:00:26. > :00:30.Welcome to the programme. Later: Should Andy Murray's semifinal

:00:30. > :00:35.victory have displaced the local news?

:00:35. > :00:40.For us, question time has been a staple of the BBC schedule for many

:00:40. > :00:46.years. The format is simple. A studio audience puts questions

:00:46. > :00:49.towards a panel, typically containing a politician and two

:00:49. > :00:54.orders. One of last week's programme was John Leyden,

:00:54. > :00:59.previously known as Johnny Rotten. You do agree that a crime has been

:00:59. > :01:09.committed it? The former punk rocker's appearance divided viewers.

:01:09. > :01:43.

:01:43. > :01:47.This Dior was less amused: -- He had to go. This isn't the first

:01:47. > :01:56.time Question Time guests have aroused controversy. Pop stars have

:01:56. > :02:01.appeared before. As have comedians. They are allowed to strike. And I

:02:01. > :02:07.thought... Newspaper journalists. The other most disloyal of

:02:07. > :02:17.creatures ever. And the winners of reality TV shows. I do not have a

:02:17. > :02:39.

:02:39. > :02:49.2 million house. She wielded a Again, others disagreed, such as

:02:49. > :02:56.

:02:56. > :03:00.We were here four years ago at... What about the audience? Some

:03:00. > :03:10.viewers have wondered how it is selected. This view work is unhappy

:03:10. > :03:26.

:03:26. > :03:30.Achieving balance in the audience has been the goal of question time

:03:30. > :03:34.since it started. To face the public's questions, I enjoyed by

:03:34. > :03:39.the executive producer of Question Time. What was the thinking behind

:03:39. > :03:44.putting Johnny Brighton on the programme? The sex Pistols and

:03:44. > :03:50.Johnny Rotten had legendary status. A lot of their audience will

:03:50. > :03:53.remember that. We thought it would be quite good to get him on on the

:03:53. > :04:00.programme made up to the Queen's Jubilee. We found that he was a big

:04:01. > :04:09.fan of Question Time it could not make it that week. We talked about

:04:09. > :04:13.may be getting him and for another show and we look -- looked at dates.

:04:14. > :04:20.Another view was says the BBC likes provocative questions and extreme

:04:20. > :04:26.guests. You like stirring things up. Was Johnny Rotten almost too well-

:04:26. > :04:30.behaved for your biking? I think some of the people who have

:04:30. > :04:38.criticised his performance almost wanted him to give us a torrent and

:04:38. > :04:42.volley of abuse and have me fired. Because they didn't get that, they

:04:42. > :04:47.were disappointed. You do have pop stars and people from reality shows.

:04:47. > :04:52.Is that designed to attract a younger audience? It is designed to

:04:52. > :04:55.broaden the appeal of the programme as much as possible. What Question

:04:55. > :05:00.Time has managed to do over the years, particularly as we went to a

:05:00. > :05:05.fifth panellist on the show, is to broaden the franchise. There was a

:05:05. > :05:10.feeling it was becoming too much of a prisoner of Westminster. If it

:05:10. > :05:17.was just dominated by politicians all the time, it was largely

:05:17. > :05:20.beginning to exclude a large part of the audience. The beauty of

:05:20. > :05:25.Question Time is that it does bring in a much broader audience and

:05:25. > :05:29.shines a light on what is going on at Westminster. I think having

:05:29. > :05:33.these independent, freewheeling, outspoken people does help to

:05:33. > :05:38.broaden the franchise in that sense. Is it the danger that sometimes

:05:38. > :05:43.they may not be as well-informed as your average member? Undoubtedly

:05:43. > :05:47.that can happen. Everybody who comes on the programme has been

:05:47. > :05:56.stowed -- spoken to at length by a team to find out if they know

:05:56. > :06:01.enough about the stories of the day. On this occasion, Johnny Rotten on

:06:01. > :06:06.three separate occasions, came out with really good points. He had

:06:06. > :06:13.things to say about the libel scandal. He had a very pretty --

:06:13. > :06:19.provocative thing to say about the legalisation of drugs. We have had

:06:19. > :06:29.other people on whom have had the nerve to get to them, which is

:06:29. > :06:29.

:06:29. > :06:36.understandable. One political question from this dealer. He wants

:06:36. > :06:41.to know why you, in the days of the collision, why did give a separate

:06:41. > :06:47.slot for by the Conservatives and the Lib Dems. He argues that a

:06:47. > :06:52.unbalances things. We are all on different territory with the

:06:52. > :06:55.coalition government. The point is the next election will be fought by

:06:55. > :07:01.the three parties individually. They are still very separate

:07:01. > :07:05.parties. What we tend to do, as we did last week, is we have a

:07:05. > :07:10.minister on who is actually a Liberal Democrat and we will seek

:07:10. > :07:14.to have a more independent, free- thinking Conservative backbencher.

:07:15. > :07:19.We do not seek to put on a Lib Dem minister and a Conservative

:07:19. > :07:23.minister. We will put on a minister from one of the party's and a

:07:23. > :07:26.backbencher from one of the other parties. I think if we did not do

:07:26. > :07:31.that we would be in serious danger of on the representing one of the

:07:31. > :07:35.major political parties in the country. And you heard a viewer

:07:35. > :07:41.complained about rows of left wing people in the audience. Had you

:07:41. > :07:46.choose the audience? We do achieve balance. Every member of the

:07:46. > :07:51.audience is spoken to by the research team and their voting

:07:51. > :07:57.intentions are recorded. The past voting record is also recorded.

:07:57. > :08:07.They are compiled with all that in mind. We have a fair proportion of

:08:07. > :08:09.all parties. Thank you. What else has the attention of BBC

:08:09. > :08:17.News for viewers this week? Wimbledon officio murders can show

:08:17. > :08:20.they hope of a British men's winner for another year.

:08:21. > :08:27.After the disappointment came the painful public display of that

:08:27. > :08:31.disappointment. The support has been incredible.

:08:31. > :08:36.But before the figure at the triumph and tears, here is a

:08:36. > :08:46.parting shot from one dealer and the decision to show his semifinal

:08:46. > :09:02.

:09:02. > :09:12.on BBC One instead of the scheduled The complaints continued beyond the

:09:12. > :09:19.

:09:19. > :09:24.end of the tournament, with this of It has been a week of technical

:09:24. > :09:28.problems for the BBC's internet services. A major technical issue

:09:28. > :09:31.meant the side went down temporarily on Wednesday evening.

:09:31. > :09:35.For a couple of days, the news website's selection of the day's

:09:35. > :09:45.most popular stories actually shared material that was a month

:09:45. > :10:08.

:10:08. > :10:14.The BBC apologised for the problem, which was fixed by Thursday.

:10:14. > :10:24.Finally, it was goodbye this week to one bastion of the BBC News. Up

:10:24. > :10:25.

:10:25. > :10:29.until now it was the home of the BBC World news service. The service,

:10:29. > :10:35.which has programmes in 28 languages, has been broadcast from

:10:35. > :10:40.the building since 1941. The BBC is now moving out and into a new

:10:40. > :10:46.extension of Broadcasting House. We are also moving their after next

:10:46. > :10:50.week. This was the final sign-off from Bush House on Thursday.

:10:50. > :11:00.the World Service and the news goes on, just not from here. From Bush

:11:00. > :11:02.

:11:02. > :11:12.House, that's the BBC News. This UN in-out asked to say: -- This They
