:00:06. > :00:14.It is a holiday rip off, be on mines down that route hundreds.

:00:14. > :00:20.Complete devastation. Humiliating as well.

:00:20. > :00:25.Texting, sending tweets, and even surfing the net, while you are

:00:25. > :00:29.driving? Driving while using a smart phone is more distracting

:00:29. > :00:36.than being over the legal limit for drink-driving. It is even more

:00:36. > :00:40.distracting than been under the influence of cannabis.

:00:40. > :00:50.And we meet the leaders of the future being trained right here in

:00:50. > :00:54.

:00:54. > :00:59.Kent. I have come here at... I am Natalie Graham at with untold

:00:59. > :01:09.stories closer to home. From all around the south and the south-east,

:01:09. > :01:20.

:01:20. > :01:25.Tonight, we are in one of Kent's most picturesque villages. We are

:01:25. > :01:30.back later, but first, thinking about your holidays yet? If so,

:01:30. > :01:35.watch out. At this time of year, lots of us

:01:35. > :01:39.are thinking about our holidays. Traditionally, we would be booking

:01:39. > :01:44.in places like this, but statistics show that more than half of us are

:01:44. > :01:51.breeding it and booking our own holidays on mine now. And why not?

:01:51. > :01:56.Look at this villa with stunning views and a private pool. It sounds

:01:56. > :02:01.like the perfect holiday so what could possibly go wrong?

:02:01. > :02:05.Decided to have a look at villas on the internet. Surged through a

:02:05. > :02:10.couple of websites, trying to find one's which were unsuitable for

:02:10. > :02:16.three families. Unfortunately, duly fell in love with that dream villa.

:02:16. > :02:24.A I contacted the owner who then contacted me and said -- gave me

:02:24. > :02:28.the cost of the villa, which was around 5,700. The evil That was

:02:28. > :02:34.owned by a couple who were not travel agents, but they definitely

:02:34. > :02:40.have the knack for getting bookings. Uncertain weeks, they had up to 10

:02:40. > :02:45.parties booked into the they were so it wasn't just a case of making

:02:45. > :02:50.2,750 a week. In August in one week, you can times that by 10.

:02:50. > :02:55.The couple seemed perfectly hospitable and reassuring. They

:02:55. > :02:59.would answer any questions about the villa by phone and e-mail, but

:02:59. > :03:04.once they were paid, that service stopped. I transferred money from

:03:04. > :03:09.my bank account to the owner's bank account. I heard nothing at all. I

:03:10. > :03:14.sent another e-mail and I actually said that I was getting worried

:03:14. > :03:18.because she had not responded and it had been maybe a week since I

:03:18. > :03:24.had paid the balance and I have still got no response. Julie had

:03:24. > :03:28.transferred money to an account at this bank in have on an, an account

:03:29. > :03:32.police were already investigating on behalf of another holiday maker

:03:32. > :03:37.he was having trouble contacting the couple.

:03:37. > :03:42.They were over cupping the below to such a degree that at one point, 12

:03:42. > :03:46.holidays were shed job in for the same week. The property wasn't even

:03:46. > :03:50.available. They were advertising be below for a holiday bookings,

:03:50. > :03:55.knowing that there was a tenant in the Villa and it was unavailable

:03:55. > :04:01.for hire. I had a phone call informing me

:04:01. > :04:04.that the villa was under police investigation. I was informed that

:04:04. > :04:12.their work may be another 16 families that were also reporting

:04:12. > :04:17.the same thing. There were people from Norway, Switzerland, France,

:04:17. > :04:22.all these people who had booked into this villa as well. There were

:04:22. > :04:27.different age ranges, from young teenagers going on their first

:04:27. > :04:36.group holiday with friends, a party from Sweden, and again a group of

:04:36. > :04:40.female teenagers going away. One group actually went out and you can

:04:40. > :04:44.imagine going away for the first time only to turn up at a villa

:04:44. > :04:50.where it is no longer available. The police learned that the money

:04:50. > :04:55.that Julie and others have paid into the bank account had long gone.

:04:55. > :04:59.But the investigation team wasn't giving up. Although the account was

:04:59. > :05:08.leaked to a bogus address, upon closer examination there was a

:05:08. > :05:13.reference to a cottage in Dorset so the team headed west.

:05:13. > :05:19.Colleagues and myself attended that address and spoke to the occupants

:05:19. > :05:23.could turn out to be the parents of one of the offenders. But the

:05:23. > :05:31.parents denied knowledge of the couple's whereabouts so the police

:05:31. > :05:35.began to search the House for clues. White seized two diaries from the

:05:35. > :05:41.cottage. I had a tug-of-war with Mrs Grant where she forcibly tried

:05:41. > :05:45.to remove them from my hand. In one of the diaries at the back was an

:05:45. > :05:49.address so we suspected that was where they were living at the time.

:05:49. > :05:52.Meanwhile, Julie had to come to terms with her last holiday and

:05:52. > :05:57.break the news to the other families who were travelling with

:05:57. > :06:02.her that their money had gone. Complete devastation. I felt

:06:02. > :06:08.responsible because I had booked this holiday on behalf of the other

:06:08. > :06:12.parties. You feel that you have been taken for a ride. There was no

:06:12. > :06:15.intention of letting us have the holiday. It is a hard lesson to

:06:15. > :06:18.learn. The address the police found in the

:06:18. > :06:25.diary lead them to a luxury farmhouse in Somerset from where

:06:25. > :06:28.the couple were running their business. The game was up. They

:06:28. > :06:34.must be really stupid people to think they can get away with such a

:06:34. > :06:39.thing or, because in this day and a, a lot of things are traceable. They

:06:39. > :06:43.were doing it through e-mail, bank account transfers, I don't know how

:06:43. > :06:46.they thought they could get away with it.

:06:46. > :06:49.The grants were arrested on suspicion of fraud. Having managed

:06:49. > :06:55.to con hundreds of people out of their holidays, they were brought

:06:55. > :06:59.to Guildford police station for questioning.

:06:59. > :07:06.Whilst Darren and Tracey had plenty to say to potential customers and

:07:06. > :07:13.the police, it was a different matter. You have a number of

:07:13. > :07:14.outstanding debts. No comment. had tried to obtain money

:07:15. > :07:20.fraudulently from these holidaymakers whilst knowing that

:07:20. > :07:26.they would not be able to use the Villa's services. No comment.

:07:26. > :07:33.and Mrs Grant maintained a not guilty plea until the trial.

:07:33. > :07:38.What right did either of you have to mislead these people? No comment.

:07:38. > :07:43.Mrs Grant was questioned for a number of hours and never gave one

:07:43. > :07:47.answer to a single question. comment. She chose, as is her right,

:07:47. > :07:52.to reply no comment to all of the questions.

:07:52. > :07:56.In December at the Crown Court in Guildford at the 11th hour, the

:07:56. > :08:00.couple had a change of heart. the last minute, they pleaded

:08:00. > :08:05.guilty so the trial did not go ahead. I am glad they did not get

:08:05. > :08:10.away with it in the end. They have been punished.

:08:10. > :08:17.He stated he was responsible for sending those e-mails despite them

:08:17. > :08:22.being in Tracy's name. Because of that, Mr Grant was sentenced to 27

:08:22. > :08:26.months imprisonment and Tracey Grant, his wife, was sentenced to

:08:26. > :08:32.nine months imprisonment. To be honest, I think it was greed. They

:08:32. > :08:36.were living far beyond their means. They had no means of employment at

:08:36. > :08:40.the time, and their daughter was attended a private school.

:08:40. > :08:43.While the couple are holidaying at Her Majesty's pleasure, it looks

:08:44. > :08:49.like their victims were only ever see a fraction of their money back.

:08:49. > :08:55.Meanwhile, there are lessons to be learnt. Safeguard yourself, it is

:08:55. > :08:58.quite difficult in that environment, but there is insurance out there,

:08:59. > :09:03.either through your bank account all through companies that

:09:03. > :09:12.advertise that specifically cover fraud advertising. If this happens,

:09:12. > :09:16.you are covered by an insurance company. Some of the victims

:09:16. > :09:19.involved in this case did receive some of their money back. I am

:09:19. > :09:25.still in shock that someone can still do that and to think they can

:09:25. > :09:29.get away with it. I really would think twice about using private

:09:29. > :09:39.rental again, although I have used it previous do this and everything

:09:39. > :09:49.

:09:49. > :09:57.has been OK. But I suppose it is a Coming up: The leaders of the

:09:57. > :10:04.future been trained here in Kent. Is it tight enough?

:10:04. > :10:11.Now, a dangerous game. Ms Thomas examines how texting, sending

:10:11. > :10:21.tweeds and using Facebook at the wheel puts lives at risk. -- using

:10:21. > :10:23.

:10:24. > :10:28.They came on the scene and changed our lives forever. Mobiles have

:10:28. > :10:32.come a long way since then, but could our need to be constantly

:10:32. > :10:35.connected be to blame for more deaths on our roads? We have a

:10:35. > :10:43.startling new evidence on how dangerous our love affair with

:10:43. > :10:49.phones can be. Over the last four years, the

:10:49. > :10:55.number of drivers getting caught in Kent have increased. -- number of

:10:55. > :11:02.drivers using mobiles at the wheel had increased it.

:11:03. > :11:07.The number has more than doubled in five years. Daniel knows the human

:11:07. > :11:12.cost behind the statistics. He lost his brother Jordan because a driver

:11:12. > :11:17.was using her phone at the wheel. He was only 19 years old, he had so

:11:17. > :11:22.many friends, he was on the cusp of starting his adult life. He was a

:11:22. > :11:25.very popular boy. Daniel's brother was on a bike at a

:11:25. > :11:30.junction when he was hit by a driver who was sending a text

:11:30. > :11:37.message. He died of head injuries. When we found out that it could

:11:37. > :11:44.have been prevented, the accident, it's sort of took us to a new level

:11:44. > :11:51.of emotion. We were obviously very upset about what had happened, but

:11:51. > :11:57.then there was anger which took over and a real necessity to find

:11:57. > :12:00.out what happened. We have filmed this reconstruction

:12:01. > :12:04.in safe conditions on private roads at the Transport Research

:12:05. > :12:10.Laboratory. But experts are becoming increasingly concerned

:12:10. > :12:14.about the dangers that smart phones present. People are not as texting

:12:14. > :12:19.all talking while driving, they are using Facebook, the internet and

:12:19. > :12:26.Twitter. The rise of the smart phone it is making people take

:12:26. > :12:30.stupid risks. This man is from the Institute of Advanced motorists. He

:12:30. > :12:40.says one of the extra features on a smart phone increases the

:12:40. > :12:41.

:12:41. > :12:47.A lot of people are starting to use smartphones, in particular a lot of

:12:47. > :12:56.young people. One in four have admitted that the regularly use a

:12:56. > :12:59.smartphone to check e-mails and so on when they are driving. Officers

:12:59. > :13:04.from the roads policing unit in Kent literally pick up the pieces

:13:04. > :13:11.if there is a crash caused by a phone. Today we are being taken out

:13:11. > :13:17.on patrol to spot drivers breaking the rules. Sometimes they will

:13:17. > :13:22.swerve, or they will go through a traffic light. We go on have a look

:13:22. > :13:26.and they are on their phones. We will ask them if they knew they had

:13:26. > :13:34.gone through a red light and they will say, sorry, I wasn't

:13:34. > :13:39.concentrating. If that person wasn't speaking on the phone,

:13:39. > :13:45.someone would be alive. If that was a member of my family and would

:13:46. > :13:50.find that very difficult to understand. We have only been in a

:13:50. > :13:54.car for 10 minutes and have already spotted someone on their mobile.

:13:54. > :14:03.Because of the amount of people killed on the roads, we need to

:14:03. > :14:09.start hammering the message home. We can send due to courts. You can

:14:09. > :14:12.have a conditional offer, a fixed penalty tickets. It is 60 and

:14:12. > :14:20.three points. They man admits his guilt, that says he has only been

:14:20. > :14:27.talking to his partner for a few minutes. Do you regret it? It is

:14:27. > :14:37.against the law, so I have to say yes. Do you regret it or regret

:14:37. > :14:38.

:14:38. > :14:47.being caught? Yes, I regret both. Would it be a deterrent to stop you

:14:47. > :14:52.doing it again? Honestly, if they need be, I will have to phone. But

:14:52. > :14:57.it was urgent, I would pick up the phone, yes. They should have pulled

:14:57. > :15:03.over, but there was nowhere to stop. So you would use it again, if you

:15:03. > :15:10.were driving? Yes, if it was an emergency. If I'm being honest,

:15:10. > :15:16.camel or no camera. That is a typical reaction, really. They are

:15:16. > :15:23.so blase about the dangers. If they were to look at some of the

:15:23. > :15:27.accidents they would have a different attitude. We stop three

:15:27. > :15:32.more drivers. All have the same excuse, there are only on the phone

:15:32. > :15:37.for a short time. According to the statistics they are four times more

:15:37. > :15:42.likely to crash and twice as likely to miss at traffic signals. That

:15:42. > :15:47.isn't the talking on the phone, but experts are wake -- are worried

:15:47. > :15:52.about the smartphone as it is even more distracting. Little research

:15:52. > :15:57.has been done into this, until now. This man is from the Transport

:15:57. > :16:02.Research Laboratory and he is going to show me how to using a

:16:02. > :16:07.smartphone affects our drive. is the driving simulator. Get in

:16:07. > :16:14.and drive as if it was a normal car. We will ask you to do to drives,

:16:14. > :16:18.one more you are a -- distracted by a variety of social network tasks,

:16:18. > :16:26.and want then you are not distracted. We will compare those

:16:26. > :16:31.two. What kind of things would you be looking for? How well you do in

:16:31. > :16:39.traffic. Your reaction times and how well you can keep the car in

:16:39. > :16:43.the middle of that thence. Agrees to the test without the smartphone,

:16:43. > :16:48.seeing hazards in managing to keep the car on the road. You will

:16:48. > :16:53.shortly encounter a vehicle in the inside lane. Police approached this

:16:53. > :16:59.vehicle and follow it at a safe distance. It is quite easy to do 70

:16:59. > :17:03.miles an hour and not realise it. But soon it is time to drive

:17:03. > :17:10.producing a smartphone. I will see exactly how distracting a greedy

:17:10. > :17:19.gaze. Please send a private message from Facebook saying, don't worry,

:17:19. > :17:29.have a nice time in Paris. I sway through the road and Miss Hazard

:17:29. > :17:40.

:17:40. > :17:45.Warning signs. Some pretty hairy I feel actually really stressed out

:17:45. > :17:51.by that. I feel really hot. We didn't think it would be as bad as

:17:51. > :17:55.that. That was pretty offensive! I don't think I dare ask. How do I

:17:56. > :17:59.do? The when you were driving using the smartphone you were working

:18:00. > :18:04.really hard just to stay on the road. Your position was drifting a

:18:04. > :18:10.lot more. You were taking her eyes away from the road to look at the

:18:10. > :18:15.phone and drifting before you could correct the steering. You missed

:18:15. > :18:21.some of the reaction time hazards. We couldn't even recorder reaction

:18:21. > :18:28.time because you have missed the hazards. Would it have made any

:18:28. > :18:31.difference if I had done it hands- free? We have done work comparing

:18:31. > :18:36.hands-free phone calls and we find the impairment to driving is about

:18:36. > :18:40.the same, so hands-free and hand- held give a similar level of

:18:40. > :18:47.impairment to driving. How serious do you think the risk is from

:18:47. > :18:51.driving at the smartphone? I think the risk to a driver of using a

:18:51. > :18:56.smart phone is huge. Taking your eyes off the road, having slower

:18:56. > :19:00.reaction times and missing hazards or contribute to huge safety risk.

:19:00. > :19:04.The Test side in here has been carried out on a larger scale and

:19:04. > :19:09.it compared the effect of using a smartphone to other distractions

:19:09. > :19:14.like drink-driving. We all know that drink-driving is bad. It is

:19:14. > :19:18.socially and expect -- socially unacceptable. Driving while using a

:19:18. > :19:22.smartphone is actually more distracting than being over the

:19:22. > :19:28.legal limit for drink-driving. It is even more distracting than being

:19:28. > :19:33.an to the influence of cannabis. It is that distracting. You messed

:19:33. > :19:37.things, you don't react quickly enough and it is a recipe for

:19:37. > :19:42.crashes to happen. Road safety experts say most reasonable people

:19:42. > :19:47.would not drink and drive, but when it comes to using a smartphone, the

:19:47. > :19:52.public perception needs to keep up with technology. We want the

:19:52. > :19:56.mobile-phone providers, to social networking providers, the

:19:56. > :20:01.Government, the industry, everybody to get together and start sending

:20:01. > :20:11.out this message of how distracting it can be to use a mobile phone for

:20:11. > :20:23.

:20:23. > :20:28.Kids growing up in the inner cities miss out on so much that the

:20:28. > :20:32.countryside has to offer, but a lucky few a couple of miles from

:20:32. > :20:42.here are enjoying adventure, fresh- air and are being kept on the

:20:42. > :20:48.

:20:48. > :20:52.straight and narrow. These kids were probably normally

:20:52. > :20:58.be kicking a ball against the wall of a tower block in London where

:20:58. > :21:02.they live, but not today because they are at an outdoor learning

:21:03. > :21:10.centre in Kent. It is here is that be bumping to a 12-year-old chap

:21:10. > :21:20.called Israel. I have come here because I want to have a break from

:21:20. > :21:20.

:21:20. > :21:30.mum! My mum is always saying that I need to leave the house. I am from

:21:30. > :21:36.Bromley and my name is Israel. I like eating rice crispy East.

:21:36. > :21:41.are on the pilot of a new course called East, which stands for her

:21:41. > :21:45.action, challenge and explore. The idea is to give inner-city kids a

:21:45. > :21:49.taste of adventure throughout their teenage years and so help them

:21:49. > :21:59.become leaders of the future. They decided it would be a good idea to

:21:59. > :22:01.

:22:01. > :22:08.get them out of the city and into the countryside of Kent. We have

:22:09. > :22:13.just changed to another world. is why they are spending a

:22:13. > :22:19.residential weekends at the Kent pace of wide horizons outdoor

:22:19. > :22:23.Education Trust. Most of the children have disadvantaged

:22:24. > :22:33.backgrounds who would not have been away and may not have had the sorts

:22:33. > :22:37.of experiences that often we take for granted. We have just done our

:22:37. > :22:47.survival challenge and are getting ready for lunch. If you would like

:22:47. > :22:49.

:22:49. > :22:55.to film us at lunch, please do. The website is www. Inside Out .co.uk.

:22:55. > :23:00.I think Israel is a lovely lad. That is the first time he has ever

:23:00. > :23:06.been in that kind of context. He is engaged in this journey about what

:23:06. > :23:11.this is all about, I venture, challenge and explore. How are you

:23:11. > :23:18.getting on with everyone? Quite well, some not quite well, then

:23:18. > :23:28.that is how things go. This is Darnell. Usually I find it hard to

:23:28. > :23:28.

:23:28. > :23:33.to be around other people. I will be leader. I have learnt that I can

:23:33. > :23:38.be around other people without getting stressed-out and angry.

:23:38. > :23:47.Folded up a little bit more so we can fit it in nicely. Do you often

:23:47. > :23:53.get angry? Yes. Why is that? Because I have anger problems. We

:23:53. > :23:59.want to go back to No. 3 again, cross over and get back to base. I

:23:59. > :24:04.have learnt more about myself, really. Stuff that I never knew I

:24:04. > :24:11.could do. And I never thought I would be able to do. I have figured

:24:11. > :24:14.out that I can. Mike's main focus and all of this is to encourage

:24:14. > :24:22.leader should be young people. He found some inspiration in an

:24:22. > :24:26.unlikely place. Last some were rioting swept through London. At

:24:26. > :24:31.the same time, it might was planning this course. Then he chose

:24:31. > :24:38.the wrong time to ride his motorbike through Peckham. I was
