:00:00. > :00:00.injured. And reports across the Spanish media of one attacker being

:00:00. > :00:00.killed in a shoot out with police. Continuing coverage here on BBC

:00:00. > :00:17.News. Hello, I'm Philippa Thomas and you

:00:18. > :00:22.are watching Outside Source. Terror on the streets of Barcelona is a van

:00:23. > :00:25.ploughs into a crowd in the popular tourist area of Las Ramblas. The

:00:26. > :00:32.Catalan government says 13 people are dead. The police shouted at

:00:33. > :00:37.everyone just to run. There was a really loud kind of crashing noise.

:00:38. > :00:42.I mean, I didn't stop to look back. It was just an immediate stampede in

:00:43. > :00:45.the opposite direction. Catalan police confirmed they are treating

:00:46. > :00:50.it as a terror attack. Within the last hour, they have made an arrest.

:00:51. > :00:51.They dismissed earlier reports that two gunmen were holed up in a bar in

:00:52. > :01:11.a city. -- in the city. Welcome to Outside Source, where we

:01:12. > :01:15.are continuing the BBC's live coverage of the terror attack in

:01:16. > :01:20.Spain, where a van has driven into crowds, killing at least 13 people.

:01:21. > :01:24.Let's recap what we know. This happened in Barcelona in the

:01:25. > :01:28.north-east of Spain. In fact, if I take you closer into the city, you

:01:29. > :01:33.can see that we have highlighted exactly where the attack occurred.

:01:34. > :01:37.Las Ramblas is the city's famous tourist hotspot area. A white van

:01:38. > :01:41.mounted the pavement and drove into pedestrians. 13 people have been

:01:42. > :01:45.killed and more than 50 others have been injured. According to police,

:01:46. > :01:50.the van entered the famous street from the north side. Let's see if I

:01:51. > :01:54.can bring this up for you. It came in on the north side of Las Ramblas.

:01:55. > :01:59.And it went at some speed down the strip, coming to a halt about

:02:00. > :02:04.halfway down. To give you an idea of just how busy this area usually is,

:02:05. > :02:07.we have a photo from yesterday showing it is packed, it is

:02:08. > :02:11.extremely popular with tourists. Police confirmed on Twitter they

:02:12. > :02:15.have arrested one person. Despite reports about this, they say there

:02:16. > :02:23.is no continuing hostage situation. Police have also of a man, Driss

:02:24. > :02:29.Oukabir. We understand this is the man who rented the van involved in

:02:30. > :02:33.the incident. Police posting this tweet to say what is obvious to us

:02:34. > :02:39.all now, this is being treated as a terror attack. Jama Anwar was in

:02:40. > :02:44.Barcelona. He witnessed the attack and spoke to the BBC as the story

:02:45. > :02:48.unfolded. Las Ramblas is right in the heart of the city, it is

:02:49. > :02:52.jam-packed with thousands of tourists. I was about to sit down

:02:53. > :02:57.for something to eat. Then I decided to walk down a bit further.

:02:58. > :03:02.Literally seconds later, heard a crashing noise. The whole street, I

:03:03. > :03:05.started hearing screaming. Everybody started to run so I started to run

:03:06. > :03:09.in the direction people were running. Families were screaming,

:03:10. > :03:13.their kids, they were taking them out of prams and started to run.

:03:14. > :03:18.Within seconds, police officers were out. I noticed yesterday when I

:03:19. > :03:25.arrived in the city that, you know, there is a heavy police presence.

:03:26. > :03:33.Guns were out, ambulances, fire engines. You could see at the top of

:03:34. > :03:36.the street, a sort of like vans. I spoke and try to get into a shop

:03:37. > :03:40.because people were panicking. There was a shopkeeper who was speaking

:03:41. > :03:46.and said something about a van. I try to ask him, and he said that a

:03:47. > :03:51.van had driven into the crowd, and six people were very seriously

:03:52. > :03:53.injured. At that point, the ambulances, fire Brigade, police

:03:54. > :03:58.officers were on the scene with machine guns and guns, very quickly.

:03:59. > :04:02.They were very jittery and people were panicking. And then we were

:04:03. > :04:04.pushed back again and then pushed further back. The police are

:04:05. > :04:13.absolutely everywhere at the moment. now via Skype is a reporter from BBC

:04:14. > :04:17.Persian who is in Barcelona. I can see table behind you, you are pretty

:04:18. > :04:23.near the scene. What is the situation right now? About 100m from

:04:24. > :04:28.Placa de Catalunya, which is not really far away from where the

:04:29. > :04:34.attack happened. The crowds were being directed out of this area up

:04:35. > :04:38.until maybe ten minutes ago. It just shows what a massive population was

:04:39. > :04:43.in that area. Because as we know, it is one of the most visited parts of

:04:44. > :04:48.Barcelona. But panic still continues to be the mood. Because a few

:04:49. > :04:52.minutes ago, the crowd suddenly got scared of something, we don't know

:04:53. > :04:56.what. They started running. Behind them were police officers with guns,

:04:57. > :04:59.just right behind me, following, chasing, as if there was somebody in

:05:00. > :05:03.that crowd that they wanted to arrest. And then everybody

:05:04. > :05:09.dissipated. And it wasn't clear where it. Did. But it just gives you

:05:10. > :05:13.a sense of how worried the population is, how word gets out

:05:14. > :05:18.that something is happening. And it might be just a mistake. But it

:05:19. > :05:22.creates panic. There are choppers overhead in the last few others. As

:05:23. > :05:28.you said, right behind here is the centre of where it all happened. And

:05:29. > :05:32.there are images of police with big guns, long guns, going street to

:05:33. > :05:37.street, especially in the old part of Barcelona, which is the other end

:05:38. > :05:41.of La Rambla, and chasing people, making sure that every house, every

:05:42. > :05:46.restaurant, making sure that the person they are chasing is not

:05:47. > :05:49.there. And continuing the search. We now have reports that one person has

:05:50. > :05:54.been arrested and also reports that one have been killed, it is unclear

:05:55. > :05:58.which is the case. Nevertheless, the city of Barcelona, where I was about

:05:59. > :06:01.seven hours ago, exactly the spot the attack happened, it has changed

:06:02. > :06:05.dramatically the past few hours. It is panic and people just waiting to

:06:06. > :06:10.see where it will all wrap up, when it will all wrap up. So that they

:06:11. > :06:14.can go back to normal. Many people cannot reach their it is in the

:06:15. > :06:20.cordoned off area. Many of the hotels are in fact in the area of

:06:21. > :06:24.Las Ramblas, where it all happen. It is affecting many tourists as well,

:06:25. > :06:28.as this is ongoing, both the investigation in the area that has

:06:29. > :06:32.been cordoned off for the crowds to walk onto. As you have been talking

:06:33. > :06:36.I have heard the sirens behind you and seen the blue flashing lights go

:06:37. > :06:41.by. We only have one name so far released by the police, Driss

:06:42. > :06:45.Oukabir. They say he rented the van involved. But just remind us, in the

:06:46. > :06:48.last few hours, a lot of people in the city have been terribly

:06:49. > :06:54.frightened because there were rumours about gun men, about a

:06:55. > :06:58.possible hostage. Many, in fact, many people said that in a

:06:59. > :07:01.restaurant hostage crisis is happening and it's ongoing, they

:07:02. > :07:05.have big guns and there are's of them. None of this turned out to be

:07:06. > :07:10.true. As you can imagine, the situation like this, not just

:07:11. > :07:13.word-of-mouth but obviously on social media, things get out and

:07:14. > :07:19.they are not true. They are on comfort, and it creates more fear.

:07:20. > :07:26.In the population. Add to couple that with the pictures that were

:07:27. > :07:30.released, many have seen them, horrifying images of people on the

:07:31. > :07:33.ground, bleeding, something to be unconscious in the middle of La

:07:34. > :07:40.Rambla, where thousands of people walk by, they know this spot. So

:07:41. > :07:43.that adds to the feeling, the reality that this might be an

:07:44. > :07:47.ongoing situation and it has not ended. There is a possibility of

:07:48. > :07:51.something else happening. Hence this crowd that just ran across the

:07:52. > :07:54.street a few minutes ago. Very much panicked, not knowing why they were

:07:55. > :07:57.running, but they were running because somebody said something and

:07:58. > :08:01.everybody followed. Thank you. I know he will bring us an eyewitness

:08:02. > :08:05.report if there are any further development at the scene. We could

:08:06. > :08:11.hear helicopters above your head. It is clear that security is a is

:08:12. > :08:14.ongoing. Thank you very much. I also want to bring you some of the

:08:15. > :08:20.reaction. The world has been watching this terror attack in

:08:21. > :08:23.Barcelona. For example, another -- a number of tributes from within

:08:24. > :08:26.Barcelona. The football club say they are deeply saddened by the

:08:27. > :08:30.attack on our city, our thoughts with the victims, the family, the

:08:31. > :08:39.people of Barcelona. Gareth Bale of Real Madrid... And then as you go

:08:40. > :08:47.around the world. For example, this just brief from Melania Trump, the

:08:48. > :08:51.first Lady of the United States. The Ellen show, the world of

:08:52. > :08:54.entertainment as well. People all watching, people all feeling for

:08:55. > :09:00.those who were caught up in this, injured, killed, traumatised by what

:09:01. > :09:03.has happened and may still be an folding. We will bring you more

:09:04. > :09:08.reaction and we'll keep in touch with what is happening on the

:09:09. > :09:12.ground. I want to talk to Tom Burridge, our former Spain

:09:13. > :09:15.correspondent. Tom, I know you were actually listening into Spanish

:09:16. > :09:20.radio. There is a press conference starting right now. The head of the

:09:21. > :09:24.Catalan government, Catalunya has a very devolved government with their

:09:25. > :09:29.own police force, Mossos, they are leading this investigation. It has

:09:30. > :09:31.literally. Begun. He said that according to solidarity amongst

:09:32. > :09:37.communities, although there is nothing at this stage to link this

:09:38. > :09:42.terror attack with any Islamist group at the moment, it is far too

:09:43. > :09:46.early to start making that assumption or theory, even. But, you

:09:47. > :09:49.know, you have Muslim groups in Spain coming out quite clearly now

:09:50. > :09:52.via Spanish media and condemning this attack in the strongest

:09:53. > :09:59.possible terms. The Islamic commission of Spain. In a separate

:10:00. > :10:02.incident, this information is coming from a Catalan newspaper, they have

:10:03. > :10:09.got a lot of journalists on the ground, they are telling us about

:10:10. > :10:12.this incident in a place to the west of Barcelona, really out of the

:10:13. > :10:18.city, about three kilometres. They are saying there was a shoot out

:10:19. > :10:21.there. This Spanish newspaper, Catalan newspaper, saying that

:10:22. > :10:24.basically that was linked earlier in the evening, people have been

:10:25. > :10:28.following this story for a while now, there were reports of a police

:10:29. > :10:32.officer being run down by a car. They are saying it was linked to

:10:33. > :10:35.that. The car was followed to this area just outside of Barcelona and

:10:36. > :10:39.there was a shoot out and one suspect has been killed. This was a

:10:40. > :10:43.separate incident? Yes, we need to get across this press conference

:10:44. > :10:49.happening in Barcelona and ascertain what the actual facts about this

:10:50. > :10:55.incident. There is information coming from a different town called

:10:56. > :11:01.Vic, that is in cars -- Barcelona, well outside of Barcelona, a car has

:11:02. > :11:06.been impounded there. The mayor of that town is saying that that, by

:11:07. > :11:10.now at least, that part is linked to the investigation. It might turn out

:11:11. > :11:14.in a few minutes time, later in the evening, that that part has nothing

:11:15. > :11:17.to do with the terror attack in the centre of Barcelona. Viewers need to

:11:18. > :11:22.know that we are watching not only the centre of Barcelona, but the

:11:23. > :11:27.incident on the outskirts and this one in Vickers, a town well outside

:11:28. > :11:30.Barcelona. Just to get us back to the basics, it has been confirmed by

:11:31. > :11:35.the police that they are looking at at least 13 deaths? I have just

:11:36. > :11:39.watched a couple of videos. They are horrific. Coming from a journalist

:11:40. > :11:43.friend in Spain, actually, who is in Barcelona, at least a friend of his

:11:44. > :11:47.has sent him the videos. We know how quickly videos spread around these

:11:48. > :11:54.days. Videos from Las Ramblas. It is just heartbreaking to see. It is

:11:55. > :11:56.quite shocking scenes. You know, it looks like children are among the

:11:57. > :12:00.casualties, for sure. But they are saying the official figure at the

:12:01. > :12:04.moment is 13 dead, that is coming from Mossos, the Catalan police.

:12:05. > :12:08.That they confirmed figure. They are saying 15 people injured, though.

:12:09. > :12:11.There are various figures about how many of those people are seriously

:12:12. > :12:15.injured. More than 80 have been hospitalised, that has just come

:12:16. > :12:18.through. Two people have been arrested as well. I will let you

:12:19. > :12:26.catch up, I know you were listening in Spanish. You were talking about

:12:27. > :12:28.harrowing images coming through. I should explain to our viewers, the

:12:29. > :12:31.police have said they are grateful to much of the media for not sharing

:12:32. > :12:34.some of these images. Because they are of all. That message goes out to

:12:35. > :12:41.the wider public now. They are awful. The -- anybody can find video

:12:42. > :12:50.and share it, this is not just this attack, it was the case in Neath and

:12:51. > :12:54.Paris. The police are saying that they do not want people to share the

:12:55. > :12:58.videos, people have been killed and have life changing injuries. Keep

:12:59. > :13:02.listening and keep us up-to-date. We are working out how many different

:13:03. > :13:07.scenarios there are an folding. If you are just joining us, I want to

:13:08. > :13:11.remind you of our main story. A van has driven into crowds, killing at

:13:12. > :13:16.least 13 people in Barcelona in Spain and injuring 50. Well, we were

:13:17. > :13:17.dust hearing 80. Tom Mark Royal is an American tourist who just arrived

:13:18. > :13:27.when the attack began unfolding. This afternoon I came in on a

:13:28. > :13:32.flight, and I was in a taxi just turning onto Las Ramblas. Maybe just

:13:33. > :13:39.a block and a half from the town. I was just looking at the boulevard,

:13:40. > :13:48.from the back of the taxi. And then I heard this group of people scream

:13:49. > :13:52.at the same time. And you just don't think of this, naturally. And then I

:13:53. > :13:59.looked to my left, and I saw a white van with its front looking like it

:14:00. > :14:03.was broken out. And it was going. At first I thought it must be somebody

:14:04. > :14:07.just working and driving, like a service vehicle. Then I realised he

:14:08. > :14:12.was going entirely too fast. It looked to me as if he was going left

:14:13. > :14:16.to right, hitting people at the little stands. There were people

:14:17. > :14:20.shopping, basically. And all of a sudden people were just screaming

:14:21. > :14:25.and running. My taxi stopped. We knew immediately, you know,

:14:26. > :14:31.naturally what was happening and what was going on at that moment.

:14:32. > :14:36.And we waited for a second. And my taxi driver just started saying, oh,

:14:37. > :14:42.my God, oh, my God. And I was in shock. And then we just turned right

:14:43. > :14:47.around the corner, because I was literally near my hotel. And I ran

:14:48. > :14:50.into the hotel. And then everyone was running into any space, of

:14:51. > :14:56.course, that they could find for safety. And they were coming into

:14:57. > :14:58.the hotel and screaming. Interesting, I turned around and

:14:59. > :15:03.they were starting to run the other way. And that was when the hotel

:15:04. > :15:08.staff put me behind the front desk down on the ground. And that that

:15:09. > :15:16.point I just... It just seemed so real. -- it seemed so real. They got

:15:17. > :15:20.all of us together in a ballroom, just in the interim of the hotel,

:15:21. > :15:23.which to me didn't feel safe at all because there was really no... There

:15:24. > :15:29.was nobody and to protect the room of people. And for better or for

:15:30. > :15:33.worse, I left the room and I said, just give me a room key now. They

:15:34. > :15:37.gave me a key and I came upstairs. I figured I would rather be one person

:15:38. > :15:43.in hundreds of rooms than hundreds of people in one room. And now I'm

:15:44. > :15:47.just... I can see every body across at the other hotel, everybody is

:15:48. > :15:50.just watching out of their window, watching, what now?

:15:51. > :15:55.We are keeping across the story in Barcelona for you. In the last human

:15:56. > :16:00.as we have heard that at least 13 have been killed, 80 hospitalised --

:16:01. > :16:03.in the last humanist. The messages of solidarity coming in from around

:16:04. > :16:10.the world. I want to show you this, which is pretty important, from the

:16:11. > :16:17.man of Barcelona. -- the mayor of Barcelona. A defiant message and a

:16:18. > :16:20.message of gratitude to the reaction that's coming in from around the

:16:21. > :16:25.world. Mariano Rajoy as well, the Spanish Prime Minister. He is saying

:16:26. > :16:31.basically he is going to Barcelona committee is on his way, talking

:16:32. > :16:35.about the maximum coordination to stop the perpetrators and strengthen

:16:36. > :16:41.security and to think, to tend to all of those who have been affected.

:16:42. > :16:44.He is talking about unity as well. I brought you a couple of reactions

:16:45. > :16:45.from Barcelona football club and a Real Madrid player. Manchester

:16:46. > :16:55.United... The world of sport, entertainment,

:16:56. > :17:00.politics, all coming through. A current Barcelona player here.

:17:01. > :17:09.You know, as we were hearing earlier from our correspondent on the

:17:10. > :17:12.ground, there are still security operations going on, still

:17:13. > :17:16.helicopters in the sky, sirens on the streets, people who are very

:17:17. > :17:19.frightened and have been fighting for hours. Not only because of what

:17:20. > :17:23.has happened with the car racing down the street, ploughing into

:17:24. > :17:27.people, injuring and killing so many, but the reports there have

:17:28. > :17:32.been, which the police now say are erroneous. There were reports of a

:17:33. > :17:39.couple of gunmen in a bar, possibly hostagetaking. And this kind of

:17:40. > :17:41.thing meant that many of the people in Barcelona, residents and all of

:17:42. > :17:44.the foreign tourist, were petrified and really didn't know where to go.

:17:45. > :17:47.I want to bring you another eyewitness reaction. One of those

:17:48. > :17:51.who have spoken to the BBC is Shelby Mansell from Bristol in the UK. She

:17:52. > :17:53.was in a market near the scene of the attack, and told us what she was

:17:54. > :18:03.seeing. We were in a market, which is an Las

:18:04. > :18:08.Ramblas. And we were just about to go back onto the main street. But we

:18:09. > :18:15.stopped to look at some cakes in the bakery. And suddenly there was

:18:16. > :18:20.screaming, and hundreds of people just swarmed towards us, screaming

:18:21. > :18:24.and running. Lots of confusion. We ran into the bakery and ran up the

:18:25. > :18:28.stairs to hide. As we looked out the window, people were still running

:18:29. > :18:33.through the market. Hundreds and hundreds of people. Running through

:18:34. > :18:39.the market. Shutters were coming down. Just lots of screaming and

:18:40. > :18:42.running. And then we waited. For a few minutes, and it seemed to calm

:18:43. > :18:46.down. We were told we could go up. So we went out back into the market.

:18:47. > :18:50.And the second wave hit. We were told it wasn't safe and we had to

:18:51. > :18:54.get back inside. The police then swept through the market with guns.

:18:55. > :18:58.From where we were, we could see through the market. There were about

:18:59. > :19:02.seven police officers with guns, surrounding a doorway. And then

:19:03. > :19:07.that's the point where we just sort of head under the table, upstairs in

:19:08. > :19:11.the bakery. And we just waited to hear. The woman said that she had

:19:12. > :19:18.run off Las Ramblas and heard gunshots. Then we were there for

:19:19. > :19:21.about 40 minutes, I think, hiding. And then we were told it was safe to

:19:22. > :19:22.come out, but we must move away from the area.

:19:23. > :19:28.I have come back to the desk where Tom Burridge, our former Spain

:19:29. > :19:31.correspondent, is keeping on top of everything and simultaneously

:19:32. > :19:35.reading the Spanish reports and listening to Spanish radio. Tell us

:19:36. > :19:39.where we are at? We have just had a press conference at Catalonia's

:19:40. > :19:44.regional government, significant devolved powers to that government.

:19:45. > :19:47.They are saying 90 victims but 50 injured. I guess that is people

:19:48. > :19:53.caught up in the incident, but 50 injured. So, a new grim figure I

:19:54. > :19:57.guess coming out as part of that press conference will stop 15 people

:19:58. > :20:04.are said to be in a very serious condition. And of course, we all

:20:05. > :20:09.knew that it is 13 dead, confirmed dead, for now. Also, two people

:20:10. > :20:13.arrested. And obviously we have been hearing, and it does seem that more

:20:14. > :20:18.Spanish media are backing this up, that one suspect has been shot in a

:20:19. > :20:23.shoot out with police in an area to the west of Barcelona city. So,

:20:24. > :20:26.still in Catalonia about a couple of kilometres to the west of the city.

:20:27. > :20:30.Potentially linked to the record was yellow that is what Spanish media

:20:31. > :20:34.are saying. They are basically saying that it could have been

:20:35. > :20:39.linked. There were reports earlier on another main avenue. Las Ramblas

:20:40. > :20:42.is a big avenue, but it is mainly a pedestrian area. Traffic flows down

:20:43. > :20:48.the small side roads down the side of the big Avenue. Diagonal is a

:20:49. > :20:52.much more kind of traffic through fear, a big, big avenue. On that

:20:53. > :20:56.avenue earlier there were reports that a police officer had been run

:20:57. > :21:01.down. Spanish media are linking that policeman being run down by what

:21:02. > :21:05.they are saying is a car who broke through point of control. Catalan

:21:06. > :21:09.police, once this started happening, they were throwing up roadblocks all

:21:10. > :21:13.over the place trying to control the flow of people and get the city into

:21:14. > :21:17.lockdown. And then they are saying that this car broke through a

:21:18. > :21:20.control, according to a Catalan newspaper that is a pretty

:21:21. > :21:23.trustworthy source, although this is an evolving situation so some of

:21:24. > :21:34.these details could end up being wrong, but at the moment they and

:21:35. > :21:37.other Spanish media are backing them up and saying that there was a shoot

:21:38. > :21:39.out in this area linked to the policeman being run down in the

:21:40. > :21:42.centre of Barcelona, and a shoot out just outside of the city, one

:21:43. > :21:44.suspect that. One suspect dead and two arrests. We have just had

:21:45. > :21:48.another update to say that the figure is now 12 dead. And we said

:21:49. > :21:52.50 injured. I heard 12 in the press conference on Spanish radio. That's

:21:53. > :21:56.a bit confusing. It is an evolving situation. People are being treated

:21:57. > :22:00.on the ground as well. They were saying 13, I heard that on Spanish

:22:01. > :22:04.radio but I wasn't sure that I heard it correctly. I heard them saying

:22:05. > :22:13.Paul Doswell. It seems that the figures are changing. It is a really

:22:14. > :22:15.shocking incident -- I heard them saying 12 as well. Police are

:22:16. > :22:18.following Leeds. We have had great MERS from the Royal household in

:22:19. > :22:23.Spain. There is a statement coming out from them -- we have heard from

:22:24. > :22:32.rural household in Spain. Mariano Rajoy, the Spanish Prime Minister,

:22:33. > :22:36.he said that terrorists will never defeat a country that loves freedom

:22:37. > :22:42.against barbarity. At 12pm tomorrow, this was coming out of the press

:22:43. > :22:47.conference in Placa de Catalunya, one of the main squares in

:22:48. > :22:52.Barcelona, almost an Las Ramblas, there will be one minute's silence

:22:53. > :22:57.at 12pm tomorrow. And the Mayoress of Barcelona was talking about that.

:22:58. > :23:01.She was coming out and saying, look, you know, Barcelona, we are proud of

:23:02. > :23:06.our city, it is a diverse place and a peaceful place, normally. It is

:23:07. > :23:11.proud of diversity and democracy. She said they are trying to spread

:23:12. > :23:17.hate, and those people who carried out this terrible attack will not

:23:18. > :23:20.succeed. Tom, keep listening, the across the developing situation.

:23:21. > :23:27.Thank you very much. Just to let you know, we are going to keep you right

:23:28. > :23:29.up to date with all of the stories breaking from Barcelona in the

:23:30. > :23:35.security operation and we are keeping on top of the casualty list.

:23:36. > :23:43.Obviously that is changing. Going to get you some other news. In the US,

:23:44. > :23:46.the fallout from the violence in Charlottesville continues. A tweet

:23:47. > :23:53.sent by President Trump today rather rubs salt in the wounds reopened by

:23:54. > :23:58.the deaths and injuries in Virginia at the weekend. It is sad to see the

:23:59. > :24:02.history and Codjo of our great country being ripped apart with the

:24:03. > :24:07.removal of our beautiful statues and monuments. He was referring to the

:24:08. > :24:10.age old debate over relics of the proslavery southern confederacy, the

:24:11. > :24:13.side that was of course defeated in America's Civil War. That is what

:24:14. > :24:16.started the trouble in Charl is full. There was an organised protest

:24:17. > :24:22.at the weekend against the removal of this statute of a Confederate

:24:23. > :24:26.general. There are dozens more such monuments around the country. There

:24:27. > :24:29.is a map in the New York Times today which is interesting. This shows

:24:30. > :24:33.just some of the places where you can see these monuments. The marked

:24:34. > :24:37.in red are where statues and monuments have been removed from

:24:38. > :24:42.public grounds. The marks in great where they are expected to be taken

:24:43. > :24:45.down. You can see just what a big national story this is. Let's bring

:24:46. > :24:53.up Anthony Zurcher in Washington for us is ever hear an outside schools.

:24:54. > :24:57.Donald Trump is a very defiant wit. -- Donald Trump said a very defiant

:24:58. > :25:02.wit and it seems like he is spoiling for this fight. He wants this debate

:25:03. > :25:06.to be overcome by Fritz was that she is. A poll came out earlier today

:25:07. > :25:09.showing that 60% of Americans actually don't mind having this that

:25:10. > :25:13.use bad, the smaller minority want them removed -- by statues there. If

:25:14. > :25:18.Donald Trump can change the nature of this debate into whether or not

:25:19. > :25:22.that use can be on public land, I think that as a fight they are

:25:23. > :25:25.willing to have -- whether or not that use. It indicates that Donald

:25:26. > :25:30.Trump is coming down with both feet in favour of what the people, the

:25:31. > :25:33.white nationalists were marching for on Saturday, which coming just a few

:25:34. > :25:38.days after the violence in Charlottesville is pretty

:25:39. > :25:42.remarkable. Anthony Zurcher, thank you for that quick update. I should

:25:43. > :25:45.say that we are going to keep you well up-to-date with what is

:25:46. > :25:49.happening in Barcelona. The next edition of Outside Source begins in

:25:50. > :25:53.just the few minutes. Tuesday with us, we'll keep you right up to date

:25:54. > :26:14.and might's moving news story. -- do stay with us.

:26:15. > :26:20.Good evening. I know that some may be travelling to the United States

:26:21. > :26:25.imminently to witness the solar eclipse on Sunday. Just bear in mind

:26:26. > :26:26.there is some poor weather around at the moment, particularly. And
