:00:07. > :00:14.Hello from Stonehenge in Wiltshire. Here is a look at night's programme.

:00:15. > :00:21.We head to Romania on the trail of a new bomb detector with links to a

:00:22. > :00:35.Somerset fraudster. You are crazy people. What do you want? What is

:00:36. > :00:39.the BBC? What is the big deal? Stonehenge, one of the world's

:00:40. > :00:45.earliest musical instruments. We know that Stonehenge is special for

:00:46. > :00:57.all sorts of reasons, I am positive it has a critical qualities. Bases

:00:58. > :01:02.Inside Out West. `` this is. Now, it was a ruthless scam run by a

:01:03. > :01:06.Somerset businessmen. Jim McCormick made millions from a device that he

:01:07. > :01:12.claimed detect with bombs. Last year, he was convicted of fraud and

:01:13. > :01:17.sentenced to ten years in prison. We have uncovered new evidence that a

:01:18. > :01:25.European telecommunications company is developing a similar device. The

:01:26. > :01:33.twisted wreckage of a suicide bomb in Iraq. An almost daily event that

:01:34. > :01:42.destroys lives and shatters hopes of innocent people here. This man lost

:01:43. > :01:48.his three sons as they unloaded watermelons at this market stall. I

:01:49. > :01:53.will always remember them. They used to sit with me, laugh, have a good

:01:54. > :02:04.time, they were good boys. It has been months since someone has called

:02:05. > :02:15.me dad. His boys are among thousands of Iraq who have perished in similar

:02:16. > :02:19.ways. `` Iraqis. Jim McCormick claimed he had the answer, a device

:02:20. > :02:27.that could detect explosives. It can penetrate walls. Once it finds the

:02:28. > :02:35.same frequency, the antenna says... That is where the frequency is

:02:36. > :02:41.coming from. The government of Iraq spent $85 million on them, but they

:02:42. > :02:50.were useless. Car bombs continued to destroy lives while Jim McCormick

:02:51. > :02:56.grew rich. It was an international scam, but after an extensive police

:02:57. > :03:01.investigation, he was finally brought to justice and sentenced to

:03:02. > :03:11.ten years in prison. Guilty, the British businessman who sold fake

:03:12. > :03:17.bomb detectors to war`ravaged countries. Jim McCormick, who has

:03:18. > :03:24.been convicted of fraud, enjoyed a lavish life. The detectors were

:03:25. > :03:28.based on a novelty golf ball finder and knew they did not work. You may

:03:29. > :03:33.have thought that that would be the end of it, but we have discovered a

:03:34. > :03:40.new device has been patented in Romania, a device that looks

:03:41. > :03:46.suspiciously like Jim McCormick s. The company behind it says it has

:03:47. > :03:51.received European Union funding to research bomb detecting equipment.

:03:52. > :03:57.So, we are going to Romania to confront the scientist involved in

:03:58. > :04:09.its development. What do you want? What is this BBC? What is the big

:04:10. > :04:14.deal? I am on my way to Somerset to see a man who knows more than most

:04:15. > :04:24.about the bomb detectors. He helped to make the thing. Ian, nice to see

:04:25. > :04:28.you. This is your factory? Yes. Ian had no reason to suspect he was

:04:29. > :04:33.doing anything wrong. He had orders to make all sorts of components for

:04:34. > :04:37.all sorts of industries, and Jim McCormick was another customer, but

:04:38. > :04:45.in 2010 he got a surprise. The pleas came along and started their

:04:46. > :04:50.investigation into what looked like possible fraudulent activity. We did

:04:51. > :05:02.not make any more at that point A while later, we were asked by the

:05:03. > :05:06.customer, ATSC, to ship the tools to Romania. This was a copy of the

:05:07. > :05:13.customs invoice that were sent to us by ATSC. It was to be sent to Mira

:05:14. > :05:21.Telecom in Romania. That is your contact. There was a phone number as

:05:22. > :05:27.well. What happened then? You sent it to Romania? The ATSC arranged for

:05:28. > :05:37.a transport company to pick them up. That is everything? The whole kit?

:05:38. > :05:42.Yes. So, why words Jim McCormick sends the tools to Mira Telecom I

:05:43. > :05:45.have come to meet the police officer who was in charge of the

:05:46. > :05:50.investigation. Your investigation to queue around the world. Did you come

:05:51. > :05:58.across a Romanian connection? Yes, we did. We uncovered a number of

:05:59. > :06:02.invoices and paperwork that linked ATSC, Jim McCormick's company, to a

:06:03. > :06:13.Romanian company called Mira Telecom. There were invoices for

:06:14. > :06:20.devices and part. `` parts. What was Mira Telecom doing with ATSC? Where

:06:21. > :06:28.they agents? There was the business of cables being supplied to ATSC.

:06:29. > :06:38.There was a person there that worked for Mira Telecom and there were

:06:39. > :06:42.clear is this associations. It turns out that the president of Mira

:06:43. > :06:48.Telecom and Jim McCormick go back a long way. We know that a new device

:06:49. > :06:53.has been patented. It is one that looks remarkably like Jim

:06:54. > :06:56.McCormick's. The promotional video for the device was sensational to

:06:57. > :07:02.say the least. So were the claims made for the product itself. When I

:07:03. > :07:08.interviewed him for Points West in 2009, he claimed that the cards that

:07:09. > :07:14.went into the card reader where the key to how the device worked. He

:07:15. > :07:21.said different cards could even detect dollar bills. This is tuned

:07:22. > :07:29.to a channel. When the card is inserted, it looks for that

:07:30. > :07:34.frequency. The BBC had the cards tested and found they were nothing

:07:35. > :07:46.more than shoplifting tags. There is nothing to programme in these cards.

:07:47. > :07:49.. How similar is the new device that has been patented in Romania? I have

:07:50. > :07:56.come to Cambridge University to find out. Doctor Michael Sutherland was

:07:57. > :08:01.an expert witness at the trial of Jim McCormick. He proved that it did

:08:02. > :08:09.not work. How would you compare with what you see here too that of the

:08:10. > :08:13.device? I had a look at this, and as far as I could tell, it is the same

:08:14. > :08:18.device. It has a battery and a flashing light, and actually, a

:08:19. > :08:29.little bit of circuitry. Can I be clear? They are one and the same

:08:30. > :08:33.thing? The working principle of both devices is the same, it is

:08:34. > :08:39.identical. Even with the battery and the flashing light, it cannot

:08:40. > :08:44.possibly work? I have had a look at some of the scientific explanations,

:08:45. > :08:48.and I do not buy it and neither do some of the other experts. Based on

:08:49. > :08:52.the physics behind it, I cannot see any way that this device could work.

:08:53. > :09:00.There is not enough strength in these electromagnetic signals. It

:09:01. > :09:07.cannot happen. If this new device has no chance of working, how have

:09:08. > :09:12.they managed to patent it. We have come to Bucharest to find out. It is

:09:13. > :09:19.where the headquarters of Mira Telecom is. Its clients include the

:09:20. > :09:26.Romanian government. Bucharest is also where the Romanian patent

:09:27. > :09:31.office is, and its director has agreed to talk me through the new

:09:32. > :09:37.device's patent. This is the device or the device, yes? The patent is

:09:38. > :09:46.the title of propriety. It is your own invention, protected by this

:09:47. > :10:01.propriety title. It means you can sell it, licensing, and market it.

:10:02. > :10:07.Do they test it? No. Presumably I do not need to prove to you that my

:10:08. > :10:12.invention actually works? No. But it is in your interest to have it

:10:13. > :10:21.working because this is the purpose of the patent. It is an effective

:10:22. > :10:27.tool to get rich. A valuable document for him to have, then? Yes.

:10:28. > :10:34.Whether or not it works! It should work. To get this patent room, they

:10:35. > :10:43.only needed to prove that it worked in theory. `` to get this through.

:10:44. > :10:55.One of the names on this patent is a name... Dr Marian Apostol. He works

:10:56. > :10:58.at the Institute of Atomic Physics. Three weeks ago, when we contacted

:10:59. > :11:06.him, he invited us here and said he would demonstrate the device for us.

:11:07. > :11:10.He said he would only speak to us if we were prepared to broadcast a

:11:11. > :11:19.public apology for our previous coverage of the Jim McCormick

:11:20. > :11:25.device. He wanted us to say... Plainly, we told him that we were

:11:26. > :11:30.not prepared to do that. You told us that he was not prepared to talk to

:11:31. > :11:35.us. So, we try him one more time and tell him that we are outside his

:11:36. > :11:41.institute. To our surprise, he agreed to see us. Dr Marian Apostol.

:11:42. > :11:47.You are crazy people. You are really crazy. What you want? What is this,

:11:48. > :11:55.the BBC? What is the big deal? I do not care. I do not care. Dr Marian

:11:56. > :12:00.Apostol, can I ask you? Very quickly, can I ask you, the new

:12:01. > :12:05.device, why do you think your new device is any better than... Because

:12:06. > :12:15.I am an expert in this field, and I know what I am talking about! But Dr

:12:16. > :12:23.Marian Apostol... Please... I do not take money for lying! For my wife or

:12:24. > :12:30.for anyone! It is fraudulent. I am convinced about what I am talking

:12:31. > :12:38.about! Maybe I am wrong, but the scientific people are saying that

:12:39. > :12:48.they should disprove me. Not the BBC! Not you! Not the fake experts!

:12:49. > :12:51.Sorry! Let's have a copy! Your new device is going to work and you are

:12:52. > :13:03.making it, you are manufacturing it is Jamaat are you manufacturing a

:13:04. > :13:08.new device? Would you like a copy? He took us to this cafe and demanded

:13:09. > :13:15.that the BBC apologise for its previous coverage. He told us he was

:13:16. > :13:26.paid 900 euros a month by Mira Telecom. That was a quite bizarre

:13:27. > :13:32.conversation with Dr Apostol during which he elaborated at length about

:13:33. > :13:40.his scientific theories about this new device. He admits he was

:13:41. > :13:45.involved in the development of it and he remains convinced that it

:13:46. > :13:52.works and that the ADE`651 worked and that the British court of law

:13:53. > :13:58.was wrong. Dr Apostol was actually a defence witness at the Jim McCormick

:13:59. > :14:06.trial, telling the court that he had tested the ADE`651 many times and it

:14:07. > :14:21.performed well. He gave that testimony via a video link to the

:14:22. > :14:26.boardroom of Mira Telecom. Mira Telecom ayes`mac website says it has

:14:27. > :14:32.received a non`refundable grant of 750,000 euros from the European

:14:33. > :14:42.Union to research detection equipment for explosives and drugs.

:14:43. > :14:49.The president of the company is based in that building. We have been

:14:50. > :14:54.trying to contact him for three weeks by e`mail, telephone, but we

:14:55. > :15:05.have had no response. I think it is time to go there and see if he will

:15:06. > :15:22.talk to us. We have come to see Mr Stelion. Is he not here? Can I go

:15:23. > :15:30.and ask? OK. No problem. Can we see if he is in? Thank you. He was not

:15:31. > :15:38.in and we were forced to turn off our camera and told to leave. But

:15:39. > :15:45.not before leaving a message for him to contact us. We waited for him to

:15:46. > :15:51.get back to us but we heard nothing. In the morning, we tried again to

:15:52. > :16:03.contact him. Hello. Should I speak to Stelion? Again, we were told he

:16:04. > :16:10.was not available. So, another bomb detector practically the same as the

:16:11. > :16:15.ADE`651 may soon be on the market but the legacy of the old one is

:16:16. > :16:18.still being felt around the globe. We asked our international news

:16:19. > :16:25.teams to investigate what has happened to the ADE`651 since

:16:26. > :16:28.McCormick's conviction. It is still at use at checkpoints in Iraq

:16:29. > :16:37.including outside the BBC's own building in Baghdad. It is also used

:16:38. > :16:41.in Lebanon, Kenyon and Egypt. It has come to my attention that one of my

:16:42. > :16:49.constituents has been selling bomb detectors that don't work. David

:16:50. > :16:57.Heath was one of the first politicians to lobby the covenant to

:16:58. > :17:06.back the ADE`651. We know the legacy of the ADE`651 and now there is a

:17:07. > :17:15.new product almost the same. What do you think of that? The UK Government

:17:16. > :17:19.must take a very strong line. Through the EU, I hope we can at

:17:20. > :17:24.least make a noise about this Romanian device and make sure the

:17:25. > :17:32.authorities there know what is going on. Would it surprise you that the

:17:33. > :17:35.company we are talking about has received a grant from Europe to

:17:36. > :17:42.develop bomb detecting equipment? Yes. First of all, presumably, if

:17:43. > :17:47.they are receiving that money, somebody has checked if their work

:17:48. > :17:52.is legitimate or not and certainly this is an aspect of their work

:17:53. > :17:57.which isn't. Secondly, you would expect them to be able to show that

:17:58. > :18:02.they are legitimate and if they are selling this device or thinking of

:18:03. > :18:10.it or even developing it as a bomb detector then that is not legitimate

:18:11. > :18:15.and should be investigated. Legitimate it certainly was not But

:18:16. > :18:23.they're still being used at checkpoints around the world. Now a

:18:24. > :18:29.new incarnation has been developed by a company that says it has

:18:30. > :18:35.received European Union money. Our findings will be raised in

:18:36. > :18:38.Parliament this week amid dismay and incredulity that the legacy of

:18:39. > :18:48.McCormick's bogus detectors continues.

:18:49. > :18:53.These world`famous stones have baffled generations but now a new

:18:54. > :19:02.theory suggests that how Stonehenge sounds could be more important than

:19:03. > :19:06.how it looks. Stonehenge is the ultimate

:19:07. > :19:13.archaeological riddle. To solve that I must take a road trip. I'm going

:19:14. > :19:18.to Wales, almost as far west as you can go because that is where the

:19:19. > :19:25.bluestones of Stonehenge came from. More than 4000 years ago. They must

:19:26. > :19:34.have been something really special to Stone Age man. They were four

:19:35. > :19:45.tonnes each the same as a fully loaded Transit van. Why take those

:19:46. > :19:53.stones all that distance? I am meeting Paul Devereux, an

:19:54. > :20:11.archaeologist who has made a discovery. Hello. We meet 183 miles

:20:12. > :20:15.from Stonehenge. He is leading a project sponsored by the Royal

:20:16. > :20:20.College of Art looking for evidence of a prehistoric landscape. How

:20:21. > :20:27.might it have looked and sounded to Stone Age man? Why are we in this

:20:28. > :20:33.desolate spot? Because it is desolate. We wanted a pristine

:20:34. > :20:40.landscape that would be the same as the Stone Age and we wanted to try

:20:41. > :20:47.to record what Stone Age eyes and ears would have seen and heard. Most

:20:48. > :20:51.people think of landscape in visual terms but we also wanted to think of

:20:52. > :21:00.it in acoustic terms and this turned out to be an acoustic landscape But

:21:01. > :21:03.it is not just about keeping quiet and listening, it is about the

:21:04. > :21:11.noises that Stone Age man would have made. Normally if you hit a rock

:21:12. > :21:28.then it will sound like that. A percentage of the rocks here are

:21:29. > :21:42.ringing rocks. RINGING. That is incredible. It is like a

:21:43. > :21:45.bell. You could play a tune. We have had percussionists here who have

:21:46. > :21:56.played proper percussion pieces with the rocks. It is rock music! But how

:21:57. > :22:03.do we know that Stone Age man was aware that these bluestones made a

:22:04. > :22:08.noise? You can see these broken rocks and it was probably a

:22:09. > :22:15.Neolithic quarry. This rock here may have been intended to be a blue

:22:16. > :22:27.stone and go to Stonehenge. Like a Stonehenge offcuts. We did a test

:22:28. > :22:33.that and it is resonant. The team have tested thousands of rocks at

:22:34. > :22:39.these hills and have to scuppered hotspots like this quarry were over

:22:40. > :22:48.40% of them `` up to 40% of them ring. Why would you take them from

:22:49. > :22:52.here all the way to Stonehenge? The one thing that hasn't been

:22:53. > :22:58.considered is the idea that sound might have been an important factor.

:22:59. > :23:05.So do you think we have concentrated for too long on how it looks? I

:23:06. > :23:13.think that most of archaeology has been a silent movie but now we are

:23:14. > :23:21.looking at sound. I am bringing this sounds back to Stonehenge. There are

:23:22. > :23:30.two definite notes here. I'm need one more card and I can be Status

:23:31. > :23:46.Quo. This really is quite exciting. It is

:23:47. > :23:50.7:30am and we are in Stonehenge and English Heritage has given us

:23:51. > :23:58.permission to try to sound the bluestones. Chances like this don't

:23:59. > :24:06.happen every day and the team have jumped at the opportunity to test

:24:07. > :24:11.these stones. If the theory is right then Stonehenge should sound similar

:24:12. > :24:16.to the rocks in the mountain. Some of them are set in concrete sort

:24:17. > :24:31.their resonance will be dampened down. Can we just the hating world

:24:32. > :24:32.Heritage sites? `` hitting. I have some plastic membranes so we don't

:24:33. > :25:00.directly hit the rock. This is stones and number 62. I

:25:01. > :25:04.would think if that was freestanding or supported with space all around

:25:05. > :25:12.then it would probably ring. There is something else interesting here.

:25:13. > :25:17.Pieces have been knocked out here. They must have been detached by

:25:18. > :25:24.hammering at some point in the past. Do you think it crumbled because

:25:25. > :25:33.people could have been sounding it? It is possible. And it is in that

:25:34. > :25:47.part where there is more resonance. I never thought I would say this but

:25:48. > :25:50.let's go and hit more of Stonehenge. So how might we ringing rocks early

:25:51. > :25:56.strike a chord with what we already know of Stonehenge? We know it is

:25:57. > :26:02.special for many reasons so it is likely that the stones themselves

:26:03. > :26:13.had other properties so it is quite likely they had acoustic properties.

:26:14. > :26:19.This site is a Theatre of performance where symbolism,

:26:20. > :26:24.astronomy, other parts of a symbolic life are going on here and sound and

:26:25. > :26:31.colour play a vital role in how that building functions. The weak link in

:26:32. > :26:35.the story is the fact that they could have just brought ones that

:26:36. > :26:43.make noises by mistake. How do we know that the specifically to

:26:44. > :26:48.please? We don't. But we can say that prehistoric attitudes must have

:26:49. > :26:55.been different to the ones we have today. We think of stones is being

:26:56. > :27:05.very inept but we still talk about the living rock as if it has a life

:27:06. > :27:11.and presence in the landscape `` in,

:27:12. > :27:24.I am going to get my recording from Wales and we can compare them. We

:27:25. > :27:34.can play the sounds from Wales and if the theory is right then it

:27:35. > :27:44.should sound fairly similar. TAPPING AND RINGING.

:27:45. > :27:52.We know these have been reset and moved so they will not ring. These

:27:53. > :27:59.also rested on the ground and could resonate freely but the cannot now.

:28:00. > :28:09.We have the bluestones in Wales and the bluestones of... Wales. And they

:28:10. > :28:13.both ring. That's about all we have time for

:28:14. > :28:19.the night and indeed for this series. Before we go there is just

:28:20. > :28:22.time to tell you about a special flooding debate happening in which

:28:23. > :28:27.we will be joined by those who have lived through the floods and by

:28:28. > :28:33.those in power whose job it is to stop it happening again. That is

:28:34. > :28:43.tomorrow night at 10:35pm on BBC One. Don't forget to keep in touch

:28:44. > :29:08.with us via Twitter or e`mail. Thanks for watching.

:29:09. > :29:17.Hello. The 92nd update. The Oscar Pistorius trial has begun in South

:29:18. > :29:24.Africa. He pleaded not guilty to murdering his girlfriend at his home

:29:25. > :29:29.last year. A neighbour said she had terrible screams on the night.

:29:30. > :29:35.Russia sends more soldiers into Ukraine and will stay there until

:29:36. > :29:42.the crisis comes down. A corporal killed herself and her Wiltshire

:29:43. > :29:46.barracks, today a coroner said bullying and an alleged rape were

:29:47. > :29:48.two factors. A good night for
