:00:14. > :00:20.These are some of the main stories. The German and French leaders have

:00:21. > :00:25.defended Europe against remarks by Donald Trump who praised Britain's

:00:26. > :00:29.voted to leave the European Union and said he believed other countries

:00:30. > :00:35.would follow suit. In Kurdistan the death toll from a Boeing 747

:00:36. > :00:37.aeroplane crash has gone over 30. It crashed into a village close to the

:00:38. > :00:46.airport where it was trying to land. We will have some of the best squash

:00:47. > :00:54.action from New York and we will have astonishing footage of the solo

:00:55. > :00:59.race around the world. And we have got a report from South Korea about

:01:00. > :01:15.an effort to rehouse dogs who have been bred for eating.

:01:16. > :01:23.If you are a regular viewer, you know you can access everything

:01:24. > :01:27.coming through the BBC newsroom via our screen. Some important breaking

:01:28. > :01:35.news coming from Turkey. This is writers quoting a newspaper website,

:01:36. > :01:40.and elsewhere in Turkish media, the new year's Eve Istanbul nightclub

:01:41. > :01:45.attack, or the suspect, has been caught in Istanbul. You will

:01:46. > :01:49.remember the attack on New Year's Eve, 39 people lost their lives and

:01:50. > :01:55.over 600 were in the nightclub that was attacked. Since then there have

:01:56. > :02:00.been huge efforts to find the chief suspect. There is speculation he may

:02:01. > :02:09.come from satchel Asia, although that has not been confirmed. He has

:02:10. > :02:14.been found according to the news media. I will bring more

:02:15. > :02:17.confirmation when we get it. In the meantime, that Donald Trump

:02:18. > :02:23.interview with The Times newspaper. Let's focus on what he said about

:02:24. > :02:30.Brexit. I thought the UK was so smart in getting out. You were there

:02:31. > :02:34.and you guys wrote it and put it on the front page. Donald Trump said

:02:35. > :02:40.that Brexit was going to happen. Yes. Right? And it happened and

:02:41. > :02:47.everyone thought I was crazy. Barack Obama said, they are going to the

:02:48. > :02:54.back of the line. Now we are at the front of the cube. I think you are

:02:55. > :03:00.doing great. Countries want their own identity. The UK wanted its own

:03:01. > :03:06.identity, but I do believe this. If they had not been forced to take in

:03:07. > :03:09.all of the refugees, so many of them and with all the problems that

:03:10. > :03:14.entails, you would not have a Brexit. It probably would have

:03:15. > :03:19.worked out. A lot of you have seen that clip and noted what my

:03:20. > :03:23.colleague, Tom Baker men, notice, it is Donald Trump seems to be

:03:24. > :03:30.confusing refugees and EU migrants regarding the Brexit vote. Britain

:03:31. > :03:36.was not forced to take any refugees in the last 12 months. While Michael

:03:37. > :03:39.Gove was doing the interview for the Times, he was the senior member of

:03:40. > :03:44.the government who decided to campaign for Brexit in the spring of

:03:45. > :03:48.last year. After David Cameron resign he announced he would run for

:03:49. > :03:52.the leadership of the Conservative Party, but he did not win and he was

:03:53. > :03:58.sacked from the government by Theresa May. But he remains a

:03:59. > :04:01.Conservative member of Parliament. Here he is today discussing the

:04:02. > :04:10.experience of interviewing Donald Trump. He managed to generate from

:04:11. > :04:15.him compelling news on a variety of issues, including the commitment to

:04:16. > :04:20.a rapid trade deal with Theresa May. Do you trust that? Even if you take

:04:21. > :04:23.Syria, he was praising Russia by getting involved in the Syrian

:04:24. > :04:31.conflict because they were bashing Isis. Now he has said it has helped

:04:32. > :04:35.cause a humanitarian crisis. Which is it? These are diametrically

:04:36. > :04:40.opposite views. When he says he wants a quick trade deal, do you

:04:41. > :04:44.trust him? President Donald Trump will be different from candidate

:04:45. > :04:49.Donald Trump. Some people might say that is a good thing or a bad thing.

:04:50. > :04:55.Some people say it is a dangerous thing. Some things he said as

:04:56. > :05:00.candidates are deeply worrying and I hope he rows back from some of the

:05:01. > :05:03.things he said. Brexit inevitably featured in the interview with the

:05:04. > :05:09.President elect and it will be a central issue of the major speech by

:05:10. > :05:13.Theresa May on Tuesday. Some analysts think that speech helps us

:05:14. > :05:18.understand what has happened to the pound today. It has reached a

:05:19. > :05:24.three-month low. It is lower than it has been for three months. We cannot

:05:25. > :05:28.be sure that the connection is exact, but lots of analysts are

:05:29. > :05:34.saying so. The Prime Minister cannot promise to get into talks on trade

:05:35. > :05:41.deals with the President elect yet. That process cannot start until the

:05:42. > :05:47.UK is out of the European Union. He is Rob Watson, our political

:05:48. > :05:52.correspondent. It depends on what you mean by the word quick. It is

:05:53. > :05:57.absolutely true, until it has left the EU, part of the rules of the

:05:58. > :06:02.membership of the EU is you cannot cut a trade deal until you leave the

:06:03. > :06:05.EU. We are talking about two years in the shortest. But nonetheless,

:06:06. > :06:13.some people will like the tone of Donald Trump. I am going to be crude

:06:14. > :06:17.about this. There is one school of thought and summer assay it is

:06:18. > :06:21.brilliant, it strengthens Theresa May's hand in the negotiations with

:06:22. > :06:26.the EU because she can say, I will get a trade deal with the richest

:06:27. > :06:30.country in the world. The diametrically opposed view is what

:06:31. > :06:36.are we doing? What is Britain doing getting too close to someone like

:06:37. > :06:41.Donald Trump? He is a person that many persons were describing as

:06:42. > :06:47.unfit for office. It cuts both ways. Is this a bit delicate? Theresa May

:06:48. > :06:52.has not met Donald Trump yet and already somebody she defeated in the

:06:53. > :06:56.leadership race has. Yes, it is. A lot of people where I work are

:06:57. > :07:01.saying there is something awful about the British Government having

:07:02. > :07:05.to suck up to Donald Trump because it has burned its bridges with the

:07:06. > :07:11.Brussels. Some people are saying it is shameless and queasy. Lots of

:07:12. > :07:16.other people on the Brexit sides are saying, come on, of course we have

:07:17. > :07:22.got to do deals with the US. A word about the speech, we are short on

:07:23. > :07:26.details, will that change? It is amazing. The referendum was only six

:07:27. > :07:30.one thing for sure, and that is she one thing for sure, and that is she

:07:31. > :07:37.once this process to begin before the end of March. What we will learn

:07:38. > :07:41.is that tomorrow she favours a hard Brexit. She will say something like

:07:42. > :07:46.we are not going to stay in a little bit, we are going to get out. There

:07:47. > :07:51.will be extensive coverage of that speech. You can get it on the BBC

:07:52. > :07:57.News channel or on BBC world News outside the UK. We have got a lot of

:07:58. > :08:08.sport to get through. We finally know who will replace the Formula

:08:09. > :08:11.one world champion. The replacement is Valterri Bottas. It is

:08:12. > :08:18.significant because he will be alongside Lewis Hamilton. Yes, it

:08:19. > :08:23.will be interesting to see how that relationship unfolds in 2017 when

:08:24. > :08:26.the season gets under way. It was a name in the frame when Nico Rosberg

:08:27. > :08:33.surprised many five days after winning the number one spot,

:08:34. > :08:37.announcing he was going to retire. Valterri Bottas has always been

:08:38. > :08:41.linked with that vacancy at Mercedes. He has had relative

:08:42. > :08:46.success with Williams, the team he has been with until today. He picked

:08:47. > :08:51.up his first podium finish and since then he has finished on the podium

:08:52. > :08:56.nine times. He has never actually won a race. When he links up with

:08:57. > :09:00.Lewis Hamilton and Mercedes that will be the first thing on the

:09:01. > :09:04.agenda, to get that first Formula one top spot under his belt.

:09:05. > :09:12.Interesting to hear what Lewis Hamilton said on Twitter. He said,

:09:13. > :09:16.welcome to the team. Perhaps the relationship between them will not

:09:17. > :09:23.be as combustible as it was with Nico Rosberg last season. Toto

:09:24. > :09:27.Wolff, the Mercedes team chief, has said, it is time to see how he can

:09:28. > :09:32.step up to challenge for wins and championships, Valterri Bottas. He

:09:33. > :09:38.will be expected to challenge for those big wins when the season comes

:09:39. > :09:41.around. It has left a vacancy at Williams. Felipe Massa will go into

:09:42. > :09:47.a fourth consecutive season with Williams. He had announced his

:09:48. > :09:53.retirement at the end of last season, but he is back in the with

:09:54. > :09:57.Williams. A hugely experienced driver and he is alongside a

:09:58. > :10:02.relatively inexperienced driver because Williams have announced

:10:03. > :10:06.their line-up. He is an 18-year-old Canadian, he has been a test driver

:10:07. > :10:12.with Williams and he has now got the top job alongside Felipe Massa. It

:10:13. > :10:17.will be interesting to see how he fares because he comes with a huge

:10:18. > :10:24.amount of money behind him from his father, a Canadian businessman, who

:10:25. > :10:29.is estimated to be worth 2.4 billion on the Forbes rich list. He has been

:10:30. > :10:31.instrumental in his son's career and they have moved around the circuit

:10:32. > :10:53.There is Michael Gove popping up in looking for that

:10:54. > :10:56.There is Michael Gove popping up in the sport section! But I do not

:10:57. > :11:01.think it is to do with Chinese football.

:11:02. > :11:03.Teams in the Chinese Super League will only be allowed to play

:11:04. > :11:08.three foreign players in the upcoming season.

:11:09. > :11:11.It says the changes are aimed at addressing

:11:12. > :11:17.irrational investments - we'll see if they work.

:11:18. > :11:22.Some of you will be saying, my football club does irrational

:11:23. > :11:30.investment is no matter what we tell them to do. Carlos Tevez is

:11:31. > :11:36.reportedly on $740,000 a week. You heard that right. We can hear from

:11:37. > :11:41.an academic in Massachusetts, but he also writes about Chinese football

:11:42. > :11:45.for a football blog. Here he is talking about whether he is

:11:46. > :11:51.surprised at this new rule. I am surprised in some ways. The focus is

:11:52. > :11:58.you still have five foreign players on a match day squad, but only three

:11:59. > :12:03.can play. In the past you had five persons at camp and three plus one

:12:04. > :12:08.in terms of who could play. You had three players from Europe or South

:12:09. > :12:16.America and one Asian player. It is surprising perhaps, but the goal is

:12:17. > :12:21.to eliminate some of them, rather than to eliminate the top talent.

:12:22. > :12:26.Does this mean they are intending to try and win the World Cup? They

:12:27. > :12:32.realise ultimately the World Cup requires Chinese players, so it

:12:33. > :12:40.gives more chances for Chinese players to develop their game. It

:12:41. > :12:44.also requires each match day squad has one player under 23 years old,

:12:45. > :12:50.so this is a focus on bringing through the youth talent. In the UK

:12:51. > :12:55.there has been speculation about Diego Costa and whether he will go

:12:56. > :13:02.to China. Will this new rule affect the kind of money being splashed on

:13:03. > :13:08.marquee players? It is meant to give a hint to clubs that they should

:13:09. > :13:15.invest with rationality in mind, whatever that means. But I do think

:13:16. > :13:22.it is more targeted at limiting races rather than top players coming

:13:23. > :13:26.to China, so I would not be surprised if Diego Costa made the

:13:27. > :13:32.move. You have watched Chinese football for a while, is the

:13:33. > :13:36.standard going up? It definitely is. One thing to emphasise over the past

:13:37. > :13:45.year is they reward parity. So you have teams like Shanghai who have

:13:46. > :13:47.great players, so it is not just a power has, it is hopefully more

:13:48. > :13:50.spread out now. It's a nonstop solo yacht race -

:13:51. > :13:55.and the Welsh sailor He may have just

:13:56. > :14:03.broken a world record. It's yet to be verified

:14:04. > :14:06.but his team says he travelled The race is reaching the sharp end -

:14:07. > :14:14.there are only a few days to go - Armel Le Clee is leading but that

:14:15. > :14:30.lead is coming down and down. Hello, everybody, a new 24 hour

:14:31. > :14:38.record. It feels like a long time coming. I should have broken it two

:14:39. > :14:44.months ago. Well, I almost did, but less than by one mile. So very happy

:14:45. > :14:48.about that. Really it is about trying to get as close to our man as

:14:49. > :14:55.possible and I am struggling a bit and I am not catching him up as much

:14:56. > :14:59.as I would like. The race is expected to finish on Thursday on

:15:00. > :15:04.the Atlantic coast on France and all the organisers are predicting a

:15:05. > :15:10.tight finish. Let's switch from France to New York because squash is

:15:11. > :15:13.hosting the champion of champions. Grand Central Station with the

:15:14. > :15:15.squash court right in the middle of it. This is the best rally from over

:15:16. > :15:51.the weekend. Now the grunting is coming! Wow! The

:15:52. > :15:57.rocket is going around the court! He will take off in a minute, surely?

:15:58. > :16:07.That was a very tough rally for both guys. Nicolas Muller against Simon

:16:08. > :16:10.Rosner. They are training partners. It is the quarterfinals today and

:16:11. > :16:16.tomorrow we will bring you the best rally at the same time tomorrow. I

:16:17. > :16:20.want to go back to the story that we broke a few minutes ago about

:16:21. > :16:32.Turkey. The man widely suspected of being the attacker, in the Istanbul

:16:33. > :16:37.nightclub were over 30 people lost their lives. There are multiple

:16:38. > :16:41.sources in Turkish media are all saying the same thing, that the man

:16:42. > :16:47.whose images have been circulated by the Turkish authorities, there were

:16:48. > :16:53.suggestions that he may be connected to a central Asian country, and

:16:54. > :16:58.another said he was connected to China, we do not know, but according

:16:59. > :17:03.to many sources in the Turkish media, the man whose image was

:17:04. > :17:08.shared widely by Turkish authorities as they sought the attacker behind

:17:09. > :17:13.that horror on New Year's Eve, he has been picked up and we expect to

:17:14. > :17:19.get more details on that perhaps this evening, certainly tomorrow. In

:17:20. > :17:25.a few minutes I have a report to show you about race relations in the

:17:26. > :17:29.US. Also what President Obama has achieved. We will play the report in

:17:30. > :17:41.full in a minute. A year and a half ago 30 British

:17:42. > :17:46.tourists died in an attack in Tunisia and an inquest said some of

:17:47. > :17:50.them might be alive if security forces had acted more quickly. Let's

:17:51. > :18:05.quit more details from Daniela Ralph.

:18:06. > :18:11.As the hearing began the names of those who died were read out,

:18:12. > :18:16.followed by a minute's silence, 30 British tourists murdered on

:18:17. > :18:21.holiday. They included three generations of one family, married

:18:22. > :18:28.couples and a teenager. The inquest heard they had needlessly lost their

:18:29. > :18:33.lives. Mobile phone footage shows the chaos and confusion during the

:18:34. > :18:39.attack. Families watched it in court, listening to the sound of

:18:40. > :18:43.gunfire and the sense of panic. The gunman was a 23-year-old who was

:18:44. > :18:50.eventually shot dead by the security forces. But he had been intent on

:18:51. > :18:56.killing tourists. The inquest also watched CCTV footage from around the

:18:57. > :19:01.resort, the lone gunman on the beach armed with an automatic weapons and

:19:02. > :19:07.explosives, and also roaming around inside the hotel, looking for his

:19:08. > :19:12.next victims. The British police team put together this map of his

:19:13. > :19:16.movements. The red arrow indicates where he started shooting near the

:19:17. > :19:21.sun lounges, before moving to the terrace and outdoor pool area and

:19:22. > :19:26.into the hotel. He killed everywhere he went. There were no clear signs

:19:27. > :19:31.of police or security guards tried to stop him. The council to the

:19:32. > :19:36.inquest referred to a statement from a Tunisian witness. She told the

:19:37. > :19:40.court, he said the security units that should have intervened in the

:19:41. > :19:46.event deliberately and unjustifiably slowed down to delay their arrival

:19:47. > :19:50.at the hotel. They had the ability to put an end to the attack before

:19:51. > :19:55.the police arrived, but wasted a considerable amount of time in

:19:56. > :20:00.getting to the hotel. These inquests cannot lay blame, but they can offer

:20:01. > :20:04.guidance. The family is here just want to know how their loved ones

:20:05. > :20:14.came to die in such a horrifying way.

:20:15. > :20:22.We are alive in the BBC newsroom, our lead story is that German and

:20:23. > :20:26.French leaders have responded strongly against comments that

:20:27. > :20:31.Donald Trump has made praising Brexit. He said the European Union

:20:32. > :20:38.is a vehicle for Germany and other countries may follow the UK out of

:20:39. > :20:44.it. It is Martin Luther King Jr. Day in

:20:45. > :20:48.the US when the civil rights struggles of the 1960s are

:20:49. > :20:53.remembered. In the final week of the United States' first black

:20:54. > :20:56.president, how much leeway as Barack Obama made?

:20:57. > :21:04.There were civil rights battle ground of course across this

:21:05. > :21:09.country, but few as lethal as those in this state. In one of his last

:21:10. > :21:13.acts as president, Barack Obama has designated certain sites here in

:21:14. > :21:17.Alabama important in the civil rights movement as national

:21:18. > :21:21.monuments and they include this motel which was used as a

:21:22. > :21:26.headquarters for some time by Martin Luther King. Around the corner

:21:27. > :21:31.stands a church that was bombed by white supremacists in one of the

:21:32. > :21:36.pivotal moments. President Obama has now made this a national monument as

:21:37. > :21:42.well, in honour of the four young girls who were killed. 11-year-old

:21:43. > :21:47.Denise McNair was one of those who died in the bombing, an event that

:21:48. > :21:52.sparked national outrage. A church is supposed to be your sanctuary, so

:21:53. > :21:58.for that to happen in a church, I think those who may have been on the

:21:59. > :22:02.side of segregation had to take a second look. During his presidency,

:22:03. > :22:08.Barack Obama paid tribute to the historical events that helped pave

:22:09. > :22:14.his own way to the White House. He concluded by inviting the McNair

:22:15. > :22:18.family to Washington. I gave him a big bear hug when I walked into the

:22:19. > :22:24.room and then he hugged me later on before leaving. But it is for other

:22:25. > :22:29.reasons that they feel strongly he has lifted up other African

:22:30. > :22:35.Americans for so years. So long the perception that black was bad. Black

:22:36. > :22:39.people are not smart enough or kind enough and he dispelled the myth of

:22:40. > :22:44.all of that. He is highly educated, he is kind and respectful, there

:22:45. > :22:50.could not have been a better first black American president. Of course,

:22:51. > :22:54.many others here have been counting down the days until Barack Obama

:22:55. > :23:00.leaves office and Donald Trump takes over. I believe Barack Obama is the

:23:01. > :23:08.most divisive president in well over a generation. Why? I believe he

:23:09. > :23:15.played the race issue. Man should not be judged by the colour of their

:23:16. > :23:18.king, but of the content of their character and Barack Obama reminded

:23:19. > :23:21.people of the colour of their skin and forced it to be a racial issue

:23:22. > :23:28.and that was negative for our country. Bryan Stevenson is one of

:23:29. > :23:34.the most prominent civil rights lawyers in America today and he is

:23:35. > :23:38.perplexed by that sentiment. I think he tried really hard to counter the

:23:39. > :23:42.idea that he was there just for people of colour and his policies

:23:43. > :23:46.reinforced that. I do not believe you can point to many things that he

:23:47. > :23:53.did that would be, quote, racially divisive. We had moments in this

:23:54. > :23:57.country, police shootings being dramatic, that were polarising to

:23:58. > :24:04.people, but I cannot find much that he did that any other Democrat would

:24:05. > :24:09.have done. Many of us think he encountered hostility and obstacles

:24:10. > :24:13.and challenges that he might not have intended. Many others feel

:24:14. > :24:19.Barack Obama was not given a chance by some simply because he was black.

:24:20. > :24:25.For a lot of African Americans it is important that race is constantly

:24:26. > :24:32.being brought up in this country. In spite of the inspiration President

:24:33. > :24:39.Obama may have provided, and it seems practical inequalities remain.
