:00:26. > :00:30.Welcome to Newswatch. Coming up: De website story that appeared before

:00:30. > :00:35.the events it describes. Allegations of political bias made

:00:36. > :00:40.by London's mayor. Are we obsessed with murder?

:00:40. > :00:45.Be for that, the most thrilling Day in the history of English club

:00:45. > :00:52.football. Manchester City snatching the Premiership title from their

:00:52. > :01:02.local rivals. More importantly, the Queen's car come -- Queen's Park

:01:02. > :01:16.

:01:16. > :01:20.don't know what I'm talking about, More complaints followed on Monday

:01:20. > :01:30.when the victory parade was shown that life on the news channel for

:01:30. > :02:08.

:02:08. > :02:14.At least with the Premiership over, we will be football free until the

:02:14. > :02:18.end of summer. We? Know it. Over the rest of this week, BBC News has

:02:18. > :02:24.been sacking the manager of -- following the sacking of Liverpool

:02:24. > :02:30.manager. It looks like there will be plenty more soccer to come in

:02:30. > :02:35.the next few weeks. So why all of this football on the news? I am

:02:35. > :02:41.joined by Richard Burgess, the head of sports news at the BBC. I

:02:41. > :02:45.confess I was actually at the game on Sunday. For those of us there,

:02:45. > :02:50.it was a very exciting occasion. But what do you say to the millions

:02:50. > :02:57.of viewers who either hate football have no interest? We understand

:02:57. > :03:01.that not all of the audience are sports fans. But I think this was

:03:01. > :03:06.certainly an event in football that almost transcended sport. For a

:03:06. > :03:13.number of reasons. The dramatic last-minute nature of the win. He

:03:13. > :03:21.was against their nearest rivals. They had not won the title in 44

:03:21. > :03:26.years. And they are owned by wealthy bonus. It was a combination

:03:26. > :03:32.of factors which made it a very good story. One that would appeal

:03:32. > :03:38.to none sports events. A number of US say that we don't object to the

:03:38. > :03:46.coverage of such events in the news bulletins, but that you only did it,

:03:46. > :03:51.in a series age, it should not lead the news. I think we still continue

:03:51. > :03:54.to cover those very serious issues. But sport is an important part of

:03:55. > :04:03.the fabric of our society. The millions of people spend money on

:04:03. > :04:08.argue that the scenes you saw on Monday, the celebration scenes,

:04:08. > :04:13.were great to see. People were so happy. News should not just be

:04:13. > :04:19.about bad news. It also has to be about reflecting on the joy of

:04:19. > :04:24.people. But was the news channel right to show more than two hours

:04:24. > :04:31.life on Monday evening of those victory celebrations? I think it

:04:31. > :04:36.was a big live event. Certainly the audience figures reflect that

:04:36. > :04:39.audiences of the Channel enjoy watching big life events. You saw

:04:39. > :04:45.the newspapers the following day. We don't judge ourselves by them,

:04:45. > :04:48.but there were pictures all over the front pages of that Parade.

:04:48. > :04:54.don't you think sport should stay in the sports section of the news

:04:54. > :05:00.rather than overriding things like potential collapse of the euro?

:05:00. > :05:03.think it does. I work in sport and we understand that we have to know

:05:03. > :05:09.our place in the general scheme. thans

:05:09. > :05:16.than sport often. But it is something that excites the nation.

:05:16. > :05:24.A large part of the nation enjoying it, a passionate about it. It's

:05:24. > :05:32.number of complaints on a slightly different topic, the new set. The

:05:32. > :05:35.comments range from it too much distracting moving images,

:05:35. > :05:41.reflections on the table of the presenters, some people find it too

:05:41. > :05:47.dark. Have you got the setting right yet always there a need to

:05:47. > :05:52.tweak it? We are very pleased with the new said. It is quite modern.

:05:52. > :05:58.And we have had a lot of quite positive feedback. We take on board

:05:58. > :06:03.change change sets, they would be to

:06:03. > :06:07.everybody's taste. We understand that and we listen to the feedback.

:06:08. > :06:13.Thank you. One source of information about

:06:14. > :06:23.Manchester City's parade was the BBC News website. But it may have

:06:24. > :06:24.

:06:24. > :07:06.Apology for the loss of subtitles for 42 seconds

:07:06. > :07:13.been a bit too eager to get the We are told that a version of the

:07:13. > :07:20.story had been prepared to run at 6pm and was inadvertently made life.

:07:21. > :07:26.Also provoking reaction among viewers was a run of stories on a

:07:26. > :07:30.Breakfast. Police arrest a second person on suspicion of murder after

:07:30. > :07:33.a house fire kills five children. Jennifer had son has fend

:07:33. > :07:42.prosecutors after her former brother-in-law was convicted of

:07:42. > :07:50.killing three people in her family. John Baxter rang us with these

:07:50. > :07:55.thoughts. I have been watching this morning's news. The two leading

:07:55. > :08:01.items are long stories about murder. And then we have a Sirte story

:08:02. > :08:06.about a murder. Why on earth is the BBC spending so much time on

:08:06. > :08:11.murder? The most high-profile complaint about the news this week

:08:11. > :08:18.came from the recently re-elected mayor of London, Boris Johnson.

:08:18. > :08:23.During the mayoral campaign, he wrote, he sometimes felt his chief

:08:23. > :08:30.opponent was the local BBC News. He described the prevailing view in

:08:30. > :08:35.the newsrooms as corporate us, defeatist, NT business, Euro-phile,

:08:35. > :08:42.and biased to the left. Corporations -- he added that we

:08:42. > :08:52.need a Tory end no mucking about. Typically colourful views, and not

:08:52. > :08:52.

:08:52. > :09:40.Apology for the loss of subtitles for 42 seconds

:09:40. > :09:46.isolated ones. Several viewers Our research suggests that

:09:46. > :09:52.audiences continue to trust our journalism. Whatever the outcome, a

:09:52. > :09:56.commitment to impartiality poor remain. On Wednesday, the BBC Trust

:09:56. > :10:00.announced its inclusions on plans to save money. The strategy known

:10:00. > :10:10.as delivering quality first. Following a public consultation,

:10:10. > :10:14.some planned cuts such as those to local radio, have been scaled back.

:10:14. > :10:24.But some news summaries are to disappear. That will be no great

:10:24. > :10:30.

:10:30. > :10:35.Finally, most parts of the UK have seemed more rain this week. That

:10:35. > :10:39.may bring a groom for many of us but maybe it shouldn't.

:10:39. > :10:49.headline for today is drier and brighter. That will be welcome

:10:49. > :11:14.
