:00:07. > :00:08.Hello, I'm Ros Atkins, this is Outside Source.

:00:09. > :00:11.Donald Trump and Benjamin Netanyahu have just held a press conference

:00:12. > :00:15.at the White House - and both have acknowledged

:00:16. > :00:20.that the two state solution may not be the only route to peace.

:00:21. > :00:29.I've thought for a while the two State looks like it may be the

:00:30. > :00:34.easier of the two, but honestly, if the Palestinians, Israel and the

:00:35. > :00:37.Palestinians are happy, I'm like the one they like the best. -- I'm happy

:00:38. > :00:38.with the one they like the best. We'll be live in Washington

:00:39. > :00:41.to talk about that. And to report on the continuing

:00:42. > :00:43.fall-out of over. Mchael Flynn's resignation

:00:44. > :00:45.as National Security adviser. There's are renewed calls

:00:46. > :00:47.for an investigation into possible connections between Mr Trump's

:00:48. > :00:48.team and Russia. For his part the President

:00:49. > :00:51.has launched a scathing In Malaysia, a woman's been arrested

:00:52. > :00:57.in connection with the killing We've a report from

:00:58. > :01:07.the scene of the murder. Police say that he was accosted by

:01:08. > :01:12.at least one woman who covered his face with a cloth. If your head is

:01:13. > :01:19.spinning from all the developments with the Tramp administration, we go

:01:20. > :01:23.live to Washington in both halves of the programme. If you have questions

:01:24. > :01:24.about what's happening I'm pretty sure one or both of them will be

:01:25. > :01:43.able to answer. For many years America has supported

:01:44. > :01:50.a two state solution in the Middle East. Today that changed. I thought

:01:51. > :01:57.for a while the two state looks like it may be the easy of the two, but

:01:58. > :02:00.honestly, if Bibi and the Palestinians, Israel and the

:02:01. > :02:04.Palestinians are happy, I'm happy with the one they like the best, as

:02:05. > :02:09.far as the embassy moving to Jerusalem, I'd love to see that

:02:10. > :02:15.happen. We're looking at it very, very strongly, we're looking at it

:02:16. > :02:21.with great care believe me. And we'll see what happens, OK? There

:02:22. > :02:27.are two prerequisites for peace that I laid out to you several years ago.

:02:28. > :02:30.And they haven't changed. First, the Palestinians must recognise the

:02:31. > :02:36.Jewish state. They have to stop calling for Israel's destruction.

:02:37. > :02:41.They have to stop educating their people for Israel's destruction.

:02:42. > :02:45.Second in any peace deal, Israel must retain the overriding security

:02:46. > :02:51.control over the entire area west of the Jordan river because if we don't

:02:52. > :02:56.we know what will happen. Because otherwise we'll get another radical

:02:57. > :03:02.Islamic terrorist state in the Palestinian areas exploding the

:03:03. > :03:06.peace, exploding the Middle East. Anthony, it was unlike anything we

:03:07. > :03:12.saw between President Obama and Benjamin Netanyahu. How did you read

:03:13. > :03:16.this? That's exactly it, no secret Benjamin Netanyahu and Barack Obama

:03:17. > :03:20.didn't get along, they didn't work well together, I recall a few years

:03:21. > :03:26.ago Netanyahu having an address to the US Congress without Obama

:03:27. > :03:29.meeting with him. They disagreed on Middle East peace efforts, Barack

:03:30. > :03:35.Obama obviously pushed a two state solution, a principal part of their

:03:36. > :03:38.negotiations. Many in the Obama Administration felt Netanyahu and

:03:39. > :03:44.the Israeli government was not cooperating and working in earnest

:03:45. > :03:48.to try to reach an agreement. This is an entirely different sort of

:03:49. > :03:52.relationship. You heard them both almost speaking from the same script

:03:53. > :03:55.talking about radical Islamic terrorism and how they needed a

:03:56. > :04:00.common front to defeat it, something you never would have heard out of

:04:01. > :04:04.Barack Obama's mouth. Both men gave statements then invited questions.

:04:05. > :04:08.He is one detail you may be interested in. Mr Trump has called

:04:09. > :04:12.on only Conservative outlets in his last three joint press conferences.

:04:13. > :04:16.There is a radio station called town hall which is conservative. We had

:04:17. > :04:20.from the Christian broadcasting network. There was one question

:04:21. > :04:27.asking whether Mr Trump and his Administration is playing with

:04:28. > :04:36.anti-Semitic and racist tones? Here is the answer of the president. As

:04:37. > :04:42.far as people, Jewish people, so many friends. A daughter who happens

:04:43. > :04:50.to be here right now. A son-in-law. And three beautiful grandchildren. I

:04:51. > :04:55.think that you are going to see a lots different United States of

:04:56. > :04:59.America over the next 3-4, or eight years. I think a lot of good things

:05:00. > :05:03.are happening. You are going to see a lots of love, you're going to see

:05:04. > :05:10.a lot of love. I've known the president and I've know his family

:05:11. > :05:15.and his name for a long time. And there is no greater supporter of the

:05:16. > :05:19.Jewish people and the Jewish state than President Donald Trump. I think

:05:20. > :05:23.we should put that to rest. A couple of things to pick up on the issue of

:05:24. > :05:27.unifying the nation which Mr Trump said he was going to do with a lot

:05:28. > :05:31.of love, bear in mind just today he has attacked or criticised CNN,

:05:32. > :05:36.Hillary Clinton, the New York Times, the Washington Post, the so-called

:05:37. > :05:40.fake media in general, the FBI and the National Security agency. On

:05:41. > :05:44.this issue of anti-Semitism, let's bring company backing from

:05:45. > :05:48.Washington. This repeatedly comes up but do we have any evidence there

:05:49. > :05:54.has been a rise in anti-Semitic activity, and that we can connect it

:05:55. > :05:58.in to Mr Trump? I think people point out things like a series of bomb

:05:59. > :06:01.threats made against Jewish community centres here in the US.

:06:02. > :06:07.Incidents of people painting swastikas on various public

:06:08. > :06:14.buildings. It's all anecdotal. I think when people get upset, when

:06:15. > :06:16.critics go after Donald Trump for connections to anti-Semitism, they

:06:17. > :06:22.look at some of the supporters from the ultra-right, white nationalists,

:06:23. > :06:26.who have been very ardent Donald Trump backers, particularly online,

:06:27. > :06:34.using anti-Semitic language to Jewish journalists. You also see

:06:35. > :06:38.Donald Trump's rhetoric. He retweeted an image of a star of

:06:39. > :06:43.David on a background of dollar bills to attack Hillary Clinton

:06:44. > :06:48.answered Hillary Clinton was in with an international cabal of bankers.

:06:49. > :06:53.The kind of language people say, the anti-defamation league would say,

:06:54. > :06:58.was used in Nazi Germany. This global conspiracy of Jewish bankers.

:06:59. > :07:06.Thank you for the moment, we appreciate it. We can speak to any

:07:07. > :07:11.of our colleagues working on the most important stories of the day.

:07:12. > :07:15.Earlier I asked Jeremy Bowen to come by, the BBC Middle East editor. He

:07:16. > :07:20.was watching the press conference, too. This is what he made of it.

:07:21. > :07:24.What Mr Netanyahu has been written forward to... He had a number of

:07:25. > :07:30.visits to Washington during the Obama years and they were always

:07:31. > :07:34.frosty, the men never got on. No doubt personal issues, but also

:07:35. > :07:38.because of policy things. President Obama never approved of Mr

:07:39. > :07:46.Netanyahu's policies of encouraging settlement growth and a hard line

:07:47. > :07:50.towards the Palestinians. Mr Trump did say, you might have to ease back

:07:51. > :07:54.on the settlements of it. I don't think Mr Netanyahu or the Israeli

:07:55. > :07:58.right will enjoy hearing that, because initially they thought they

:07:59. > :08:01.would get a blank cheque from President Trump. In the first days

:08:02. > :08:07.after his inauguration, the authorised, with the Netanyahu, six

:08:08. > :08:13.and a half thousand units in the occupied territories. And the first

:08:14. > :08:18.all-new settlement in a generation. Even the White House said to him,

:08:19. > :08:22.calm down a bit, and that is what Trump was saying today. What they

:08:23. > :08:28.were both hinting that was some kind of wider agreement involving Arab

:08:29. > :08:32.countries. Who share their suspicions of Iran. That was the

:08:33. > :08:36.other big theme in the news conference. On the moors Israel and

:08:37. > :08:40.Palestinians, the other was Iran. Mr Trump said it could be a two state

:08:41. > :08:44.solution, but might be one state, which has left a few viewers

:08:45. > :08:50.thinking what does a one state solution look like? The two state

:08:51. > :08:53.solution is an independent Palestine alongside Israel, self-determination

:08:54. > :08:57.independent of the Palestinians, peace down that path. It's very

:08:58. > :09:01.fashionable on the Israeli right, the part of politics Netanyahu

:09:02. > :09:04.belongs to in Israel, to say the idea is played out. There should be

:09:05. > :09:09.new thinking. The thing about a one state solution, between the River

:09:10. > :09:14.Jordan and Mediterranean, one state containing Israel and its Arab

:09:15. > :09:20.population, 20% of the total, and all the Palestinians. If you did all

:09:21. > :09:28.of that, the problem from Israel's point of view is there would be a

:09:29. > :09:33.majority of Arabs over Israeli dues. If not the second in a generation

:09:34. > :09:37.certainly. It's something they would like because if they gave the vote

:09:38. > :09:40.to all those Palestinians they take control of government. The

:09:41. > :09:45.alternative to that would be one state where all the adults don't

:09:46. > :09:52.have equal rights, and that of course equals apartheid. Another

:09:53. > :09:54.important element of the story of the Trump administration, Donald

:09:55. > :10:09.Trump it Twitter pretty hard earlier, sending a number of tweets.

:10:10. > :10:14.The present of America comparing his own intelligence operations with

:10:15. > :10:19.Russia unfavourably. He also compared them with Nazi Germany,

:10:20. > :10:22.let's hope they have thick skin. The Washington Post got mentioned

:10:23. > :10:26.because it was its reporting central to the pressure that led to the

:10:27. > :10:30.resignation of Mr Trump's National Security adviser Michael Flynn who

:10:31. > :10:36.we talked about a lot. The president isn't at all happy with what's

:10:37. > :10:40.happened to general Flynn. Michael Flynn, general Flynn, is a wonderful

:10:41. > :10:48.man. He's been treated very very unfairly by the media. As I call it,

:10:49. > :10:52.the fake media, in many cases. And I think it's really a sad thing that

:10:53. > :10:58.he was treated so badly. I think, in addition to that, from

:10:59. > :11:02.intelligence... Papers are being leaked, things are being leaked...

:11:03. > :11:08.Its criminal action, criminal act. And it's been going on for a long

:11:09. > :11:13.time. Before me. But now it's really going on. Bear in mind Mr Trump's

:11:14. > :11:16.own press secretary told us the president had asked for general

:11:17. > :11:20.Flynn's resignation and had done so because of an erosion of trust

:11:21. > :11:25.between the president and general Flynn. That was yesterday, now today

:11:26. > :11:28.the president is blaming the fake media for something his press

:11:29. > :11:34.secretary says he chose to do. Donald Trump is also upset with the

:11:35. > :11:41.New York Times, partly because of this story, headlined Trump campaign

:11:42. > :11:43.aides had repeated contacts with Russian intelligence. Moscow has

:11:44. > :11:48.been quick to say there is a truth in the story. Mr Trump two to

:11:49. > :11:51.Twitter to say, this Russian connection nonsense is an attempted

:11:52. > :11:57.cover-up the many mistakes made in Hillary Clinton's losing campaign. I

:11:58. > :12:02.can think of a view things that motivated the press in the story.

:12:03. > :12:07.Let's bring in the BBC's Anthony Zucker. It's getting close up and

:12:08. > :12:12.passionate, where have we got to with this? I think the heat is

:12:13. > :12:18.definitely turning up in the White House. They are giving mixed

:12:19. > :12:22.messages. Sean Spicer said yesterday the reason Donald Trump didn't want

:12:23. > :12:27.Flynn around was that he lost confidence in him. Today we saw him

:12:28. > :12:33.praising general Flynn. At the heart of this, as you alluded to, possible

:12:34. > :12:36.ties between Donald Trump, people around Donald Trump, and the Russian

:12:37. > :12:43.government. And so when you had general Flynn kind of downplaying

:12:44. > :12:46.the conversation at the end of December, saying they didn't talk

:12:47. > :12:50.about sanctions, he could have said, we talked about a whole bunch of

:12:51. > :12:53.issues. Because there was a spotlight on Trump and his people's

:12:54. > :12:58.relationship with Russia, going all the way back to early in the

:12:59. > :13:02.campaign, it gives this area of them trying to make sure people don't

:13:03. > :13:06.focus a spotlight on that again, that they don't reenergise these

:13:07. > :13:10.enquiries about what's going on with the Donald Trump's connections to

:13:11. > :13:14.Russia. The cat Donald Trump and what he has said over the past year

:13:15. > :13:18.or two about Russia, praising Vladimir Putin, saying he is a

:13:19. > :13:22.stronger leader than Barack Obama. There are a lot of data points here,

:13:23. > :13:25.now you'll hear more and more Democrats in particular, some

:13:26. > :13:30.Republicans in Congress, saying they need to look into this to find out

:13:31. > :13:34.exactly what's going on. A lot of smoke. What the reality is, the

:13:35. > :13:36.reality of those connections, is going to be something I think the

:13:37. > :13:41.administration will have to deal with. Even now Flynn has been shown

:13:42. > :13:45.the door. Another twist to talk about, let's bring up some of the

:13:46. > :13:50.news wires coming in through the outside source screen. This is from

:13:51. > :13:55.the Reuters news agency telling us Andrew Puzder formally withdraws his

:13:56. > :14:01.nomination as Labour department secretary. Talk us through this, how

:14:02. > :14:05.significant is that? Donald Trump is going to lose someone he wanted to

:14:06. > :14:10.put in the Cabinet. A pretty big blow to an administration. It's not

:14:11. > :14:14.unheard of. Past presidents, Barack Obama and George W Bush included,

:14:15. > :14:19.have had to withdraw nominees they put up for Cabinet spots. None of

:14:20. > :14:28.them were in the sort of defensive pouch the Trump administration has

:14:29. > :14:31.been in. He was strongly opposed to buy democratic labour forces,

:14:32. > :14:36.Pusder, because he was against raising the minimum wage. He made

:14:37. > :14:39.questionable comments about minorities immigrants and women in

:14:40. > :14:51.the workplace. There were reports he failed to pay taxes on somebody

:14:52. > :14:54.employed. A tape showed up of his ex-wife making allegations of

:14:55. > :14:58.spousal abuse during divorce proceedings. There was a lot going

:14:59. > :15:02.on with Andrew Puzder and Republicans in Congress were backing

:15:03. > :15:06.away thinking it wasn't a fight they wanted to have. The Trump

:15:07. > :15:10.administration eventually concurred the last thing they need is a

:15:11. > :15:16.bruising confirmation for somebody like a Labor Secretary that's not

:15:17. > :15:20.essential to his vision, his agenda going forward. There is supposed to

:15:21. > :15:24.be a hearing tomorrow so that pushed the issue. They didn't want to go

:15:25. > :15:30.through the hearing with all the allegations floating around. We have

:15:31. > :15:34.a nominee for the Cabinet withdrawing, Donald Trump leaving

:15:35. > :15:38.behind years of US policy saying he's open to a one state solution

:15:39. > :15:44.with regards to the Middle East peace process. Ongoing allegations

:15:45. > :15:48.there was contact between Donald Trump's campaign during the

:15:49. > :15:52.presidential campaign and Russia. With regards to that specific New

:15:53. > :16:00.York Times story, Donald Trump has repeatedly dismissed it. We have a

:16:01. > :16:08.quote from the Kremlin spokesperson saying...

:16:09. > :16:13.The Russian media is also unimpressed with the circumstances

:16:14. > :16:19.around the resignation of Mr Trump's national security adviser who we've

:16:20. > :16:22.just been discussing. The BBC's correspondent Steve Rosenberg has

:16:23. > :16:25.been looking at the Russian papers. Here's his review of them.

:16:26. > :16:31.The first loss in Trump's team, that is the headline in the Russian

:16:32. > :16:36.government paper, which declares opponents of the US president are

:16:37. > :16:40.using Flynn's resignation for a new wave of hysteria against Russia. The

:16:41. > :16:43.paper goes on to say the sudden and scandalous resignation of a key

:16:44. > :16:48.adviser cast a shadow on the president himself and without doubt

:16:49. > :16:55.will be used by his opponents to crank up anti-Russian hysteria for

:16:56. > :16:59.an internal political battle. Today's paper blames US intelligence

:17:00. > :17:03.saying according to one version of events the contents of Michaelson's

:17:04. > :17:07.conversation with the Russian ambassador were leaked by US

:17:08. > :17:10.intelligence. They are not shy of listening telephone conversations of

:17:11. > :17:16.White House staff and Russian diplomats in USA, they say. Another

:17:17. > :17:20.paper describes Michael Flynn's downfall in these terms. Trump has

:17:21. > :17:26.had his right hand cut off. The writer goes on to say that an

:17:27. > :17:29.unambiguous signal has been sent to all former, current and future

:17:30. > :17:37.American officials that attempts to fix relations with Russia are fatal

:17:38. > :17:41.for your career. Inside he goes say this... The resignation of a major

:17:42. > :17:44.foreign policy official for doing his duties, for talking to the

:17:45. > :17:50.Russian ambassador, is something in the style of Stalin. He concludes

:17:51. > :17:56.with this, if Flynn, before taking office, had held negotiations with

:17:57. > :17:59.the British, Japanese, even Chinese ambassadors, it probably wouldn't

:18:00. > :18:03.have led to a scandal. Steve Rosenberg. After those

:18:04. > :18:10.he has those round-ups all the time on his Twitter account. Donald

:18:11. > :18:14.Trump's presidency is throwing up a lot of unprecedented situations.

:18:15. > :18:17.Katty Kay will be live with us from Washington in 15 minutes. If you

:18:18. > :18:24.have questions for her, you can find us on social media.

:18:25. > :18:30.The ruling body of the Church of England rulings in one has voted

:18:31. > :18:33.against a report on the issue of same-sex marriage. The report from

:18:34. > :18:37.senior bishops called on the church to welcome and support gay people

:18:38. > :18:43.but concluded marriage in church should only be between a man and a

:18:44. > :18:44.woman. While religious affairs correspondent Martin Bashir has

:18:45. > :19:08.more. They said married in church should

:19:09. > :19:14.remain a lifelong union between a man and a woman. That was turned

:19:15. > :19:15.over by the house of clergy, who decided that was insufficiently

:19:16. > :19:39.inclusive. I'm Ros Atkins with Outside Source.

:19:40. > :19:41.The lead story is Israel's Prime Minister has met Donald Trump at the

:19:42. > :19:46.White House. At a joint press conference

:19:47. > :19:48.the President made it clear that the two state solution may not

:19:49. > :19:52.be the only route to peace. BBC Mundo reports that

:19:53. > :19:53.Venezuela's President, Nicolas Maduro, has demanded the US

:19:54. > :19:55.apologise and withdraw sanctions The US accuses Tareck El Aissami

:19:56. > :20:08.of drugs trafficking - for his part the Vice Present says

:20:09. > :20:10.the claims are The United Nations has warned

:20:11. > :20:13.of a serious escalation An official said that since January

:20:14. > :20:17.the distance between government and rebel forces has narrowed

:20:18. > :20:19.to a few hundred metres, and that in some places

:20:20. > :20:34.they are almost face to face. That is from BBC Ukrainian. Here is

:20:35. > :20:37.another element of how Donald Trump's Administration is impacting

:20:38. > :20:41.on America and the rest of the world. Let's look at America's

:20:42. > :20:45.position in Nato. In the past Mr Trump has called it obsolete. He's

:20:46. > :20:55.also said a lot of these countries are paying what they are supposed to

:20:56. > :21:00.be. -- are not paying. He has also said, Nato is very important to me.

:21:01. > :21:06.Difficult to work out his precise position. This is Mr Trump's gripe.

:21:07. > :21:10.The huge area marked in blue represents the proportion of Nato's

:21:11. > :21:15.budget that the US picks up. Despite the fact it picks up more than any

:21:16. > :21:19.other country, some Nato members are not meeting their agreed commitments

:21:20. > :21:25.to the budget. The new US Defence Secretary James Mattis has had his

:21:26. > :21:29.first meeting with Nato defence ministers in Brussels. He picked up

:21:30. > :21:35.on just the issues the president has been mentioning. It's absolutely

:21:36. > :21:39.appropriate as a European minister of defence said last week, it's a

:21:40. > :21:45.fair demand that all who benefit from the best defence in the world

:21:46. > :21:48.carry their proportionate share of the necessary cost to defend freedom

:21:49. > :21:55.and we should never forget that ultimately it is freedom that we

:21:56. > :21:55.defend here at Nato. We understand a behind closed doors meeting

:21:56. > :22:13.secretary Matias said... I.e., show us the money. The BBC's

:22:14. > :22:19.Jonathan Marcus is at Nato in Brussels. I asked for his assessment

:22:20. > :22:24.of how it has gone. A very interesting day here at Nato.

:22:25. > :22:30.General matters is a Nato old-timer, former military commander in the

:22:31. > :22:37.alliance. He described the building behind me as his second home. He's

:22:38. > :22:42.been around these corridors for years, he's heard all the efforts by

:22:43. > :22:47.previous US Defence Secretary is to get Nato's European allies to spend

:22:48. > :22:52.more. He's heard all the excuses, the commitments made and broken. And

:22:53. > :22:56.now the Trump administration is in office, he wants things to change.

:22:57. > :23:00.He made it clear it's not going to be business as usual. He gave

:23:01. > :23:06.assurance the Trump administration is foursquare behind Nato. It is a

:23:07. > :23:11.contingent, conditional commitment to Nato. It rests upon Nato's

:23:12. > :23:17.European allies reaching deeper into their pockets to pay for a greater

:23:18. > :23:21.share of their own defence. Given those European allies have made

:23:22. > :23:27.commitments, what is their defence for not meeting them? They don't

:23:28. > :23:32.have much of a defence, this is the problem. A few years ago at a summit

:23:33. > :23:37.in Wales, Nato countries agreed they would spend 2% of their gross

:23:38. > :23:43.domestic product, the GDP, on defence. Only five countries

:23:44. > :23:48.including the United States met that commitment. But everybody entered

:23:49. > :23:53.into willingly. It was a consensus otherwise it would have not been

:23:54. > :23:57.passed. You can understand the American frustration. The mamma

:23:58. > :24:02.administration was just as frustrated as the Trump

:24:03. > :24:05.administration is. -- the Obama Administration was just as

:24:06. > :24:08.frustrated. The Trump administration clearly intends to make Nato's

:24:09. > :24:13.European allies pay more of their fair share. Time for outside source

:24:14. > :24:17.business concentrating on Greece. This man on the right is the EU

:24:18. > :24:21.Finance commissioner who has been in Athens meeting the Greek Prime

:24:22. > :24:27.Minister. The Greek economy is still in deep trouble. It matters because

:24:28. > :24:29.there are economic and political consequences for Europe, in

:24:30. > :24:35.particular those countries which use the euro, if it were to default on

:24:36. > :24:40.its debt. Chris received a bailout worth 86 billion euros in 2015. The

:24:41. > :24:45.next debt payment some 7 billion euros is due in July. The Greeks

:24:46. > :24:49.can't afford to pay unless it accesses more funds from the

:24:50. > :24:54.bailout. It's not going to happen unless Greece's creditors including

:24:55. > :24:59.the IMF and EU, get more austerity reforms in return. The argument of

:25:00. > :25:04.the Greek Prime Minister is it is reasonable. The Greek economy hasn't

:25:05. > :25:13.grown very much and his people have been through enough. These results

:25:14. > :25:18.are due to the crisis of the Greek people. Everybody has to recognise

:25:19. > :25:25.the figures and to respect the sacrifices of the Greek people. So

:25:26. > :25:37.the message is enough with austerity in Greece. It could be destructive

:25:38. > :25:43.to discuss it even for one year or more, the basis of these results.

:25:44. > :25:46.We're going to take a brief break before coming back for the second

:25:47. > :25:50.half. Less than four beats into Donald Trump's presidency and my

:25:51. > :25:54.goodness there has been an awful lot to discuss. We've got Katty Kay with

:25:55. > :25:57.us for a good ten or 15 minutes after the break, any questions you

:25:58. > :26:00.got with what's happening in Washington and how it impacts on

:26:01. > :26:05.everyone around the world, let me know.

:26:06. > :26:12.We're going to take a look at what's going on with the weather around the

:26:13. > :26:16.world. First we're off to Africa. Out in the Mozambique Channel over

:26:17. > :26:17.the last few days we've been watching this storm system
