:00:04. > :00:14.More from us at the top of the hour. Now, it's time for NewsWatch. This

:00:14. > :00:24.

:00:24. > :00:28.week, the move of Breakfast to a Welcome to NewsWatch. Later, these

:00:28. > :00:35.men have made it through to the run-off in the French presidential

:00:35. > :00:39.election, should we agree on how to pronounce their names? First, it is

:00:39. > :00:44.2 1/2 weeks since Breakfast moved to Salford. It went more smoothly

:00:44. > :00:47.than many predicted that some viewers object to the look of the

:00:47. > :00:57.studio and others question the value and cost of the whole

:00:57. > :00:59.

:00:59. > :01:07.exercise. # Move on up! # It was almost a decade since the mood was

:01:07. > :01:11.first mooted. It was the year it since it first opened. The transfer

:01:11. > :01:17.of a daily show has been the biggest step yet in the migration.

:01:17. > :01:27.Around half of the team moved but Sian Williams and Chris Hollins let

:01:27. > :02:05.

:02:05. > :02:08.the show go without them. There It may be possible to change the

:02:08. > :02:15.colours and atmosphere but he was would have to get used to the show

:02:15. > :02:20.coming from Salford. Is it a welcome and economical evolution or

:02:20. > :02:25.an extravagant and damaging example of political correctness? In a

:02:25. > :02:31.moment, I'll put that to the man who oversaw the move to Salford.

:02:31. > :02:35.Before that, the views of two viewers, Jonathan Evans in

:02:35. > :02:41.Birmingham and Ann Keith in Cambridge. Ann Keith, what you make

:02:41. > :02:47.of the move to Salford and has it affected your viewing? It was

:02:47. > :02:52.totally unnecessary. The BBC is a national broadcaster and I think if

:02:52. > :02:58.it moves to a region for its make up it, it stands -- runs the risk

:02:58. > :03:06.of being a regional broadcaster instead of a national one. How do

:03:06. > :03:10.you think the move has affected Breakfast? The studio set up his

:03:11. > :03:18.rather cramped. It is not as pleasant as the London set-up was.

:03:18. > :03:22.And also, I think the quality of presentation has declined. Do you

:03:22. > :03:27.think too many down the lines as opposed to live guests make a

:03:27. > :03:32.difference? Yes, I do. Because when politicians were able to come into

:03:32. > :03:38.the studio, it seemed more immediate and the interviewers were

:03:38. > :03:46.able to approach them in a more direct way. Jonathan Evans, what do

:03:46. > :03:51.you make of the move? I disagree, it was a bad mistake, London is a

:03:51. > :03:56.world centre, not just an English or UK centre. I think a programme

:03:56. > :04:02.like Breakfast should be located in London long term. It will affect

:04:02. > :04:07.the quality of the programme. I think the news programmes should be

:04:07. > :04:12.consolidated in one centre in London as opposed to putting it in

:04:12. > :04:18.Manchester. You may as well have put it in Edinburgh or Dublin. It

:04:18. > :04:23.needs to be in London. Would you think of the argument that the BBC

:04:23. > :04:29.is to Metropolitan and this is a move to recognise the rest of the

:04:29. > :04:34.country. I do not agree when it comes to a programme like a news

:04:34. > :04:39.programme, it should be located where the news is. London is a

:04:39. > :04:44.worldwide centre. It is not just a UK centre. And it has cost too much

:04:44. > :04:49.money which has been wasted in doing that. Why do think it has

:04:49. > :04:53.cost too much and why is it a waste? The management team at the

:04:53. > :05:00.BBC made a big mistake because they are trying to cut costs and at the

:05:00. > :05:05.same time they spent 200 million relocating to Manchester. They

:05:05. > :05:13.spent 80 million on redundancies and retraining and lost 54% of the

:05:13. > :05:18.team. What is the point? It is a political gesture. Ann Keith, do

:05:18. > :05:27.you miss Sian Williams? Yes, very much. I think the present present

:05:27. > :05:30.is now on not as serious as a Sian Williams was on many occasions. She

:05:30. > :05:37.did good interviews which I have not heard from the current team

:05:37. > :05:45.with the exception of Charlie Stayt and Bill Turnbull. Thank you very

:05:45. > :05:50.much. Adam Bullimore is deputy editor of Breakfast. I know you're

:05:50. > :05:57.not responsible for the decision but logistically, how well has done

:05:58. > :06:02.it gone? Amazingly well. It is a hugely complex business moving 83

:06:03. > :06:10.hour network news programmes like Breakfast 200 miles from the mother

:06:10. > :06:15.ship. And to be three weeks in and to have had very few technical

:06:15. > :06:19.issues, to have had a clean programme and the quality of the

:06:19. > :06:26.output we have had for the first few weeks for the audience to have

:06:26. > :06:31.held up and stuck with us, I think we're really pleased. What do you

:06:31. > :06:36.have to say to viewers like Ann Keith and Jonathan Evans who say

:06:37. > :06:41.the move was not necessary and has cost far too much? Well, the move

:06:41. > :06:47.is part of a wider commitment by the BBC to spread the value of the

:06:47. > :06:52.licence the around the UK. We and now in the centre of the UK in

:06:52. > :06:58.Salford, not just the North of England. And we think we can make

:06:58. > :07:03.the Breakfast people know and love in Salford. By definition, you

:07:03. > :07:09.simply can't get the same quality of guests actually on the sofa, the

:07:09. > :07:14.top politicians, the top authors. The UK is a London-based Society

:07:14. > :07:18.and she will have to do more down- the-line interviews which uses the

:07:18. > :07:26.sense of presence and intimacy. Well, we have had a top guests all

:07:26. > :07:31.ready. Not the same number. Even in West London, some top guests would

:07:31. > :07:37.not sit on the sofa. We ended up doing them down the line or pre-

:07:37. > :07:43.recorded. It is early days, we have had some great guests and we will

:07:43. > :07:49.continue to push for great guests. We reached 7 million people every

:07:49. > :07:54.day, the audience is a massive draw for people. But this week, we have

:07:54. > :07:58.had the Leveson Inquiry and the spin-offs of the problems faced by

:07:58. > :08:04.the Culture Secretary. You're not able to get any of those people

:08:04. > :08:11.live in the studio. I think the Leveson Inquiry is a difficult

:08:12. > :08:15.story to do in Salford. But the reality was, and is, we would

:08:16. > :08:20.always have done Leveson Inquiry from outside the High Court, the

:08:20. > :08:27.politicians who are commenting on the Leveson Inquiry would have gone

:08:27. > :08:31.into Westminster so it would have been down the line anyway. Other

:08:31. > :08:39.viewers have asked about travel cost, Susanna Reid is commuting.

:08:39. > :08:45.Who pays? Well, it doesn't matter if you are a top presenter or a

:08:45. > :08:50.junior researcher, the relocation packages available to staff of the

:08:50. > :08:56.same for everyone. But when that runs out they are responsible for

:08:56. > :09:01.their own costs? Yes, they are. We have had many complaints about the

:09:01. > :09:05.set. There are two areas of complaint, it seems small, the

:09:05. > :09:11.camera angles seemed to be in the present his face and people don't

:09:11. > :09:18.like the colours. Is this a small studio than Breakfast used to be

:09:18. > :09:22.from? Yes, it is. The studio we broadcast from is the NewsWatch

:09:22. > :09:30.studio. But we think we have the space we need. You would expect

:09:30. > :09:34.some comment, people on the whole do not like change. Those of your

:09:34. > :09:39.interactions came in the first 48 hours but after that they had dried

:09:40. > :09:46.up and people are now talking about the stories. We are pleased with

:09:46. > :09:50.the set, we have made some changes and listened to some of the views

:09:50. > :09:54.and the tight shots some people had a problem with we are more Lisa and

:09:54. > :10:01.relaxed in the way we should programme. And I think the reality

:10:01. > :10:04.is, we are still settling in and still finding the best angles and

:10:04. > :10:09.best shots and getting used to the environment. Frankie very much

:10:09. > :10:18.indeed. Just time for a quick mention of last weekend's French

:10:18. > :10:28.presidential election. The runner- up was Nicholas... He is Mishal

:10:28. > :10:35.Hussain. Exit polls show Sar-ko-ZEE trials. The official BBC

:10:35. > :10:45.pronunciation is Sar-KO-zee. Although it is not took the like of

:10:45. > :10:50.

:10:50. > :10:54.You might expect them to get the name of the Challenger right. This

:10:54. > :11:02.is how Jane Hill put it. We have been waiting for the last half an

:11:02. > :11:12.hour to here from the victorious candidate in the first round of

:11:12. > :11:21.
