:00:10. > :00:14.Hello, I'm Ros Atkins, this is Outside Source.

:00:15. > :00:20.In Syria, so-called Islmaic State has launched a number of deadly bomb

:00:21. > :00:21.attacks in two government strongholds on the

:00:22. > :00:33.Independent candidate Alexander Van der Bellen has won a very narrow

:00:34. > :00:38.His rival would have become the first far-right head of state

:00:39. > :00:42.We'll go to the US in a moment because a police officer has been

:00:43. > :00:45.cleared of charges related to the death of a black man

:00:46. > :00:48.Freddie Gray's death caused days of massive protests

:00:49. > :00:58.Plus, in 15 minutes, a report from our LA correspondent

:00:59. > :01:16.on a property dispute between Katy Perry and some nuns.

:01:17. > :01:19.Freddie Gray was a young black American man who died a week

:01:20. > :01:22.after he was critically injured in police custody.

:01:23. > :01:24.Today, a Baltimore police officer has

:01:25. > :01:28.been acquitted of assault and other charges.

:01:29. > :01:35.Gray's death led to protests and rioting

:01:36. > :01:43.and sparked the Black Lives Matter movement.

:01:44. > :01:45.The city's mayor has asked residents to be "patient and allow

:01:46. > :01:51.the entire process to come to a conclusion", adding,

:01:52. > :02:01."the city is prepared to respond to any disturbance".

:02:02. > :02:12.Can you explain what the prosecutors were alleging this man was involved

:02:13. > :02:18.in? Edward Nero is one of six officers charged in connection to

:02:19. > :02:24.the death of Freddie Gray. He was charged on four counts but in short,

:02:25. > :02:30.first they accused him of our unlawful arrest and also of being

:02:31. > :02:35.reckless by failing to put Freddie Gray, buckle him in a seat belt, as

:02:36. > :02:39.he was loaded into a police van, and the police van is crucial when you

:02:40. > :02:42.look at the case of Freddie Gray. What happened to him when he was

:02:43. > :02:48.travelling in the police van has been the centre of a lot of the

:02:49. > :02:53.cases against these officers. We know he travelled handcuffed and

:02:54. > :02:56.shackled in that police van and was not wearing a seat belt and at some

:02:57. > :03:03.point suffered severe spinal injuries and died a week later as a

:03:04. > :03:07.result. The defence for Edward Nero said he was not the key arresting

:03:08. > :03:12.officer when it comes to the arrest of Freddie Gray. They say it should

:03:13. > :03:17.not have been up to him to ensure Freddie Gray was wearing a seat

:03:18. > :03:21.belt, that was the responsibility of the police van driver, and he was

:03:22. > :03:27.cleared of those charges. Each trial has to consider the charges, but is

:03:28. > :03:31.there an umbrella process looking at the incident and trying to work out

:03:32. > :03:37.what might have happened? Not in terms of the legal framework. It is

:03:38. > :03:42.trial by trial and last December I covered the first case that came to

:03:43. > :03:46.trial, the trial of officer William Porterfield was accused of more

:03:47. > :03:52.serious charges including manslaughter. The difference in that

:03:53. > :03:57.case it was a trial by jury, officer Nero wanted a judge only in this

:03:58. > :04:01.trial. In the case of William Porterfield jury could not make a

:04:02. > :04:05.decision and it was declared a mistrial which means it will come

:04:06. > :04:10.back to court this summer, as well as the four remaining trials. Caesar

:04:11. > :04:17.Goodson is charged with second degree murder and that case will be

:04:18. > :04:20.included. What about the variety of campaigns we have seen in Baltimore?

:04:21. > :04:30.There have not been large-scale protests. There were protesters

:04:31. > :04:38.outside courts earlier today, and a lot of anger and frustration. The

:04:39. > :04:43.words that come up when you hear from protesters in the context of

:04:44. > :04:47.this case is accountability. As you said, the mayor has said that people

:04:48. > :04:52.need to wait for the trials to cum food and to wait for the process to

:04:53. > :04:56.be complete but the protesters want to ensure that someone is held

:04:57. > :05:03.accountable for the death of Freddie Gray. Thank you very much.

:05:04. > :05:12.And now the sport. It has been a strange day. We knew Louis van Gaal

:05:13. > :05:16.was going to be sacked, we knew it from Saturday, and we knew this

:05:17. > :05:19.morning he was sacked, but it is only in the last hour Manchester

:05:20. > :05:24.United confirmed this. They posted this on their website. A statement

:05:25. > :05:31.confirming he has gone and a quote from him. Louis van Gaal said he is

:05:32. > :05:35.disappointed not to be able to complete the intended three-year

:05:36. > :05:39.plan but thanks the staff, owners, players and fans and calls the fans

:05:40. > :05:45.the best in the world. We can bring in John Watson. It has been an

:05:46. > :05:48.interesting day. When Manchester United sacked David Moyes they said

:05:49. > :05:53.maybe they would have done things differently but they seem to have

:05:54. > :05:59.done things similarly in terms of communications. I do not think

:06:00. > :06:02.either Manchester United foresaw this information would come out in

:06:03. > :06:08.this way. We are not sure where these details came from that were

:06:09. > :06:13.circulating on Saturday night. News of Louis van Gaal's departure

:06:14. > :06:17.overshadowing the FA Cup win, but I do not think the club have

:06:18. > :06:23.controlled the way the information has come out and perhaps it has come

:06:24. > :06:28.from sources close to Jose Mourinho and his agent, because they were

:06:29. > :06:32.determined, certainly the vice-chairman was determined to see

:06:33. > :06:38.Louis van Gaal's reign as a success and wanted him to be successful and

:06:39. > :06:44.I am sure the club, the vice-chairman would have allowed --

:06:45. > :06:50.like to have allows Louis van Gaal and the club to enjoy the FA Cup

:06:51. > :06:54.success but just two days after that victory, and they were having to

:06:55. > :06:59.deal with the fallout of his departure from the club and I think

:07:00. > :07:02.the reason it has taken so long to come out with a statement, which we

:07:03. > :07:08.have had in the last hour, despite knowing he was going on Saturday, I

:07:09. > :07:11.think they have tried to come up with a severance package with Louis

:07:12. > :07:16.van Gaal. They said earlier that there has been a delay in bringing

:07:17. > :07:20.that out because they wanted to allow Louis van Gaal to leave the

:07:21. > :07:23.country, which he has done. I did not think Manchester United have

:07:24. > :07:30.been able to shape his departure in quite the way they would have liked.

:07:31. > :07:40.Good to speak to you. An interesting tweet from a Norwegian pro.

:07:41. > :07:42.Retired Norwegian footballer Jan Age Fjortof tweeted:

:07:43. > :07:45."Man Utd signed Van Gaal because he was Van Gaal.

:07:46. > :07:47.Now they fire him because he is Van Gaal.

:07:48. > :07:48.Who to blame? Not Van Gaal."

:07:49. > :07:53.That is what has come to pass earned in the end, if you do not get in the

:07:54. > :07:54.Champions League, you will be in trouble as Manchester United

:07:55. > :07:55.manager. There probably aren't too many

:07:56. > :07:57.people who are going to miss Louis Van Gaal's style of football,

:07:58. > :08:00.but we will miss him - and his unique way of

:08:01. > :08:02.dealing with the press. The fans are shouting every week,

:08:03. > :08:16.Louis van Gaal's army. I was squeezing my ass,

:08:17. > :08:34.but it was the wrong expression, because there you are doing that,

:08:35. > :08:38.and so I have twisted my ass on the A lot of times, I use the word

:08:39. > :08:47.horny to my players. We played the best match

:08:48. > :08:49.of the season. Is that how highly you rate

:08:50. > :08:51.the performance? Do you think it was

:08:52. > :09:00.a foul on Falcao in It is not in the books that

:09:01. > :09:19.somebody has to grab up with the hair and then

:09:20. > :09:32.pull it behind. And only in sex masochism,

:09:33. > :09:37.then it is allowed. Andy Murray lost first two

:09:38. > :09:39.sets to Radek Stepanek But he took the third 6-0,

:09:40. > :09:58.and a break 2 up in the fourth Frustrating because he was on a

:09:59. > :10:00.roll. I do not think many of us saw that coming. He just beat Djokovic

:10:01. > :10:03.in Rome a few days ago. Remember that boxing match

:10:04. > :10:04.between Nick Blackwell Nick Blackwell ended up

:10:05. > :10:12.in an induced coma after the fight. Blackwell has been

:10:13. > :10:14.critical of the Eubank family in an interview

:10:15. > :10:19.with the Sun newspaper. He said, "My family and friends

:10:20. > :10:22.were begging them not to talk, He's referring to the fact

:10:23. > :10:45.Chris Eubank Jr decided But Chris Eubank

:10:46. > :10:47.responded over Twitter: "Pretty shocked at what Nick has

:10:48. > :10:50.said about me and my father today. "Regardless of how he feels

:10:51. > :11:01.about me, I still wish him nothing That one is still rumbling on as a

:11:02. > :11:08.story. In a few minutes we will get into a strange report from the BBC

:11:09. > :11:11.LA correspondent. The story is about a property dispute between Katy

:11:12. > :11:17.Perry and a group of elderly nuns. Here in England, a restaurant owner

:11:18. > :11:20.has been jailed for six years for manslaughter after ignoring

:11:21. > :11:21.a customer's request Paul Wilson died within minutes

:11:22. > :11:28.of eating a takeaway from the Indian Garden restaurant

:11:29. > :11:31.in North Yorkshire two years ago. This is Paul Wilson about to order

:11:32. > :11:38.a meal which would kill him. He knows he has a severe nut allergy

:11:39. > :11:43.and tells the waiter. It is reason even written

:11:44. > :11:49.on the chit - "No Nuts". But the meal the 38-year-old walked

:11:50. > :11:52.out with did have nuts in. Just before he ate it,

:11:53. > :11:58.he called his mum. He was home, he'd got his curry

:11:59. > :12:04.and his last words were, "I love The restaurant owner,

:12:05. > :12:09.Mohammed Zaman, was today convicted With large business debts,

:12:10. > :12:21.he'd cut corners and swapped expensive almond powder

:12:22. > :12:23.for cheaper ground nut powder And it wasn't the first time

:12:24. > :12:28.a customer with a nut allergy had As soon as I tasted it,

:12:29. > :12:32.I could feel my lips swelling up Student Ruby Scott ordered

:12:33. > :12:37.a supposedly nut-free meal from one of Zaman's other restaurants a few

:12:38. > :12:40.weeks earlier, but it I don't know whether they just don't

:12:41. > :12:50.know how severe a peanut allergy is. I think a lot of people think

:12:51. > :12:53.is just a stomach ache, but it is actually

:12:54. > :12:54.very life-threatening. On the night Paul Wilson died,

:12:55. > :13:00.police were quickly round here Zaman's food had again caused

:13:01. > :13:05.a severe allergic reaction. Then, astonishingly,

:13:06. > :13:11.the day afterwards, Trading Standards came here to buy

:13:12. > :13:14.a meal which apparently had no nuts in it, but when they tested it

:13:15. > :13:17.they found it had enough peanuts to potentially kill

:13:18. > :13:20.someone with the allergy. Police say the case sends

:13:21. > :13:24.out a warning. The message goes out that if anybody

:13:25. > :13:27.else operates their business in a similar sort of way,

:13:28. > :13:30.they could possibly face prosecution Paul Wilson's parents say their only

:13:31. > :13:34.son was their whole world. His dad says Paul

:13:35. > :13:38.was his best friend. The restaurant owner responsible

:13:39. > :13:41.for his death repeatedly lied during his trial and was utterly

:13:42. > :13:44.indifferent to the health This is Outside Source live

:13:45. > :14:04.from the BBC newsroom. The Islamic State group says it

:14:05. > :14:06.carried out the deadly attacks on two Syrian cities

:14:07. > :14:08.in President Assad's The area has been regarded

:14:09. > :14:15.as comparatively safe If you're outside of the UK,

:14:16. > :14:20.it's World News America next. It's got more on President Obama's

:14:21. > :14:22.visit to Vietnam. He's lifted a ban on the US

:14:23. > :14:25.selling weapons to the saying the ban was a lingering

:14:26. > :14:31.vestige of the Cold War. And in the UK, the News at Ten

:14:32. > :14:35.will report on fracking being given Fracking is the process of drilling

:14:36. > :14:45.into rock to release natural gas. Katy Perry is locked in a battle

:14:46. > :14:48.with a group of elderly nuns over the sale of a convent in Los

:14:49. > :14:51.Angeles. But here's James Cook

:14:52. > :14:57.with the case so far. It feels more like a

:14:58. > :15:01.castle than a convent. This imposing villa has 21 bathrooms

:15:02. > :15:05.and some 60 bedrooms. The property is at the heart

:15:06. > :15:12.of a bitter battle. This is Sister Catherine Rose.

:15:13. > :15:18.Do you think we could get in? At 87, Sister Catherine Rose finds

:15:19. > :15:24.herself locked out of her old home, and fighting the church

:15:25. > :15:27.she spent a lifetime serving. The sisters of the Immaculate Heart

:15:28. > :15:33.say they sold their house to a Los Angeles restaurateur,

:15:34. > :15:35.but the archbishop had Katy Perry thought she had bought

:15:36. > :15:45.the property for $15 million, and the church is now fighting

:15:46. > :15:48.in the courts to ensure that that That has left the nuns

:15:49. > :15:53.feeling badly let down. The archdiocese, they claim,

:15:54. > :15:57.has not given the order a single How I feel is sad and betrayed,

:15:58. > :16:08.and to think that, at our age now, that we have to be fighting

:16:09. > :16:11.to keep our own property You can see why there is competition

:16:12. > :16:20.to own it, but unfortunately for the Catholic Church,

:16:21. > :16:21.that competition has turned into a rather

:16:22. > :16:27.tawdry and unholy dispute. Even the sisters who once lived

:16:28. > :16:30.and prayed here together Some actually think

:16:31. > :16:33.the Katy Perry deal When we met her, she was

:16:34. > :16:41.a very engaging person. She was charming, and the Archbishop

:16:42. > :16:45.assured us that all the funds that we received from our property

:16:46. > :16:53.will be for the sisters only. Whatever the courts

:16:54. > :16:56.decide for the convent, The nuns involved are not

:16:57. > :17:16.planning a vow of silence. We have heard stories from the US,

:17:17. > :17:20.Venezuela, UK, France, Syria, Iraq and Austria. Now we turn to Turkey.

:17:21. > :17:22.Turkey is hosting the first United Nations Humanitarian Summit.

:17:23. > :17:31.Here are some of the pictures that have come in.

:17:32. > :17:33.Turkey's President Erdogan and Angela Merkel present.

:17:34. > :17:35.The focus is generation of money and support for humanitarian causes.

:17:36. > :17:39.Turkey hosts the largest number of refugees of any country.

:17:40. > :17:58.There are 2.7 million Syrian refugees in Turkey.

:17:59. > :18:00.President Erdogan is engaged on how the world picks up

:18:01. > :18:03.He has written an article in the Guardian today,

:18:04. > :18:06.saying the world needs to do more, and that Turkey spends a bigger

:18:07. > :18:09.share of its GDP on humanitarian aid than any other.

:18:10. > :18:11.Others have questioned whether its appropriate

:18:12. > :18:14.for Turkey to host - it's been accused of human

:18:15. > :18:17.For instance, the UN wants to send investigators to the Kurdish

:18:18. > :18:29.Locals there are claiming that Turkish forces massacred around

:18:30. > :18:33.Our Middle East editor Jeremy Bowen went to the town

:18:34. > :18:40.In a beautiful place, these are dark times.

:18:41. > :18:44.War has come back to the mountains of southeastern Turkey.

:18:45. > :18:52.The long fight between Turkey and the PKK, the armed

:18:53. > :19:00.For 78 days from December to March, the focus was Cizre,

:19:01. > :19:08.When the Turks lifted the curfew and pulled back,

:19:09. > :19:11.local people went into three basements, looking for traces

:19:12. > :19:15.of at least 100 men, women and children who sheltered there.

:19:16. > :19:25.Only a few charred bone fragments were left -

:19:26. > :19:35.local people believe Turkish security forces massacred them.

:19:36. > :19:38.On the 30th of January, Kurdish MPs were on the phone,

:19:39. > :19:40.promising ambulances and evacuation, when Turkish forces stormed

:19:41. > :19:58.Before the troops left, they bulldozed flat the ruins

:19:59. > :20:00.of the areas wrecked in the fighting.

:20:01. > :20:08.No crime scene investigators were able to get to the basements

:20:09. > :20:17.Human Rights Watch suspects a cover up.

:20:18. > :20:24.This man took me to the site of the basements.

:20:25. > :20:30.He says Turkey's European allies are letting it get away with murder.

:20:31. > :20:32.Turning a blind eye to get Turkish help with the wider

:20:33. > :20:41.TRANSLATION: Europe blatantly watched all those atrocities

:20:42. > :20:47.I'm not bothered about Europe any more.

:20:48. > :20:50.What they did or didn't do, the whole world is responsible

:20:51. > :20:57.The UN wants to send human rights investigators to this wasteland.

:20:58. > :21:01.There is no physical trace left of the lives,

:21:02. > :21:04.the thousands of civilians, Kurdish civilians, who lived

:21:05. > :21:10.But this is about much more than the personal tragedies.

:21:11. > :21:15.It is deeply involved in the war in Syria

:21:16. > :21:24.The EU hopes that Turkey will be a big part of the solution

:21:25. > :21:29.So instability in Turkey is a problem for Europe and it's

:21:30. > :21:38.Violence has spread to Ankara, the capital.

:21:39. > :21:46.In March, a PKK suicide bomber killed 37.

:21:47. > :21:48.The Turkish government denies any wrongdoing in Cizre.

:21:49. > :21:54.It says the PKK are the ones that kill civilians.

:21:55. > :21:58.What they did was they held them as human shields and they did not

:21:59. > :22:03.While we were there, not one person complained to me

:22:04. > :22:13.Well, Turkey would not kill its own citizens.

:22:14. > :22:16.Turkey has never done this before, it will never do it now.

:22:17. > :22:25.Turkey's military operations have moved on.

:22:26. > :22:38.This town is near the borders with Syria and Iraq -

:22:39. > :22:41.the Turks say they are going to finish the PKK once and for all.

:22:42. > :22:48.Her 20-year-old son was killed in Cizre's basements.

:22:49. > :23:00.Politics change - heartbreak stays the same.

:23:01. > :23:07.If you would like more background and context to Jeremy's report, if

:23:08. > :23:12.you go to the BBC News website and put Turkey into the search you will

:23:13. > :23:14.quickly find that and if you speak Turkish, our colleagues at covering

:23:15. > :23:17.the story. A tour group in Australia

:23:18. > :23:20.witnessed a rare sight - Here it is described by one man

:23:21. > :24:52.who was on the boat. Quite something, is in it? If you

:24:53. > :24:57.want to show that to people if you go to the BBC News app and go to the

:24:58. > :25:00.most watched videos you can find it and share it with whoever you like.

:25:01. > :25:01.See you
