:00:26. > :00:34.This is the last Newswatch of the series and the last before you know

:00:34. > :00:43.what. Just a week to go and we are already seen traffic gridlock, a

:00:43. > :00:50.security nightmare and it is still raining.

:00:50. > :01:00.Since the start of last week the revelation that G4S has been unable

:01:00. > :01:26.

:01:26. > :01:30.to meet the demand for security has BBC reaction on the whole is, let's

:01:30. > :01:33.ignore all that and not inflate the problems of one dodgy security

:01:33. > :01:41.contract. For on Monday, as competitors

:01:41. > :01:51.started arriving from all over the world. The an American athlete

:01:51. > :01:57.

:01:57. > :02:03.spent four hours on a coach and got lost on the way to London. The next

:02:03. > :02:13.day there was more bad news with the announcement that more than

:02:13. > :02:45.

:02:45. > :02:49.half the football tickets had been respond to those views I am joined

:02:49. > :02:56.by the senior editor of the BBC News Channel. Mind-boggling

:02:56. > :03:01.negativity, is that what you see it as. In a word, No. It is not our

:03:01. > :03:06.job to rubbish the Games. It is not our job to be a cheerleader for the

:03:06. > :03:16.Games. We do not sit around and say to one another, let's dig really

:03:16. > :03:17.

:03:17. > :03:25.deep. These are actual events. If they happened. It is arguably news.

:03:25. > :03:29.But how to get the tone and proportion right? It is what you

:03:30. > :03:33.take away from the massive coverage. We have been covering the positive

:03:34. > :03:40.side. We have been talking about the preparations that have been

:03:40. > :03:44.going well. Of the stadiums and the venues are ready and fabulous. We

:03:44. > :03:49.have been looking ahead to the British medal hopefuls. We have

:03:49. > :03:56.been talking to the volunteers. We have been examining why we are so

:03:56. > :04:02.good at sitting down sports. And the torch relay is something that

:04:02. > :04:08.has captured a mood. Is there is sense that before events actually

:04:09. > :04:16.happen you are looking for stories? In June we had some Polish ladies

:04:17. > :04:22.complaining about exaggerated coverage of racism in Poland. To a

:04:22. > :04:26.great extent there was not any problem with racism in the event.

:04:26. > :04:33.Is the same thing happening now? Before an event takes place you are

:04:33. > :04:38.going to talk about what goes well and what goes not well. Going back

:04:38. > :04:42.to the Olympics if you have a contract to serve security for the

:04:42. > :04:52.Games and two Pixar to say you cannot supply the staff promised,

:04:52. > :04:56.

:04:56. > :05:04.that is not just news, but big news. How do you balance Olympic

:05:04. > :05:09.coverage? We are the Olympic broadcaster. We have a fantastic

:05:09. > :05:15.amount of coverage. We have invested a lot into the stuff that

:05:15. > :05:20.will be on television. The sport is going to be just fantastic. The

:05:20. > :05:24.news will cover the sport and also the issues. If there are no

:05:24. > :05:30.problems with security on day one and then we will report that. When

:05:30. > :05:35.all the athletes arrived earlier in the week, yes, one of the viewers

:05:35. > :05:42.complained that one of the coaches got lost. But apparently it was

:05:42. > :05:48.smooth sailing. It was pretty easy. It was a piece of cake. Our support

:05:48. > :05:57.to -- report to use security with a smile. I thought that was a

:05:57. > :06:01.balanced piece of journalism. you very much indeed. The next

:06:01. > :06:06.Newswatch will appear in September. It will be from a new studio in

:06:06. > :06:10.central London. We have been broadcasting here for eight years.

:06:10. > :06:13.Numerous viewers have had heavier say about BBC News. A good

:06:13. > :06:18.opportunity to look back on some of the points we have been making on

:06:18. > :06:25.the programme. I am reporting from Croydon. A lot

:06:25. > :06:35.of BBC correspondents bring us from locations that have little

:06:35. > :06:36.

:06:36. > :06:42.relevance to the situation. Another issue for me is whether effect some

:06:42. > :06:48.reports. I recently saw a reporter standing near Scotland Yard. I

:06:48. > :06:54.don't remember what she was talking about because I was too interested

:06:54. > :07:01.in whether her umbrella would turn inside out.

:07:01. > :07:07.Back in 2004, when you were objected strongly to report some

:07:07. > :07:11.fighting in a post-war Iraq. The only people you talk about are

:07:11. > :07:16.the terrorists and people fighting them. It is not what I expect from

:07:16. > :07:22.the BBC. I thought it was an opportunity for

:07:22. > :07:29.the BBC to have a shake-up. Once you hit 50 or thereabouts you

:07:29. > :07:36.are invisible. That is something that has to change.

:07:36. > :07:44.The relaunch of a business programme prompted this exchange.

:07:44. > :07:47.The format was so completely changed. To see someone making a

:07:47. > :07:55.dress was absolutely extraordinarily. I thought the

:07:55. > :08:02.programme was awful. I am going to admit that for the first programme

:08:02. > :08:09.the making of close thing was an item that went wrong. -- clothes.

:08:09. > :08:17.BBC senior executive admitting that something was wrong! This panel has

:08:17. > :08:24.been an issue. Welcome to Question Time. I am not

:08:24. > :08:31.opposed to any other parties. They should be unquestioned time. But

:08:31. > :08:35.the BNP is fundamentally different. His racism acceptable? If it has

:08:35. > :08:44.enough votes to have to get that question.

:08:44. > :08:54.Newswatch had a field day with the royal wedding. He seems proud and

:08:54. > :08:56.

:08:56. > :09:00.relaxed. Watch the body language and looks and gestures between them.

:09:00. > :09:04.Kate Middleton will need to tread softly when making her designer

:09:04. > :09:13.choices. The British fashion industry has spread their dreams

:09:13. > :09:17.under her feet. Last year the website pick up a story from the

:09:17. > :09:23.Israeli press that a stray dog had been condemned to death by a Jewish

:09:23. > :09:27.rabbinical court. The story turned out to be inaccurate. It is

:09:27. > :09:31.disappointing to think the BBC has a herd mentality. Just because

:09:31. > :09:36.somebody else publishes it, they publish it. It is disappointing to

:09:36. > :09:41.think that when it is an unusual sounding story that you would not

:09:41. > :09:48.spend five minutes fact-checking it. Within five minutes you would find

:09:48. > :09:53.out that it was totally made up. Fabricated, unsubstantiated. It is

:09:53. > :10:02.an American pop star, not some latter-day Messiah. I thought to we

:10:02. > :10:12.had a day and a moment. It was as if it was a national event. It was

:10:12. > :10:13.

:10:13. > :10:19.not. How on earth will you cover a national event? I think it was a

:10:19. > :10:26.bad mistake. I think London is a world centre, not just an English

:10:26. > :10:30.or UK centre. Breakfast should be located in London. Long-term it

:10:30. > :10:34.will affect the quality of the programme.

:10:34. > :10:39.The accusation debt is too much sport and especially football on

:10:39. > :10:43.the news has been common over the years. Here is one dealer at the

:10:43. > :10:47.time of the last World Cup. Here it is inescapable. It is everywhere

:10:47. > :10:54.you look. Do we have to have pundits discussing the flexibility

:10:54. > :11:00.or temperament of the ball? The England goalkeeper made a bit of a

:11:00. > :11:05.pig's ear of a safe earlier in the week. He does not want to be

:11:05. > :11:10.reminded of it. Thank you to all of those who have contributed to the

:11:10. > :11:16.programme. We hope you will continue to do so. This is my last

:11:16. > :11:24.chair. Newswatch will get a new presenter. It has been a privilege

:11:24. > :11:31.and a pleasure to hear your views. Please carry on sharing your
