:21:45. > :21:52.one to provide stability at a time of rapid expansion. Claim and
:21:52. > :21:55.counter-claim. What is clear is that it is not just students here
:21:56. > :21:59.at this college who are facing testing times. Questions are also
:21:59. > :22:09.being asked about NCG itself. A lot of people in the North East will be

:22:18. > :22:22.There are just 186 days to go until the start of the London Olympics.
:22:22. > :22:25.Almost all our top athletes have had to move from the North to train
:22:25. > :22:28.at Team GB bases in other parts of the country as part of their
:22:28. > :22:31.preparations for the 2012 Games. Among them the long jumper Chris
:22:31. > :22:35.Tomlinson, the man considered the region's best hope of a medal in
:22:35. > :22:39.the athletics arena. But staying away from home is just one
:22:39. > :22:41.sacrifice he has made in his quest to be the best.
:22:41. > :22:44.Chris Tomlinson, the man from Middlesbrough who jumps into a
:22:44. > :22:48.sandpit for a living. He has competed at the last two Olympics
:22:48. > :22:54.and is currently ranked 5th in the World. I am a Boro lad, born and
:22:54. > :22:57.bred. My wife is from Linthorpe, I'm from Nunthorpe. Chris now lives
:22:57. > :23:04.down south with his wife, the West End actress, Lucia Rovardi, so he
:23:04. > :23:07.can train here at the elite facilities in North London. It's a
:23:07. > :23:11.big sacrifice for a couple who are Northerners to their core. I think
:23:11. > :23:15.the way of life that we have in the north-east is so much better. It is
:23:15. > :23:19.just a matter of time before me and my wife go back up there. It is the
:23:19. > :23:28.best place on earth. This is the size of a flat in London. This is
:23:28. > :23:38.what you get. If he wins Olympic gold, he will be able to buy a much
:23:38. > :23:40.
:23:40. > :23:43.bigger home of. But last September, his hopes took a big setback. Just
:23:43. > :23:47.before the World Championships, my knee started playing up a bit I
:23:47. > :23:57.still made it to final, but my knee wasn't up to scratch. I needed an
:23:57. > :23:58.
:23:58. > :24:01.operation. Every time the knee travelled forwards, it would give
:24:01. > :24:07.me a lot of pain Below the knee cap, you have got the tendons and the
:24:07. > :24:10.tendon was inflamed and had a lot of blood in there. Chris is lucky.
:24:10. > :24:13.As one of Team GB's elite athletes, he receives support worth more than
:24:13. > :24:16.50,000 a year to pay for the best coaches, sports science and medical
:24:16. > :24:21.treatment. Money that comes mainly from us via the National Lottery.
:24:21. > :24:25.I have a sideline. I have a few houses in the North East that I
:24:25. > :24:29.bought when I was younger and I have to ensure the rent gets paid.
:24:29. > :24:35.Middlesbrough, there is a few nice flats. We don't get footballers
:24:35. > :24:37.wages by any stretch. He also collects prize money and appearance
:24:37. > :24:47.fees from various athletics meetings. There are various
:24:47. > :24:51.
:24:51. > :24:54.sponsorship deals. And then there's Strike Gold at London 2012 and
:24:54. > :25:04.Chris could reasonably expect a big leap in his earnings. And then
:25:04. > :25:04.
:25:04. > :25:11.there is the media interest which is already high. I did a few
:25:11. > :25:14.interviews recently in a few of the papers. Kind of embarrassing too.
:25:14. > :25:17.On the back page, it has me wearing sunglasses. One of those stupid
:25:17. > :25:20.pictures, they always go for the silly, gimp pictures. Basically
:25:20. > :25:25.saying about drugs cheats costing me medals and what my standpoint is
:25:25. > :25:28.on it. Chris is 30. Realistically, this is his last shot at Olympic
:25:28. > :25:37.glory. There is a lot hanging on his ability to stay fit over the
:25:37. > :25:47.next eight months. I don't like weight training. I find it boring.
:25:47. > :25:54.
:25:54. > :26:01.It's a means to an end. It is 9.10 on 25 November. I have a day off -
:26:01. > :26:04.whoopee! The knee is coming on well. I've just spoken to my agent about
:26:05. > :26:10.going to Moscow on 5th February. I need to get back into shape as soon
:26:10. > :26:20.as possible. My priority is to perform well at the Olympic Games.
:26:20. > :26:23.
:26:23. > :26:27.But two days later, a setback. a great day. I was training well,
:26:27. > :26:30.but me knee just started to hurt. The doctor scanned it but take it
:26:30. > :26:33.on symptoms, train today, making sure that I look after this knee.
:26:33. > :26:40.But Chris believes he has the right strategy to ensure that he can
:26:40. > :26:44.overcome his injury. It is about taking one step at the time. The
:26:44. > :26:47.only way to get there is to take it one day at a time. Of course people
:26:47. > :26:55.are talking about 2012, but I am thinking about today's training
:26:55. > :27:04.session. So who wears the trousers in this house? Not me! He has
:27:04. > :27:07.turned into a diva last few months! I keep having to tell him off!
:27:07. > :27:11.is going to be a big year for Chris - regardless of the Olympics. It
:27:11. > :27:20.means an extra financial burden, but he's still jumping for joy.
:27:20. > :27:24.Really excited about baby I am! We were trying for a while, so it was
:27:24. > :27:33.nice to finally get one past the keeper so to speak! When are you
:27:33. > :27:38.due? March 17th. The world championships are in Turkey on 10th
:27:38. > :27:42.March. If it comes early, Chris might not be here. My main priority
:27:42. > :27:51.is being here for the birth. If it was the Olympics, it would be
:27:52. > :27:55.different but it is the world A little more than seven months
:27:55. > :27:58.until the Olympics. It's no big leap of imagination to say this is
:27:58. > :28:01.the year that Chris could really hit the big time and the financial
:28:01. > :28:03.rewards that come with it. But there is something much more
:28:04. > :28:07.important on his mind than money, something that would really have
:28:07. > :28:11.him jumping for joy. And that is the simple glory of winning Gold in
:28:11. > :28:15.the sport he loves. In my event I am very fortunate, in that I'm not
:28:16. > :28:21.going up against a world record holder. I am going up against very
:28:21. > :28:29.good athletes, but not necessarily the world's greatest ever. I have
:28:29. > :28:35.got to take great heart from that. A medal is a medal. Fingers crossed
:28:35. > :28:42.for him at the summer. You can follow me on Facebook and
