:00:08. > :00:16.Hello and welcome to Newswatch with me, Samira Ahmed.
:00:17. > :00:25.This week... Wild celebrations in Leicester on Monday night as they
:00:26. > :00:32.win the premiership with the rest of the country very happy as well. Were
:00:33. > :00:44.the BBC correct to reflect this with extensive coverage?
:00:45. > :00:49.First, the BBC pulled out all the stops as normal for its coverage of
:00:50. > :00:57.Thursday night's elections across the UK. BBC One ran its election
:00:58. > :01:02.2016 programme throughout the night and BBC News reported extensively on
:01:03. > :01:05.Friday the results of votes for the Parliament of Scotland and the
:01:06. > :01:09.assemblies of Wales and Northern Ireland. Nigel greeted this
:01:10. > :01:24.enthusiastically on Friday night. The graphics! Jeremy Vine unveiled
:01:25. > :01:29.the computerised box of tricks as usual. Let's have a look at the map
:01:30. > :01:39.again. Take it all in. We will show you the results in the key wards.
:01:40. > :01:45.800 of them. This shows movement since last year, 2015. Labour had a
:01:46. > :01:58.poor results... Reaction was divided on Twitter. -- result.
:01:59. > :02:09.On Friday morning, the emphasis was put on one results. -- one set of
:02:10. > :02:24.results. Election results are still coming in
:02:25. > :02:29.over the weekend so if you have some reaction to the reports you see we
:02:30. > :02:34.may feature it next week. Earlier this week, Monday's late news
:02:35. > :02:41.bulletin on BBC One lead with news on what some people in the English
:02:42. > :02:47.Midlands greeted with joy. By the kicked off 24 hours of coverage
:02:48. > :02:50.which infuriated many watchers. Leicester City defied the odds to
:02:51. > :02:58.win the Premier League. APPLAUSE. Delirious fans celebrate
:02:59. > :03:03.as the club written off at the start of the season wins the title for the
:03:04. > :03:08.first time in its history. It is a dream. Adrian come through! The
:03:09. > :03:17.dream went on throughout Tuesday on television. -- A dream come true.
:03:18. > :03:19.There were features on the impact on bookmakers in Leicester City
:03:20. > :03:26.upsetting the odds, the financial benefits for the club, and
:03:27. > :03:32.interviews with Claudio Ranieri. He still passes by every two or three
:03:33. > :03:37.years. Is old friends have a get together and we go to get something
:03:38. > :03:41.to eat. It was still the lead story at ten o'clock that night. Dan Roan
:03:42. > :03:52.is in Leicester tonight with the latest. 24 hours... By then, had the
:03:53. > :04:03.BBC milked the story dry? Was it right to make the most of a rare
:04:04. > :04:07.good news story? I am joined by an editor and others who have contacted
:04:08. > :04:12.us after watching the coverage. What was your reason for complaining? I
:04:13. > :04:18.was watching the one o'clock news and the first item was the Leicester
:04:19. > :04:25.City victory. It is tremendous for them! But I felt that ten minutes of
:04:26. > :04:31.that at the start of the news was a bit much. And then as a sideline the
:04:32. > :04:36.disaster in Syria was mentioned. More and more recently with
:04:37. > :04:43.celebrity steps and one thing or the other, apart from being on the news,
:04:44. > :04:49.it is nearly a documentary. -- deaths. Just a mention on the news
:04:50. > :04:55.is fine and save the documentary for another time. It is
:04:56. > :05:00.disproportionate, isn't it? It wasn't a surprise. We had known for
:05:01. > :05:05.days they were going to win. It was a surprise at the start of the
:05:06. > :05:09.season. 5000-1. It was an extraordinary story, a great story,
:05:10. > :05:16.so many elements in it and so much to go into, such a surprise, local
:05:17. > :05:21.angles as well, global angles, financial angles, cultural
:05:22. > :05:24.angles... It was absolutely a story that transcended football and
:05:25. > :05:27.sport. For the people I spoke to it is a story that captured
:05:28. > :05:35.imaginations. There was loads to get into. But it was almost a
:05:36. > :05:41.documentary. Ten minutes! Still the lead 24 hours later? There was a lot
:05:42. > :05:47.going on that day. There was a lot to get into and analyse. From what
:05:48. > :05:51.we can judge the audiences were enjoying it. The website figures
:05:52. > :05:57.were strong that they. And Syria is an important ongoing story we have
:05:58. > :06:06.covered consistently in-depth. -- that day. A unique moment in news,
:06:07. > :06:17.Mark. Eight rare feel good story. It was great. -- a rare. But 24 hours!
:06:18. > :06:21.It lost its significance. If it was a newspaper I would wrap my chips in
:06:22. > :06:30.it. It was presenters in front of crowds of people and you couldn't
:06:31. > :06:38.hear them. It really ran out of news. I think it is about you
:06:39. > :06:43.needing to understand what is significant for viewers. Syria,
:06:44. > :06:48.Brexit, the presidential elections, a whole range of things. They became
:06:49. > :06:53.insignificant compared to this story. 24 hours later... I think
:06:54. > :06:59.there were developments that they. Claudio Ranieri, the manager, spoke
:07:00. > :07:04.for the first time. The city in celebration. The players back in
:07:05. > :07:08.celebration. I think it is right. But isn't it indulgent? I think it
:07:09. > :07:13.was right that we analysed the story. It was an extraordinary
:07:14. > :07:20.event. There wasn't much to analyse. Everyone is saying is
:07:21. > :07:25.saying isn't it amazing! Even the Prime Minister tweeted, he got the
:07:26. > :07:37.club right, thank God, that it just became repetitious. They had a great
:07:38. > :07:48.scoop on the IS documents on Sky... It is waiting chasing. -- rating
:07:49. > :08:01.chasing. It was about how did they achieve this. Back to Joan. As well
:08:02. > :08:06.as that, for you this was another story about football and the English
:08:07. > :08:11.Premier League at that. I am not a football fan but I love the sport
:08:12. > :08:21.and I watch snooker wall-to-wall. But ten minutes in a half-hour
:08:22. > :08:24.bulletin! And sending a reporter to speak to the manager's friends from
:08:25. > :08:33.his childhood? News, I don't think so. Specifically, this coverage from
:08:34. > :08:39.Rome. That was a key part of the story. An manager who has previously
:08:40. > :08:46.been unsuccessful in other clubs... -- a. Is that normal? We always send
:08:47. > :08:52.reporters to see friends of important figures. It covers the
:08:53. > :08:56.context of this story. And I genuinely think this is a story that
:08:57. > :08:59.people will remember for years to come and we will be talking about it
:09:00. > :09:05.for years to come. You can't say that about many stories. It was
:09:06. > :09:17.entertainment. It wasn't news. It was ratings chasing. A final word.
:09:18. > :09:21.It went on and on, including with celebrities, if they die, mention
:09:22. > :09:26.it, but a mini documentary in a half-hour bulletin is wrong.
:09:27. > :09:32.Schedule a mini documentary for another time. Is an issue about how
:09:33. > :09:46.much goes on a bulletin as to a post to what is on the website. -- There
:09:47. > :09:49.is an. -- as opposed. What is in a name? You may have read that the
:09:50. > :10:00.government of the Czech Republic is renaming the country to Czechia. It
:10:01. > :10:03.raises the question of how the BBC should name other countries. For
:10:04. > :10:08.instance, a new military regime in 1989 decided are much should
:10:09. > :10:16.henceforth be known as Myanmar and not many people agreed. -- Burma.
:10:17. > :10:20.And this person noted that sometimes the BBC uses anglicised versions of
:10:21. > :10:34.place names and sometimes it doesn't. The Italians call their
:10:35. > :10:41.country Italia, they call Roma Rome. We call them differently. That has
:10:42. > :10:46.to be consistency. Either we adopt their names for all cities, towns
:10:47. > :10:50.and countries, or we continue to use the familiar English names that we
:10:51. > :10:57.all move and understand. The current pick and mix system is confusing,
:10:58. > :11:07.illogical, and just plain wrong. I suppose it means, looking forward,
:11:08. > :11:14.we will have news reports from Mosca, Athena, and so on instead of
:11:15. > :11:20.the more familiar Moscow and Athens. Please, please, can we go
:11:21. > :11:25.back to the familiar English names? Thank you for all your comments this
:11:26. > :11:36.week. You too, could put your point across on a future edition of
