:01:09. > :01:11.First, do you remember when chip and pin machines replaced
:01:12. > :01:17.in shops, we were told it'd help to protect us from fratd, but
:01:18. > :01:18.an Inside Out investigation has revealed that
:01:19. > :01:26.adapted equipment to steal our bank details and our money.
:01:27. > :01:29.For the last nine months, wd've been working undercover to get to a
:01:30. > :01:36.In Jonathan Gibson's exclusive report ` we confront him.
:01:37. > :01:39.It's Friday night, and for lost of us, the weekend has started.
:01:40. > :01:53.If, like me, you have never got cash, a card comes in handy.
:01:54. > :02:00.For ten years now, we have `ll been using these ` chip and pin lachines.
:02:01. > :02:06.And the place I've come for dinner is no different.
:02:07. > :02:08.Remember when we used to sign for things in shops?
:02:09. > :02:14.The banks told us chip and pin would be much safer.
:02:15. > :02:20.Her card details were stolen at a garage.
:02:21. > :02:25.The card was cloned using a machine that cloned it, and also thdre was a
:02:26. > :02:36.video camera setup to record the PIN number being put into the m`chine.
:02:37. > :02:39.So they got two lots of information, and ?400 was taken out
:02:40. > :02:41.on a couple of occasions in Malaysia from our bank account.
:02:42. > :02:49.But a quick look online shows there are many more victims.
:02:50. > :02:55.There are the good people on there, like the innocent victims,
:02:56. > :03:00.I am talking to a man who knows all about stolen numbers.
:03:01. > :03:15.Funnily enough, I haven't mentioned I'm a journalist.
:03:16. > :03:17.He thinks I own a restaurant with card customers.
:03:18. > :03:20.But I need to gain his trust, and that is taking months.
:03:21. > :03:26.But one day, he tells me a parcel is in the post.
:03:27. > :03:32.I have spent months gaining this criminal's
:03:33. > :03:36.confidence, but he still dods not trust me completely.
:03:37. > :03:39.He has finally agreed to ch`t, but he is banking on staying
:03:40. > :03:53.He tells me the machine he has sent me remembers people's card numbers.
:03:54. > :04:01.Once you swipe it, the data has been saved
:04:02. > :04:04.from the first swipe, and the PIN is stored and now that is there
:04:05. > :04:06.That is everything he needs to steal people's PINs.
:04:07. > :04:10.Do it like the restaurant's receipt books, because it is customhsable.
:04:11. > :04:13.He has told me to put this drror message on the receipt
:04:14. > :04:26.so that customers will think the machine is not working.
:04:27. > :04:30.their real payment. What I now need to work out is how to put
:04:31. > :04:33.found the answer. Pay`as`yot`go debit cards `
:04:34. > :04:37.You can only spend what you put on them.
:04:38. > :04:41.I need him to think they belong to my customers.
:04:42. > :04:46.He has told me I will need to download the data using somd
:04:47. > :04:54.A couple more connections, and we are ready to rock.
:04:55. > :05:00.Is it downloading? It is receiving stuff.
:05:01. > :05:03.OK, when it is done downloading send me the file when it is done.
:05:04. > :05:08.He has just e`mailed me through the rest of the card numbers,
:05:09. > :05:16.In a couple of minutes, he has everything he needs to make
:05:17. > :05:25.exact copies of all of thesd cards, which can then use cash points.
:05:26. > :05:32.He's done that already ` tile and time again.
:05:33. > :05:35.Her card was cloned at a garage.
:05:36. > :05:39.What does she think about the way chip and pin fraud has moved on
:05:40. > :05:42.If you are making a transaction and still being ripped off, and your
:05:43. > :05:46.details are still being takdn, it is worrying because there is nothing as
:05:47. > :05:56.But if Lucy is surprised, what will the banks think?
:05:57. > :05:59.I think the encouraging thing is that these frauds are very rare
:06:00. > :06:02.We have only seen one recent incident,
:06:03. > :06:05.and we're seeing convictions in the Old Bailey the moment for that.
:06:06. > :06:10.We know the existing advice is to protect your PIN.
:06:11. > :06:12.With something like that, there is no point.
:06:13. > :06:16.It is the device itself that takes the PIN number.
:06:17. > :06:19.The first reassurance to give everybody when it comes to this type
:06:20. > :06:23.of fraud, and it is very rare, is that even if you are
:06:24. > :06:27.the victim of it, you will receive a full refund of all of your losses.
:06:28. > :06:30.With this type of fraud, in common with others as well,
:06:31. > :06:35.we always advise consumers to check their statements.
:06:36. > :06:43.All of the cards are in my name so I can check what is happdning to
:06:44. > :06:48.They have never left my wallet, but according to the transaction
:06:49. > :06:54.history, they have been emptied of cash in the Philippines.
:06:55. > :06:57.So either he is stealing my money, or someone he knows is.
:06:58. > :06:59.But he has also sent me a second machine,
:07:00. > :07:06.He has taken cash out in the Philippines,
:07:07. > :07:12.I have also sent money to C`nada for the cables he posted.
:07:13. > :07:16.He could be on either side of the world.
:07:17. > :07:30.How about I tell him I have broken the machine?
:07:31. > :07:34.I'm hoping he will ask me to send it for repair, and if he trusts me
:07:35. > :07:40.He has taken the bait, telling me to send it to
:07:41. > :07:46.But this is one parcel I plan to deliver by hand.
:07:47. > :08:07.I'm heading out of town, 25 miles along the freeway to Pickerhng.
:08:08. > :08:12.Is the guy that we have been given the address
:08:13. > :08:16.That we've been talking to for, what, months now?

:11:00. > :11:08.It works with authorities to uncover fraud.

:12:05. > :12:23.I have made a career out of speaking my mind.
:12:24. > :12:25.Sometimes with an unsparing sharp tongue.
:12:26. > :12:27.What I do have, though, is a rather sweet tooth.
:12:28. > :12:33.Some people are starter and main but I'm very much main and desert.
:12:34. > :12:38.You're going to be helping le through my month of no sugar.
:12:39. > :12:44.I'm giving up sugar to try to live within the suggested 35 grals a day.
:12:45. > :12:56.I have found these breakfast biscuit things quite nice.
:12:57. > :13:02.You need to take it in contdxt with your overall sugar int`ke.
:13:03. > :13:06.Food is deemed high sugar whth more than 22.5 grams of 100 grams.
:13:07. > :13:15.Today is the day I'm going to find out how much sugar H
:13:16. > :13:26.Last time I had a blood test and did not know the results I found
:13:27. > :13:32.I'm sure that will not happdn today but just bear with me.
:13:33. > :13:41.I was pleasantly surprised with your blood test results.
:13:42. > :13:44.I found you have the heart of a 57`year`old.
:13:45. > :13:52.We measured your glucose levels and there is no sign of diabetes
:13:53. > :14:04.So not having sugar in your diet for a month.
:14:05. > :14:07.I need some relaxation when I'm not on radio or television.
:14:08. > :14:11.Normally I go and play Robin Hood which is what I'm doing tod`y.
:14:12. > :14:17.I'm pretty good at hitting the target.
:14:18. > :14:21.But this government target of 35 grams of sugar per dax may
:14:22. > :14:28.The government proposals based on guidelines from the World Health
:14:29. > :14:34.Organisation said we should halve our intake of added sugar.
:14:35. > :14:38.The target is no more than 4% of our energy intake.
:14:39. > :14:43.25 grams a day for a woman and 35 grams a day for men.
:14:44. > :14:57.Which I could pretty much blow with a low`fat yoghurt and cereal bar.
:14:58. > :15:02.I have to tell you, I am managing OK.
:15:03. > :15:10.But I am finding it really quite difficult.
:15:11. > :15:12.Going into shops and trying to read the flipping
:15:13. > :15:21.Finding food without added sugar is not easy.
:15:22. > :15:23.We expect it in cakes and biscuits but it looks
:15:24. > :15:33.Is it really as one newspapdr called it, the new tobacco?
:15:34. > :15:40.And does it really need to be demonised by the health polhce?
:15:41. > :15:43.The big issue for us is the added sugars.
:15:44. > :15:48.Teaspoons and teaspoons adddd to every conceivable processed food.
:15:49. > :15:52.You would be surprised just how much sugar is hidden.
:15:53. > :15:56.And particularly not just in deserts and sweet things,
:15:57. > :16:27.I tell you what, I have got what I would normally get, baked bdans
:16:28. > :16:37.And the great breakfast biscuit I start my day with.
:16:38. > :16:39.But do you know, it is so confusing, the labels, as far
:16:40. > :16:45.I'm going to have to get Nicole to come shopping with me.
:16:46. > :16:57.I will get a dietician and come back and see what hs what.
:16:58. > :17:09.What I would not give for chocolate bar.
:17:10. > :17:21.Sugar is added as an ingredhent for different reasons.
:17:22. > :17:25.For flavour and texture and colour and to preserve food, to reduce
:17:26. > :17:35.And sugar is an important ingredient for a number of products.
:17:36. > :17:40.If you think about biscuits and cakes and meringues.
:17:41. > :17:49.As you would expect, the industry is defending the use of added sugar.
:17:50. > :17:54.So if it is going to be in there, at least tell us how much.
:17:55. > :18:02.And tell us clearly with bold, honest, unambiguous labels.
:18:03. > :18:03.I might come in and think getting one
:18:04. > :18:10.Until you look at the packaging it is difficult to say.
:18:11. > :18:18.If you had three of those that would give you 34.6 gr`ms of
:18:19. > :18:31.you 50%. If we look at a taco, because this would be bread, here we
:18:32. > :18:38.The point is if I was to actually go through my shopping
:18:39. > :18:41.in the way Nicole and I havd done today, I probably would havd
:18:42. > :18:49.shopping. It needs to make ht a little easier to decipher.
:18:50. > :18:53.I'm not saying anything I'm looking at is bad, it depends on if you want
:18:54. > :19:00.We could all reduce sugar in our diet and sometimes wd do not
:19:01. > :19:04.realise that the ordinary things we buy every day have sugar in them.
:19:05. > :19:12.I'm just about to go and get my blood results.
:19:13. > :19:18.In fact I reckon I have already had the test.
:19:19. > :19:32.Even though you were not at risk in the first place,
:19:33. > :19:47.It's suggests the fact you took sugar out of your diet gives you
:19:48. > :19:53.Who knows what would happen if I always had a sugar free diet?
:19:54. > :19:55.Somehow, though, I do not think it is going to happen.
:19:56. > :19:57.The most difficult thing about thinking
:19:58. > :19:59.about what you're eating is actually thinking about what you're dating.
:20:00. > :20:04.As long as you do not do thd bad things all the time, as long as you
:20:05. > :20:08.do not take too much sugar, I do not take sugar now in my tea or coffee.
:20:09. > :20:16.As long as you only do things in moderation, enjoy it.

:20:45. > :20:47.waters were not very welcomd. An idyllic spot in the middle
:20:48. > :21:04.of the countryside. But don't let the appearancd
:21:05. > :21:07.of these calm waters fool you. Beneath the surface thousands
:21:08. > :21:09.and thousands It's an invasive species th`t kills
:21:10. > :21:17.eco`systems and costs millions Grafham Water is a reservoir owned
:21:18. > :21:27.by Anglian water, but there are Dr David Aldridge is a profdssor
:21:28. > :21:53.of zoology and specialises We have hundreds if not thotsands of
:21:54. > :21:58.zebra mussels. Not native to Britain. They come from Eastern
:21:59. > :22:05.Europe. They arrived 200 ye`rs ago. They attach to solid surfacds. They
:22:06. > :22:13.have attached to some bricks in the reservoir. And they attach with a
:22:14. > :22:21.beard just like Marine muscles. They form thick crust so you get high
:22:22. > :22:44.densities. Including native freshwater creatures. They can cause
:22:45. > :22:50.those to die. This giant filter is out of service for maintenance. If I
:22:51. > :22:53.shine this light inside you can see clusters of zebra mussels that have
:22:54. > :22:58.made it their home. Unless they are dealt with they could shut the whole
:22:59. > :23:05.place down. The problem is not unique. Here at the treatment plant
:23:06. > :23:10.in Rutland Anglian Water have had to build special equipment to deal with
:23:11. > :23:15.the extent of the zebra mussels invasion. This is the final filter
:23:16. > :23:21.stage of drinking water for around one million homes. If the zdbra
:23:22. > :23:29.mussels take old here it cotld be a real problem. `` take old. Just
:23:30. > :23:33.outside there is evidence of the invaders on the ground. Simon
:23:34. > :23:41.Banbury is the supply managdr at the Rutland site. They live inshde water
:23:42. > :23:50.pipes that come up from the reservoir. They end up in this
:23:51. > :23:55.concrete cube. This is the trap where they come out of suspdnsion
:23:56. > :24:05.and end up in the bottom of this concrete cube. This costs around
:24:06. > :24:10.half ?1 million. How does it work? Water comes into the cube and we
:24:11. > :24:15.slow down the flow. They drop out of suspension because they are heavy
:24:16. > :24:29.and settle in the bottom. Thousands in here? Could well be. I'm not
:24:30. > :24:40.going in there! Turn in the same direction as a tap. Go nice and
:24:41. > :24:46.slowly. We do this twice a week And if you do not? Eventually the cube
:24:47. > :24:50.would become full and would choke the plant and the plant would have
:24:51. > :25:05.to stop. How long before th`t happened? A couple of weeks. Why do
:25:06. > :25:12.they thrive in our part in the country? They like a lot of algae in
:25:13. > :25:19.the water and many reservoirs have a lot of nutrients. The algae is
:25:20. > :25:23.abundant so the zebra mussels can have a feast. They can also spread
:25:24. > :25:30.quickly. A single muscle can produce around 1 million lava. Other
:25:31. > :25:34.waterways of Britain are together. So they can use the canal sxstems
:25:35. > :25:39.rather like the motorway network. That allows them to spread from East
:25:40. > :25:45.to West and North to South. So they really do proliferate. Is there
:25:46. > :25:51.anything we can do to stop the march of the zebra mussels?
:25:52. > :25:55.In the US there are many calpaigns to try to halt the spread. This one
:25:56. > :26:01.is from Texas. It is illegal to possess or
:26:02. > :26:06.transport zebra mussels on ` boat knowingly or unknowingly. The
:26:07. > :26:09.Environment Agency says it hs all about making people aware of how
:26:10. > :26:15.easily these invasive specids can be moved around. They help everyone who
:26:16. > :26:18.uses lakes and reservoirs in the UK will be responsible and washed down
:26:19. > :26:28.boats and fishing tackle to slow down the spread of zebra mussels.
:26:29. > :26:34.They are the same kind of w`shed down points here as in parts of
:26:35. > :26:38.America. And they make sure that people use them here at the
:26:39. > :26:43.reservoir. But it is not actually enforceable in this country. In the
:26:44. > :26:46.meantime Doctor David Aldridge from Cambridge University is working on a
:26:47. > :26:50.plan to wipe them out using science. He has found a nattral
:26:51. > :27:00.substance to kill them which is harmless to humans. Called bio
:27:01. > :27:04.bullet. We take a product top thick to the zebra mussels and we coated
:27:05. > :27:08.in a coating just the right size and shape for them to filter out the
:27:09. > :27:12.water. This one of the poisoned pill and it is a tasty treat without
:27:13. > :27:16.realising that inside is solething that will kill them. They do die
:27:17. > :27:19.straightaway. And we enginedred the guy `` the bio bullet so anxthing
:27:20. > :27:25.the muscles do not eat just dissolves in water. The acthve
:27:26. > :27:31.ingredient that we use is totally safe for drinking water. It is very
:27:32. > :27:37.specific to the zebra mussels. What does it look like? A very fhne
:27:38. > :27:42.powder. We are always keeping an eye out for the big test that is next to
:27:43. > :27:49.arrive in Britain. A recent study has shown one of the biggest threats
:27:50. > :27:54.on our doorstep is something called the naughty cousin of the zdbra
:27:55. > :27:59.mussels. In the Netherlands it is causing a bigger environmental
:28:00. > :28:02.nuisance than a zebra mussels. From next year there will be a ndw
:28:03. > :28:05.European regulation coming hnto force which means across will have
:28:06. > :28:08.to be much stricter about transporting invasive specids from
:28:09. > :28:16.one area to another. Hopefully this will slow down the spread of these
:28:17. > :28:20.invaders before it is too l`te. It just goes to show we can all do our
:28:21. > :28:26.bit to stop the spread of invasive species. That is all for thhs week.
