:00:00. > :00:00.Fox News, FBI Director Comey did the right thing when he found new

:00:00. > :00:00.evidence. He had no choice but to report it to the American Congress

:00:00. > :00:13.where he had testified. The investigation was over... STUDIO: We

:00:14. > :00:17.are pulling away from this live feed where the US Attorney General Jeff

:00:18. > :00:21.Sessions has spent over two hours answering questions from senators

:00:22. > :00:27.representing the Republicans and the Democrats. This is all to do with

:00:28. > :00:30.the Senate intelligence committee's investigation into those allegations

:00:31. > :00:35.that Russia interfered with the US election. Let's bring in with our

:00:36. > :00:40.reporter live from Capitol Hill. I'm sure Donald Trump was watching most

:00:41. > :00:46.of that if not all and he would have been delighted with how that went. I

:00:47. > :00:50.think so. What we didn't get where any new explosive revelations, and

:00:51. > :00:55.we certainly didn't get into the James Comey said this, I'm going to

:00:56. > :00:58.contradict him because this is what actually happened. On the whole it

:00:59. > :01:05.covered a lot of old ground, nothing really new was revealed, it also

:01:06. > :01:11.gave Jeff Sessions a chance to defend his honour and his integrity.

:01:12. > :01:15.He opened with his statement all guns blazing, saying that he found

:01:16. > :01:19.any allegations that he colluded with Russia to hurt this country

:01:20. > :01:25.appalling and detestable lies. He said while he may have recused

:01:26. > :01:29.himself from the various investigations into Russian

:01:30. > :01:34.meddling, he had not recused himself from defending his honour. He really

:01:35. > :01:39.went into it very much a wronged man. Essentially he managed to

:01:40. > :01:43.maintain that stance throughout his entire testimony. He opted out of

:01:44. > :01:47.answering quite a few questions, either because he couldn't remember

:01:48. > :01:51.or because he said it wasn't appropriate. That seemed to cause

:01:52. > :01:55.disquiet among the Democrats. Yes, the Democrats are very unhappy about

:01:56. > :01:58.that because that's what they want to know. They want to know what the

:01:59. > :02:02.president said about various things, they want to get an idea of any

:02:03. > :02:09.material they might be able to use against him. This is, to a certain

:02:10. > :02:14.extent, politically motivated. There is a very serious ongoing

:02:15. > :02:19.investigation into the extent of Russian interference into the

:02:20. > :02:23.presidential election, and both parties, Democrats and Republicans,

:02:24. > :02:27.support that investigation. There is a definite sense among Democrats

:02:28. > :02:31.that they might find something on Donald Trump that could lead to his

:02:32. > :02:35.impeachment. When we heard Jeff Sessions saying I'm sorry but I'm

:02:36. > :02:39.not going to tell you what the president said, that is private and

:02:40. > :02:42.not appropriate, of course they aren't pleased. Interestingly he

:02:43. > :02:47.didn't cite executive privilege because he said that up to the

:02:48. > :02:50.president. As far as he's concerned those conversations are confidential

:02:51. > :02:58.and shouldn't be revealed in a public hearing. Explain to us where

:02:59. > :03:02.committee goes from here, please. Having heard Jeff Sessions

:03:03. > :03:06.testimony, and don't forget he is the highest ranking Trump

:03:07. > :03:09.administration official we've heard from so far, they've got to get on

:03:10. > :03:13.with the job of what they are supposed to be doing which is

:03:14. > :03:20.investigating Russian meddling in the election. Thank you. Jane

:03:21. > :03:25.O'Brien live from Washington, DC. If you're coming to that live feed from

:03:26. > :03:32.the Senate intelligence committee late, you can watch back clips from

:03:33. > :03:36.what Jeff Sessions has been saying on the BBC News app and on the BBC

:03:37. > :03:45.News website. I can be reasonably certain that Anthony is sitting in

:03:46. > :03:48.the Washington, DC News from writing up some analysis of where this

:03:49. > :03:52.testimony fits into the numerous pressures on the Trump

:03:53. > :03:55.administration as well. You'll also get extensive analysis of what we've

:03:56. > :04:01.heard from Jeff Sessions both here on the BBC News Channel in the UK

:04:02. > :04:05.and on BBC and world news. Thank you for watching, we'll be back tomorrow

:04:06. > :04:12.at the same time. Goodbye.
