:00:07. > :00:14.There's been a shooting at a visitors' centre at

:00:15. > :00:16.the US Capitol, home to the Houses of Congress.

:00:17. > :00:19.The gunman has been caught - a policeman was wounded,

:00:20. > :00:23.The Pakistani Prime Minister has promised to avenge the Easter attack

:00:24. > :00:29.saying the militants would fail to divide the country's communities.

:00:30. > :00:35.released of the third suspect in the bombing of Brussels Airport.

:00:36. > :00:39.The only man so far charged over last week's attacks has been

:00:40. > :00:43.released because of a lack of evidence.

:00:44. > :00:46.We'll hear from BBC Arabic about the fight for Palmyra -

:00:47. > :00:53.the Syrian army says it has the city back in control.

:00:54. > :00:56.And in OS Sport we'll be finding out how the success of Leicester City

:00:57. > :00:59.football club is being received in Thailand -

:01:00. > :01:19.the home of the team's billionaire owners.

:01:20. > :01:26.Let's start with some breaking news from the last hour.

:01:27. > :01:34.A man has been taken into custody after shots were fired at the US

:01:35. > :01:37.Capitol. One policeman and a female bystander were wounded. It happened

:01:38. > :01:45.close to the visitor centre in Washington. The US Capitol is home

:01:46. > :01:50.to the Houses of Congress. They were placed into lockdown and visitors

:01:51. > :01:56.were told I lead speaker to find shelter. Staff were told to stay

:01:57. > :02:04.put. Barbara Platt Usher has been following developments. We have only

:02:05. > :02:07.been told a few minutes ago that the lockdown has been lifted, so people

:02:08. > :02:12.can leave their offices. This is an Easter break for Congress, so not

:02:13. > :02:17.many Congress people or staff members around but a lot of corrupt

:02:18. > :02:25.speakers this is high tourist season and I have just met Madeline Morris

:02:26. > :02:29.and her grandson, who were doing a of the Capitol building when the

:02:30. > :02:35.event took place. What were you doing and how did you hear about it?

:02:36. > :02:38.We were completing the tour and hearing suggestions were we could do

:02:39. > :02:45.next when people started running and they told us to follow them and go

:02:46. > :02:52.to a corner and said down and be quiet and not move. Did you hear

:02:53. > :03:02.gunshots? No, we just followed instructions. And how did you feel?

:03:03. > :03:11.Were you scared? Yeah. I was kind of staying behind Maflin because she

:03:12. > :03:20.was protecting me and I felt very safe behind her. I told him to sit

:03:21. > :03:24.behind me, I sat in front of him. This must have been a real shock for

:03:25. > :03:30.you. I'm sure you never thought you would experience this on a trip to

:03:31. > :03:36.Washington. We like to do at adventures and this was one of our

:03:37. > :03:39.adventure days, we had gone to the Supreme Court and were going to the

:03:40. > :03:45.US capital, but didn't know this would happen. Do you know how long

:03:46. > :03:52.you were sitting there? It was really long but from the time that

:03:53. > :03:58.it ended from the time the police were running and telling us to go to

:03:59. > :04:05.the place where we were quite, it was a tricky long time. Do you think

:04:06. > :04:11.you would be coming back here or has this turned you off? I think I would

:04:12. > :04:19.come here, I feel like it was handled here and I felt very safe.

:04:20. > :04:24.I'm not afraid to come here again. I visit my grandson is every two or

:04:25. > :04:29.three months and I will not stop. Thank you both very much. Just a few

:04:30. > :04:33.of the tourists who were in the Capitol building when the event took

:04:34. > :04:40.place and they had to walk through the visitor centre to get into the

:04:41. > :04:44.buildings and it was at the visitor centre where the gunman opened fire.

:04:45. > :04:50.It seems to have been shut down quickly. Reports are that the gunman

:04:51. > :04:53.has been injured, a policeman injured and a female bystander but

:04:54. > :05:00.security officers said there immediate investigation is over and

:05:01. > :05:04.the Loch down has ended. Barbara, thank you to you and your debts for

:05:05. > :05:10.speaking to us. We will hear more from Paddy K, who will bring us the

:05:11. > :05:13.latest from Washington in 20 minutes. Let's move to another

:05:14. > :05:14.story. More than 70 people are now known

:05:15. > :05:17.to have died in a suicide attack At least 300 others

:05:18. > :05:27.were injured in the attack. The area was more crowded

:05:28. > :05:32.than usual as many of Lahore's minority Christians had gathered

:05:33. > :05:33.to celebrate Easter Jamaat-ul-Ahrar, a taliban

:05:34. > :05:43.splinter group has said Jamaat-ul-Ahrar, a taliban splinter

:05:44. > :05:45.group has said It has carried out several other

:05:46. > :05:48.attacks on Pakistani civilians and security forces

:05:49. > :05:49.in recent months. Eerily quiet this morning,

:05:50. > :05:55.the park where Families had come here

:05:56. > :06:01.to celebrate Easter, but instead, were

:06:02. > :06:04.caught up in carnage. A place where children came to play,

:06:05. > :06:12.now the site of a massacre. 16-year-old Sharon had been

:06:13. > :06:16.at the park with his brother. His mother was too

:06:17. > :06:26.distressed to speak. All she could tell us

:06:27. > :06:30.was that the last time she saw him The body of 16-year-old Sharon has

:06:31. > :06:36.just been brought outside his family He's just one victim among

:06:37. > :06:42.the dozens killed in yesterday's blasts and many families

:06:43. > :06:45.across Lahore will be Christians were the target

:06:46. > :06:51.of the bombing by a splinter group Christians and Muslims,

:06:52. > :06:59.men, women and children, When we came to know,

:07:00. > :07:06.our hearts broke. We could not handle ourselves

:07:07. > :07:10.because we knew it was Sunday, many Christians and Muslims

:07:11. > :07:14.would be gathered there. And when we came to know

:07:15. > :07:16.that the majority was Christian, even the Muslims, all are human

:07:17. > :07:21.beings, and really, we cried. Pakistan's Foreign Minister Nawaz

:07:22. > :07:26.Sharif visited survivors today. He vowed to hunt down

:07:27. > :07:30.those responsible. He admitted that Pakistan's

:07:31. > :07:32.different security agencies needed to be better coordinated

:07:33. > :07:38.in the fight against terrorism. This is another attempt

:07:39. > :07:41.by government and security forces to show strength in the face

:07:42. > :07:46.of a national tragedy. But for families burying

:07:47. > :07:48.their dead today, any security operation

:07:49. > :07:55.will be of little consolation. We saw Pakistan's Prime Minister

:07:56. > :08:09.there but let's here a bit more TRANSLATION: My brothers and

:08:10. > :08:14.sisters, I want to reaffirm my early promise to you that we are keeping a

:08:15. > :08:20.count of each and every drop of blood of our fellow citizens. We are

:08:21. > :08:24.taking revenge will not stop until we take revenge of each drop of

:08:25. > :08:30.blood of our citizens which was built by the terrorists. You know

:08:31. > :08:35.terrorism has become an international challenge. Pakistan is

:08:36. > :08:42.not the only country facing this challenge. Recently we saw similar

:08:43. > :08:44.terrorism at Ankara, Istanbul, Brussels and Paris.

:08:45. > :08:47.When I spoke to Shaimaa Khalil, she gave me an update

:08:48. > :08:57.A lot of distress and grief that also aid her assistant question

:08:58. > :09:04.about why and how this attack was able to happen at the devastating

:09:05. > :09:07.scale it has. We heard from the Prime Minister and it was

:09:08. > :09:12.interesting when you speak to members of the Christian community

:09:13. > :09:17.who say now was Sharif of and other ministers have visited Lahore,

:09:18. > :09:22.visited the wounded and they are able to secure convoys when they

:09:23. > :09:27.come, why can they not secure cars? This is Annalong complaint I've

:09:28. > :09:32.Pakistan's questions that they have been abandoned by the government,

:09:33. > :09:36.they do not provide enough security while they are targeted by

:09:37. > :09:42.extremists, but even though Christians were the target of this

:09:43. > :09:45.uptight it was Muslims and Christians, men, women and many

:09:46. > :09:51.children fell in the suicide bombing. The Pakistan Taliban linked

:09:52. > :10:02.group have also the least a picture of a man allegedly behind the

:10:03. > :10:08.suicide attack, that confirming that on Sunday, when questions were

:10:09. > :10:15.celebrating Easter, he went out and carried out the suicide attack. The

:10:16. > :10:20.neighbourhood you have been to, a lot of people would call this a soft

:10:21. > :10:28.target and it must be a difficult thing to have a place like that

:10:29. > :10:31.secure. And this is the big question because we did hear from the

:10:32. > :10:38.government and from the Army that they will carry out a special

:10:39. > :10:43.paramilitary security operation in the province of Punjab to crack down

:10:44. > :10:47.on the militants, and the questions being asked here are the

:10:48. > :10:54.effectiveness of these operations, how you can keep soft target secure

:10:55. > :10:57.when militants just what in and infiltrate areas like the park we

:10:58. > :11:06.sought yesterday and caused great damage. We will be speaking to

:11:07. > :11:11.Pakistan's ambassadors to the UN later on the programme, but I want

:11:12. > :11:20.to remind you of the breaking news from Washington that a US Capitol

:11:21. > :11:26.police officer was shot at the US Capitol, the shooter was taken into

:11:27. > :11:33.custody. The event unfolded with Congress on recess, Congress was put

:11:34. > :11:38.on lockdown but that soon lifted. A tweet from the DC the least

:11:39. > :11:47.apartment says there has been an ice lidded instant at the capital, there

:11:48. > :11:51.is no active threat to the public. I want to move onto another story we

:11:52. > :12:07.covered extensively, the bombings in Brussels.

:12:08. > :12:09.Belgian police have released the man

:12:10. > :12:19.He'd been charged with involvement in terrorist activities and murder.

:12:20. > :12:29.to charge him in connection with last week's bombings

:12:30. > :12:31.targeted the city's airport and a metro train

:12:32. > :12:35.We've also learned today that the number of people killed

:12:36. > :12:38.in the attacks has gone up to 35, not inlcuding the attackers.

:12:39. > :12:39.Authorities have released these pictures

:12:40. > :12:41.as they try to identify the third airport bomber.

:12:42. > :12:44.The man in the hat on the right has still not been found.

:12:45. > :12:46.It's thought his device didn't detonate.

:12:47. > :12:47.Damian Grammaticas has the latest from Brussels

:12:48. > :12:52.It was confirmed either Belgian Health Minister but for most of

:12:53. > :12:59.those injured in the attacks have now died in hospital, and that

:13:00. > :13:08.brings that total toll of casualties to 35. Meanwhile some significant

:13:09. > :13:11.developments. We had the release of security camera footage from the

:13:12. > :13:24.airport. We had seen stills but police released this footage showing

:13:25. > :13:30.the three men walking through. Two suicide bombers, but the third man

:13:31. > :13:37.on the right, police say they are still trying to identify him. The

:13:38. > :13:42.video has been released at the same time as a man police had been called

:13:43. > :13:47.in, they identified him as Faysal C, had been set free. There had been

:13:48. > :13:53.reports police work connecting him with being tipped third figure in

:13:54. > :13:56.the video that they have been unable to hand a magistrate said there was

:13:57. > :14:02.not sufficient evidence to hold him and ordered him released, so police

:14:03. > :14:05.continued their enquiries but this is a setback because that third man

:14:06. > :14:07.may still be on the run. If you're away from the TV you can

:14:08. > :14:11.get all the latest developments on the Brussels attacks

:14:12. > :14:13.via the BBC News website. There's also this article

:14:14. > :14:15.telling you more about some You can also find and share all that

:14:16. > :14:32.through the BBC News app Now we will hear from BBC Arabic

:14:33. > :14:35.about the fight for a car mirror. The Syrian army says it has the city

:14:36. > :15:53.back under control. -- Palmyra. There's been a shooting

:15:54. > :15:56.at a visitors' centre at the US Capitol, home to the

:15:57. > :15:58.Houses of Congress. The gunman has been caught -

:15:59. > :16:08.a policeman was wounded, And let's take a look at some of the

:16:09. > :16:13.stories did BBC is reporting in our various language services.

:16:14. > :16:16.BBC Mundo are reporting that the top money launderer for the Mexican

:16:17. > :16:20.drug-lord Joaquin Guzman has been arrested.

:16:21. > :16:23.He's suspected of laundering 300 to 400 million dollars a year

:16:24. > :16:25.through a network of companies and currency exchange centres.

:16:26. > :16:27.A tenth-century statue of a Hindu god, Rama,

:16:28. > :16:30.has been returned to a Cambodian temple by an American museum.

:16:31. > :16:32.It was taken during the country's civil war in the 1970s.

:16:33. > :16:34.BBC World Service radio are covering that.

:16:35. > :16:37.Storm Katie in the UK has led to flight cancellations and delays.

:16:38. > :16:39.It's also caused property damage and left thousands without power.

:16:40. > :16:44.There's more about that on the BBC News App.

:16:45. > :16:48.Syrian officials say the government now has full control of the historic

:16:49. > :16:53.city of Palmyra after days of fighting.

:16:54. > :16:59.The Syrian army retook the city after ten months of IS control,

:17:00. > :17:05.IS seized the UNESCO World Heritage site in May last year and set

:17:06. > :17:13.about destroying some of the ancient ruins and temples.

:17:14. > :17:23.However, Syria's antiquities chief said...

:17:24. > :17:33.Syrian troops relaxing in the streets of Palmyra

:17:34. > :17:35.after what appears to have been a victory

:17:36. > :17:39.It took them just a few weeks to recapture the area which lies

:17:40. > :17:41.on a vital highway leading from Damascus

:17:42. > :17:54.They had significant support from the Russian air force.

:17:55. > :18:05.The militants took control of Palmyra in May last year and began a

:18:06. > :18:07.campaign of destruction. They published this photograph showing

:18:08. > :18:15.one of several ancient tombs being blown up. But this new video seems

:18:16. > :18:19.to show that the expected wholesale destruction of the UNESCO world

:18:20. > :18:28.heritage site has not happened, to the relief of archaeologists

:18:29. > :18:35.everywhere, especially in Syria. When my son was born, it was one of

:18:36. > :18:42.the most oedipal days of my life. The second most oedipal day was the

:18:43. > :18:53.news that Palmyra was not destroyed completely. The site was saved

:18:54. > :18:59.partly because the top archaeologist refused to reveal the whereabouts of

:19:00. > :19:05.hundreds of artefacts. He was later beheaded. But this is also an

:19:06. > :19:11.important step teacher at Jane, because from here the Syrian

:19:12. > :19:18.military can broaden its offensive against Islamic State forces, and

:19:19. > :19:31.the Syrian army is going to move against Raqqa, regard it as Islamic

:19:32. > :19:35.State's headquarters in Syria. The Russian air force would probably be

:19:36. > :19:42.behind all this. The combination of Russian air strikes and re-energised

:19:43. > :19:45.Syrian forces on the ground is putting President Assad and the

:19:46. > :19:49.Kremlin at the forefront of the battle against Islamic State in this

:19:50. > :19:53.country, and western leaders are not complaining.

:19:54. > :19:55.Hanan Razek from BBC Arabic explained this isn't just

:19:56. > :20:10.There are around 70,000 people who used to live in Palmyra or around it

:20:11. > :20:18.before the Civil War. After the war started, they fled to other cities

:20:19. > :20:27.or outside the country, and around 15,000 stayed after Isis seized the

:20:28. > :20:35.city last year and its many people, very poor eagle who could not afford

:20:36. > :20:40.to travel outside the city. Those numbers are from activists, we can

:20:41. > :20:47.not verify them in the Endsleigh, but it is between ten and 15,000,

:20:48. > :20:53.and after the recapture of the city yesterday, we got news from local

:20:54. > :20:57.journalists that they were evacuated by IS come they called on people

:20:58. > :21:04.with loudspeakers and told them to get out of the city before the

:21:05. > :21:11.German troops came in. So Islamic State militants told people there to

:21:12. > :21:16.leave. Did you call heed that call? We do not know yet because it is

:21:17. > :21:22.tricky to get much information that that is what we are getting from

:21:23. > :21:27.local journalists. One journalist who got into the city today said it

:21:28. > :21:36.was like a city of ghosts, there was no one there. A reminder of our

:21:37. > :21:42.breaking news, a man has been taken into custody after a shooting in

:21:43. > :21:47.Washington, DC. A police officer and female bystander were wounded. We

:21:48. > :21:54.are expecting a news conference shortly and will bring it to you

:21:55. > :22:00.when it comes. Let's move on to an stories. -- business stories.

:22:01. > :22:05.The first Occulus Rift headsets have gone on sale today.

:22:06. > :22:08.The virtual reality headset is said to be the most immersive made yet -

:22:09. > :22:14.and the first of a range of different brands to go on sale

:22:15. > :22:25.Hope they do a business aren't virtual reality headsets? There are

:22:26. > :22:35.conflicting figures that ending on to you believe. One market believes

:22:36. > :22:42.it will be worth 16 billion, another firm thinks it is closer to 70

:22:43. > :22:48.million dollars by 2020. The key thing is that all techies agree that

:22:49. > :22:52.virtual reality is the next week thing and so the first one to market

:22:53. > :23:00.is a big deal. In this case we're talking about the oculus rift. The

:23:01. > :23:05.company was bought by Facebook hummer which can give this product

:23:06. > :23:11.some heft and grow the market, but most people in the application for

:23:12. > :23:16.this will be in gaming and so all eyes will be on Sony. Later this

:23:17. > :23:18.year it will release its virtual reality headset. Thank you,

:23:19. > :23:25.Michelle. Let's turn to the UN. The UN estimates one third

:23:26. > :23:27.of all food produce globally is wasted - that's about one

:23:28. > :23:29.trillion dollars worth. Steve Evans has been looking

:23:30. > :23:44.at a possible solution The waste we humans make. Every day

:23:45. > :23:50.13,000 tonnes of garbage from the citizens of soul get dumped on

:23:51. > :23:57.landfill sites. A mountain of waste, but it is not as bad as it was. The

:23:58. > :24:03.waste left has fallen dramatically, from 35,000 tonnes a day. It is a

:24:04. > :24:12.third of what it does. How has the city done it? There is one of the

:24:13. > :24:16.heroes. She has cut the waste from food dramatically. She even tries

:24:17. > :24:25.out potato dealings so they weigh less and don't take it so much room.

:24:26. > :24:29.TRANSLATION: We do sink waste is not as difficult as you think. In the

:24:30. > :24:38.past we were attacked a fixed rate to dump waste. Now I am trying to

:24:39. > :24:43.read used the amount we throw away. At her housing complex where it is a

:24:44. > :24:52.smart waste bin. It weighs the waste. She identifies herself with a

:24:53. > :24:57.card and it then registers how much waste she has left. At the end of

:24:58. > :25:03.the month, she and other residents get charged for the waste they

:25:04. > :25:11.leave. The less weight, the lower the bill. There is CCTV monitoring

:25:12. > :25:20.but this system is based on trust and self-interest. The less waste

:25:21. > :25:28.you leave, the more money you make. A reminder of our top story from

:25:29. > :25:36.Washington, DC, where a US Capitol police officer was shot. The shooter

:25:37. > :25:43.was taken into custody. The event unfolded with Congress in recess and

:25:44. > :25:50.lawmakers back in their districts where the White House was briefly on

:25:51. > :25:56.lockdown. It was soon lifted. We are waiting for a press conference, so

:25:57. > :26:11.when it begins we will bring it to you. But for now we will say

:26:12. > :26:19.goodbye. We will take the lift back at the weather in the last 24 hours

:26:20. > :26:21.in a moment, but first we are off to America. A couple of areas of low
