, we've been working undercover to gain access to

0:01:18 > 0:01:21a fraudster with global connections.

0:01:21 > 0:01:24And tonight, in Jonathan Gibson's exclusive report, we confront him.

0:01:28 > 0:01:32It's Friday night and for most of us the weekend has started.

0:01:32 > 0:01:35Me included.

0:01:36 > 0:01:38A few drinks and some food out.

0:01:38 > 0:01:44And, if like me you've never got cash, a card comes in handy.

0:01:47 > 0:01:48For ten years now, we've all been using these.

0:01:48 > 0:01:52Chip and pin machines.

0:01:52 > 0:01:58And the place I've come for dinner is no different.

0:01:58 > 0:02:00Remember when we used to sign for things in shops?

0:02:00 > 0:02:07The banks told us chip and pin would be much safer.

0:02:07 > 0:02:09Well, try telling Leila from Nottingham that.

0:02:09 > 0:02:12She found out her card had been cloned when she was made to leave

0:02:12 > 0:02:14her shopping at the checkout.

0:02:14 > 0:02:17I just thought I have got money in there and I just didn't know why

0:02:18 > 0:02:23it was being declined.

0:02:23 > 0:02:24I couldn't understand it.

0:02:24 > 0:02:26My card was obviously cloned.

0:02:26 > 0:02:34Really horrible, the thought that somebody else can access your money

0:02:35 > 0:02:35through your chip and pin card.

0:02:35 > 0:02:37The bank gave Leila her money back.

0:02:37 > 0:02:43But a quick look online shows there are many more victims.

0:02:43 > 0:02:45That's the thing with the Internet, there are the good people

0:02:45 > 0:02:50on there like innocent victims and then there are the bad.

0:02:50 > 0:02:53I'm talking to a man who knows all about stolen numbers.

0:02:53 > 0:02:58Because he steals them and he's looking for a new partner.

0:02:58 > 0:03:01Why not?

0:03:01 > 0:03:05Funnily enough, I haven't mentioned I'm a journalist.

0:03:05 > 0:03:06He thinks I own a restaurant with card`paying

0:03:06 > 0:03:12customers but I need to gain his trust and that's taking months.

0:03:12 > 0:03:16But one day he tells me of parcels in the post.

0:03:18 > 0:03:21It's a chip and pin machine.

0:03:22 > 0:03:25I've already spent months gaining this criminal's confidence but he

0:03:25 > 0:03:28still doesn't trust me completely.

0:03:28 > 0:03:31He's finally agreed to chat but is banking on staying anonymous

0:03:31 > 0:03:34over the Internet.

0:03:34 > 0:03:41We will see about that.

0:03:41 > 0:03:43COMPUTER VOICE:

0:03:43 > 0:03:44Press F1 then one.

0:03:44 > 0:03:47He tells me the machine he sent me remembers people's card numbers.

0:03:47 > 0:03:49Once you swipe it, the data has already been saved

0:03:49 > 0:03:50from the first swipe.

0:03:50 > 0:03:54Then enter the pin, the pin is stored

0:03:54 > 0:03:55and now all the data is there.

0:03:55 > 0:03:57That's everything he needs to steal people's cash.

0:03:57 > 0:03:59Do it how the restaurant's receipt looks cos it's fully customisable.

0:03:59 > 0:04:02He's told me to put this error message on the bottom

0:04:02 > 0:04:06of the receipt so my customers will think the machine is not working.

0:04:06 > 0:04:10That is so I can swap it for my normal one to take

0:04:10 > 0:04:13their real payment.

0:04:13 > 0:04:17What I now need to work out is a way of putting that to the test.

0:04:17 > 0:04:20And I think I've found the answer.

0:04:20 > 0:04:22Pay`as`you`go debit cards.

0:04:22 > 0:04:26They are a bit like mobile phone top`ups.

0:04:26 > 0:04:28You can only spend what you put on them.

0:04:28 > 0:04:31I have bought 20 to try out.

0:04:31 > 0:04:36I need him to think they belong to my customers but will it work?

0:04:36 > 0:04:43He has told me I will need to download the data using some

0:04:43 > 0:04:44cables he sent me in the post.

0:04:44 > 0:04:44Can you just plug that into your laptop?

0:04:44 > 0:04:47A couple more connections and we are ready to rock.

0:04:47 > 0:04:48Is it downloading?

0:04:48 > 0:04:50Yes, it's receiving stuff.

0:04:50 > 0:04:54Yeah, OK, when it's done downloading, just send me that file.

0:04:54 > 0:04:55That's how you download.

0:04:55 > 0:04:57Look at this, he just e`mailed me through

0:04:57 > 0:05:02the rest of the card numbers.

0:05:02 > 0:05:04And the pins that go with them.

0:05:04 > 0:05:06These cards here.

0:05:06 > 0:05:10In a couple of minutes, he's got everything he needs to make exact

0:05:10 > 0:05:16copies of all these cards, which he can then use in cashpoints.

0:05:16 > 0:05:22And he says he's done that already time and time again.

0:05:22 > 0:05:25What will the banks think?

0:05:25 > 0:05:28I think the encouraging thing is that these frauds are very rare.

0:05:28 > 0:05:31We've only seen one recent instance of it and we are seeing convictions

0:05:31 > 0:05:34in the Old Bailey in respect of that at the moment.

0:05:34 > 0:05:38We know the existing advice to consumers is to protect your pin.

0:05:38 > 0:05:41With something like that there's no point because it's the device

0:05:41 > 0:05:45itself which takes the pin number.

0:05:45 > 0:05:47The first reassurance to give everybody when it comes to this type

0:05:47 > 0:05:52of fraud, which is a very rare type of crime, is that even if you are

0:05:52 > 0:05:56the victim of it, you will receive a full refund of all of your losses,

0:05:56 > 0:06:00but with this type of fraud, in common with other ones as well,

0:06:00 > 0:06:05we always advise consumers to check their statements.

0:06:05 > 0:06:07I'm about to do just that.

0:06:07 > 0:06:10As all the pay`as`you`go debit cards are in my name it also means I can

0:06:10 > 0:06:12check what's happening to them.

0:06:12 > 0:06:13Take these two for example.

0:06:13 > 0:06:15They've never left my wallet but according to

0:06:15 > 0:06:22the transaction history they've been emptied of cash in the Philippines.

0:06:22 > 0:06:26So either he's stealing my money or someone he knows is.

0:06:26 > 0:06:29But he has also sent me a second machine so

0:06:29 > 0:06:30at least he's not suspicious.

0:06:30 > 0:06:33But who is he?

0:06:33 > 0:06:34He is taking cash out in the Philippines

0:06:34 > 0:06:36but the machines came from Britain.

0:06:36 > 0:06:41I've also sent money to Canada for the cables he is posted.

0:06:41 > 0:06:42I'm not sure that's really helped.

0:06:42 > 0:06:46He could be on either side of the world.

0:06:46 > 0:06:47OK, time to change tactics.

0:06:47 > 0:06:52How about I tell him I've broken the machine.

0:06:52 > 0:06:55I'm hoping he will ask me to send it for repair.

0:06:55 > 0:06:59And if he trusts me enough, he might meet give me an address.

0:06:59 > 0:07:01It might not be his, of course.

0:07:01 > 0:07:02Bingo.

0:07:02 > 0:07:05He's taken the bait, telling me to send it to

0:07:05 > 0:07:06Marcus Montague in Canada.

0:07:06 > 0:07:10He's the guy I paid for the cables but this is one

0:07:10 > 0:07:13parcel I plan to deliver by hand.

0:07:14 > 0:07:16Bags packed, passports checked.

0:07:16 > 0:07:20Let's go find him.

0:07:27 > 0:07:28Toronto, Canada.

0:07:28 > 0:07:33I'm heading out of town 25 miles along the freeway to Pickering.

0:07:35 > 0:07:38Is the guy that we've been given the address for the guy that's been

0:07:38 > 0:07:43on Skype that we've been talking to for months now?

0:07:43 > 0:07:50But there's only one way to be sure and that means me playing postie.

0:07:50 > 0:07:51Yes, we're happy to help at TRN Couriers.

0:07:51 > 0:07:55OK, so the accent needs work but I'm hoping uniform will shine.

0:07:55 > 0:08:00We put a tracker inside the machine and I'm wearing a secret camera.

0:08:03 > 0:08:10Right, mate.

0:08:15 > 0:08:18Yes, it's Marcus Montague and he signed

0:08:19 > 0:08:20our fake delivery note to prove it.

0:08:20 > 0:08:23So it's time to confront him.

0:08:27 > 0:08:30Don't hit him.

0:08:37 > 0:08:43Courier delivery.

0:08:43 > 0:08:43Stay back.

0:08:43 > 0:08:45Montague, I got a delivery for you, mate.

0:08:45 > 0:08:46Delivery for you.

0:08:46 > 0:08:49No, I can't accept if I don't know about it.

0:08:49 > 0:08:50OK.

0:08:50 > 0:08:51It's time to come clean.

0:08:51 > 0:08:52Actually, I'm from the BBC.

0:08:52 > 0:08:54BBC television in the UK.

0:08:54 > 0:08:58I'd like to ask you a couple of questions about your involvement

0:08:58 > 0:08:59in a chip and pin fraud.

0:08:59 > 0:09:00Chip and pin fraud.

0:09:00 > 0:09:04Do you know about it?

0:09:04 > 0:09:04No.

0:09:04 > 0:09:05I think you do.

0:09:05 > 0:09:07We have been sending deliveries to your address

0:09:07 > 0:09:08and you have been taking them.

0:09:08 > 0:09:10No, I haven't.

0:09:10 > 0:09:10Don't go away, mate.

0:09:10 > 0:09:17We're asking you a few questions.

0:09:17 > 0:09:19Don't run us over.

0:09:19 > 0:09:20I don't know what's going on here.

0:09:20 > 0:09:23What's your involvement with chip and pin fraud?

0:09:23 > 0:09:25Who are you actually involved with then?

0:09:25 > 0:09:26Tell me.

0:09:26 > 0:09:28Who are you actually working with?

0:09:28 > 0:09:31Are you making a lot of money out of it?

0:09:34 > 0:09:39Well, not many answers.

0:09:39 > 0:09:43Raised a few more questions perhaps.

0:09:43 > 0:09:48Whatever the case, he wasn't very keen to hang around, was he?

0:09:49 > 0:09:52I think that's probably the last we'll see of him.

0:09:52 > 0:09:53At least for now.

0:09:55 > 0:09:59Can I have couple of pounds of plums and some apples as well.

0:09:59 > 0:10:03Back home and still on the market for answers but

0:10:03 > 0:10:08VeriFone which makes the machines doesn't want to be interviewed.

0:10:08 > 0:10:10I wanted to show them our evidence.

0:10:10 > 0:10:12It decided on a statement.

0:10:12 > 0:10:15VeriFone says the fraud is not a result of tampering with VeriFone

0:10:15 > 0:10:17devices.

0:10:17 > 0:10:19And requires the collusion of two criminals.

0:10:19 > 0:10:21The company says it takes the security

0:10:21 > 0:10:23of consumer data very seriously.

0:10:23 > 0:10:25It works with authorities to uncover fraud

0:10:25 > 0:10:28and its machines are not to blame.

0:10:28 > 0:10:32Put your pin in, please, mate.

0:10:32 > 0:10:37You know what, mate, I think I'll leave it.

0:10:41 > 0:10:44Now, it's been called the new tobacco, even a poison.

0:10:44 > 0:10:45It's this stuff, sugar.

0:10:45 > 0:10:47And we're eating far too much of it.

0:10:47 > 0:10:51In fact, some experts say we're already paying with our health.

0:10:51 > 0:10:58So how hard it could be to live on a virtually sugarfree diet from month?

0:10:58 > 0:10:59BBC Derby's Sally Pepper thinks she's pretty healthy.

0:10:59 > 0:11:03Could she do it?

0:11:03 > 0:11:06# sweets for my sweet, sugar for my honey,

0:11:06 > 0:11:09# your sugar kiss thrills me so.

0:11:09 > 0:11:15ANNOUNCER:

0:11:15 > 0:11:17Sally Pepper on BBC Radio Derby.

0:11:17 > 0:11:18Good morning.

0:11:18 > 0:11:20It's Monday morning.

0:11:20 > 0:11:21I've had a fabulous weekend which has consisted mainly

0:11:21 > 0:11:24of stuffing my face with some delicious foodie treats.

0:11:24 > 0:11:26Because of midday today, I'm going virtually sugar`free

0:11:26 > 0:11:30for the next four weeks.

0:11:30 > 0:11:32I know, why did I sign up for that?

0:11:35 > 0:11:41Well, because before too long, we could all face a sugar challenge.

0:11:41 > 0:11:42With worries that too much sugar is fuelling obesity,

0:11:42 > 0:11:45heart problems and diabetes, the Government is considering slashing

0:11:45 > 0:11:52the recommended daily intake of sugar from 12 teaspoons to six.

0:11:53 > 0:12:03The office seems divided on my chances of meeting this challenge.

0:12:03 > 0:12:04Sally can not bear to lose.

0:12:04 > 0:12:08She can't lose an argument with me, she can't lose a challenge

0:12:08 > 0:12:09from the team.

0:12:09 > 0:12:11Good luck.

0:12:11 > 0:12:11Seriously.

0:12:11 > 0:12:12Are you going to join me?

0:12:12 > 0:12:16No.

0:12:16 > 0:12:18Not only is the office going to be watching me, but doctors

0:12:18 > 0:12:22at the Royal Derby Hospital will be monitoring my progress too.

0:12:22 > 0:12:27Here they know all about the problems of excess sugar.

0:12:27 > 0:12:30Recent evidence has suggested that the increased intake

0:12:30 > 0:12:35of refined sugar is responsible for the increased prevalence of diabetes

0:12:35 > 0:12:38and diabetes is a major killer.

0:12:38 > 0:12:43After a few tests, I'm given the all clear to start the diet.

0:12:43 > 0:12:44Was that painful?

0:12:44 > 0:12:45A little sharp.

0:12:45 > 0:12:46It's all right.

0:12:46 > 0:12:48I'm not looking, though.

0:12:51 > 0:12:53Just over 40 minutes to go.

0:12:53 > 0:12:56Time for some last`minute indulgence.

0:12:56 > 0:13:00Here at Radio Derby we have something called the table of love.

0:13:00 > 0:13:02A desk crammed with sugary treats.

0:13:02 > 0:13:05Today, they have gone overboard.

0:13:05 > 0:13:06There's loads on here.

0:13:06 > 0:13:09Look at this.

0:13:09 > 0:13:12I feel sick.

0:13:12 > 0:13:16I actually feel sick right now.

0:13:16 > 0:13:17I said it started at midday and that's it.

0:13:17 > 0:13:19Here we are, 12:03.

0:13:19 > 0:13:26For the next four weeks, I have very little sugar I can consume each day.

0:13:26 > 0:13:30# Sugar in the morning, sugar in the evening, sugar at supper time #.

0:13:30 > 0:13:34After just a few days on the diet, I've already discovered two rascals

0:13:34 > 0:13:41within my own family who seem determined to scupper my chances.

0:13:41 > 0:13:42Look how difficult this is going to be.

0:13:42 > 0:13:45I've got these two boys who will be stuffing their faces with sweets,

0:13:45 > 0:13:49cakes and chocolates and biscuits and ice cream and mummy is not

0:13:49 > 0:13:52allowed anything for four weeks?

0:13:52 > 0:13:55You can have this.

0:13:57 > 0:13:58Day five.

0:13:58 > 0:13:59I'm getting grumpy.

0:13:59 > 0:14:04I'm fed up of thinking about what I can and can't eat.

0:14:09 > 0:14:13It's the hidden sugars in packets, sauces, ready meals and drinks that

0:14:13 > 0:14:15could really trip me up.

0:14:15 > 0:14:16Look at this cola.

0:14:16 > 0:14:21A 750 mil cola.

0:14:21 > 0:14:23You're talking 13 teaspoons of sugar.

0:14:23 > 0:14:25When you look at your 25 grams you are supposed to

0:14:25 > 0:14:29have, that's over half the amount of sugar n the glass.

0:14:29 > 0:14:34I think we'll get rid of that.

0:14:34 > 0:14:36Switch to water but avoid that flavoured stuff.

0:14:36 > 0:14:39They look so innocent, just touch of lime, and yet lurking in that

0:14:39 > 0:14:44one bottle is ten teaspoons of sugar and yet making a simple swap to

0:14:44 > 0:14:50just water from the tap, adding your own juice of lemon and lime, you get

0:14:50 > 0:14:52a nice extra zing but no sugar.

0:15:02 > 0:15:03The food and drink industry say they are listening.

0:15:03 > 0:15:06The sugar that is present in products is there for a reason.

0:15:06 > 0:15:14And where it is possible to reduce sugar with a calorie reduction as

0:15:14 > 0:15:15part of the process, companies have already taken these steps and will

0:15:15 > 0:15:21continue to go down this route.

0:15:21 > 0:15:23The industry absolutely on the back foot about sugar.

0:15:24 > 0:15:24Sugar, the science is solid.

0:15:24 > 0:15:27Public opinion is solid.

0:15:27 > 0:15:31Sugar alone contributes 10 or even 20% of calories that

0:15:31 > 0:15:33people consume in a day.

0:15:33 > 0:15:35And to halve that amount would actually reverse

0:15:35 > 0:15:41the obesity epidemic.

0:15:44 > 0:15:48Well, mostly I'm doing well but everyone has bad days

0:15:48 > 0:15:51and word seems to have got around.

0:15:51 > 0:15:55There is this very vicious rumour that a pizza might have

0:15:55 > 0:15:56been illegally consumed.

0:15:56 > 0:15:59I can't resist.

0:15:59 > 0:16:01I've done a run, I've earned it.

0:16:01 > 0:16:06I'm going to eat it and I don't care how much sugar is in there.

0:16:06 > 0:16:09There is four teaspoons of sugar in a pizza.

0:16:09 > 0:16:12Oops!

0:16:12 > 0:16:14Halfway through the challenge and it's back to the hospital.

0:16:14 > 0:16:17I've got a few questions for the doctors.

0:16:17 > 0:16:21I'm getting real need and pangs for chocolate that actually I

0:16:21 > 0:16:22wasn't getting before.

0:16:22 > 0:16:25Is that normal?

0:16:25 > 0:16:27It's sugar craving.

0:16:27 > 0:16:29That's well`recognised when people stop eating sugar for a bit.

0:16:29 > 0:16:32But hopefully, that will resolve.

0:16:32 > 0:16:36I'm doing this for four weeks as my challenge, but there is a serious

0:16:36 > 0:16:38message behind this, isn't there?

0:16:38 > 0:16:39That's right.

0:16:39 > 0:16:41Diabetes is on the rise.

0:16:41 > 0:16:44For these diabetic patients, all on strict diets, I discovered

0:16:44 > 0:16:47there's a lot at stake.

0:16:47 > 0:16:50Your sight could go.

0:16:50 > 0:16:53You could lose your feet, your legs.

0:16:53 > 0:16:55Everything.

0:16:55 > 0:16:57People are losing limbs through diabetes and again,

0:16:58 > 0:16:58that's the fear that you have.

0:16:58 > 0:17:02So cake is your nemesis?

0:17:02 > 0:17:03I love cake.

0:17:03 > 0:17:06Which would have lots of sugar in it.

0:17:06 > 0:17:07Which has a lot of sugar in.

0:17:07 > 0:17:12Yes, the dried fruit.

0:17:12 > 0:17:12I only have a little slice at weekends.

0:17:15 > 0:17:19Back home, I'm getting pretty good at ditching all those takeaways

0:17:19 > 0:17:21and packet meals.

0:17:21 > 0:17:24And there we have it.

0:17:24 > 0:17:25Seared salmon on a bed of sweet potato mash.

0:17:25 > 0:17:28And home`made ratatouille.

0:17:28 > 0:17:33It took just 20 minutes and if we just try it...

0:17:37 > 0:17:42Pretty delicious even if I do say so myself.

0:17:42 > 0:17:44And virtually sugar`free.

0:17:44 > 0:17:47I am so excited.

0:17:47 > 0:17:49This is my final evening.

0:17:49 > 0:17:57Tomorrow the sugar challenge ends.

0:17:57 > 0:18:00Honestly, my stomach is rumbling in anticipation.

0:18:00 > 0:18:04I think it was harder for us than it was for Sally to be honest.

0:18:04 > 0:18:07She's a little bit tetchy a couple of times to the point that

0:18:07 > 0:18:11I was trying to feed her sugar.

0:18:12 > 0:18:15Yay!

0:18:15 > 0:18:17It's midday!

0:18:17 > 0:18:20I'm done.

0:18:20 > 0:18:21Bring the chocolate in.

0:18:21 > 0:18:22No, I'm not sharing.

0:18:22 > 0:18:26They are all for me.

0:18:26 > 0:18:30So good.

0:18:30 > 0:18:35I thought I was going to need one of these the other day

0:18:35 > 0:18:36after bingeing once the sugar`free diet had finished,

0:18:36 > 0:18:37I didn't sleep well that night.

0:18:37 > 0:18:39I had a terrible headache.

0:18:39 > 0:18:47I feel much better now and I'm here to get the final results.

0:18:47 > 0:18:48And they are pretty amazing.

0:18:48 > 0:18:51Overall, the cholesterol profile has improved over the past four weeks.

0:18:51 > 0:18:54Are you surprised by these changes in such a short amount of time?

0:18:54 > 0:18:57I was a bit surprised because four weeks is

0:18:57 > 0:18:59a short time and you generally lead a healthy life as well.

0:18:59 > 0:19:02But that's good.

0:19:02 > 0:19:09# Sugar mama, sugar mama, sugar mamma, please come back to me #.

0:19:09 > 0:19:13So if I was to continue this challenge, in 12 months I would have

0:19:13 > 0:19:15cut out the equivalent of this amount of sugar.

0:19:15 > 0:19:17Quite staggering really.

0:19:17 > 0:19:22I do feel really quite healthy so I'm quite tempted to carry on.

0:19:22 > 0:19:25Mind you, one cake wouldn't hurt, would it?

0:19:34 > 0:19:37Oh my God, that's so big.

0:19:42 > 0:19:46Looks like Sally's got her taste back for sugar quite nicely there.

0:19:46 > 0:19:47Finally tonight, living off the land, sleeping under

0:19:48 > 0:19:52the stars, cooking on an open fire.

0:19:52 > 0:19:53Perhaps doesn't sound like everyone's idea

0:19:53 > 0:19:56of weekend fun but apparently wilderness training is all

0:19:56 > 0:19:59the rage here in the East Midlands.

0:19:59 > 0:20:04So how will city slicker Des Coleman cope without his home comforts?

0:20:06 > 0:20:08I've been told that this weekend is all about experiencing

0:20:08 > 0:20:11the great outdoors so, like a boy scout, I'm going to be prepared so

0:20:11 > 0:20:18I've come here to get kitted out and I ain't leaving anything to chance.

0:20:18 > 0:20:22This place in Nottingham is packed full of surplus army supplies

0:20:22 > 0:20:26so it should have everything I need for a weekend in the wild.

0:20:26 > 0:20:29What is a good thing to protect me from all of the bad weather and

0:20:29 > 0:20:33all the bugs because I hate bugs?

0:20:33 > 0:20:35OK, I can get you something like a mosquito net that will go over your

0:20:35 > 0:20:39hat and it will tuck into your neck and that will keep the bugs off you.

0:20:39 > 0:20:47It won't look great, but you're not going to get bit.

0:20:47 > 0:20:50Not sure if I'm going to need this.

0:20:50 > 0:20:52I think it's more bank robber than bush craft.

0:20:52 > 0:20:55You're probably right there.

0:20:55 > 0:20:57How's that?

0:20:57 > 0:20:58Yeah, that's looking good.

0:20:58 > 0:21:04Yeah?

0:21:04 > 0:21:06Looking the part proper now.

0:21:06 > 0:21:08Des is going to do really well.

0:21:08 > 0:21:09We've kitted him out with everything he needs.

0:21:09 > 0:21:12For the finishing touches, we've got some matches, a compass,

0:21:12 > 0:21:14a hand warmer, a rain poncho.

0:21:14 > 0:21:17If all else fails, we've even got him a survival blanket.

0:21:17 > 0:21:19A little later, I'm visiting the UK's Bush Craft Show which is

0:21:20 > 0:21:22on every year in Derbyshire.

0:21:22 > 0:21:26But first, I'm heading to the Vale of Belvoir in Leicestershire.

0:21:26 > 0:21:30I'm joining a group of southern city slickers who are paying good

0:21:30 > 0:21:33money to rough it in the wild.

0:21:33 > 0:21:36I'm meeting bush craft instructor Jason.

0:21:36 > 0:21:38Jason, how are you doing?

0:21:38 > 0:21:41Hello, Des, I didn't see coming with all the camouflage on there.

0:21:41 > 0:21:43I feel a bit overdressed.

0:21:43 > 0:21:46Welcome to the Belvoir Castle estate.

0:21:46 > 0:21:48As you can see, we've already started.

0:21:48 > 0:21:51We are shelter building this morning.

0:21:51 > 0:21:54First priority for your survival, so I think we'd best crack on.

0:21:54 > 0:21:57Sure.

0:21:57 > 0:22:02So Jason, what I want to know is, what is bush craft?

0:22:02 > 0:22:03Yeah, big question.

0:22:03 > 0:22:07For me, it's about making yourself comfortable

0:22:07 > 0:22:08in the great outdoors but doing it in a sustainable manner,

0:22:08 > 0:22:13so that the resources are there for the future generations as well.

0:22:13 > 0:22:15So what type of people want to take up bush craft courses?

0:22:16 > 0:22:18We get all sorts.

0:22:18 > 0:22:21We do school groups and we do stag dos and hen dos etc,

0:22:21 > 0:22:26but the main thrust of the business is adults, individuals booking on.

0:22:26 > 0:22:28People coming from the cities, maybe wanting to re`engage with

0:22:28 > 0:22:31the natural world and reconnect.

0:22:31 > 0:22:36I think the next thing you'll be telling me, Jason,

0:22:36 > 0:22:36is you're going to want me to...

0:22:36 > 0:22:38Hold on, it's not working...

0:22:38 > 0:22:42Make some fire.

0:22:45 > 0:22:47I wouldn't normally do this with ordinary clients, but Des is

0:22:47 > 0:22:51a bit of a special one for us.

0:22:51 > 0:22:55I'm going to go through his rucksack and make sure he's

0:22:55 > 0:22:59getting a complete authentic bush craft experience.

0:22:59 > 0:23:01Oh dear.

0:23:01 > 0:23:05I think we can find a natural alternative for that one, I think.

0:23:05 > 0:23:06Donation to the instructors' camp, I think.

0:23:06 > 0:23:10Wonderful, thank you very much, Des.

0:23:10 > 0:23:13He has stashed so much food in here.

0:23:13 > 0:23:15Did he think that I wasn't going to feed him?

0:23:15 > 0:23:17Well, it's pretty obvious he hasn't done

0:23:17 > 0:23:22that much manual labour in the past but leave him with me for a couple

0:23:22 > 0:23:23of hours and we will sort out.

0:23:23 > 0:23:26Besides shelter building, woodland cooking is a big part

0:23:26 > 0:23:28of the weekend.

0:23:28 > 0:23:30I don't cook at all.

0:23:30 > 0:23:31I'm not cooking your lunch.

0:23:31 > 0:23:33No?

0:23:33 > 0:23:38It's over to you.

0:23:38 > 0:23:45It doesn't matter if you do leave the kidney in.

0:23:45 > 0:23:45Cut gently through the skin, be careful where

0:23:45 > 0:23:46your thumb is close to the blade.

0:23:46 > 0:23:48Bush craft has really taken off in the East Midlands and now there's

0:23:48 > 0:23:50a fair few companies offering a taste of our great outdoors.

0:23:50 > 0:23:54And one of the real draws is spending a night under the stars.

0:23:54 > 0:23:58Our shelter is very nearly ready.

0:23:58 > 0:24:01I can see a lot of daylight at the moment.

0:24:01 > 0:24:03When it's completed, though, how waterproof is it?

0:24:03 > 0:24:08Depends on the thatching material but if you go about an arm's depth,

0:24:08 > 0:24:09you will be totally waterproof.

0:24:09 > 0:24:12Definitely everyone sleeps better on the second night in one

0:24:12 > 0:24:14of these natural shelters.

0:24:14 > 0:24:15Jonathan, what brings you down?

0:24:15 > 0:24:19Basically, I work in an office for my sins.

0:24:19 > 0:24:21Every now and again you have to come back outside,

0:24:21 > 0:24:22reconnect with the outdoors.

0:24:22 > 0:24:25I'm an outdoors person.

0:24:25 > 0:24:27I sit at a desk all day.

0:24:27 > 0:24:29I try to cycle to work but it's not quite enough

0:24:29 > 0:24:37of the outdoors time so every now and again you have to come and build

0:24:37 > 0:24:38a few shelters, listen to the birds, see what animals you find.

0:24:38 > 0:24:42Just have a bit of me time.

0:24:42 > 0:24:45I've left camp for a little bit and come over to rainy Derbyshire.

0:24:45 > 0:24:48I'm at the UK's Bush Craft Show at Catton Hall.

0:24:48 > 0:24:51This type of tourism has become big business across the East Midlands,

0:24:51 > 0:24:55so if you're thinking of booking a wild weekend or simply

0:24:55 > 0:25:01enjoying one of the many woodland workshops, this is the place to be.

0:25:02 > 0:25:06Guys, I can tell by your accents you're not from around these parts.

0:25:06 > 0:25:07That's right, we're from Belfast.

0:25:07 > 0:25:09Have you come all the way from there just for this event?

0:25:09 > 0:25:12That's right, we travelled through the night, lots of train delays

0:25:12 > 0:25:15and everything but we made it here.

0:25:15 > 0:25:1711 o'clock.

0:25:17 > 0:25:21Does it surprise you that there are so many people

0:25:21 > 0:25:22that love doing bush craft?

0:25:22 > 0:25:26I think everyone, you know, from when you are a child, being in the

0:25:26 > 0:25:32woods, getting sticks and that kind of tying things together building

0:25:32 > 0:25:36a den from whatever you can find, I think it's an exciting things.

0:25:36 > 0:25:42I don't think you ever lose that really as you get older.

0:25:42 > 0:25:43Bush craft is all about living in harmony with nature.

0:25:43 > 0:25:45It's not who's got the biggest knife and jumping

0:25:45 > 0:25:48off mountains and the rest of it.

0:25:48 > 0:25:51It's learning to live with your environment.

0:25:51 > 0:25:54Back at camp, I'm about to get to grips with the most

0:25:54 > 0:25:58important of all bush craft skills.

0:25:58 > 0:26:00I take it, Jason, this is one of the reasons why

0:26:00 > 0:26:02a lot of people come on the course?

0:26:02 > 0:26:04Yeah, this is the quintessential bush craft skill

0:26:04 > 0:26:07that everybody wants to learn.

0:26:07 > 0:26:11And, let's face it, if you can make fire from nothing,

0:26:11 > 0:26:11how amazing a feeling can be?

0:26:11 > 0:26:13I can't wait to have a go.

0:26:13 > 0:26:15Keep it steady.

0:26:15 > 0:26:17Lean it against your leg.

0:26:17 > 0:26:18That's better.

0:26:18 > 0:26:19Don't force it.

0:26:19 > 0:26:21Keep your back steady.

0:26:21 > 0:26:26Just increase your speed ever so slightly.

0:26:31 > 0:26:32Yes!

0:26:32 > 0:26:36Slowly squeeze it together.

0:26:42 > 0:26:45Ow!

0:26:47 > 0:26:51There's not many people on the planet that have done that

0:26:51 > 0:26:57and it's warm fire as well.

0:26:57 > 0:26:57Well done.

0:27:05 > 0:27:11You just scoffed some rabbit, haven't you?

0:27:11 > 0:27:12I have scoffed some rabbit, yes.

0:27:12 > 0:27:13What was that like?

0:27:13 > 0:27:16It was delicious.

0:27:16 > 0:27:17Thumper tasted good.

0:27:17 > 0:27:18The nights are drawing in and it's getting cold.

0:27:18 > 0:27:19Are you prepared?

0:27:19 > 0:27:21Absolutely, it's the best bit.

0:27:21 > 0:27:24What about the noises?

0:27:24 > 0:27:30Last night there were quite a few noises.

0:27:30 > 0:27:32Weren't you tempted to sneak into somebody else's tent?

0:27:32 > 0:27:33I'm a big strapping man.

0:27:33 > 0:27:38Can I come into yours then?

0:27:43 > 0:27:45Oh!

0:27:46 > 0:27:52When the daylight came, I felt a sense of empowerment.

0:27:52 > 0:27:54I felt a sense of achievement.

0:27:54 > 0:27:57I felt I had done it and a massive smile came over

0:27:57 > 0:28:00my face and I am going to walk down the street with a swagger.

0:28:00 > 0:28:02A bigger swagger than I've already got.

0:28:02 > 0:28:05And one of the main things is being able to

0:28:05 > 0:28:11build a shelter and make fire!

0:28:11 > 0:28:12So, there we have it.

0:28:12 > 0:28:14I have created my own shelter from scratch, made fire from rubbing

0:28:14 > 0:28:20two sticks together, and cooked my own bread and wild trout.

0:28:20 > 0:28:25It was a great experience and a very different way to spend the weekend.

0:28:25 > 0:28:28I have drawn the line at washing in the wild.

0:28:28 > 0:28:30I'm off home to have a nice hot bath.

0:28:32 > 0:28:35I think he's earned it, don't you?

0:28:35 > 0:28:37And that's it from Nottingham for this week.

0:28:39 > 0:28:47Next Monday, the dangers of deer, but do we need a nationwide cull?

0:28:47 > 0:28:51It is emotive and it is sad to have to shoot wild animals but what we're

0:28:51 > 0:28:54trying to do is create balance.

0:29:06 > 0:29:09Hello, I'm Ellie Crisell with your 90 Second Update.

0:29:09 > 0:29:12The parents of seriously ill Ashya King are tonight in a Spanish

0:29:12 > 0:29:15jail as they fight extradition.
