:00:10. > :00:11.Hello, I'm Nuala McGovern, this is Outside Source.

:00:12. > :00:16.The Rio Olympics Games start later this week.

:00:17. > :00:19.But the water at some of the venues is still filthy,

:00:20. > :00:22.Cleaning up the water was one of the key promises

:00:23. > :00:28.I'm Babita Sharma in Rio, I've been asking the city's mayor

:00:29. > :00:39.He says there is nothing to worry about.

:00:40. > :00:47.What you have is some reports saying for example, the beaches in Rio has

:00:48. > :00:49.bacteria that kills you. All of the population of Rio would be dead for

:00:50. > :00:50.now if it was true. You've probably heard by now

:00:51. > :00:53.about the row between Donald Trump and the parents of a Muslim soldier

:00:54. > :00:55.who died serving Well the BBC have spoken to Mr

:00:56. > :01:00.and Mrs Khan, I'll play A Russian military helicopter has

:01:01. > :01:03.been shot down in Syria, Moscow says it was on a

:01:04. > :01:09.humanitarian mission. And I've got a report to show

:01:10. > :01:12.you about how the mobile game Pokemon Go has been helping a young

:01:13. > :01:33.man with autism. Just days before the opening

:01:34. > :01:37.of the Olympics Games, a new study by the Associated Press

:01:38. > :01:39.says that Rio's That's not good news

:01:40. > :01:45.for the 1,400 athletes who take Raw human sewage is the main

:01:46. > :01:52.problem. The most contaminated points

:01:53. > :01:55.are the Rodrigo de Freitas Lagoon, where rowing will take place,

:01:56. > :01:58.and the Gloria Marina, the starting In March last year, sampling

:01:59. > :02:08.at the Lagoon revealed an astounding 1.73 billion

:02:09. > :02:13.adenoviruses per litre. That is a family of viruses

:02:14. > :02:15.that cause infections This June, the readings were lower,

:02:16. > :02:21.but still high at 248 Compare that to California,

:02:22. > :02:28.where viral readings in the thousands per litre

:02:29. > :02:36.are enough to set off alarm bells. Let's get more from

:02:37. > :02:51.Babita Sharma in Rio. Thank you. It is that report that

:02:52. > :02:56.many people are focusing on today, it was published in the early hours

:02:57. > :03:01.of Monday. With just the Olympics starting days away. With all those

:03:02. > :03:05.concerns about whether or not the waterways are fit for purpose, we

:03:06. > :03:12.are expecting around 1400 athletes to be taking part in those events

:03:13. > :03:18.taking place in one of our pay and Lagua where you mentioned, the

:03:19. > :03:24.canoeing is taking place. -- Guarnabara Bay. Those athletes could

:03:25. > :03:27.for violently ill according to the Associated Press. It depends who you

:03:28. > :03:33.speak to. Officials saying that is not the case, they are doing regular

:03:34. > :03:37.tests, hour by hour, day by day and passing the rules and regulations

:03:38. > :03:41.required in order for the water to be safe to compete in. That is

:03:42. > :03:46.something very much in the uppermost of people's mines, is this city

:03:47. > :03:54.ready to stage its first Olympics in South America? -- people's minds.

:03:55. > :03:57.The city's, has become the face of these Olympics and I asked him

:03:58. > :04:01.earlier specifically about the waterways and whether or not he had

:04:02. > :04:04.concerns ahead of the start of the game on Friday.

:04:05. > :04:11.Anxious, but things are working pretty well, the venues are ready,

:04:12. > :04:16.the city is ready, everybody is getting excited. It will be amazing.

:04:17. > :04:22.Anxious, why? It is not easy to bring such a big event to a city, it

:04:23. > :04:26.is spread all over the city but it is working well. I am optimistic and

:04:27. > :04:30.anxious, if I was not anxious things would probably not work out. It is

:04:31. > :04:34.good to be optimistic because there is a lot of criticism at the moment.

:04:35. > :04:39.Particularly about the waterways, saying they are just not ready.

:04:40. > :04:48.Dangerous levels of contamination in Guarnabara Bay and Lagoa. Sailing,

:04:49. > :04:51.rowing, canoeing. The athletes shouldn't even be there is the

:04:52. > :04:56.latest we are hearing, what is your assessment? The World Health

:04:57. > :05:01.Organisation does not say that. You have some reports saying that the

:05:02. > :05:04.beaches in Rio has bacteria that kills you. But all of the population

:05:05. > :05:10.of Rio would be dead right now if that was true. What you can see in

:05:11. > :05:13.Rio is Copacabana beach and everyone in the water. Lots of exaggeration.

:05:14. > :05:17.We face problems especially in Guarnabara Bay, but it is not an

:05:18. > :05:22.Olympic problem. Because where the sailing race will be held is the

:05:23. > :05:26.entrance of Guarnabara Bay, it is pretty clear. Two types of events in

:05:27. > :05:29.the past two years, it will work properly. There is always

:05:30. > :05:33.exaggeration. Let me ask you about the Olympic Village and athlete

:05:34. > :05:36.Village in particular. The Australian athletes who have

:05:37. > :05:40.travelled a very long way to be here, they complained about toilet

:05:41. > :05:46.blockages, wiring not being right, there was a fire outbreak in one of

:05:47. > :05:50.their residences. You said, I can promise you a kangaroo to allay

:05:51. > :05:56.their fears. Surely that is not the right terminology for somebody in

:05:57. > :06:02.your position? No, sadly I did not use only that terminology. I know a

:06:03. > :06:05.bit about diplomacy, we know about people, we want people to feel

:06:06. > :06:09.welcome, we would know about Europeans. We said, they are right,

:06:10. > :06:13.we have a problem here. To excuse myself from them, we will fix the

:06:14. > :06:17.problem and make them feel at home and we will get a kangaroo in front

:06:18. > :06:22.of their building. They brought a kangaroo. Do you wish you hadn't

:06:23. > :06:26.have said that to them? I excuse myself because when you only get

:06:27. > :06:28.that phrase it is impolite, which is something I am not in Brazil is

:06:29. > :06:43.specially is not. We are a very open country,

:06:44. > :06:46.we don't fight, we don't go to war, this is a safe place. We are very

:06:47. > :06:49.welcoming. We did not want to get rid of economic and political blocs,

:06:50. > :06:52.we are a fine country and we are very proud of our country. What do

:06:53. > :06:55.you hope the legacy will be of Rio 2016? The legacy, I just told you,

:06:56. > :07:01.when you look at downtown Rio, the poor areas are completely renovated.

:07:02. > :07:08.The sewage system we are building in the poor areas, 100% sewage, the

:07:09. > :07:12.training around the Maracana, people have been using it. Now is party

:07:13. > :07:17.time, we know how to throw a party much better than everyone else.

:07:18. > :07:21.Edward pies, the mayor of Rio. He said to me, feeling quite anxious

:07:22. > :07:28.about the coming days -- Eduardo Paes that he is also enthusiastic.

:07:29. > :07:32.-- but he is also optimistic. He leaves his post after a number of

:07:33. > :07:37.years at the end of this year, it is in his interest to make sure it goes

:07:38. > :07:41.according to plan. Everybody is looking at the city. You are in a

:07:42. > :07:47.prime location to show our viewers a bit of what is behind you in that

:07:48. > :07:53.beautiful city. We are really lucky, feeling lucky all day because it is

:07:54. > :07:57.Brazilian winter here. 27 degrees, which is perfect for me from London.

:07:58. > :08:02.This is what we can see. Pristine, brand-new, ready to go. This is what

:08:03. > :08:08.the authorities want us to see, the Olympic Park in the centre of your

:08:09. > :08:15.screen. Tennis Centre, the large circular building. Behind that, we

:08:16. > :08:19.have the official, one of two buildings, the aquatic centre, which

:08:20. > :08:26.will be home to the water polo events and the swimming. To the

:08:27. > :08:33.left, three Cariocas, hosting tae kwon do, judo, and just in front of

:08:34. > :08:37.it, I think you can see a shot of that, a pretty mammoth building,

:08:38. > :08:43.that is the velodrome. It will be home to the cycling. Into the far

:08:44. > :08:49.left of that, gymnastics. And then the maria lank aquatics centre,

:08:50. > :08:56.second purpose-built, the famous Brazilian athlete we will see

:08:57. > :09:06.synchronised swimming. Underwater swimming events. Looking pretty

:09:07. > :09:09.good. The true test will be when people descend on here. We are

:09:10. > :09:17.expecting half a million visitors. Tickets sold as we speak, about 20%

:09:18. > :09:21.is left of the venues to fill the capacity. Interesting to see how

:09:22. > :09:25.this shapes our particular with infrastructure with the Newmachar

:09:26. > :09:30.line connecting this part of the city to the South zone that has just

:09:31. > :09:37.opened up today. So far so good but time will tell. A whole new era for

:09:38. > :09:38.Rio. Looking forward to speaking to you throughout the week on outside

:09:39. > :09:44.source. A story coming out of the United

:09:45. > :09:46.States. The mother of a dead American Muslim

:09:47. > :09:49.soldier has hit back at Donald Trump for questioning her silence

:09:50. > :09:53.during a speech by her husband. Her husband, Khizr Khan,

:09:54. > :09:55.attacked the Republican nominee in an emotional speech

:09:56. > :09:57.to the Democratic National Mr Trump later suggested Mrs Khan

:09:58. > :10:03.may not have been allowed to speak. In their first interview

:10:04. > :10:05.with the international media, Mr and Mrs Khan spoke

:10:06. > :10:20.to our North American editor, Donald Trump, in an escalating war

:10:21. > :10:24.of words with the Muslim family of a fall in US soldier. This is one

:10:25. > :10:28.fight people are telling Donald Trump they can't win but at the

:10:29. > :10:31.moment he is not listening -- he can't win. Complaining again on

:10:32. > :10:35.social media he had been a subject of a vicious attack by the family.

:10:36. > :10:39.Their speech about the death of their son, an American Muslim

:10:40. > :10:44.posthumously awarded a Bronze Star, purple heart for heroism has

:10:45. > :10:47.electrified politics. It was at the Democratic convention. When I met

:10:48. > :10:48.them, I asked them, had they committed a vicious attack on Mr

:10:49. > :10:59.trump? He can insult, disrespect women,

:11:00. > :11:03.judges, even the members of his own party yet when an ordinary citizen

:11:04. > :11:07.of this country, a patriotic American Muslim of this country says

:11:08. > :11:13.anything about him, he says he has been viciously attacked. He has

:11:14. > :11:17.different sets of rights. No, we all have the same, equal rights. They

:11:18. > :11:24.were derided by Mr Trump for not having spoken at the convention but

:11:25. > :11:28.what was her reaction? Everyone in the audience felt that without

:11:29. > :11:35.saying a word I was sitting in their heart. I was surprised he doesn't

:11:36. > :11:40.feel the pain. What type of person doesn't feel that pain when you see

:11:41. > :11:45.it. You are attacking Mr Trump over his behaviour, very openly. Isn't

:11:46. > :11:49.there a danger that you are going to get attacked openly as well? In

:11:50. > :11:58.every person's life, there comes a time when you choose to either save

:11:59. > :12:05.what is the call of the time or shy away. I felt, my family supported my

:12:06. > :12:10.stance, we said we should do that. The burden we will equally bear. The

:12:11. > :12:15.normal raw politics is that if you are in a hole, you stop digging --

:12:16. > :12:19.normal law. That is not Donald Trump's style. Not over the family

:12:20. > :12:23.this time but a right old tangle towards the policy towards Ukraine

:12:24. > :12:26.and having previously said he had a close relationship with Vladimir

:12:27. > :12:30.Putin, he has now clarified he has never actually met him. It's not

:12:31. > :12:33.been a great few days for the Republican candidate.

:12:34. > :12:35.Criticism against Donald Trump hasn't been restricted

:12:36. > :12:39.Many inside the Republican Party have also begun to distance

:12:40. > :12:45.themselves from their candidate on this matter.

:12:46. > :12:51.He's said, "While our Party has bestowed upon him the nomination,

:12:52. > :12:53.it is not accompanied by unfettered license to defame those

:12:54. > :13:05.Over the last hour, or so Donald Trump has been

:13:06. > :13:07.addressing a crowd of supporters in Columbus, Ohio.

:13:08. > :13:11.Soon after beginning, he stated his support

:13:12. > :13:23.You know, Hillary will be nothing more than four more years of Obama,

:13:24. > :13:27.four more years of Isis, four more years of a military that is being

:13:28. > :13:33.depleted and not taking care of our vets. She said a few months ago our

:13:34. > :13:38.vets are being taken off, just fine. She said, no, no, it is over

:13:39. > :13:41.exaggerated, I know the vets, I have tremendous support with vets, raised

:13:42. > :13:44.a lot of money and gave a lot of money to vets. I will tell you

:13:45. > :13:47.something, the vets are not being taken care of well, at all.

:13:48. > :13:51.Katty Kay is in our Washington studio.

:13:52. > :13:57.Great to have you with us. I feel like there has been a number of

:13:58. > :14:01.times we have talked about various gaffes, Jon Sobel might have said,

:14:02. > :14:05.tangles, Donald Trump got into. Will this latest one make a difference

:14:06. > :14:09.with his Corps supporters? Interestingly, reporters who are in

:14:10. > :14:15.that hall where he is speaking right now, they are saying amongst his

:14:16. > :14:22.supporters, this controversy over the Khan family doesn't matter very

:14:23. > :14:25.much. It matters to the people in the Republican party. Another

:14:26. > :14:29.Republican saying I am dismayed about the attack and I am appalled,

:14:30. > :14:33.the list goes on, couple of pages of quotes from Republicans not happy

:14:34. > :14:38.about what Mr Trump said. It will be interesting to see depending on how

:14:39. > :14:42.long this lasts in this kind of hyperkinetic media cycle we are in,

:14:43. > :14:45.whether you get Republicans coming out and saying I can't endorse the

:14:46. > :14:50.candidate any more. That would be the next step. So far that hasn't

:14:51. > :14:53.happened but a lot of Republicans all quoted as saying that these

:14:54. > :14:58.attacks were a mistake from Mr Trump. That is quite interesting to

:14:59. > :15:01.talk about, endorsements because the Republican convention is over and a

:15:02. > :15:08.lot of people feel signed, sealed and delivered. But how important are

:15:09. > :15:10.these next couple of months with, I don't know, newspapers, grandees of

:15:11. > :15:15.the Republican party speaking out, can they make a difference? I think

:15:16. > :15:20.if they were going to, they would make a difference to the opinion

:15:21. > :15:25.polls. Basically, you have a lull with August coming up, they don't

:15:26. > :15:28.pay much attention probably to the political campaign until middle of

:15:29. > :15:31.September when the first debate happens. It will be televised

:15:32. > :15:35.between Hillary Clinton and Donald Trump. That will be a very important

:15:36. > :15:39.moment in the campaign. It is sort of hard to believe there are many

:15:40. > :15:44.Americans after a year of this seemingly endless election cycle

:15:45. > :15:46.that there are many Americans left to haven't made up their minds

:15:47. > :15:51.between Donald Trump and Hillary Clinton. If there are some yet to be

:15:52. > :15:55.persuaded, that debate will probably be a critical moment but so were

:15:56. > :15:58.voices from within the Republican party. That can go both ways.

:15:59. > :16:03.Because Donald Trump can say, the establishment of the party is

:16:04. > :16:06.attacking me. I am the antiestablishment candidate, that is

:16:07. > :16:10.why you have always loved me. I am not sure how much weight they have

:16:11. > :16:16.but we will see. We will see if many more voices come out over this issue

:16:17. > :16:18.or any other foreign policy issue. Thank you. We will catch you later

:16:19. > :16:22.on world News America. Coming up in Outside Source

:16:23. > :16:24.business, we'll talk about the online taxi firm Uber,

:16:25. > :16:39.which is merging with its Chinese A man who tried to behead a commuter

:16:40. > :16:42.at a London Underground station has been jailed for life. He was

:16:43. > :16:47.apparently inspired by so-called Islamic State had a history of

:16:48. > :16:49.mental illness. Is our home affairs correspondent June Kelly has been

:16:50. > :17:00.speaking to the victim on that day. He was about to exit the Chew and I

:17:01. > :17:07.remember something shocking happening but I don't remember what

:17:08. > :17:12.the shocking event was -- exit the tube. I remember being punched and

:17:13. > :17:16.kicked on the ground and lost consciousness. I found myself being

:17:17. > :17:22.looked after, expertly, by a junior doctor. What about your throat being

:17:23. > :17:23.slashed? I was asleep for that. Because your throat was slashed

:17:24. > :17:32.three times. I could see in the medical reports

:17:33. > :17:34.that there were three wounds to my neck.

:17:35. > :17:41.This is Outside Source live from the BBC newsroom.

:17:42. > :17:48.A report from the Associated Press says the water at some Olympic

:17:49. > :17:51.venues in Rio is still filthy, despite years of promises

:17:52. > :17:59.Let's take a look at some of the stories that our language services

:18:00. > :18:01.are covering today. US authorities have warned women

:18:02. > :18:04.who are pregnant or trying to get pregnant to avoid an area of Miami

:18:05. > :18:07.because of the threat 14 people in Florida are thought

:18:08. > :18:10.to have contracted A leading air crash expert says

:18:11. > :18:16.he believes flight MH370 Larry Vance told an Australian news

:18:17. > :18:20.programme that a recovered wing section shows evidence

:18:21. > :18:22.that it was extended, That's one of the most read stories

:18:23. > :18:37.on the BBC News app. The city trader who was jailed

:18:38. > :18:43.for Britain's biggest-ever banking fraud said crimes

:18:44. > :18:45.like his could happen again, as workers are under pressure

:18:46. > :18:52.to make profits "no matter what." Kweku Adoboli said he was

:18:53. > :18:54.sorry for his actions - but he thinks the culture of banking

:18:55. > :18:57.hasn't sufficiently changed. He spoke exclusively

:18:58. > :19:04.to our Economics Editor Ka-MAL Ahmed He spoke exclusively

:19:05. > :19:11.to our Economics Editor KamaL Ahmed. He became the very public face of

:19:12. > :19:16.the worst excesses of banking, jailed and Fur ever known as the

:19:17. > :19:20.biggest rogue trader in British banking history. One of the

:19:21. > :19:25.difficult things about coming out of prison is that there is a lot of

:19:26. > :19:30.work to rebuild your life. Today, four years after his conviction,

:19:31. > :19:36.gone are the ?360,000 per year pay packet. He is dependent on friends

:19:37. > :19:40.for support. I began by asking him what caused that first step on a

:19:41. > :19:45.journey into criminality. We started, you know, trying to spread

:19:46. > :19:51.our wings and make profits. Because, in 2009, we were being asked by our

:19:52. > :19:56.senior managers to take more risk. As we got through 2010 and 2011, as

:19:57. > :20:02.we were generating more profits, we started to be told to spread our

:20:03. > :20:07.wings even more. So, you know, we would get e-mails coming through,

:20:08. > :20:11.revenue, revenue, revenue. The court heard dramatic evidence of that hunt

:20:12. > :20:16.for revenue. Fictitious accounts, secret slush runs, he was called the

:20:17. > :20:21.Master fraudster, out of control as bets on the market went wrong and he

:20:22. > :20:24.tried to hide increasing losses. Britain's biggest ever fraud, jail

:20:25. > :20:28.for the rogue city trader who lost more than ?1 billion. Kweku Adoboli

:20:29. > :20:30.Was sentenced to seven years in prison. Now, he is looking for

:20:31. > :20:33.redemption. I have apologised and I will

:20:34. > :20:43.continue apologising. I am devastated, not for myself, but

:20:44. > :20:47.for my institution and the people I worked with. These are not just

:20:48. > :20:52.devices, it is how I feel, I failed. I made mistakes. You will called a

:20:53. > :20:56.liar. I was called a liar and I accept I lied, I was dishonest in

:20:57. > :21:02.the way I was doing things. Has your behaviour changed in banking enough?

:21:03. > :21:06.-- has behaviour changed. Absolutely not. The young people I have spoken

:21:07. > :21:12.to, former colleagues I have spoken to, are still struggling with the

:21:13. > :21:17.same issues. The same conflicts. The same pressures. To achieve, no

:21:18. > :21:20.matter what. This is one Finsbury Avenue in central London, the home

:21:21. > :21:26.of UBS equities training and where Kweku Adoboli used to work. --

:21:27. > :21:29.equities trading. Since his conviction, the banking sector, has
