0:00:00 > 0:00:08Wendy next half hour: as Darlington Football Club battles for survival

0:00:08 > 0:00:13we have an account of the last 10 a roller-coaster of days.

0:00:13 > 0:00:21These people want their children to be able to follow their team. Last

0:00:21 > 0:00:29week, that possibility was gone. The story of a fascination with a

0:00:29 > 0:00:34sound which took one man to the ends of the planet.

0:00:34 > 0:00:40A beautiful, haunting voice. They live in a world of Sound and

0:00:40 > 0:00:46vibration. And learn how to make campsite

0:00:46 > 0:00:56cooking a gourmet experience. I want people to experience

0:00:56 > 0:01:08

0:01:08 > 0:01:13something a little bit different. It has been an extraordinary 10

0:01:13 > 0:01:21days. Just over one we could call it looks as if Darlington Football

0:01:21 > 0:01:31Club had suffered at fatal blow. -- one a week ago. But the fans have

0:01:31 > 0:01:37

0:01:37 > 0:01:44These are men about to pull Darlington Football Club are back

0:01:44 > 0:01:52from the brink. 50,000 has purchased a short stay of execution

0:01:52 > 0:02:00to prevent oblivion. They carry the hopes of the town, and the future

0:02:00 > 0:02:06of its club. When your community needs you, you

0:02:06 > 0:02:10have an obligation. We will be rallying the town and

0:02:11 > 0:02:16the supporters to get behind the club.

0:02:16 > 0:02:21I am proud that the people have a chance to get the team out on the

0:02:21 > 0:02:26pitch. A retired businessman and local

0:02:26 > 0:02:31shopkeeper are the public face of the Save Darlington rescue team.

0:02:31 > 0:02:37They have less than a fortnight, and three games, to keep the club

0:02:37 > 0:02:42alive. They need money and public support.

0:02:42 > 0:02:46By creating this wonderful moment in history of the club but we have

0:02:46 > 0:02:52captured the hearts and minds of the world of sport. So hopes are

0:02:52 > 0:02:56high. Once you garner a certain amount of

0:02:56 > 0:03:02energy amongst the people, and interested parties, you can appeal

0:03:02 > 0:03:09for their support. That energy is very good at the moment.

0:03:09 > 0:03:14The club nor all about hard times. They languish in the Conference and

0:03:14 > 0:03:20Arc 2 million in the red. Their average crowd is 2000, and a

0:03:20 > 0:03:23stadium built for 20,000. The team were taken off the payroll last

0:03:23 > 0:03:33week and now they are preparing for a game which would never have

0:03:33 > 0:03:39

0:03:39 > 0:03:44happened when it not for an army of volunteers. -- where it not.

0:03:44 > 0:03:48The football club means Lords to the town. It brings in money. At

0:03:48 > 0:03:54town like ours should not be without a football team. I would be

0:03:54 > 0:04:01heartbroken. It is in my blood. I have been

0:04:01 > 0:04:04coming here for 20 years. So I had to come down and help.

0:04:04 > 0:04:10Everything from the ticket office to the kitchen is a run by

0:04:10 > 0:04:19volunteers. Food is provided free by local farms. And there is a

0:04:19 > 0:04:29Dunkirk spirit. As a Winston Churchill said, this

0:04:29 > 0:04:41

0:04:41 > 0:04:46On balance, it is a fantastic result in the circumstances. The

0:04:46 > 0:04:56rescue group a gallop alongside local MP, Jenny Chapman, who had a

0:04:56 > 0:04:58

0:04:58 > 0:05:08buyout plan. But money is tight. The idea was to volunteer for

0:05:08 > 0:05:09

0:05:09 > 0:05:15preparing the pitch. For of them did that work. -- Four. He said to

0:05:15 > 0:05:25me, this is my last pint of the week, and we are saving petrol

0:05:25 > 0:05:25

0:05:25 > 0:05:30money to get together and Tuesday. These people want their children to

0:05:30 > 0:05:35follow the team. Last week, that possibility was gone. They are

0:05:35 > 0:05:43concerned about ancestry and heritage. Being able to continue,

0:05:43 > 0:05:48the family bloodline, supporting Darlington Football Club.

0:05:49 > 0:05:56It could be our last away game but we have until January 31st to keep

0:05:56 > 0:06:01fighting. If we go down, we will go down fighting.

0:06:01 > 0:06:06It would be my life. I would be heartbroken. I wouldn't follow

0:06:06 > 0:06:16football as much. We are showing what the club needs

0:06:16 > 0:06:26to us and hoping to pull through. I am getting on a bit now and would

0:06:26 > 0:06:51

0:06:51 > 0:06:56You can touch it if you like. Now you know he is not a Chelsea fan!

0:06:56 > 0:07:04We have a strong support. Not just in Darlington but also some

0:07:04 > 0:07:14southern fans. Darlington paid my wages before

0:07:14 > 0:07:16

0:07:16 > 0:07:21Fulham picked me up. I cannot thank them enough for that.

0:07:21 > 0:07:31250 support does make the long journey home. Another busy day is

0:07:31 > 0:07:31

0:07:31 > 0:07:41in store. a hotel tomorrow to see how things

0:07:41 > 0:07:42

0:07:42 > 0:07:52are moving forward. We think we have a buyer for the

0:07:52 > 0:07:53

0:07:53 > 0:07:58club. We are about to find out. There may be a marriage!

0:07:58 > 0:08:02The reason I got in contact last week is the fantastic stadium the

0:08:02 > 0:08:11club currently occupy and the prospect of making that stadium

0:08:11 > 0:08:18work as an asset. Paul is a multi- millionaire who

0:08:18 > 0:08:25offers 300,000 to help keep the club afloat.

0:08:25 > 0:08:30making the stadium work as an asset as opposed to a liability as a

0:08:30 > 0:08:38challenge I think I have the tools to do. I also have the passion to

0:08:38 > 0:08:42make it work. The last thing that supporters want

0:08:42 > 0:08:50is to get screwed over. I am not suggesting you would do that, but

0:08:50 > 0:08:53it seems to happen a lot. The community and the supporters

0:08:54 > 0:09:03together will mean that the failings of the past become a thing

0:09:03 > 0:09:13of the past. Everything is confirmed. Let

0:09:13 > 0:09:14

0:09:14 > 0:09:22welcome him aboard. Can I backed this? I need a bit more detail.

0:09:22 > 0:09:32That detail includes asking whether debt can be wiped out also -- and

0:09:32 > 0:09:46

0:09:46 > 0:09:56also details of potential rival You are a star! Thank you!

0:09:56 > 0:10:04

0:10:04 > 0:10:13He should be at Hartlepool, but he Football clubs are for life, not

0:10:13 > 0:10:22just for business. Three days later and the stay of

0:10:22 > 0:10:32execution expires. This could be the club's last game.

0:10:32 > 0:10:33

0:10:33 > 0:10:38We will go out with one last half. Their story is not unique, and

0:10:38 > 0:10:48other clubs face similar challenges. But the club has raised a tens of

0:10:48 > 0:10:51

0:10:51 > 0:10:57thousands of pounds. It has reconnected the club with

0:10:57 > 0:11:02the community. The change has to be permanent.

0:11:02 > 0:11:07They should know by tomorrow if they have pulled off a deal for the

0:11:07 > 0:11:13long-term survival of the club. Regardless of the outcome, they can

0:11:13 > 0:11:23look back and say, we did that. They are the ones keeping this

0:11:23 > 0:11:23

0:11:23 > 0:11:27football club alive. Hour next film as a real treat for

0:11:27 > 0:11:31the years. You might want to switch off everything except the

0:11:31 > 0:11:34television and listen carefully. Who would have thought that a

0:11:34 > 0:11:40youngster playing around with a tape recorder would become one of

0:11:40 > 0:11:45the few people alive to work -- walk on both poles of the planet.

0:11:45 > 0:11:54But Chris Watson from Tyneside has done all that just by being a good

0:11:54 > 0:12:04You've probably never heard of Chris Watson. But there's every

0:12:04 > 0:12:06

0:12:06 > 0:12:13chance you've heard the world through his ears. More animals and

0:12:13 > 0:12:21species inhabit an op treat than any other British treat. It is full

0:12:21 > 0:12:31of life and full of sound. It is amazing what I heard. The insect

0:12:31 > 0:12:34

0:12:34 > 0:12:39life inside this oak tree feeding off the wood and Bach. -- bark.

0:12:39 > 0:12:48I've been passionate about working West Sound for a long time. There

0:12:48 > 0:12:53are lots of devices like this for getting sound on location but what

0:12:53 > 0:13:03really interests me is getting microphones into places where we

0:13:03 > 0:13:03

0:13:03 > 0:13:13wouldn't normally put our ears. It is just thunderous. Sounds great.

0:13:13 > 0:13:17

0:13:17 > 0:13:23You really get that sense of power from the ocean. A lot of my work on

0:13:23 > 0:13:31Frozen Planet was to investigate the sounds at the North Pole and

0:13:31 > 0:13:38South Pole. The sounds of the seals could be heard over 15 miles away.

0:13:38 > 0:13:43This beautiful haunting voice which really reflected the reality of

0:13:43 > 0:13:49their lives. There is very little visibility below the surface so the

0:13:49 > 0:13:57live in a world of Sound and vibration. Chris has been working

0:13:58 > 0:14:03alongside David Attenborough for 15 years. This is the most southerly

0:14:03 > 0:14:08nesting Penguin of all penguins and like the polar bear up north their

0:14:08 > 0:14:17lives are dependent on the sea ice. On arrival in Antarctica, the

0:14:17 > 0:14:22Frozen Planet crew attracted a welcoming party. About 200 penguins

0:14:22 > 0:14:25came out of the sea and ran across came out of the sea and ran across

0:14:25 > 0:14:35to our helicopter and stood in a group, they set up this little

0:14:35 > 0:14:38

0:14:38 > 0:14:48semi-circle and just stood and It's a career you can trace back to

0:14:48 > 0:14:48

0:14:48 > 0:14:57his childhood. I took my little tape-recorder outside and picked

0:14:57 > 0:15:03the microphone on the bird table. Using this close perspective you

0:15:03 > 0:15:13start to hear the world in a very different way. The best way to do

0:15:13 > 0:15:14

0:15:14 > 0:15:24that is just too close your eyes and listen. And what works in your

0:15:24 > 0:15:32

0:15:32 > 0:15:39back garden in Newcastle works This recording is simply a hugely

0:15:39 > 0:15:49scaled up version of the garden experiment. These are Bulger's

0:15:49 > 0:15:50

0:15:50 > 0:15:52predating as zebra carcass in Kenya. Chris was playing with sound in the

0:15:52 > 0:16:02heady days of the experimental electronic music scene. He was

0:16:02 > 0:16:08

0:16:08 > 0:16:12founder member of Sheffield's Cabaret Voltaire. -- vultures.

0:16:12 > 0:16:22worked in the studio creating music and we could and travelled a lot.

0:16:22 > 0:16:24

0:16:24 > 0:16:27It was just great. -- week tour and travelled. The mix of art and sound

0:16:27 > 0:16:29still appeals. He was commissioned by the National Gallery to create a

0:16:29 > 0:16:38soundtrack to one of its masterpieces to hold visitors

0:16:38 > 0:16:46attention. The average time people spend in front of one of those

0:16:47 > 0:16:56great paintings is four seconds. I chose a Constable and created the

0:16:57 > 0:16:58

0:16:58 > 0:17:03sound of the view that he had created. BIRD SONG. In the middle

0:17:03 > 0:17:10of the 19th century Suffolk was not played by noise pollution as it is

0:17:10 > 0:17:20now. You see this village which must have been full of life and

0:17:20 > 0:17:20

0:17:20 > 0:17:26sound. DISTANT CHURCH BELLS. would not only have been able to

0:17:26 > 0:17:34see into the distance, he would have heard a sound. I am in

0:17:34 > 0:17:38Antarctica. The actual sound or rather silence here is almost below

0:17:38 > 0:17:43the threshold of this equipment. do not think there is anywhere else

0:17:43 > 0:17:51on Earth as quiet as this and there is certainly no noise pollution

0:17:51 > 0:17:58here. It is interesting to think the sounds that they would have

0:17:58 > 0:18:01heard in Scott's hut 100 years ago would have been the same. The sound

0:18:01 > 0:18:11of silence above ground enables Chris can record the actual noise

0:18:11 > 0:18:16

0:18:16 > 0:18:24of the planet itself. Even the glazier is heaving with life making

0:18:24 > 0:18:27its very slow journey. The sound is actually inaudible to the human ear,

0:18:27 > 0:18:37just as the movement of the glacier is invisible the eye but speed them

0:18:37 > 0:18:44

0:18:44 > 0:18:48both up and they come alive. No one is prepared for what happens next.

0:18:48 > 0:18:53Three or four macro enormous or cannot just surfaced vertically out

0:18:53 > 0:19:03of this which was something no bigger than a large garden pond to

0:19:03 > 0:19:03

0:19:03 > 0:19:08be. Towering above us as they took breath. Then they slid below the

0:19:08 > 0:19:11surface. Incredibly powerful. Such a moving moment. Frozen planet took

0:19:11 > 0:19:19more than two years to film, so the crew inevitably needed lots of

0:19:19 > 0:19:23stories to keep each other entertained. Chris has extra

0:19:23 > 0:19:29ordinarily discriminating ears. He maintains he can tell the

0:19:29 > 0:19:33difference between the sound of waves in the Pacific and waves in

0:19:33 > 0:19:42the Atlantic. The fact is that we do not know whether he is talking

0:19:42 > 0:19:46or not. -- joking. Like David Attenborough, Chris Watson has been

0:19:46 > 0:19:53just about everywhere and is one of the few people ever to have stood

0:19:54 > 0:19:58at both poles. I am very lucky to have travelled the world making

0:19:58 > 0:20:03sound recordings. But it is a great relief to come home and come to

0:20:03 > 0:20:13places like this and just walk and sew up the sounds that are all

0:20:13 > 0:20:18

0:20:18 > 0:20:28around me. -- soak up. And if you want to immerse yourself in more or

0:20:28 > 0:20:33

0:20:33 > 0:20:36Chris Watson pause macro bogof sound, head to my blog. In cash

0:20:36 > 0:20:39strapped times you might be thinking of ditching the two weeks

0:20:39 > 0:20:42in the sun at a plush hotel for a more frugal camping trip here in

0:20:42 > 0:20:52the UK. But does sleeping under canvas in, say, the Yorkshire Dales

0:20:52 > 0:20:57

0:20:57 > 0:21:00mean you can't still eat as though you're dining at the Ritz? We've

0:21:00 > 0:21:10come to the campsite at Hook House Farm in Robin Hood's Bay, near

0:21:10 > 0:21:15

0:21:15 > 0:21:23Whitby. I do quite a bit of camping, and why not, it's cheap, you're

0:21:23 > 0:21:28closer to nature and it brings you to places like this. But

0:21:28 > 0:21:38traditional camping food has always been bangers and beans from tens. I

0:21:38 > 0:21:44

0:21:45 > 0:21:47have been eating that from years and I am fed up with it. Josh

0:21:47 > 0:21:50spends as many weekends under canvas as possible and believes

0:21:50 > 0:21:53that with just a little planning and organisation, gourmet food is

0:21:53 > 0:22:01within easy reach. Over the next couple of days we're going to put

0:22:01 > 0:22:08that theory to the test. I am trying to encourage people to try

0:22:08 > 0:22:18things a little bit different. Some are simple salads, others more

0:22:18 > 0:22:26

0:22:26 > 0:22:31complicated like a paella. Whitby prawns. What are you having? Simple

0:22:31 > 0:22:41enough for now but tomorrow we will set him a challenge that will test

0:22:41 > 0:22:57

0:22:57 > 0:23:05in to the limit. Camping is now very common but de cuisine has been

0:23:05 > 0:23:09left behind. It is a blustery but bright day at Robin Hood's Bay.

0:23:09 > 0:23:14After a breakfast of scrambled egg and smoked salmon it is time to get

0:23:14 > 0:23:19down to business. Today they will put his theory to the test, we will

0:23:19 > 0:23:24send him out to find some local ingredients and then knock up a

0:23:24 > 0:23:29feast that is fit for a king. We have given him a limited budget and

0:23:29 > 0:23:36stipulated everything must be bought within five miles of the

0:23:36 > 0:23:42campsite. Are you happy with what you're doing? Very much so. Lunch

0:23:42 > 0:23:52at 3 o'clock then? We have got lobster on the menu for tonight. We

0:23:52 > 0:23:57are looking for a chap on the boat with fresh lobster caught overnight.

0:23:57 > 0:24:03Morning, Sir. I am looking for a nice sized lobster being in mind

0:24:03 > 0:24:12the pot I have got. That one is a contender. We have got a couple of

0:24:12 > 0:24:17lobsters. We will pick these up with a little bit of linguini and

0:24:17 > 0:24:25some tomato sauce. We will cover them in a damp cloth to keep them

0:24:25 > 0:24:30comfortable for a couple of hours. We will griddle some can check up

0:24:30 > 0:24:36on a skewer and griddle it over a hot flame for a few minutes. We are

0:24:36 > 0:24:42going to a great little fish shop here. It has got an amazing window

0:24:42 > 0:24:50display. Looked at the size of that, you would not want to get your leg

0:24:50 > 0:24:54stuck India! I will have half-a- dozen scallops please. Meanwhile,

0:24:55 > 0:25:01back at the campsite I am organising a little surprise for

0:25:01 > 0:25:08Josh. I have decided to bring in a judge who is a little bit

0:25:08 > 0:25:12discerning. Hello, I am the National seafood chef of the year.

0:25:12 > 0:25:22I think food should be fresh, locally sourced and not messed

0:25:22 > 0:25:26around with too much. I will be harsh but fair. Back at the

0:25:26 > 0:25:35campsite Josh has started cooking but the weather has taken a turn

0:25:35 > 0:25:42for the worse. It looks like the weather's going to let the heavens

0:25:42 > 0:25:46open on us. These two lobsters, beautiful chaps, are going to feed

0:25:46 > 0:25:51three of us. I would just like to say thanks to the lobsters for

0:25:51 > 0:25:59giving up their lives and now I have to dispatch them. Then the

0:25:59 > 0:26:05weather went from bad to ridiculous. Is that normal? No, that is not

0:26:05 > 0:26:11normal! The wind is knocking the tent absolutely flat. Take a look

0:26:11 > 0:26:16over there. You might be able to see a huge bank of rain. That is

0:26:16 > 0:26:25coming straight for us. Will you be able to carry on cooking? I will

0:26:25 > 0:26:32move inside the tent. That will stop the flames blowing out. Josh

0:26:32 > 0:26:38only has 30 minutes until our judge is due to arrive. It is a case of

0:26:38 > 0:26:46keep calm and carry on. That looks delicious. That is literally just

0:26:47 > 0:26:56onions, garlic and tomatoes. These are just boiled in sea water for 15

0:26:56 > 0:27:04minutes. At the o'clock our guest arrives at the campsite. Despite

0:27:04 > 0:27:10the appalling conditions earlier, Josh is a ready to serve up.

0:27:10 > 0:27:18have a starter of scallops wrapped in an check-up and a little

0:27:18 > 0:27:28linguini, lobster in tomato sauce. I hope you enjoy it. Cooked to

0:27:28 > 0:27:30

0:27:30 > 0:27:34perfection. Lovely. I'll try the lobster. I can still taste the

0:27:35 > 0:27:40lobster it through the sauce. There is some real nice zingy lemon going

0:27:41 > 0:27:45on there as well. A simple dish but absolutely Fabulous. If I was out

0:27:45 > 0:27:55camping and I got serve his I would be over the moon. These are
