:01:11. > :01:20.we reveal evidence that could solve one of the UK's biggest murder
:01:20. > :01:23.mysteries. Glenn Campbell investigates the infamous Lord
:01:23. > :01:29.Lucan case and interviews two new witnesses who claim the disgraced
:01:29. > :01:32.peer was smuggled out of the UK to a secret life abroad. I think I can
:01:32. > :01:42.tell you what really happened to Lord Lucan when he fled to this
:01:42. > :01:48.house on the night of 7th November 1974. Lord Lucan was a desperate

:01:52. > :02:02.the family house hearing Belgravia intent on murdering her. But his
:02:02. > :02:05.
:02:05. > :02:15.plan went terribly wrong. He bludgeoned to death the family's

:02:20. > :02:26.asleep upstairs. But somehow, she managed to escape and fled down the
:02:26. > :02:30.street to this pub where she raised the alarm. And that is when Lord
:02:30. > :02:40.Lucan, Arabs -- aristocrat, a professional gambler and member of
:02:40. > :02:48.
:02:48. > :02:51.London's social elite fled to friends in Uckfield, Sussex. And it
:02:51. > :02:53.was Uckfield in Sussex where the trail went cold. Lucan was never

:02:59. > :03:08.abandoned with a length of lead piping still in the boot here in

:03:28. > :03:30.John Aspinall, casino owner and founder of Howlett's Zoo in Kent
:03:30. > :03:33.and Sir James Goldsmith, multi- millionaire businessman, somehow
:03:33. > :03:36.smuggled Lucan out of the country to escape justice. John Aspinall
:03:36. > :03:41.for one made no secret of his loyalty towards his old gambling
:03:41. > :03:51.friend, Lord Lucan. Here he is in a rare interview with the BBC's
:03:51. > :03:53.
:03:53. > :03:56.Ludovic Kennedy just two years after Lucan had vanished. Well,
:03:56. > :04:01.what I probably would have done if he had appeared here is anything
:04:01. > :04:11.that he wished. Yes, you actually say if he had begged asylum from me
:04:11. > :04:17.
:04:17. > :04:20.he would have got it. He would have got it. So could John Aspinall have
:04:20. > :04:23.been behind Lord Lucan's vanishing act? John Aspinall and Sir James
:04:23. > :04:32.Goldsmith are now both dead. Neither uttered a word in public
:04:32. > :04:39.about the role they played in Lucan's disappearance. I had come
:04:39. > :04:46.into the casino world by chance. What sort of world was it? What was
:04:46. > :04:51.your job? I was the secretary, dealing with the day today, mostly
:04:51. > :04:56.the memberships. And did he greater trust to? I think he did get
:04:56. > :05:05.comfortable enough to trust me. And I wasn't really an inquiring sort
:05:05. > :05:12.of person. I just take things as they came and I was quite a loyal

:05:16. > :05:21.to come right jail into private meetings, where Lord Lucan was the

:05:26. > :05:32.with his cup of tea. I think they had been together for a while

:06:00. > :06:05.passports for the two all the children. There we go to the
:06:05. > :06:11.treetop resort in Kenya and have a holiday there. As far as they were
:06:11. > :06:18.concerned, there are going on a safari holiday. At some point,
:06:18. > :06:24.their father would observe them and see how there were growing up, and
:06:24. > :06:29.look at them from a distance. It was quite clear that he wouldn't
:06:29. > :06:33.meet them or speak to them or make himself known to them. That would
:06:33. > :06:42.make it difficult for them, going back to their mother, saying, I

:07:25. > :07:32.amongst many other things that they did in that casino world, which are
:07:32. > :07:39.quite alien to me. It seemed quite a nice thing to do in a way, to
:07:39. > :07:44.facilitate her father seeing his children. If I now put it in the
:07:44. > :07:49.context of he was a murderer, or there was a murder committed, and
:07:49. > :07:54.the family have suffered enormously, it doesn't seem the same. But how
:07:54. > :07:58.do we know that what deal is saying is true? We have done some research
:07:58. > :08:08.and I can tell you that she did were for John Aspinall at this
:08:08. > :08:15.
:08:15. > :08:18.Casino here in Knightsbridge. And I can introduce you to this man. His
:08:18. > :08:21.name is Bob Polkinghorne and he's the former Detective Inspector in
:08:21. > :08:25.charge of the Lucan case file during the 1980s. Now retired and
:08:25. > :08:27.living in Kent, we tracked Bob down hoping he could shed more light on
:08:27. > :08:31.what really happened to Lord Lucan. The Chief Superintendent contacted
:08:31. > :08:41.me and asked me her to have a look at the care to see if there were
:08:41. > :08:51.any developments. Exactly what came in while you were on the case?
:08:51. > :08:56.
:08:56. > :08:59.was quite obvious that people were aware that Lord Lucan wasn't dead.
:08:59. > :09:03.Lady Lucan, I am quite convinced, didn't think he was dead, in fact
:09:03. > :09:05.she said to me he was a gambler - gamblers don't commit suicide, they
:09:06. > :09:08.always win the next hand. Shortly afterwards, Bob received further
:09:08. > :09:11.confirmation that Lucan was indeed alive and well. This time, a
:09:11. > :09:21.sighting from a reliable source, an eyewitness Even though at that time
:09:21. > :09:26.
:09:26. > :09:34.there were certainly grounds that he had murdered the nanny. After
:09:34. > :09:40.two or three minutes he was joined by another man who they were
:09:41. > :09:49.adamant was Lord Lucan. Surely you needed to investigate? Normally get
:09:49. > :09:54.approval, but for some reason, I was later told to continue the
:09:54. > :10:03.inquiry, I didn't have the proof to continue. Why do you think that
:10:03. > :10:10.happened? I have no idea. What do you think happened to Lord Lucan?
:10:10. > :10:14.think his gambling friends to come out of the country. So, what new

:10:23. > :10:30.of Jill, John Aspinall's former personal assistant he states quite
:10:30. > :10:36.clearly that she was a instructed to send Lord Lucan's children out

:10:50. > :10:50.
:10:51. > :10:58.to investigate further and it was refused. Was it said were Lord
:10:58. > :11:04.Lucan was hiding? No, I presume to John Aspinall helped Lord Lucan to
:11:04. > :11:09.get to Africa as a hideout. There is a small bit of evidence that
:11:09. > :11:12.leads you to believe that he is not alive any more, and that revolves
:11:12. > :11:19.around John Aspinall's final months before he died. Could you tell me
:11:19. > :11:23.that story? I was told that nothing else would be said, but at some
:11:23. > :11:33.point John Aspinall would make another press release in which he
