:00:00. > :00:17.Welcome to Newswatch. Wimbledon fans have been glued to television

:00:18. > :00:23.screens this past fortnight but should tennis take priority over the

:00:24. > :00:31.news? And would a male politician have been asked if he had shed a

:00:32. > :00:35.tear on election night? We are coming to the end of the Wimbledon

:00:36. > :00:39.fortnight, the annual treat the tennis fans, but the source of

:00:40. > :00:44.frustration for others, never mind the many hours of live action on BBC

:00:45. > :00:47.One and BBC Two, the tournament has featured strongly over the past two

:00:48. > :00:51.weeks and breakfast, the news channel and news bulletins. There

:00:52. > :00:55.have been features on the famously long queue for spectators to get

:00:56. > :00:59.into Wimbledon, the condition of Andy Murray's dodgy hip and

:01:00. > :01:04.discussion of the baby his wife has on the way. A number of injuries

:01:05. > :01:08.sustained by other players in matches, a state of the grass on

:01:09. > :01:13.court and of course the progress of our great British singles hopes, all

:01:14. > :01:28.lapped up by the aficionados but not by sceptics like Josh.

:01:29. > :01:34.On Tuesday not it wasn't a question of tennis featuring in the news, as

:01:35. > :01:38.instead of the news, specifically some local news bulletins, as it

:01:39. > :01:43.came up to six o'clock the British number one woman Johanna Konta was

:01:44. > :01:46.battling it out on centre court in her quarterfinal and it was decided

:01:47. > :01:52.to keep showing that match on BBC One instead of the scheduled use at

:01:53. > :01:56.six, and on BBC Two they had abandoned their planned Wimbledon

:01:57. > :02:00.coverage for unscheduled repeats, as rain meant no other matches were

:02:01. > :02:18.being played. Confused? John Wilson did not understand the logic.

:02:19. > :02:25.Another viewer Pat Brown was also annoyed by this and recorded this

:02:26. > :02:31.video to explain why. Hello. We have been subscribers of the radio Times

:02:32. > :02:36.for many years but when it comes to Wimbledon the scheduling might as

:02:37. > :02:42.well go out of the window. Prime example of this was on Tuesday, when

:02:43. > :02:51.at six o'clock the news was turned over onto BBC Two, can't Wimbledon

:02:52. > :02:56.fans click the channel? Perhaps not. And no London news at all that

:02:57. > :03:03.night. Why was that? Not very good, BBC. The London news was in fact

:03:04. > :03:07.shown that evening later than scheduled but in other parts of the

:03:08. > :03:09.UK such as Scotland and Northern Ireland the early evening regional

:03:10. > :03:13.bulletin was dropped altogether and we hope to discuss the reasoning

:03:14. > :03:15.behind this with someone from BBC television but no one was available.

:03:16. > :03:53.Instead they gave us this statement. It has been a month since the fire

:03:54. > :03:59.at Grenfell Tower in London in which at least 80 people died and on

:04:00. > :04:02.Wednesday morning our reporter reported on the impact the disaster

:04:03. > :04:07.has had on the local community especially children. All the

:04:08. > :04:09.children who have witnessed unimaginable horror, we asked for a

:04:10. > :04:16.show of hands of those who knew someone who had died. This is just

:04:17. > :04:22.the beginning of the healing process. But we know that the

:04:23. > :04:26.healing is going to take years, a very long time. Having watched that,

:04:27. > :04:59.Jan had this to say. Justin contacted us with more

:05:00. > :05:27.general thoughts on coverage of the Grenfell Tower, one month on.

:05:28. > :05:40.And another report on the aftermath of the tragedy came on the news at

:05:41. > :05:45.ten, it began like this. A black nail, hammered into London's

:05:46. > :05:53.conscience. Grenfell Tower demands your attention. In his shadow the

:05:54. > :06:02.faces of the missing are everywhere -- in its shadow. On trees and walls

:06:03. > :06:03.and bus shelters, unblinking, it is hard to hold their accuser treat

:06:04. > :06:33.gays. -- accuser Adrienne made the same point on

:06:34. > :06:39.camera. -- Adrian. Come on, BBC, this is a serious news item, why did

:06:40. > :06:46.we have to have dramatic build-up music, more akin to a drama like

:06:47. > :06:53.Silent witness or a Hollywood movie? This is the BBC and not Fox news,

:06:54. > :07:02.this was unnecessary, trivialising a serious news item. On Wednesday MPs

:07:03. > :07:07.debated the abuse and intimidation of parliamentary candidates after a

:07:08. > :07:10.cross-party report said the Sergeant and racism and bigotry was on the

:07:11. > :07:14.rise and politicians like Diane Abbott and Stella Creasy had

:07:15. > :07:17.described the repeated online abuse they have been subjected to an

:07:18. > :07:27.Theresa May has now ordered an inquiry into the subject. William

:07:28. > :07:31.McNulty gave us his thoughts after considering the interviews with

:07:32. > :07:36.Theresa May and Andrea Leadsom. If you look at the way the Prime

:07:37. > :07:44.Minister is addressed or Jeremy Corbyn is addressed, certainly by

:07:45. > :07:47.members of Newsnight and the media in general think the aggressive

:07:48. > :07:51.tones that are used against politicians... And this

:07:52. > :07:57.unfortunately translates to members of the public. And I think the

:07:58. > :08:02.media, so leave the BBC, and they are not alone in it, they have

:08:03. > :08:10.contributed to the levels of abuse that politicians have to put up with

:08:11. > :08:16.today. On Wednesday's daily politics the Labour MP Jack drew me came to

:08:17. > :08:21.discuss the scale of personal abuse directed at politicians. It has been

:08:22. > :08:27.getting worse for some years, and I personally don't get that much, if

:08:28. > :08:29.you will excuse the language, but it comes overwhelmingly from the right,

:08:30. > :08:33.but that doesn't matter where it comes from, it is not acceptable and

:08:34. > :08:39.anyone who practices that is completely wrong. When we're talking

:08:40. > :08:46.about abuse it would be best if we did not use abusive language and

:08:47. > :08:53.daytime -- and daytime terrorism. I feel -- on daytime television. I

:08:54. > :08:57.feel very strongly about it. The Daily Politics team were not able to

:08:58. > :09:03.lead out the term as we have done and that led to this response. I

:09:04. > :09:10.don't want to sit and hear people coming out with disgusting language

:09:11. > :09:12.like that, I'm amazed you allow people like that to come on the

:09:13. > :09:19.television and speak like that. When there are little children around.

:09:20. > :09:23.Another political interview caused more controversy this week, one

:09:24. > :09:26.conducted on Thursday by Emma Barnett for radio five, she asked

:09:27. > :09:32.the Prime Minister how she reacted on election night when she saw the

:09:33. > :09:41.exit poll. Did you have a cry, how did you feel? I felt devastated,

:09:42. > :09:49.really. Enough to shed a tear? Yes, a little tear. At that moment? At

:09:50. > :09:52.that moment, yes. That admission was headlined on television news

:09:53. > :09:55.bulletins throughout the day and it is worth bearing in mind that

:09:56. > :09:59.interviews like this are arranged between the Prime Minister's office

:10:00. > :10:02.and a programme and maybe the line of questioning is anticipated, but

:10:03. > :10:05.some viewers felt the prominence given to it and the line of

:10:06. > :10:41.questioning played into gender stereotypes.

:10:42. > :10:47.Finally back to tennis, and the defeats of Britain's's great hopes

:10:48. > :10:56.Andy Murray and Johanna Konta. These are the headlines from the news at

:10:57. > :11:00.six on Wednesday and Thursday. And Andy Murray crashes out of the

:11:01. > :11:06.quarterfinals at Wimbledon and finally admits he was injured. And

:11:07. > :11:11.the end of a dream for Britain's Johanna Konta as she crashes out the

:11:12. > :11:17.Wimbledon semifinals. Sarah wondered, can we get newsreaders to

:11:18. > :11:20.stop using the sensationalised term of crashing out in reference to

:11:21. > :11:22.tennis players, getting to the quarterfinals with an injured hip

:11:23. > :11:35.and then losing is hardly Andy Murray crashing out, she said.

:11:36. > :11:42.Thank you for your comments this week. If you want to share your

:11:43. > :11:47.opinions on BBC news and current affairs and even appear on the

:11:48. > :11:53.programme, you can call us or e-mail Newswatch. You can find us on

:11:54. > :12:02.Twitter and have a look at our website. That is all from us. We

:12:03. > :12:03.will be back to hear your thoughts about BBC news coverage again next

:12:04. > :12:09.week. Goodbye.
