:00:54. > :00:57.he died, Nelson Mandela's body was finally buried near his home in Qunu
:00:58. > :01:03.on the Eastern Cape. We have witnessed events celebrating and
:01:04. > :01:09.honouring the life of Madiba, as he is affectionately known. This final
:01:10. > :01:14.set piece was a full state funeral, mixing military pomp with tribal and

:41:36. > :41:43.come. STUDIO: My goodness, me! That was an
:41:44. > :41:50.extraordinary sight. He has been standing bowed as if he could hardly
:41:51. > :42:09.walk, that is clearly not the case. Who is Mr Mandela? Where is he? How
:42:10. > :42:24.do I see him? This man is in the placid shroud of the Lord God
:42:25. > :42:28.Almighty. -- the placid shroud. -- blessed shroud. He followed the
:42:29. > :42:43.commandments, love thy neighbour as you love yourself. Do unto others as
:42:44. > :42:47.you would have them do unto you. What were our brothers the Boers
:42:48. > :42:54.doing here? They came to South Africa, and what did they do? They
:42:55. > :43:02.found black people here and began saying, no, you or not God's
:43:03. > :43:09.children, we are God's children. We must keep you in the distance. And,
:43:10. > :43:19.you know, when you go to pray, you must be by yourselves.
:43:20. > :43:25.And when it comes to hospitals, we can't be with you in the same
:43:26. > :43:32.hospital, you must be there, there. Schools, oh, schools. Our children
:43:33. > :43:39.will be spoiled by mixing with the black people. No, no, no. We will
:43:40. > :43:50.put our children here, your children there. Segregation. Segregation.
:43:51. > :43:54.That is not God's commandment. God's commandment is love your
:43:55. > :43:58.neighbour as you love yourself. That enable it is regardless of colour,
:43:59. > :44:03.that neighbour is regardless of faith, that neighbour is regardless
:44:04. > :44:10.of anything else. -- that neighbour is regardless of colour. This great
:44:11. > :44:21.young man we worship today came and said no, no, no, no. My Boer
:44:22. > :44:31.friends, you can't go on like this. Madiba showed us the way. Whether
:44:32. > :44:37.you are white, black, yellow or brown, you all God's children. Come
:44:38. > :44:48.together, work together and we will show you the way.
:44:49. > :44:57.APPLAUSE Do unto others as you would have them do to you. God almighty,
:44:58. > :45:03.bless him and all others like him, who have come to know the importance
:45:04. > :45:11.of what he has brought to us all. Amen.
:45:12. > :45:23.STUDIO: Kenneth Kaunda, the former president of Zambia.
:45:24. > :45:35.We are moving towards the wrapping up of the programme as we invite
:45:36. > :45:54.Bishop Z Siwa to deliver as brief sermon as possible.
:45:55. > :46:01.The life we mourn and celebrate today, is contrary to William
:46:02. > :46:17.Shakespeare's Mac Beth, when he says, alt brief candle. Life is but
:46:18. > :46:23.a walking shadow. A poor player who fusses on the stage and is heard no
:46:24. > :46:37.more. It is a tale told by an idiot, full of sounds and fury, signifying
:46:38. > :46:47.nothing. This life is not brief, and its impact will be with us for many
:46:48. > :46:51.years to come. It is life which will continue to echo on the stage of
:46:52. > :46:56.life for many years to come. It is not a tale told by an idiot, for it
:46:57. > :47:05.had no sound and fury, but instead, has been and will continue to lose
:47:06. > :47:11.with dignity, meaning, integrity and focus, it is not simply
:47:12. > :47:23.entertainment on the stage, but quality actions that led to our
:47:24. > :47:30.transforming outcomes. We will forever salute you and long for more
:47:31. > :47:41.of those quality actions that lead to more transformation in our time.
:47:42. > :47:47.Nelson Mandela lived a life that sent rays of hope to those he is
:47:48. > :47:54.leaving behind. May that continue. The best tribute we campaign today
:47:55. > :47:59.is to strive that our lives become both recipients and transmitters of
:48:00. > :48:05.the life of hope and vibrations of the life to others. As we bid Nelson
:48:06. > :48:08.Rolihlahla Mandela good night, waiting for the morning of the
:48:09. > :48:14.Resurrection, the fitting tribute will be that to strive for the
:48:15. > :48:23.fulfilment of his dream, to the family I want to leave this image
:48:24. > :48:32.with you. The Bishop of St George's Cathedral, Windsor, England wrote,
:48:33. > :48:35.what is dying? A ship's sales and I stand watching until she fades on
:48:36. > :48:43.the horizon and someone at my side says, she is gone. Gone were? Gone
:48:44. > :48:49.from my site, that is all. She is as large as when I saw her. The
:48:50. > :48:57.diminished size and total loss of sight is in me, not in her. She is
:48:58. > :49:02.gone. Just at the moment when someone at my side says, she is
:49:03. > :49:06.gone, there are others who are watching her coming and their voices
:49:07. > :49:14.take up the glad shout, there she comes, and that is dying. Well done,
:49:15. > :49:18.good and faithful servant. We will always cherish the life you shared
:49:19. > :49:22.with the people of this nation. May God bless you all, in the name of
:49:23. > :49:33.the Father, the sun and the holy spirit, amen.
:49:34. > :49:42.STUDIO: Bishop Z Siwa of the church of South Africa. We can now hear
:49:43. > :49:47.from Cyril Ramaphosa. Lastly, a word of thanks to the hysteria committee
:49:48. > :49:56.and the funeral planning committee that arranged everything over the
:49:57. > :49:59.last ten days -- the ministerial committee. I think they did a
:50:00. > :50:05.sterling job and they need to be congratulated. We would like to say
:50:06. > :50:11.to the people of South Africa, thank you. Thank you for giving Madiba the
:50:12. > :50:20.best sendoff of all time and for giving him a dignified funeral and a
:50:21. > :50:22.great memorial time during the past ten days. Thank you very much. Thank
:50:23. > :50:43.you. STUDIO: so the lieutenant generals,
:50:44. > :50:49.the chiefs of the different services, take their place around
:50:50. > :50:55.the coffin. The pallbearers will carry the coffin now, senior Chief
:50:56. > :50:59.warrant officers. They have been the bearer party of the ceremonial of
:51:00. > :51:17.recent days. Again, interestingly, they are led
:51:18. > :51:27.by the Master Chief warrant Officer, who fought with MK, the military
:51:28. > :51:35.wing of the ANC. The coffin still draped in the South African flag
:51:36. > :51:43.now. It will be put back on the gun carriage, and gun salutes will be
:51:44. > :51:54.taken up the hill to the site where Nelson Mandela is to be buried. The
:51:55. > :52:00.family are following Nelson Mandela's grandson with the
:52:01. > :52:05.headband. They are walking up the hill to this place, the burial site.
:52:06. > :52:20.Other members of the family are buried. Archbishop Tutu, the former
:52:21. > :52:24.Archbishop of Cape Town. Jesse Jackson there, the civil rights
:52:25. > :52:31.leader from the United States, a great friend of Nelson Mandela. He
:52:32. > :52:34.has been on marches and speaking for Nelson Mandela. The tall figure
:52:35. > :52:41.there who was at the ceremonies at the airport yesterday as well. The
:52:42. > :52:54.military responsible for moving the coffin. It is called a tractor. It
:52:55. > :53:11.gives tractor is a good name. Behind it it draws the gun carriage.
:53:12. > :53:22.The coffin being Braun down the hill to the grave site, where members of
:53:23. > :53:26.the family and senior distinguished foreign visitors will gather for
:53:27. > :53:32.this part of the funeral and his actual burial, in the ground he
:53:33. > :53:41.wanted to be buried in, on his own land in Qunu.
:53:42. > :53:50.They took a miniature flag from the top of the coffin, handed over to
:53:51. > :53:55.the Chief of staff, who will hand it to the president, a presentation to
:53:56. > :54:00.the next of kin. Orders, decorations and medals are meant to be included
:54:01. > :54:04.there. In the background there, I think that is the president just
:54:05. > :54:05.getting up in the little marquee which has been set up there,
:54:06. > :54:30.receiving those. On the right-hand seat therein the
:54:31. > :54:34.marquee with the headband, Mandla Mandela, the senior member of the
:54:35. > :54:46.family now, grandson of Nelson Mandela.
:54:47. > :54:57.We will remember Nelson Rolihlahla Mandela. To the family and friends
:54:58. > :55:07.of our late commander in chief, may God soothe your grief, may God
:55:08. > :55:14.sanctify your memories. May the grace of the Lord be sufficient, now
:55:15. > :55:23.and whenever the longing becomes on bearable. -- unbearable. Rest in
:55:24. > :55:33.peace. Yours was truly a long walk to Freedom. And now you have
:55:34. > :55:35.achieved the ultimate freedom in the bosom of your maker, God Almighty.
:55:36. > :55:56.Amen. Now helicopters with the South
:55:57. > :56:01.African flag over the grave site. Much as he would have had at the
:56:02. > :56:06.time of his inauguration. Jets from the South African Air Force coming
:56:07. > :56:22.in from Pretoria here. Streaming smoke as they come across Qunu.
:56:23. > :56:32.A final salute to the Commander in chief and former president of South
:56:33. > :56:34.Africa. The sound of a 21 round salute at the same time as the fly
:56:35. > :57:03.past. The Last Post followed by reveille.
:57:04. > :57:08.The military pallbearers, the senior officers will now salute and
:57:09. > :57:13.withdraw. This has become a very private moment. I think the cameras
:57:14. > :57:17.of the South African broadcasting Corporation, which we have been
:57:18. > :57:23.using, have themselves withdrawn from the grave site and left this as
:57:24. > :57:28.a private moment for the family. And the remainder of the funeral did
:57:29. > :57:34.indeed stay private, concluding with a committal service, a vote of
:57:35. > :57:38.thanks and a benediction. And so ends an extraordinary powerful
:57:39. > :57:42.sendoff for a great man. Everyone from statesman to people watching in
:57:43. > :57:47.the crowd, has tried to find the words to describe their feelings for
:57:48. > :57:52.Nelson Mandela, their affection for his warmth and sparkle, their
:57:53. > :57:56.admiration for his stoicism, their pride in his courage and
:57:57. > :58:00.steadfastness. And their determination not to let his vision
:58:01. > :58:06.died. His is a story which will take its place among the great legends of
:58:07. > :58:11.our times, a story so extraordinary, that in 100 years, and 100 years
:58:12. > :58:20.more, people will still say, what a man. From Pretoria, goodbye.
:58:21. > :59:48.Our beloved Nelson Rolihlahla Mandela has departed.
:59:49. > :59:50.Amazing Grace, how sweet the sound, amen.
