:00:05. > :00:15.Good evening. After 18 years,

:00:15. > :00:18.His family is glad their long battle Had the police

:00:18. > :00:21...I would have spent the last 18 years grieving for my son...

:00:21. > :00:26...rather than fighting to get his killers to court.

:00:26. > :00:27.Also tonight:

:00:27. > :00:30.Stormy weather creates difficulties across Britain.

:00:30. > :00:32.In Wales, roads have been closed...

:00:32. > :00:35...and people have had to leave their homes.

:00:35. > :00:37.There have been warnings of further rain.

:00:37. > :00:41.Who will be the next Plaid Cymru leader?

:00:41. > :00:44.Four candidates are likely to stand as the nomination process begins.

:00:44. > :00:46.The race for the White House.

:00:46. > :00:48.Voters in Iowa will declare tonight...

:00:48. > :01:05...who they think should challenge President Obama.

:01:05. > :01:08.Two men, Gary Dobson and David Norris, have been found guilty...

:01:08. > :01:14...of the murder of Stephen Lawrence, which took place 18 years ago.

:01:14. > :01:17.The jury at the Old Bailey decided the two men had played a part...

:01:17. > :01:21...in the incident in 1993 when theblack youngster was stabbed to death.

:01:21. > :01:25.Since then, his parents, led by his mother Doreen...

:01:25. > :01:29...have been campaigning for justice.

:01:29. > :01:31.Today, she said the original police investigation into the murder...

:01:31. > :01:33...had been a failure.

:01:33. > :01:46.This report by Telor Iwan contains flash photography.

:01:47. > :01:47.The

:01:47. > :01:47.The parents

:01:47. > :01:52.The parents of

:01:52. > :02:01.The parents of Stephen Lawrence leaving the Old Bailey after the

:02:01. > :02:11.verdict was read out. The case has led to criticism from

:02:11. > :02:16.the public. How can I celebrate when my son lays buried. Together

:02:16. > :02:22.with the lack of justice has meant I have not been able to rest all

:02:22. > :02:28.this time. I am therefore full of joy and relief that today, finally

:02:28. > :02:32.two of my son's killers will be convicted of his murder.

:02:32. > :02:42.It was clear from the start, that there was a racial motive to the

:02:42. > :02:47.killing. Dobson lied to an officer that he

:02:47. > :03:08.had not left his home on the night in question. Police had evidence to

:03:08. > :03:20.prove that wasn't the case. They also hid a camera and caught the

:03:20. > :03:31.defendants talking about racial hate crime. During a previous case

:03:31. > :03:35.the five defendants had to be protected by the police. There have

:03:35. > :03:45.been changes because of this case, to the way police handle hate

:03:45. > :03:54.crimes. There are still injustice and

:03:54. > :04:00.violence. We have a long way to go. New forensic techniques have been

:04:00. > :04:11.able to bring these men to court. These techniques were not available

:04:11. > :04:19.at the time of the murder. The murderers of Stephen Lawrence were

:04:19. > :04:40.still free. The Metropolitan Police reopened the case in 2006.

:04:40. > :04:53.Telor Iwan joins us now from outside It is fair to say this case has led

:04:53. > :05:01.to wide changes? The case has led to some changes. An apology was

:05:01. > :05:10.given for the handling of the case at the start.

:05:10. > :05:28.We have seen changes to the way police react to racially motivated

:05:28. > :05:44.crime. We have seen the same person being twice after the first case

:05:44. > :05:57.failed. MacPherson said five people were

:05:57. > :06:08.suspected early on. It took changes in forensic techniques to be able

:06:09. > :06:25.to bring these to justice. The father believes a few others need

:06:25. > :06:31.to be brought to justice. Witnesses Following a heavy storm overnight

:06:31. > :06:35...there has been a warning of Scotland experienced

:06:35. > :06:37...after trees fell on their vehicles.

:06:37. > :06:39.12 people had to be evacuated from their homes in Dolgellau...

:06:39. > :06:47...after electric cables ignited.

:06:47. > :06:48.The

:06:48. > :06:51.The overnight

:06:51. > :06:55.The overnight storms

:06:55. > :07:01.The overnight storms had left its mark. In North Wales the River

:07:01. > :07:15.Conwy had burst its banks. There was a warning for the river tee.

:07:15. > :07:22.The River Taff overflowed in Pontcanna and Bute Park. Trains

:07:22. > :07:35.were stopped between Treherbert and Pontypridd because of the deluge.

:07:35. > :07:41.Trees had come down in many parts. There was a scare for people when

:07:41. > :07:52.electrical cables caught on fire. There were sparks everywhere at

:07:52. > :08:03.around 5.30am. There was the smell of burning. This trampoline fell on

:08:03. > :08:11.a car in Bala and many were damaged across the country.

:08:11. > :08:17.One man had died in England after a tree fell on his car. Another man

:08:17. > :08:24.was seriously injured in Surrey after a tree fell on his vehicle.

:08:24. > :08:30.Winds of more than 100 miles per hour were recorded, especially in

:08:30. > :08:49.Scotland. There has been a warning of more stormy weather over the

:08:49. > :08:56.Sara Gibson joins us now The winds have died down now,

:08:56. > :09:05.compared to what we had overnight. People were out early this morning

:09:05. > :09:15.trying to clear branches and trees from the road. Around 4,000 homes

:09:15. > :09:28.in West Wales were left without power after cables came down. The

:09:28. > :09:33.main worry tonight is flooding. There are about ten rivers at the

:09:33. > :09:38.first level. That's much better than it was this morning. There

:09:39. > :09:42.were 29 at this level. The river tee is still at the highest --

:09:43. > :09:50.River Tee is still at the highest level. Fortunately the weather has

:09:50. > :09:54.calmed down and we can see the weather just dropping a little.

:09:54. > :09:59.main worry for tomorrow, it could be a same situation because more

:09:59. > :10:02.rain is on the way. Yes. There will be a lot more rain coming in

:10:02. > :10:15.tomorrow afternoon. It will be coming into North Wales and then

:10:15. > :10:29.into mid-Wales, then it will be spreading to the south.

:10:29. > :10:42.The land is saturated with water, so the levels may rise quickly now.

:10:42. > :10:47.Today was an important milestone in The nomination period

:10:47. > :10:49...have already suggested they will stand.

:10:49. > :10:53.We can now go over to Cardiff Bay to our Political Editor, Betsan Powys.

:10:53. > :10:58.It's a busy start to 2012 for Plaid Cymru.

:10:58. > :11:02.That's partly due to what happened to the party last year.

:11:02. > :11:06.Following a disappointing result at the Assembly elections...

:11:06. > :11:13...the party is about to publish the result of an internal review...

:11:13. > :11:26...and hold an election for a new party leader.

:11:26. > :11:27.This

:11:27. > :11:27.This isn't

:11:27. > :11:32.This isn't a

:11:32. > :11:40.This isn't a familiar game for Plaid Cymru. There hasn't been a

:11:40. > :11:51.leadership contest for a decade. Ieuan Wyn Jones is about to hand

:11:51. > :11:58.over the reigns. So far there are four candidates. Elin Jones is the

:11:58. > :12:06.favourite. I want to make sure that everyone who has ambitions for

:12:06. > :12:19.Wales, playing a part in Plaid Cymru, no matter what their

:12:19. > :12:24.background. Simon Thomas is the member for Mid and West Wales.

:12:24. > :12:36.can work with different levels of the Government. We need to try and

:12:36. > :12:43.lead more and unite people with our vision. Leanne Wood represents

:12:43. > :12:51.South Wales central. She is the latest to join the contest.

:12:51. > :12:55.could not solve our economic problems or protect our communities

:12:55. > :13:05.without independents. That is what I believe Plaid Cymru needs to

:13:05. > :13:12.concentrate on. Lord Elis Thomas is the most e peernsed member in the

:13:12. > :13:20.contest. -- experienced member in the contest. Up until last May he

:13:20. > :13:28.was the Lywydd. The phones at Plaid Cymru's headquarters have been busy

:13:28. > :13:36.over the Christmas period. Staff are trying to attract new members.

:13:36. > :13:47.It is important that the new leader is someone who has a lot of ideas.

:13:47. > :13:53.We need someone with energy and ideas for the future. An internal

:13:53. > :14:02.review will be published shortly. There is plenty for the new leader

:14:03. > :14:09.to consider. A lot of hard work needs to be done to win the support

:14:09. > :14:29.of the party faithful. We shall find out who the new leader is on

:14:29. > :14:36.She is not a clear favourite. She is Elin Jones. Leanne Wood is the

:14:36. > :14:47.favourite of the left-wing of the party. Lord Elis Thomas is a

:14:47. > :14:52.favourite with more traditional members.

:14:52. > :14:59.This will be a proportional vote, so the second preference of first

:14:59. > :15:06.preference will play an important role. We heard about an internal

:15:06. > :15:12.review, with a new leader, will the party be hoping for a new period?

:15:12. > :15:21.That is the message. They held a football match today to discuss the

:15:21. > :15:25.idea of tactics and the way the party works together as a team.

:15:25. > :15:33.Voters will be looking at their party at the time of election. It

:15:33. > :15:45.is the leader that gets the message across. This is a time when Plaid

:15:45. > :15:50.Cymru will be discussing core values such as its message, what

:15:50. > :15:55.does the idea of independence mean for the people of Wales? What can

:15:55. > :15:58.Plaid Cymru do regarding the economy and so on? So, there are

:15:58. > :16:07.some important issues to be discussed over the next couple of

:16:07. > :16:14.An inquest into the deaths of ..as a result of a car accident

:16:14. > :16:16.Sasha Jarvis, who was 19-years-old ..and Sian Gwenllian Lloyd Davies

:16:16. > :16:18...died after the car they were travelling in...

:16:18. > :16:20...collided with a wall in Llanrug.

:16:20. > :16:25.The families of both women have paid tribute to them.

:16:25. > :16:28.Two wards at Wrexham Maelor Hospital remain closed...

:16:28. > :16:32...following a number of cases of the Norovirus stomach bug.

:16:32. > :16:35.According to the authorities, it isnot clear when they will be reopened.

:16:35. > :16:41.A ward at Mold Community Hospital is also closed because of the bug.

:16:41. > :16:44.Following the discovery of a woman's body...

:16:44. > :16:46...on the Queen's Sandringham estate...

:16:46. > :16:48...police say they are dealing with a case of murder.

:16:48. > :16:51.The remains were found in woodland on New Year's Day.

:16:51. > :16:54.Police are considering whether the case has a possible connection...

:16:54. > :16:58...to other cases in Britain.

:16:58. > :17:02.Not for the first time, gunlicensing has become a talking point.

:17:02. > :17:06.This follows the deaths of four people at a house in Durham.

:17:06. > :17:09.It's believed that Michael Atherton, a 42-year-old taxi driver...

:17:09. > :17:14...killed his partner and two other women before he killed himself.

:17:15. > :17:27.He owned six guns and he was already known by the police.

:17:27. > :17:28.Police

:17:28. > :17:28.Police are

:17:29. > :17:35.Police are still

:17:35. > :17:40.Police are still investigating the house at Horden near Peterlee.

:17:40. > :17:48.Michael Atherton shot three women dead. One of those was Tanya

:17:48. > :17:56.Turnbull. Her mother was shot and as well as her Aunty, who was

:17:56. > :18:03.Michael Atherton's partner. Michael Atherton had legal licences for the

:18:03. > :18:15.guns. Questions have been raised once

:18:15. > :18:27.more about the gun licence laws. The rules in this country are some

:18:27. > :18:38.of the strictest rules that we have in the world. The greatest problem

:18:38. > :18:44.we have are the illegal weapons people have. There has been other

:18:44. > :18:58.cases. One of the most recent ones happened in Cumbria when 12 people

:18:58. > :19:08.were shot. I took part in the Dunblane enquiry. I don't see how

:19:08. > :19:19.things can be changed. Is the medical profession giving

:19:19. > :19:25.enough evidence to the police The Health Secretary for England,

:19:25. > :19:28...regarding silicone implants of inferior quality.

:19:28. > :19:30.These were given to around 40,000 women.

:19:30. > :19:32.The French government has banned them...

:19:32. > :19:34...stating that they are more likely to rupture compared to others.

:19:34. > :19:37.Two minor injury units in Pembrokeshire...

:19:37. > :19:39...will close temporarily from today.

:19:39. > :19:43.Health officials say the units atTenby and Pembroke Dock must close...

:19:43. > :19:46...so that nurses can be transferred...

:19:46. > :19:51...to the A&E unit at Withybush Hospital in Haverfordwest.

:19:51. > :20:01.But there are concern locally that these units will not be reopened.

:20:01. > :20:04.We

:20:04. > :20:04.We is

:20:04. > :20:07.We is --

:20:08. > :20:11.We is -- have not seen the effect this will have on the ambulance

:20:11. > :20:16.service. We have not seen an assessment of the effect it will

:20:16. > :20:27.have on Withybush Hospital. Will that hospital be able to cope

:20:27. > :20:31.In America, the 2012 US Presidential This year, six Republican candidates

:20:31. > :20:34.One of the favourites is Mitt Romney, the former Governor of Massachusetts.

:20:34. > :20:43.The first task is to secure the support of the electorate in Iowa.

:20:43. > :20:44.On

:20:44. > :20:45.On the

:20:45. > :20:56.On the ice

:20:56. > :21:13.On the ice of Iowa, the Presidential campaign begins. Who

:21:13. > :21:17.will take on Barack Obama for presidency of the White House? The

:21:17. > :21:27.heat of the battle has come across the Atlantic to Cardiff. I have

:21:27. > :21:36.been speaking to some Americans who have made their home here. Mitt

:21:36. > :21:45.Romney is more telly again nick than the others. To be looking at

:21:45. > :21:49.that level you can see that he is younger. He looks after himself.

:21:49. > :21:59.Quite superficial, but that is what people look at. Some people don't

:21:59. > :22:04.follow all the debate. He seems to be the most honest of

:22:04. > :22:15.the Republican candidates. He has been saying the same things

:22:15. > :22:24.for many years. I do have family connections. He represents lap lake

:22:24. > :22:36.Jackson. I have met him. That is where my family are from.

:22:36. > :22:41.I'm not sure if the politics of Ron Paul will match that of most

:22:41. > :22:50.Republicans. You get a lot of people who are right-wing all the

:22:50. > :23:01.way, but these candidates will have to broaden their appeal to get

:23:01. > :23:09.everyone else. How close will the race be? Will Barack Obama lose his

:23:09. > :23:16.place? He could do because a lot of the machinery with the Republicans

:23:16. > :23:26.has been showing some of the failings of President Obama. Those

:23:26. > :23:31.are the views of three people who Swansea City have won their first

:23:31. > :23:32...the Swans are now in 11th place in the table.

:23:32. > :23:40.Cardiff City and Wrexham also had a good start to the year.

:24:02. > :24:09.in the Premiership. At the start of a New Year it plans to make changes.

:24:09. > :24:16.Nathan Dyer took advantage of a mistake by Aston Villa to score.

:24:16. > :24:24.Swansea City had yielded an early advantage in the past. They made

:24:24. > :24:33.sure of their switch made by Wayne Routledge. Swansea City will now

:24:39. > :24:48.has been kind to Cardiff City. They had won the match before the end of

:24:48. > :24:53.the first half. The final score was 3-1.

:24:53. > :25:00.The Bluebirds have now gone up to within two points of the top of the

:25:00. > :25:15.championship. In the Blue Square premier, Wrexham have an increasing

:25:15. > :25:19.lead at the top. 18 years after being stabbed
