:00:00. > :00:00.killed outside of her constituency office yesterday. We will have all

:00:00. > :00:00.of the latest News at 10pm with Fiona Bruce but first it is time for

:00:00. > :00:16.news watch. Hello and welcome to news watch,

:00:17. > :00:20.coming up, should the BBC have been braver during the referendum

:00:21. > :00:26.campaign in stating which claims by both sides are true and which are

:00:27. > :00:31.false? And of all allegations against Cliff Richard of sexual

:00:32. > :00:39.abuse being dropped, should the BBC apologise how it covered the raid on

:00:40. > :00:43.his house two years ago. Campaigning for EU referendum was suspended on

:00:44. > :00:50.Thursday by news which shocked Westminster and those beyond. Good

:00:51. > :00:55.evening and welcome to BBC News, the Labour MP Jo Cox has died after

:00:56. > :00:58.being stabbed and shot in a street in her constituency in west

:00:59. > :01:03.Yorkshire. She was 41 and leaves a husband and two young children. Bill

:01:04. > :01:18.Parker contacted us with this message.

:01:19. > :01:24.There had been more shocking news last weekend when 49 people were

:01:25. > :01:27.killed by a gunman in a gay nightclub in the American city of

:01:28. > :01:33.Orlando in Florida. As is often the case with such mass murders, the BBC

:01:34. > :01:37.reporting raised a number of issues. Mr MacCormack objected to a list of

:01:38. > :01:56.the worst mass shootings in the US of the last 25 years.

:01:57. > :02:13.Richard Tamblyn had a different concern:

:02:14. > :02:19.in August 20 14th South Yorkshire Police gave the BBC details of a

:02:20. > :02:23.raid they were conducting on the home of Sir Cliff Richard because of

:02:24. > :02:28.allegations they had received about historical sex abuse. BBC news crews

:02:29. > :02:33.including one in a helicopter, filmed it and broadcasted live,

:02:34. > :02:41.leading to numerous complaints of trial by news. The CPS said that Sir

:02:42. > :02:43.Cliff Richard would face no more actions, facing further criticism,

:02:44. > :03:10.Richard Wall asked: last year an independent

:03:11. > :03:14.investigation concluded that South Yorkshire Police should not have

:03:15. > :03:24.told the BBC about the search, and the force said on Thursday:

:03:25. > :03:43.meanwhile the BBC released this statement:

:03:44. > :03:47.we have been receiving plenty of correspondence about coverage of

:03:48. > :03:52.Euro 2016 football championships but in reaction to the violence on

:03:53. > :03:59.French streets. Here is the reporter. It is about midnight now

:04:00. > :04:04.and the England fans have been followed around by the French riot

:04:05. > :04:08.police, the area is thick with tear gas, you can smell it can taste it,

:04:09. > :04:12.but they are coming out from all different angles, you have got a

:04:13. > :04:16.line of riot police here and another one here and they are trying to keep

:04:17. > :04:19.the fans on the move, it is not a good night for English supporters,

:04:20. > :04:30.it doesn't put them in a good light at. White slowly e-mailed us on

:04:31. > :04:44.Thursday with these comments: -- Chloe e-mailed us on Thursday with

:04:45. > :04:47.these comments: it has been a long and sometimes tense referendum

:04:48. > :04:52.campaign that has presented BBC News with a number of challenges, the

:04:53. > :04:57.task has been to engage a public that was not always riveted by the

:04:58. > :05:00.detail, to bring a clarity from confusion and disinformation and to

:05:01. > :05:05.do it all in a balanced and impartial way, but in trying to

:05:06. > :05:10.achieve the latter has the BBC distorted the debate? There will be

:05:11. > :05:15.a hole in the public finances, chances from two different party

:05:16. > :05:20.saying taxes have to go up, spending will be cut. That is the reality. We

:05:21. > :05:24.have been told that a one-way ticket out of the EU would be economic

:05:25. > :05:30.slowdown, staying in would-be migrants in the millions. Today's

:05:31. > :05:37.scary morning, vote for the EU and you will pay for it at holiday time.

:05:38. > :05:44.It is something that each country could veto. Mare, I do not think

:05:45. > :05:53.that the EU, is going to keep Turkey out. At the moment, ?350 million a

:05:54. > :05:56.week go to Brussels and I think that we ought to decide ourselves how we

:05:57. > :06:02.spend that money and I would suggest that we spend it on the NHS. No

:06:03. > :06:09.sooner has an alleged fact been put out by one side than the other side

:06:10. > :06:13.has poured scorn on it. In such circumstances, is it the BBC's

:06:14. > :06:16.responsibility to have both sides of the story with equal prominence or

:06:17. > :06:21.to make a judgment about what the truth of the matter is and ignore

:06:22. > :06:49.what it deems to be. David thinks that we have got it wrong.

:06:50. > :06:54.The league side have pointed out that the predictions of

:06:55. > :07:01.international institutions do not always turn out to be correct. The

:07:02. > :07:06.particular point I wanted to make was about the item where 13 Nobel

:07:07. > :07:11.Prize winners have signed a letter saying that it would be better to

:07:12. > :07:15.stay in the EU. And the same amount of coverage was given to that as to

:07:16. > :07:22.the one Nobel Prize winner who said that was not the case. I think that

:07:23. > :07:28.the numbers and the proportionality, 13-1, should be made much clearer.

:07:29. > :07:31.My other point is also linked to proportionality, which is to do with

:07:32. > :07:38.the amounts of money being bandied around. We know that the 350 million

:07:39. > :07:46.per week number is not true, which I would like followed up on, but apart

:07:47. > :07:51.from that, that amount of money compared to the British GDP is

:07:52. > :07:56.really a small percentage and I think that is never put across. I

:07:57. > :08:01.think it would be ready helpful for the BBC to be pointing out what is

:08:02. > :08:07.an expert prediction, what people on the ground are saying and what is an

:08:08. > :08:12.emotional outburst. Again the league side has defended its use of the

:08:13. > :08:15.?350 million a week figure, and has challenged some of the facts and

:08:16. > :08:20.figures of the remains side, clearly the truth can be hard to get to and

:08:21. > :08:22.the BBC has tried to do so through the reality check online which has

:08:23. > :08:38.also featured on broadcast checks. But should this brave and robust

:08:39. > :08:48.approach of unpicking facts from Battersea be used more widely on BBC

:08:49. > :08:52.television? -- from Battersea. I think the reality check is very

:08:53. > :08:58.helpful, because it does provide a correcting element to both sides of

:08:59. > :09:03.the argument. The problem is that the BBC needs to be willing to

:09:04. > :09:07.apply, a degree of editing to the information that it is processing. I

:09:08. > :09:13.know this is difficult because you have got editorial deadlines to

:09:14. > :09:19.meet. There are times when, you will be confronted with facts, which may

:09:20. > :09:27.be you would want to question, and because nobody else can do it, it is

:09:28. > :09:33.the BBC's job. The classic one is the weekly spend 350 million, which

:09:34. > :09:40.has been open to dispute. Every time the figure is quoted, it is an

:09:41. > :09:48.opportunity for the people quoting to repeat the misleading figure.

:09:49. > :09:52.They will argue that it is not misleading, and therefore, they are

:09:53. > :09:57.entitled to say it. But I would prefer it if they had had that

:09:58. > :10:02.argument with you at the BBC first before it went out onto the

:10:03. > :10:06.airwaves. We hoped to discuss some of these points with the

:10:07. > :10:07.representatives of BBC news but that proved impossible, instead they gave

:10:08. > :10:49.this statement. Finally, for those who haven't

:10:50. > :10:53.noticed, the DJ Hayden music producer Calvin Harris is no longer

:10:54. > :10:59.following his ex-girlfriend on Twitter after images of her kissing

:11:00. > :11:03.somebody else online. Why do I mention this? Because it featured on

:11:04. > :11:20.the BBC News website. This reaction from Tom Harris.

:11:21. > :11:26.Thanks for all of your comments, we're off and next week in the

:11:27. > :11:31.aftermath of the referendum vote but we will be back in two weeks' time.

:11:32. > :11:42.In the meantime, please send us your thoughts.

:11:43. > :11:47.Do have a look at our website. That is all from us, B will be back to

:11:48. > :12:02.hear your thoughts in a fortnight. Hello, the weather is turning a bit

:12:03. > :12:05.quieter for all of us as we head into the weekend and that is good

:12:06. > :12:10.news after a dramatic week of weather, that has been captured by

:12:11. > :12:13.how weather watchers. Here is a thunderstorm earlier on in Brackley,

:12:14. > :12:14.Northamptonshire, you
