:00:00. > :00:17.Perhaps don't park your car underneath the tree if you can help

:00:18. > :00:22.it. Did the christening of this little

:00:23. > :00:28.chap distracts from coverage of a crucial Select Committee enquiry? I

:00:29. > :00:37.have had a great, great career at United. Sir Alex Ferguson releases

:00:38. > :00:42.his autobiography. Is it a news event?

:00:43. > :00:43.Does the use of graphics in news reports help or hinder our

:00:44. > :00:53.understanding of the story? Two prominent events took place on

:00:54. > :01:01.Wednesday afternoon: Prince George's christening and a Select

:01:02. > :01:14.Committee enquiry. I don't think we can give an apology at the moment. I

:01:15. > :01:18.suggest you can. But as MPs grilled offices, the infant prince of the

:01:19. > :01:51.Royal family were arriving at Saint James 's Palace.

:01:52. > :01:56.We asked the controller of the BBC News channel for a response to these

:01:57. > :02:29.complaints. Anti`football `` onto football

:02:30. > :02:35.royalty and a complaint, that the sport gets excessive NPR coverage.

:02:36. > :02:49.Sir Alex Ferguson released his autobiography this week.

:02:50. > :02:54.He's the most successful and feared manager in British football history,

:02:55. > :02:59.but now, Sir Alex Ferguson is having to adjust to life without the

:03:00. > :03:06.trophies and acclaim. After 27 years at the top of the game, I asked him

:03:07. > :03:13.if he got out of the right time. I am relieved we won the league as my

:03:14. > :03:20.last act. That was important. To be honest with you, our time had come.

:03:21. > :03:24.Many viewers felt it was not appropriate for the release of his

:03:25. > :03:54.book to be given such extensive airtime.

:03:55. > :04:17.The head of the BBC newsroom responded to that issue.

:04:18. > :04:26.Someone who divides opinion every time is the comedian Russell Brand.

:04:27. > :04:35.How come I feel so cross with you? It can't be because of that beard.

:04:36. > :04:39.It's gorgeous! You are a very trivial man. An interview with him

:04:40. > :05:01.on Newsnight prompted this response from Robert.

:05:02. > :05:18.Many TV news reports use graphics to help illustrate a story. Television

:05:19. > :05:22.graphics have come a long way since a camera was pointed at a map on a

:05:23. > :05:34.wall with place names stuck on with pins. Now whole new worlds can be

:05:35. > :05:36.conjured up in a studio. But they don't always go down well with

:05:37. > :05:57.viewers. What can be done is undoubtedly

:05:58. > :06:04.impressive, and in recent months, Virtual reality has conjured up what

:06:05. > :06:08.can be found on the sea bed and what might have happened in Oscar

:06:09. > :06:13.Pistorius's house the night his girlfriend died. Reporters have

:06:14. > :06:18.shown us were spending cuts could be made from a virtual treasury, and

:06:19. > :06:25.last week, what vaccines children can be given. Another viewer who

:06:26. > :06:41.remained unimpressed e`mailed: There are also concerns about less

:06:42. > :06:44.elaborate visions such as the treatment of this four`year`old

:06:45. > :07:05.killed by his mother and her partner.

:07:06. > :07:10.Another development on the website and television has been the use of

:07:11. > :07:16.calculators to help you work out, for instance, what class you belong

:07:17. > :07:19.to as well as the impact on us of fuel pack `` fuel price rises and

:07:20. > :07:42.inflation. So there is BBC News guilty of

:07:43. > :07:47.self`indulgence using various visual toys at its disposal or do they add

:07:48. > :07:59.significantly to viewers's understanding and enjoyment? Joining

:08:00. > :08:03.me to discuss this is the BBC's editor of visual journalism. The

:08:04. > :08:10.main complaints we have been getting have been about gratuitous desire to

:08:11. > :08:17.impress. That's not actually illuminating the news. No one sets

:08:18. > :08:22.out to do frivolous production techniques, no one sets out to

:08:23. > :08:26.design a graphic that is seen as a gimmick. But there is a fine line

:08:27. > :08:29.between that and something that grabs the viewer's attention, or

:08:30. > :08:37.something that conveys information in such a way that someone will

:08:38. > :08:41.watch and take notice. If we look at the gimmicky aspect, one of them is

:08:42. > :08:51.the smoke coming up from the Kenyan maul and whether that really added

:08:52. > :08:57.anything. Also things like the images of Daniel. People felt

:08:58. > :09:02.distracted by it. If I take the Newsnight won first, that is using a

:09:03. > :09:04.new piece of kit which allows the corresponding to control what is

:09:05. > :09:10.coming on graphically onto the screen. I thought, actually, as a

:09:11. > :09:14.storytelling technique where it showed where the attackers were

:09:15. > :09:19.coming into the maul, I thought it was really quite effective and

:09:20. > :09:25.useful. On Daniel, that is the first time I have seen that. I don't find

:09:26. > :09:33.it really very gratuitous, I must say. I was expecting something that

:09:34. > :09:39.was rotating faster and looking, in some way, disrespectful. I don't

:09:40. > :09:45.think it was. Does it suggest that viewers are as impressed as

:09:46. > :09:49.programme makers, perhaps? That's a real danger. That's why I am pleased

:09:50. > :09:54.to come on and be informed about what viewers are saying as well.

:09:55. > :10:00.Sometimes, we failed to get the balance right. But I want the view

:10:01. > :10:10.was to know that we are always striving to do it right. The other

:10:11. > :10:16.big issue is the idea of where stuff appears, for example on the website,

:10:17. > :10:23.and people have complained about that. The data was not properly

:10:24. > :10:30.scrutinised all looked properly done and is masquerading as strong

:10:31. > :10:38.factual sourced information. One thing I absolutely stand`by is art

:10:39. > :10:44.editorial values here and the fact that everything in, for example, the

:10:45. > :10:50.class calculator was absolutely scrutinised. So although the result

:10:51. > :10:54.might have been the tone was a little bit of fun, the academic

:10:55. > :10:59.underpinning of it was very sure`footed. The thing about

:11:00. > :11:04.calculators is they are one of the most popular things we do. The class

:11:05. > :11:11.calculator, 7 million page views for that. In 7 million people, you will

:11:12. > :11:15.get a fair amount of people who may have looked at it in full, I don't

:11:16. > :11:19.like that. But a huge number of people looked at it and really liked

:11:20. > :11:28.it and find these calculators put them at the heart of the story and

:11:29. > :11:33.make it relevant to them personally. That's all from us this week. If you

:11:34. > :11:41.want to share your opinions or even appear on the programme, you can

:11:42. > :11:50.call us or e`mail us. You can find us on twitter and do have a look at

:11:51. > :11:51.our website. We will be back
