:00:21. > :00:26.Silva as part of their corruption investigation. He described it as a

:00:27. > :00:30.date of this respect for democracy. Investigators are testing a knife to

:00:31. > :00:36.see whether it could be linked in the killing of the ex-wife of temp

:00:37. > :00:43.two and her friend. American researchers say they have

:00:44. > :00:51.discovered hide the Zika virus could damage the brain of unborn babies.

:00:52. > :00:59.Facebook is to change its tax arrangements in the UK. In 2,000

:01:11. > :01:18.o'clock Sophie will be here with a full round-up of the day's news.

:01:19. > :01:20.First, Newswatch. Hello and welcome to Newswatch

:01:21. > :01:23.with me, Samira Ahmed. Coming up on this programme: Awards

:01:24. > :01:25.were being given out in Hollywood on Sunday night, but the BBC's Oscar

:01:26. > :01:28.coverage receives brickbats, And how did this hoaxster get

:01:29. > :01:32.on The Victoria Derbyshire Show with a tale of misbehaviour

:01:33. > :01:34.on a flight he claimed It was lights, camera,

:01:35. > :01:43.action for BBC News on Monday morning as the public woke up

:01:44. > :01:47.to details of the 88th Academy Awards ceremony,

:01:48. > :01:49.held the night before in Los Breakfast featured several

:01:50. > :01:57.appearances of entertainment correspondent Lizo Mzimba

:01:58. > :01:59.in Hollywood, with a variety of guests and a studio

:02:00. > :02:03.discussion back home. We will come back to

:02:04. > :02:05.the films in a minute. The News Channel continued

:02:06. > :02:09.the Oscars coverage at nine o'clock with the Academy Awards

:02:10. > :02:12.leading its bulletin, to the disgruntlement

:02:13. > :02:15.of this viewer. Why was the first six minutes

:02:16. > :02:19.of the News Channel dedicated to the very shallow

:02:20. > :02:23.reporting of the Oscars? Yes, they should be reported at not

:02:24. > :02:27.as head of the news. At 9:30am there followed a 30 minute

:02:28. > :02:30.Oscar special with discussion And there is much more on the BBC

:02:31. > :02:38.News website about all of that, about the fashion, the films,

:02:39. > :02:41.the winners and losers. There was indeed much more

:02:42. > :02:44.about all of that on the BBC News website and the News Channel

:02:45. > :02:47.and BBC One bulletins continued to feature the subject

:02:48. > :02:50.throughout the day, Opinion was divided with Paddy Kelly

:02:51. > :02:56.writing: I thought the coverage But there was a minority view among

:02:57. > :03:22.those who contacted us, more typical was this

:03:23. > :03:45.from Iain Glen. So, what place should the Oscars

:03:46. > :04:00.are any entertainment story have And in the lead up to the renewal

:04:01. > :04:05.of the Royal Charter, should editors listen

:04:06. > :04:06.to Culture Secretary John Whittingdale, who may have been

:04:07. > :04:09.thinking of coverage of this kind when he argued this week

:04:10. > :04:11.that the soft news element of the BBC online services

:04:12. > :04:14.is of limited public value. Sam Taylor oversees BBC News's UK

:04:15. > :04:19.onkline operation and the BBC Sam, John Whittingdale was singling

:04:20. > :04:27.out online for too much soft news, as he saw it, about celebrities

:04:28. > :04:38.at the expense of this kind of core mission of news being

:04:39. > :04:40.about information and public value. A lot of our viewers complaining

:04:41. > :04:43.to Newswatch this week seemed to feel the same after seeing

:04:44. > :04:45.the Oscars coverage. I think it is fair to say, isn't it,

:04:46. > :04:49.that the Oscars is not in that part It is one of the biggest

:04:50. > :04:53.entertainment stories of the year. It is obviously got people talking

:04:54. > :04:57.here and around the world and this year it was a very strong story -

:04:58. > :05:01.the success of Leonardo DiCaprio after many years trying to get

:05:02. > :05:03.an Oscar, British success, but also this diversity debate,

:05:04. > :05:05.which was not played out on the fringes of the Oscars,

:05:06. > :05:09.it was played out on the very floor of the arena with Chris Rock

:05:10. > :05:11.making so many comments. It was a story, I think

:05:12. > :05:14.a very strong story, but I think the important thing

:05:15. > :05:17.to point out is that we handled it in different ways during

:05:18. > :05:19.the course of the day. Well, that is the point

:05:20. > :05:23.where we know there was a very big audience interest in finding out

:05:24. > :05:25.what had happened in the event which had happened

:05:26. > :05:28.while people were asleep. So, the web story we wrote

:05:29. > :05:31.about that was the most read news story on the site in the month

:05:32. > :05:34.of February around the world. News Channel and Breakfast audiences

:05:35. > :05:36.were higher than average. So, at that point there was a lot

:05:37. > :05:39.of prominance with the Oscars because we were bringing people up

:05:40. > :05:42.to speed about a story that clearly As the day progressed,

:05:43. > :05:46.of course, it moved down our running orders on the One and Six news

:05:47. > :05:50.on BBC One it was the end item of the programme bringing people up

:05:51. > :05:53.to speed on a big entertainment So, we did approach it in different

:05:54. > :05:57.ways, but we did that partly because of the different ways that

:05:58. > :05:59.people consume the news. In terms of the amount of airtime,

:06:00. > :06:02.though, particularly in the run-up to it as much as after,

:06:03. > :06:05.people felt there was an awful lot of standing around looking at a red

:06:06. > :06:08.carpet and commenting I mean, is that the kind of news

:06:09. > :06:12.that the BBC News Channel Is that not for other

:06:13. > :06:15.entertainment channels to do? I think if you are talking

:06:16. > :06:18.about the element in the morning, there was a very short period really

:06:19. > :06:21.in the morning where stars are working the red carpet before

:06:22. > :06:24.and then some of that afterwards, but that's where we got a fantastic

:06:25. > :06:26.interview on Breakfast with Mark Rylance, one of Britain's

:06:27. > :06:29.greatest actors who had just That was the breaking

:06:30. > :06:31.news reaction element. Of course, things

:06:32. > :06:33.finished pretty quickly. We did our Oscars special at 9.30am

:06:34. > :06:36.on the News Channel and BBC world News because things had wrapped up,

:06:37. > :06:40.it was a good point for us to sum everything up, do the story

:06:41. > :06:42.and move on, which we did. We actually moved on during the day

:06:43. > :06:46.to look more head on the issues of diversity and some of the more

:06:47. > :06:49.serious news stories to come out The morning after, then,

:06:50. > :06:52.it is very big in breakfast News. Nine o'clock, when the News Channel

:06:53. > :06:54.bulletin gets going, Given that there was the half-hour

:06:55. > :06:59.special to come at 9.30am, can you see why viewers thought why

:07:00. > :07:02.did it need to be six minutes at the top of the nine

:07:03. > :07:04.o'clock bulletin, as well? I think it is worth saying that

:07:05. > :07:08.that is the only hour in the whole day where the Oscars was the lead

:07:09. > :07:11.story on the News Channel Derbyshire and Breakfast lead

:07:12. > :07:14.on the story about NHS recruitment. The News Channel went on to lead

:07:15. > :07:17.on the trouble at the Nine o'clock is a very short

:07:18. > :07:20.catch-up news bulletin. We felt it was the peak point

:07:21. > :07:23.for people who are interested in catching up on the Oscars story

:07:24. > :07:27.could catch up on it and we just did To be honest, we did it at the same

:07:28. > :07:32.length we do for any lead story - the video report and a live

:07:33. > :07:35.with a correspondent and trailled I don't think it was out of kilter,

:07:36. > :07:39.we actually just wanted to allow people to catch up on the news

:07:40. > :07:42.at that point and then we brought some other stories before

:07:43. > :07:45.we came to it at 9.30am. Please, let us know your thoughts

:07:46. > :07:51.on the role of entertainment stories, or on any aspect of BBC

:07:52. > :07:53.News. Details of how to contact us

:07:54. > :07:56.at the end of the programme. Before that, two stories

:07:57. > :07:59.in the early part of the week dealt with migrants in different parts

:08:00. > :08:02.of Europe and both attracted Monday's News at Ten reported

:08:03. > :08:07.on a confrontation between police and migrants near the border

:08:08. > :08:09.between Greece and Macedonia and, before that, clashes as demolition

:08:10. > :08:12.teams moved into the camp in Calais What was meant to be a gentle

:08:13. > :08:22.eviction through encouragement and information became a blunt

:08:23. > :08:24.exchange of tear gas and rocks By dusk, the battle

:08:25. > :08:32.was underway again. A second fire in the place someone

:08:33. > :08:36.yesterday called home. The water cannon brought

:08:37. > :08:38.in not for the fire, but for the arsonists,

:08:39. > :08:41.and then tear gas for anyone This is the view from

:08:42. > :08:48.the Macedonian side. A border guard fires tear gas

:08:49. > :08:53.directly at the migrants. On the other side of the fence,

:08:54. > :08:57.the man in the front of the picture in the blue jacket is

:08:58. > :09:02.hit by that canister. There is panic as the toxic

:09:03. > :09:07.gas start spreading. A boy staggers from the crush

:09:08. > :09:09.retching, others collapse Today, on a European border,

:09:10. > :09:18.children were tear-gassed. Merlin Graham-Paulton

:09:19. > :09:19.from Gloucester wrote Brenda Taylor was more concerned

:09:20. > :09:59.about the coverage of Calais, And we received this telephone

:10:00. > :10:02.message on a similar theme. I was watching the news on 29th

:10:03. > :10:05.February to see the coverage of the clearance of

:10:06. > :10:09.the camps in France. It is always seems like

:10:10. > :10:14.it is on the one side. They were criticising the police

:10:15. > :10:22.and how they were acting, It just seemed to be

:10:23. > :10:26.on to the police all the time, but they did not go

:10:27. > :10:28.on about the other side, the way they were acting, throwing

:10:29. > :10:31.stones at the police and everything. If you are going to report the news,

:10:32. > :10:34.don't report it with bias, Well, we put those points to BBC

:10:35. > :11:02.News and they told us: Finally, the strange

:11:03. > :11:05.tale of the stag party, the Ryanair flight,

:11:06. > :11:08.and the prankster. Last Friday, a flight between Luton

:11:09. > :11:11.and Bratislava was diverted after a group of 12 men became

:11:12. > :11:14.drunk, rowdy and violent, with passengers saying one

:11:15. > :11:17.of them exposed himself. BBC News reported the story

:11:18. > :11:20.and invited anyone on the plane Darius Davis did so and after

:11:21. > :11:26.a telephone conversation with a journalist was invited

:11:27. > :11:30.onto The Victoria Derbyshire Show About ten minutes into the flight,

:11:31. > :11:41.when we were in the air, one of the stag members stole

:11:42. > :11:45.the trousers, so one of them was exposed and he stood up

:11:46. > :11:48.and he was being boisterous. Darius Davis later revealed

:11:49. > :11:54.that he had not actually been on the plane and had made

:11:55. > :11:59.up his entire testimony as a hoax. In a blog, Davis, who is a comedian,

:12:00. > :12:03.claimed that at no point did the BBC demand to see proof

:12:04. > :12:06.that he was on board the flight, expressing his surprise that,

:12:07. > :12:08."lazy journalism allowed me While a Twitter user

:12:09. > :12:27.called Ben posted this. For its part, the BBC had this

:12:28. > :12:37.to say: Many thanks to all of

:12:38. > :12:39.those who contributed If you would like to share your
