:00:00. > :00:00.Now it is time for Newswatch. This week, we concentrate on the
:00:07. > :00:13.prominence given to the News of the sacking of David Moyes.
:00:14. > :00:20.Hello and welcome to the programme. Coming up... You are fired. The
:00:21. > :00:24.sacking of David Moyes by Manchester United receives extensive coverage
:00:25. > :00:29.on the news. Some viewers suggest that the priority given to it is an
:00:30. > :00:37.editors should force them to consider their own position. The two
:00:38. > :00:45.down under. Did the BBC help the tour with sycophantic coverage? Are
:00:46. > :00:52.actors would the mumbling or our news presenters guilty as well? ``
:00:53. > :00:56.guilty of mumbling. Football management is not secure
:00:57. > :01:01.profession so it was no great surprise that Manchester United
:01:02. > :01:07.dismissed David Moyes. Was it big news? Yes, according to most media
:01:08. > :01:14.organisations including the BBC. It was at the top of most of the
:01:15. > :01:18.bulletins. The dream job that turned into a nightmare. Ibid. Moyes is
:01:19. > :01:25.sacked by Manchester United. During his short term at the helm he was
:01:26. > :01:28.criticised and his team failed to qualify for the Champions League. We
:01:29. > :01:32.look at how it went so wrong so quickly. Hundreds of viewers were
:01:33. > :02:06.not convinced that the priority given was not justified. These are
:02:07. > :02:13.the thoughts of some of our viewers. One of our viewers joins us now. And
:02:14. > :02:18.we are also joined by the editor of the Six O'Clock News and the Ten
:02:19. > :02:26.O'Clock News. Thank you both. What was your objection to the coverage?
:02:27. > :02:44.In view of everything that is going on in the world, including the
:02:45. > :02:47.situation in the Ukraine, and fought to the news programmes lead on? It
:02:48. > :02:53.is the sacking of a football manager. If they lead on every
:02:54. > :02:56.single senior member of a large company that was dismissed, you
:02:57. > :03:05.would do nothing else but talk about that. What made you choose that news
:03:06. > :03:10.item? Let's ask him bad. We thought long and hard about what goes into
:03:11. > :03:21.the programme. `` lets as came about that. We knew that sport polarises
:03:22. > :03:25.people. In this digital case, we heard a story with a number of
:03:26. > :03:31.strong elements. `` in this particular case. It had a strong
:03:32. > :03:46.business, and a human element as well. It was also a strong global
:03:47. > :03:51.story. Manchester United is a global brand and distribute most around the
:03:52. > :04:04.world. Nothing was squeezed out or programme. `` and is recognised.
:04:05. > :04:10.What about the claim that nothing was squeezed out of the programme?
:04:11. > :04:17.To me, I got bored with the news. I was fed up with the conjecture about
:04:18. > :04:22.one person being sacked. I could understand it may be being an item
:04:23. > :04:28.of news. But given all the ball coverage that you already have,
:04:29. > :04:35.surely a discussion could have taken place on an alternative platform? It
:04:36. > :04:39.took up almost a quarter of the bullet and on Tuesday. Ukraine got
:04:40. > :04:50.two minutes. How was that proportionate? `` quarter of the
:04:51. > :04:59.bulletin. Ukraine has been comprehensively covered this week on
:05:00. > :05:03.all of our bulletins. There was no mention of Nigeria or South Sudan on
:05:04. > :05:08.your programme. No mention on the Six O'Clock News that date. But they
:05:09. > :05:15.were covered on the Ten O'Clock News. People turn onto your
:05:16. > :05:19.bulletins and they expect to get comprehensive news coverage. The
:05:20. > :05:25.Manchester United story would always have been in the programme whether
:05:26. > :05:34.it was at the top or the bottom. The Six O'Clock News and the Ten O'Clock
:05:35. > :05:37.News have different priorities. The way the BBC reports these stories is
:05:38. > :05:47.not necessarily good news reporting. It could be seen as
:05:48. > :05:50.feeding a tabloid hysteria. Is David Moyes responsible for the team
:05:51. > :05:56.losing on his own? That is very much of what the football industry would
:05:57. > :06:00.like it to be. We covered all aspects of the story, to do with the
:06:01. > :06:05.club and the commercial issues. At the heart of the story, when David
:06:06. > :06:09.Moyes was appointed, was the idea that like Sir Alex Ferguson, he
:06:10. > :06:14.would be given a recent duration of time to make a success of the job.
:06:15. > :06:21.Within one year he was out of the job. The World Cup lies ahead. What
:06:22. > :06:28.does the BBC need to change about how it covers the stories? Quite
:06:29. > :06:33.frankly, I think that sport is sport and should remain there. What is it
:06:34. > :06:37.about Manchester United? It is said that all club. Yes, they have a
:06:38. > :06:43.large commercial background. It is no bigger than many companies in
:06:44. > :06:50.this country. It has a lot of supporters. But other clubs probably
:06:51. > :06:53.feel the club should be given more airtime as well. There was an off
:06:54. > :06:55.the club should be given more airtime as well. There was an offer
:06:56. > :07:06.lot of time spent on football. You have all of the big programmes. ``
:07:07. > :07:13.an awful lot of time. Thank you both very much.
:07:14. > :07:19.Do let us know your thoughts on the priority given to foot all stories
:07:20. > :07:29.are any aspect of BBC News. `` football stories. We look now at BBC
:07:30. > :07:36.coverage of the Royal trip to Australia. The trip of the Duke and
:07:37. > :07:41.Duchess of Cambridge has been judged a great success. Here is a reminder
:07:42. > :07:46.of some of the Bordeaux opportunities. Prince George seemed
:07:47. > :07:53.a little bashful. But then a girl called his side. Not an entirely
:07:54. > :07:59.successful encounter. She retired in tears! Walking in the sand in which
:08:00. > :08:06.us cannot be easy but going barefoot was not an option. A visit to the
:08:07. > :08:13.zoo is a child's the light. There was an enclosure at the Sioux in
:08:14. > :08:26.Sydney, and a small animal for him to get to know. Pictures to warm the
:08:27. > :09:15.heart. `` an enclosure at the zoo. But some of our viewers noted...
:09:16. > :09:25.Like a a tricky subject on how the BBC handles the subject of
:09:26. > :09:29.independence in Scotland. Business per Scotland questioned why the BBC
:09:30. > :09:34.had not, like other organisations, resigned its membership of the
:09:35. > :09:40.Confederation of British Industry. On Thursday, the BBC announced it
:09:41. > :09:43.was suspending its membership. It said it was to protect its
:09:44. > :10:04.neutrality. That wanted one correspondent to write... ``
:10:05. > :10:09.prompted. Finally, the subject which occupied the audience feedback team
:10:10. > :10:14.was not news related, although some felt it had a relevance to news.
:10:15. > :10:20.Thousands complained that much of the dialogue in Jamaica In was
:10:21. > :10:34.inaudible, Lamy aired in part on mumbling from the actors. `` blaming
:10:35. > :10:58.it. A correspondent said... Mumbling was also on the mind of
:10:59. > :11:01.another correspondent. I will try and in and see it clearly and say
:11:02. > :11:23.thank you very much for all of your comments. If you want to share your
:11:24. > :11:37.comments get in touch with us. That's all for now. Thanks for
:11:38. > :11:44.joining us. Good evening. Good evening. Many of us will be glad to
:11:45. > :11:49.see the back of the date. It has been very wet for some of us. What
:11:50. > :11:55.does the weekend have in store? It will be windy for some of us. We
:11:56. > :11:57.should see some decent spells of
