:10:47. > :10:49.She has Down's syndrome, her starring role here an indication

:11:03. > :11:06.A new test has been developed, much more accurate than
:11:07. > :11:11.it is potentially a step backwards. but for some, that is not good news,

:11:30. > :11:34.had the condition. she was when doctors told her Natty
:11:35. > :11:38.I had absolutely no idea what Down's syndrome really meant.
:11:39. > :11:42.I had very outdated images that came to the fore in my mind,
:11:43. > :11:49.I couldn't have been more wrong. away from view, institutionalised.
:11:50. > :11:59.How did you do that? bust those myths.
:12:00. > :12:03.The modelling came about because I had found so very much
:12:04. > :12:06.support in seeing other children doing ordinary, everyday things.
:12:07. > :12:09.But many parents still fear Down's syndrome.
:12:10. > :12:14.pregnancies are terminated. birth, nine out of ten
:12:15. > :12:17.Hayley believes that would change if parents were given a more
:12:18. > :12:22.balanced picture when they were told their baby has the condition.
:12:23. > :12:27.No one can predict what an unborn baby with Down's syndrome...
:12:28. > :12:33.or medically. intellectually or physically
:12:34. > :12:38.But the full set of information needs to be given to the parents
:12:39. > :12:42.and that includes the possibilities for children these days with early
:12:43. > :12:49.with Down's syndrome. wonderment of individuals
:12:50. > :12:58.Natty has changed our lives beyond measure.
:12:59. > :13:02.In Cornwall, this support group prepares welcome packs and a book
:13:03. > :13:05.for parents of new babies with Down's syndrome.
:13:06. > :13:12.Here too, there is concern. in the country where this happens.
:13:13. > :13:17.If the diagnosis was received and parents are being made to feel
:13:18. > :13:20.that the natural choice is to abort their child
:13:21. > :13:25.because of the Down's syndrome diagnosis, then that is a real worry
:13:26. > :13:31.screened out of existence. of society that will get
:13:32. > :13:35.There is a whole, rich, diverse population of the world
:13:36. > :13:38.that is not going to be here anymore and that would be a shame.
:13:39. > :13:44.showed Down's syndrome. with her daughter, test results
:13:45. > :13:48.She says she was repeatedly offered an abortion.
:13:49. > :13:52.The immediate reaction was to book me in for a termination,
:13:53. > :14:00.response to what my result was. and it was kind of just an automatic
:14:01. > :14:06.that is necessary. bit and I said I don't
:14:07. > :14:14.It is just not as bad as you think. she was given about the condition
:14:15. > :14:22.but you get there. it is obvious that happens,
:14:23. > :14:25.These parents' concerns about screening are being fuelled
:14:26. > :14:29.by the new test which is expected to be offered on the NHS soon.
:14:30. > :14:33.It is more accurate than what is used now.
:14:34. > :14:37.Hayley fears that without the right advice and support for parents,
:14:38. > :14:40.it could all but eradicate children with Down's syndrome.
:14:41. > :14:47.That has prompted her to step up her fight.
:14:48. > :14:50.She and Natty are travelling to Edinburgh where she will talk
:14:51. > :14:53.at an important conference of student nurses.
:14:54. > :14:57.She wants to challenge the negative messages about Down's syndrome.

:15:03. > :15:06.To be given the privilege of being able to speak at this
:15:07. > :15:09.conference, to hundreds of these students and to make a difference
:15:10. > :15:13.right now at the beginning of their medical careers, hopefully,
:15:14. > :15:19.will help other families that they encounter along the way.

:15:26. > :15:29.But first, I'm going to Great Ormond Street Hospital
:15:30. > :15:32.in London to find out more about the new test.
:15:33. > :15:36.It is called noninvasive pre-natal testing or NIPT.
:15:37. > :15:40.If you are expecting, you can already have an ultrasound
:15:41. > :15:44.scan and a blood test to see if there is a likelihood of Down's
:15:45. > :15:46.syndrome but it is not very accurate.
:15:47. > :15:49.If signs of the condition are spotted, you will be offered
:15:50. > :15:52.another test to be sure. It is called amniocentesis.
:15:53. > :15:56.Doctors use a needle to take some fluid from around the foetus.
:15:57. > :16:01.It is accurate but there is a small risk of losing the baby.
:16:02. > :16:06.NIPT involves testing the mother's blood for traces of the baby's DNA
:16:07. > :16:13.How is it going, OK? which children with Down's syndrome
:16:14. > :16:19.be offered on the NHS. study looking at whether NIPT should
:16:20. > :16:23.The current test will identify about 85% of the babies with Down's
:16:24. > :16:31.so it is more sensitive. identifies over 99%,
:16:32. > :16:34.And that means that fewer women will end up being offered
:16:35. > :16:40.have Down's syndrome. whether or not the baby does indeed
:16:41. > :16:45.from our society altogether? with Down's syndrome
:16:46. > :16:47.This isn't going to happen, there will still be people
:16:48. > :16:51.who do not want to have any Down's syndrome screening and even those
:16:52. > :16:54.that are identified by being at an increased chance of having
:16:55. > :16:56.Down's syndrome, some still declined because they wouldn't do anything.
:16:57. > :17:00.And we have shown that women with the diagnosis made safely
:17:01. > :17:03.still feel that is what they want, they want the information
:17:04. > :17:05.and they do not want to terminate the pregnancy.
:17:06. > :17:10.So I think these fears are ungrounded.
:17:11. > :17:15.But for Hayley, those fears are real.
:17:16. > :17:17.She and Natty have arrived at the student nurses conference,
:17:18. > :17:19.more determined than ever to press home their message.
:17:20. > :17:23.Hayley, how are you feeling, are you all prepped?
:17:24. > :17:27.I am prepped, I am ready to go, I think.
:17:28. > :17:37.LAUGHTER and wiping doughnut off

:23:03. > :23:05.That was going to be part of the celebrations.
:23:06. > :23:09.Mr Wood took another ?6,000 from Marie's account and a week
:23:10. > :23:15.It was really substandard. a gazebo arrived.
:23:16. > :23:23.of the legs up with one hand. and my son picked one
:23:24. > :23:30.been used before. and I think it probably had
:23:31. > :23:32.Mr Wood agreed to replace the damaged gazebo and 24 hours
:23:33. > :23:36.before the wedding, some workmen arrived with a different model.
:23:37. > :23:40.Then, his excuse was, he hadn't got any octagonal shaped
:23:41. > :23:44.ones, so would we have this round one?
:23:45. > :23:51.half of the roof here. and then realised they had only got
:23:52. > :23:56.bits and pieces. missing and some other
:23:57. > :23:59.The heater, the fridge, bits and pieces were missing.
:24:00. > :24:02.So they went away, left all the tools, things scattered
:24:03. > :24:07.Friday morning. they would be back first thing
:24:08. > :24:10.Bear in mind, we were getting married Friday afternoon.
:24:11. > :24:14.No one did ever turn up. We went off and got married.
:24:15. > :24:17.We didn't have a gazebo for the wedding and at that point,
:24:18. > :24:22.we were thinking, we are ?8,500 out of pocket.
:24:23. > :24:29.from the credit card company. did get their money back -
:24:30. > :24:32.Mr Wood said to us that Marie was clearly unhappy and he offered
:24:33. > :24:41.her a replacement. and that he had found
:24:42. > :24:49.heard nothing since. the whole order and that he has
:24:50. > :24:53.So, plenty of allegations of poor quality goods for loads of money.
:24:54. > :24:57.Some people don't get any furniture and they still end up in court.
:24:58. > :25:10.Cheryl Squibb runs a home furnishing and carpet business.
:25:11. > :25:19.for the whole family to relax in. cash on a nice summerhouse
:25:20. > :25:22.She was looking for something like this but the ones being offered
:25:23. > :25:26.by Hampshire Garden Furniture came with a big discount.
:25:27. > :25:30.I just wanted to know a little bit more about them, I was advised
:25:31. > :25:34.a site survey would be done to confirm that I could have one.
:25:35. > :25:44.After the show, there was bad news. to have the survey and to secure
:25:45. > :25:48.Cheryl's grandson was taken seriously ill with meningitis.
:25:49. > :25:51.Understandably, her priorities changed.
:25:52. > :25:54.I cancelled the appointment on the proviso that I would re-book.
:25:55. > :25:58.But in all honesty, my brain was all over the place,
:25:59. > :26:06.What happened next? the news we had been given.
:26:07. > :26:09.I received a letter from Mr Wood saying that I had signed a contract,
:26:10. > :26:17.wanted his payment. it was on its way and he
:26:18. > :26:21.But despite her protests, Cheryl ended up in court,
:26:22. > :26:28.signed by Cheryl. ordered document apparently
:26:29. > :26:31.How do you think your signature is on an order and invoice document?
:26:32. > :26:36.my knowledge at all. but it was done without
:26:37. > :26:40.I have done nothing wrong, I work for every penny I have got.
:26:41. > :26:42.I built my own business over ten years and have
:26:43. > :26:48.gone without everything. Now I am having to pay this man.
:26:49. > :26:52.We have spoken to a number of people who told us the same story,
:26:53. > :26:56.that they thought they were signing up to guarantee a trade show
:26:57. > :27:01.couldn't get out of. it was a contract they
:27:02. > :27:04.Mr Wood told us he didn't believe anyone would sign an order
:27:05. > :27:07.by mistake and said he was obliged to take people to court
:27:08. > :27:11.because these were bespoke items, difficult to resell.
:27:12. > :27:17.This is our first day and this is the only one for 4,000 anywhere.
:27:18. > :27:22.Actually, he offers this discount at every show.
:27:23. > :27:26.Mr Wood didn't want to be interviewed for the programme
:27:27. > :27:30.about the unhappy customers left in his wake who claimed
:27:31. > :27:33.they were either misled about what they were signing up for,
:27:34. > :27:40.or who had received the wrong items, damaged goods or nothing at all.
:27:41. > :27:47.years and had good reason to do so. people to court over the last ten
:27:48. > :27:50.We have talked to similar businesses, the same size
:27:51. > :27:53.as Mr Wood's who say they have never taken legal action against anyone.
:27:54. > :27:58.As for Mr Wood's customers, they say they have lost thousands
:27:59. > :28:09.This worked out lovely, cheers! business with Hampshire

:28:13. > :28:15.shows and that is where he meets people.
