0:00:19 > 0:00:21America's agony - again - as 17 students and teachers

0:00:21 > 0:00:24are killed in the 18th school shooting in the US this year.

0:00:24 > 0:00:27He ran up and down the hallway - just banging and shooting

0:00:27 > 0:00:29at the classrooms - he shot through my door.

0:00:29 > 0:00:32Nikolas Cruz was arrested after going on the run.

0:00:32 > 0:00:39President Trump today pledged to make schools safer.

0:00:40 > 0:00:45No child, no teacher should ever be in danger in an American school.

0:00:45 > 0:00:46All change in South Africa -

0:00:46 > 0:00:47Cyril Ramaphosa says one

0:00:47 > 0:00:56of his priorities as new president will be to fight corruption.

0:00:56 > 0:00:58A staggering statistic - one in six children now

0:00:58 > 0:01:01lives in a conflict zone, says Save the Children.

0:01:01 > 0:01:03We ask the charity what this means for the children now -

0:01:04 > 0:01:13and in the future.

0:01:23 > 0:01:26The United States is reeling from its third deadliest school

0:01:26 > 0:01:28shooting in modern history.

0:01:28 > 0:01:30This is 19-year-old Nikolas Cruz.

0:01:30 > 0:01:33He has been identified as the gunman and charged with seventeen counts

0:01:33 > 0:01:38of premeditated murder.

0:01:38 > 0:01:41It happened in Parkland in Florida

0:01:41 > 0:01:43at Marjory Stoneman Douglas High School -

0:01:43 > 0:01:45the school Nikolas Cruz used to attend.

0:01:45 > 0:01:48This is the 18th school shooting in America this year alone.

0:01:48 > 0:01:50And each time the question of how this could happen is asked.

0:01:50 > 0:01:53Here's Florida Governor, Rick Scott.

0:01:53 > 0:01:55How could this ever happen in this country?

0:01:55 > 0:01:58How could this happen in this state?

0:01:58 > 0:02:00This is a state that is focused on keeping all

0:02:00 > 0:02:02of our children safe.

0:02:02 > 0:02:04You come to the conclusion this is just absolutely

0:02:04 > 0:02:10pure evil.

0:02:10 > 0:02:12So what do we know of the gunman?

0:02:12 > 0:02:14Well, a lot comes from Nikolas Cruz's own social media posts.

0:02:14 > 0:02:17This is his Instagram page.

0:02:17 > 0:02:22There are dozens of photos of weapons and

0:02:22 > 0:02:25him posing with guns and knives, and wearing a balaclava.

0:02:25 > 0:02:28We know he was expelled from the school for disciplinary reasons.

0:02:28 > 0:02:31A Math teach Jim Gard said "we were told last year

0:02:31 > 0:02:34that he wasn't allowed on campus with a backpack on him."

0:02:34 > 0:02:36But still, he wasn't high on the police's radar.

0:02:36 > 0:02:40Here's the County Sheriff.

0:02:40 > 0:02:45He is in custody. We have begun to dissect his websites and the things

0:02:45 > 0:02:49on social media that he was on.

0:02:49 > 0:02:52During Wednesday's Outside Source - this shooting was still active -

0:02:52 > 0:02:54we brought you the story, but only from helicopter

0:02:54 > 0:02:57aerials at that stage - now we have have a lot more detail.

0:02:57 > 0:02:59Many students had mobile phones, and recorded and uploaded

0:02:59 > 0:03:00what they were experiencing.

0:03:00 > 0:03:03A warning - some of it is disturbing.

0:03:03 > 0:03:05This is a student's video of the terrifying

0:03:05 > 0:03:15moment shots rang out.

0:03:21 > 0:03:26The shooting began near the end of the school day.

0:03:26 > 0:03:28The gunman set off a fire alarm so students

0:03:28 > 0:03:29would have to evacuate.

0:03:29 > 0:03:30These are pictures of students running

0:03:30 > 0:03:32for their lives from the school.

0:03:32 > 0:03:33It was Valentines day.

0:03:33 > 0:03:38Many children were seen holding flowers and gifts as they fled.

0:03:38 > 0:03:40People barricaded themselves inside classrooms and hid in cupboards.

0:03:40 > 0:03:45Some had to wait for more than an hour.

0:03:45 > 0:03:47This is the moment officers arrived in one classroom, and pupils

0:03:47 > 0:03:57realized they were finally safe.

0:03:57 > 0:04:07And here's what some of the students who escaped had to say.

0:04:07 > 0:04:11He ran up and down the hallway just banging and shooting in to the

0:04:11 > 0:04:22classrooms.Kids were evacuating. I heard five pops.One of our teachers

0:04:22 > 0:04:29said, run as fast as you can and I heard a gunshot. There were teachers

0:04:29 > 0:04:34telling us to get into rooms and the quiet.

0:04:34 > 0:04:36Adding to the confusion for authorities, Nikolas Cruz had

0:04:36 > 0:04:38concealed himself among the fleeing crowds of students

0:04:38 > 0:04:40to try and escape.

0:04:40 > 0:04:45He was eventually arrested in a nearby suburb without incident.

0:04:45 > 0:04:48In the last few hours we've heard a white supremacist group say

0:04:48 > 0:04:49he had ties to them.

0:04:49 > 0:04:56Then there were scenes like these.

0:04:56 > 0:04:58Incredible relief for the parents who were reunited

0:04:58 > 0:04:59with their children.

0:04:59 > 0:05:02There were emotional scenes outside the school and at a nearby hospital

0:05:02 > 0:05:05where the wounded were taken.

0:05:05 > 0:05:08We're also hearing incredible stories of bravery.

0:05:08 > 0:05:13This is Football Coach Aaron Feis.

0:05:13 > 0:05:15He was killed trying to shield students.

0:05:15 > 0:05:19And the first of the student victims have been named.

0:05:19 > 0:05:21This is Jaime Guttenberg.

0:05:21 > 0:05:27Her family confirmed her death on Facebook.

0:05:27 > 0:05:32Sadly, these types of attacks are frequent.

0:05:32 > 0:05:33These

0:05:33 > 0:05:36are the worst shootings in the country since 1999.

0:05:36 > 0:05:38Wednesday's attack is the deadliest at a US high school -

0:05:38 > 0:05:46surpassing the Columbine High School massacre.

0:05:46 > 0:05:48while this shooting was going on - Senator Chris Murphy -

0:05:48 > 0:05:50whose district includes Sandy Hook Elementary School - stood

0:05:50 > 0:05:54up in the senate and said this.

0:05:54 > 0:05:59This happens nowhere else other than the United States of America. This

0:05:59 > 0:06:08epidemic of mass slaughter. School shooting after school shooting. It

0:06:08 > 0:06:15only happens here not because of coincidence, not because of bad

0:06:15 > 0:06:19luck, but as a consequence of our inaction.

0:06:19 > 0:06:20So what's been

0:06:20 > 0:06:21the political fallout so far?

0:06:21 > 0:06:31Well, a little earlier President Trump addressed the nation.

0:06:36 > 0:06:46We are here for you, whatever we can do, to ease your pain. We are all

0:06:46 > 0:06:50joined together as one American family. And you are suffering as our

0:06:50 > 0:06:59burden also.

0:06:59 > 0:07:08Strong on emotion, but there no mention of gun control.

0:07:08 > 0:07:13Ahead of the shooting this was posted by the gunman. This is very

0:07:13 > 0:07:20likely to be their weapons he used. In this article in the early times

0:07:20 > 0:07:24it reveals that the latest and deadliest mass shootings in America

0:07:24 > 0:07:30all involved that particular weapon. Firearm rights are such a divisive

0:07:30 > 0:07:36topic in America. People are concerned about their

0:07:36 > 0:07:42rights as am I. What about the rights of these students? Don't they

0:07:42 > 0:07:51have the right to be protected by the United States Government?

0:07:51 > 0:07:56And be received this update from our correspondent.

0:07:56 > 0:08:00The people I have spoken to are still feeling emotional about this.

0:08:00 > 0:08:06Some adults are still trying about this when they are asked who they

0:08:06 > 0:08:11are doing. Students say they are still in shock, they say they did

0:08:11 > 0:08:18not expect something like this. It is something they have seen numerous

0:08:18 > 0:08:24times on their television screens in other parts of the nation. We have

0:08:24 > 0:08:28also been hearing from those who have been victims here, that they do

0:08:28 > 0:08:33want some kind of action on something, anything, to reduce these

0:08:33 > 0:08:38types of shootings. The teacher who helped shield 19 kids in the closet

0:08:38 > 0:08:43of her classroom saying that the nation failed them and failed to

0:08:43 > 0:08:46keep them safe. These are the types of stories we are hearing again and

0:08:46 > 0:08:52again. Where is the investigation heading?

0:08:52 > 0:08:55How much was known about the threat that this individual might have

0:08:55 > 0:09:00posed? Authorities here say they will be

0:09:00 > 0:09:05doing an exhaustive investigation, speaking to students to get a

0:09:05 > 0:09:10clearer picture of what they knew about this shooter. He was on the

0:09:10 > 0:09:16FBI's reader as early as November. At that point he was flagged up to

0:09:16 > 0:09:20the agency because he posted a message that said, he was going to

0:09:20 > 0:09:28be a professional school shooter. The FBI has said that they did hold

0:09:28 > 0:09:31an investigation, they could not identify who that person was, they

0:09:31 > 0:09:38have promised again to look into that investigation. We do know he

0:09:38 > 0:09:44was in court recently charged in front of a judge with those 17

0:09:44 > 0:09:48counts of premeditated murder. He is being held now without bail. The

0:09:48 > 0:09:52authorities are trying to piece together what other groups he was

0:09:52 > 0:09:56involved. There was a white supremacist group he was involved

0:09:56 > 0:10:02with here in Florida. And other messages on social media that could

0:10:02 > 0:10:06give a clue into his mortar. We ask the same questions about guns

0:10:06 > 0:10:11in America, do you expect anything to change?

0:10:11 > 0:10:14I keep saying that our country is more divided than ever on this

0:10:14 > 0:10:21issue. You have a president who is an ally of the gun lobby

0:10:21 > 0:10:25organisation and what we have heard from lawmakers today does not shed

0:10:25 > 0:10:32any comfort to those who want to see some consensus on this issue.

0:10:32 > 0:10:36We will be hearing from the pro-gunners side of the debate in 20

0:10:36 > 0:10:50minutes time. -- from the pro-gun side of this debate.

0:10:50 > 0:10:51South Africa has a new leader.

0:10:51 > 0:10:53Cyril Ramaphosa was officially sworn in as President -

0:10:53 > 0:10:56just 16 hours after his predecessor Jacob Zuma was forced to step down.

0:10:56 > 0:10:58This is what happened in parliament today.

0:10:58 > 0:11:00I declare the honourable Cyril Ramaphosa duly elected

0:11:00 > 0:11:08President of the Republic of South Africa.

0:11:08 > 0:11:10Well as you saw, the chamber erupted into cheers.

0:11:10 > 0:11:14But take a look at what happened next.

0:11:14 > 0:11:24More scenes of jubilation - and singing.

0:11:26 > 0:11:27Cyril Ramaphosa began his term by declaring

0:11:28 > 0:11:29a new era for South Africa.

0:11:29 > 0:11:30A promise to fight corruption.

0:11:30 > 0:11:32And a pledge to serve the people.

0:11:32 > 0:11:39Let's hear him.

0:11:39 > 0:11:41When one is elected in this type of position, you basically become

0:11:41 > 0:11:45a servant of the people of South Africa, and I'll seek

0:11:45 > 0:11:49to execute that task with humility, faithfulness

0:11:49 > 0:11:53and with dignity as well.

0:11:53 > 0:12:02That is what I will seek to do.

0:12:09 > 0:12:15Ramaphosa's elevation caps a week of suspense and drama.

0:12:15 > 0:12:18We showed you this last night - Jacob Zuma officially resigning.

0:12:18 > 0:12:20He was effectively pushed from the top job by his

0:12:20 > 0:12:21own party, the ANC.

0:12:21 > 0:12:24The ultimatum - step down, or face a vote of no-confidence.

0:12:24 > 0:12:27Zuma has been dogged by corruption allegations, a charge he denies.

0:12:27 > 0:12:29So what's ahead for South Africa's new leader?

0:12:29 > 0:12:30Cyril Ramaphosa's job won't be easy.

0:12:30 > 0:12:31The economy is faltering.

0:12:31 > 0:12:34Unemployment sits at nearly 27%.

0:12:34 > 0:12:38And corruption is rife.

0:12:38 > 0:12:48More now from Milton Nkosi.

0:12:53 > 0:13:01The ANC recalled President Zuma, they did not give any reasons. They

0:13:01 > 0:13:06had wanted to stay on until June, he said. But wait on Wednesday he

0:13:06 > 0:13:12addressed the nation, saying that he is stepping down because he believes

0:13:12 > 0:13:18in the Constitution. His own comrades within the African National

0:13:18 > 0:13:25Congress had already gone to Parliament with opposition parties

0:13:25 > 0:13:28to have a fort of no confidence if he was not going to resign

0:13:28 > 0:13:36voluntarily. Because he offered his resignation they then changed that

0:13:36 > 0:13:43allocated slot in Parliament to swear them in Cyril Ramaphosa, who

0:13:43 > 0:13:51is now the current president of South Africa. Now South Africa, the

0:13:51 > 0:13:59mood in the country, is that of euphoria, excitement, and more

0:13:59 > 0:14:03importantly of hope. South Africans believe that Cyril Ramaphosa will

0:14:03 > 0:14:07change the direction of the economic growth of South Africa which has

0:14:07 > 0:14:13been stagnant and fairly sluggish in recent years, partly because of the

0:14:13 > 0:14:20global outlook, but also because of internal self-inflicted wounds of

0:14:20 > 0:14:29corruption, infighting within the governing African National Congress,

0:14:29 > 0:14:34and of course the cronyism allegations that have been hanging

0:14:34 > 0:14:41over President Zuma for so long. Cyril Ramaphosa campaigned towards

0:14:41 > 0:14:47the end of last year on the ticket of anti-corruption. He is determined

0:14:47 > 0:14:50that he wants a corrupt three Government and the business friendly

0:14:50 > 0:15:00South Africa.

0:15:01 > 0:15:12-- corrupt-free Government.

0:15:13 > 0:15:16Here a former youth football coach has been found guilty

0:15:16 > 0:15:17of the remaining sexual assault charges against him.

0:15:17 > 0:15:19In total, Barry Bennell was convicted of 43

0:15:19 > 0:15:22offences against 11 boys between 1979 and 1990.

0:15:22 > 0:15:31One of his victims spoke outside court.

0:15:31 > 0:15:36I am so proud of all the victims that have come forward, not only in

0:15:36 > 0:15:42this case, but others that are still waiting. I am proud of what I have

0:15:42 > 0:15:46achieved in terms of allowing these lads up stairs to get the justice

0:15:46 > 0:15:52that they have deserved for many years. That has been a tough 15

0:15:52 > 0:15:59months or so for me and my family. I had recently lost my father, I know

0:15:59 > 0:16:05he is looking down on us now. I am proud of my wife sticking by me. I

0:16:05 > 0:16:11am proud of my children. And more importantly, that justice has been

0:16:11 > 0:16:24served to the people will be able move on, including myself.

0:16:26 > 0:16:31President Trump says making American schools safer as his top priority

0:16:31 > 0:16:37after 17 pupils and staff were killed by a gunman and followed up.

0:16:37 > 0:16:42Reports that the Nato led military mission in Afghanistan has rejected

0:16:42 > 0:16:46an offer by the Taliban to end the Waugh in the country through talks.

0:16:46 > 0:16:56The offer was made in the rare open letter.

0:16:56 > 0:17:04The US secretary of state has warned that the involvement of the Lebanese

0:17:04 > 0:17:11militant group will have a negative impact on Lebanon itself.

0:17:11 > 0:17:17Lots of people are taking this online journey, it is a restaurant

0:17:17 > 0:17:22in Tokyo, diners have a four course dinner and a virtual reality handset

0:17:22 > 0:17:29that can take to Rome, Paris, or New York.

0:17:29 > 0:17:32South Africa's new President has a big job ahead of him.

0:17:32 > 0:17:34At the top of Cyril Ramaphosa's agenda will be reviving

0:17:34 > 0:17:37the nation's struggling economy.

0:17:37 > 0:17:39The latest figures show economic growth of just 2% -

0:17:39 > 0:17:42political turmoil and poor public finances have been big problems.

0:17:42 > 0:17:43So too is the staggeringly high unemployment

0:17:43 > 0:17:45rate of nearly 27%.

0:17:45 > 0:17:48It's one reason the country desperately needs more investment.

0:17:48 > 0:17:50And South Africa has been struggling

0:17:50 > 0:17:55to attract that from abroad.

0:17:55 > 0:17:56In 2016 foreign direct investment was $2.27bn

0:17:56 > 0:18:01which was significantly down on previous years.

0:18:01 > 0:18:04One economist we spoke to earlier said South Africa's economy

0:18:04 > 0:18:06is almost at rock bottom, and a big change

0:18:06 > 0:18:14in policy is needed.

0:18:14 > 0:18:20Today there is an enormous sigh of relief in the country. We have got

0:18:20 > 0:18:23rid of a president who has been a disaster for South Africa and we

0:18:23 > 0:18:28have a man with a track record who understands business and is

0:18:28 > 0:18:32determined to get the country moving again and has a clear plan of what

0:18:32 > 0:18:39to do. South Africa is almost at rock bottom. It is a big mountain we

0:18:39 > 0:18:44have to climb. There is a lot of pent-up investment, some of which

0:18:44 > 0:18:49had been halted because it did not suit their corruption and state

0:18:49 > 0:18:55capture project that was facilitated by the former president. You can

0:18:55 > 0:18:59turn sentiment very quickly and then we have to systematically make the

0:18:59 > 0:19:06right decisions and start to put South Africa on a much more labour

0:19:06 > 0:19:12intensive and much higher growth path.

0:19:12 > 0:19:14President Trump's budget plans for 2019 faced scrutiny today,

0:19:14 > 0:19:16as his Treasury Secretary Steve Mnuchin was grilled

0:19:16 > 0:19:19by an influential Congressional committee in Washington.

0:19:19 > 0:19:22In focus, reports of a plan to increase the federal gasoline tax

0:19:22 > 0:19:24by 25 cents to help fund the President's $1.5 trillion dollar

0:19:24 > 0:19:34infrastructure plan.

0:19:37 > 0:19:41Who are controversial is this? Extremely controversial. There is

0:19:41 > 0:19:47hardly anything more explosive than a tax on gasoline. Millions of

0:19:47 > 0:19:53Americans rely on driving on roads to get to work and their gasoline

0:19:53 > 0:20:00prices are fairly closely watched. But reportedly President Trump is

0:20:00 > 0:20:03behind this scheme to raise tax which hasn't been raised since Bill

0:20:03 > 0:20:07Clinton was in office and the rationale behind that which has

0:20:07 > 0:20:13support from both sides is that if anyone has 2p to fix America's

0:20:13 > 0:20:17crumbling roads it should be road users themselves and therefore it is

0:20:17 > 0:20:21only fair that they should see an increase in tax. Road users will see

0:20:21 > 0:20:25they have been paying this tax for many years and American roads have

0:20:25 > 0:20:30not seen much investment is why should they trust the Government by

0:20:30 > 0:20:38paying an extra 25 cents per gallon.

0:20:38 > 0:20:41Tens of thousands of Indian and Chinese women in the US

0:20:41 > 0:20:44could soon lose the right to work, as President Trump looks to overturn

0:20:44 > 0:20:45another Obama era policy.

0:20:45 > 0:20:52The BBC's Yogita Limaye reports from New York.

0:20:52 > 0:20:57America is the only home and her children have ever known.

0:21:01 > 0:21:09to highly skilled workers. And two years ago she was given the right to

0:21:09 > 0:21:16work in this country. Now President Trump intends to revoke that.

0:21:16 > 0:21:21It feels like I am getting back into a golden cage, it is as if they are

0:21:21 > 0:21:25sending this signal to me that my skill sets and abilities do not

0:21:25 > 0:21:33matter in this world and I should lead the life of a home maker rather

0:21:33 > 0:21:37than be a contributing member of society.Earlier this month she was

0:21:37 > 0:21:41among the group of Indians who gathered outside the US Capitol.

0:21:41 > 0:21:47Tens of thousands of women from China and India are most impacted by

0:21:47 > 0:21:50the change because the numbers of immigrants from these countries are

0:21:50 > 0:22:00high. This is a little bit of India in New Jersey just outside New York,

0:22:00 > 0:22:04one place Indians with technical skills have thrived over the

0:22:04 > 0:22:08decades, living the American dream. Employers have also benefited

0:22:08 > 0:22:13because hiring foreigners is cheaper. The previous administration

0:22:13 > 0:22:16to allow spouses of foreign workers to get jobs was opposed by

0:22:16 > 0:22:24subgroups. It was even challenged in court. A case that might be rendered

0:22:24 > 0:22:28irrelevant now given the views of the new president.Trump has been

0:22:28 > 0:22:31vocal that he wants jobs for Americans and he wants we just two

0:22:31 > 0:22:37entities. If you keep bringing in more workers the employer gets

0:22:37 > 0:22:42cheaper labour about that does not help the American worker. For many

0:22:42 > 0:22:47who make the journey from India, a country where social pressures often

0:22:47 > 0:22:53force women to quit jobs, the idea that America might deny them this

0:22:53 > 0:22:58right is hard to come to terms with.

0:22:58 > 0:23:00Let's bring you a couple of stories from the Olympics.

0:23:00 > 0:23:03We've talked a lot about the Russian athletes competing under the banner

0:23:03 > 0:23:05of the neutral Olympic Athletes from Russia name.

0:23:05 > 0:23:13Well the hockey team aren't taking any chances

0:23:13 > 0:23:16While fans can be as patriotic as they want -

0:23:16 > 0:23:25All the athletes signed a document saying they won't protest

0:23:25 > 0:23:29the ruling that turned Team Russia into the OAR.

0:23:29 > 0:23:31Kovalchuk says "We won't chase fans away if they're

0:23:31 > 0:23:32carrying Russian flags.

0:23:32 > 0:23:34We'll talk to them, explain it and take

0:23:34 > 0:23:35a photograph without the flag."

0:23:35 > 0:23:38For the athletes that have made it to the Olympics their journey has

0:23:38 > 0:23:41involved a lot of sports - now I have a journey

0:23:41 > 0:23:42might be more athletic.

0:23:42 > 0:23:46For a Swiss couple - who wanted to see their son compete -

0:23:46 > 0:23:50travelled to the Games almost all the way by bicycle.

0:23:50 > 0:23:52The end of an Olympic-sized journey.

0:23:52 > 0:23:55Guido Huwiler and his wife, Rita Ruttimann, arrive in the ski

0:24:12 > 0:24:17I wasn't too surprised to hear about the trip.

0:24:17 > 0:24:20Guido and Rita started their bike tour in March last year

0:24:20 > 0:24:21in Olten, Switzerland.

0:24:21 > 0:24:23Their journey took them through 20 countries,

0:24:23 > 0:24:29from the Balkans to Central Asia.

0:24:29 > 0:24:33Their toughest challenge was the Pamir Highway,

0:24:33 > 0:24:36a road that traverses mountains from Afghanistan to Kyrgyzstan.

0:24:36 > 0:24:41TRANSLATION: We were totally exhausted.

0:24:41 > 0:24:46After 2,500km on gravel road, up to 4,500m altitude,

0:24:46 > 0:24:48it was cold and we had very average, limited food.

0:24:48 > 0:24:51The pair had planned to bike the entire journey

0:24:51 > 0:24:58but because of visa issues, ended up breaking their journey

0:24:58 > 0:25:00and flying over China to Korea's capital, Seoul.

0:25:00 > 0:25:03From here, they braved freezing temperatures on bike.

0:25:03 > 0:25:06TRANSLATION: The past two nights we spent in our tent.

0:25:06 > 0:25:09In the morning, the inside the tent was all white,

0:25:09 > 0:25:10everything was frozen.

0:25:10 > 0:25:14The water in the coffee pot and the milk were both frozen -

0:25:14 > 0:25:15great!

0:25:15 > 0:25:19But the journey was worth it.

0:25:19 > 0:25:22TRANSLATION: I think it's great, just super, that he's made it

0:26:09 > 0:26:13The weather for the week ahead is on the Wii in half an hour but before

0:26:13 > 0:26:19then here are some weather stories from around the world. The Winter

0:26:19 > 0:26:22Olympics has been plagued by strong winds earlier in the big and damage

0:26:22 > 0:26:29in the village. A cyclone is developing in Australia. There is

0:26:29 > 0:26:40still a severe cyclone risk. The size of new Caledonia, you can see

0:26:40 > 0:26:45the eye of the storm. Very powerful and dangerous. Earlier it was

0:26:45 > 0:26:50category three. Whilst it has been in the Pacific Islands for a while

0:26:50 > 0:26:56it will drift southwards and beacon. Uncertainty about the track. The me

0:26:56 > 0:27:08the rain and to the north island of New Zealand by Sunday.

0:27:08 > 0:27:17By Sunday there may be a category three cyclone. This is to the West

0:27:17 > 0:27:23of the Philippines. This was a tropical storm earlier in the week.

0:27:23 > 0:27:30This system is no more. As you push up some warmer here you can see how

0:27:30 > 0:27:35the clouds develops along those coastal areas of Vietnam and

0:27:35 > 0:27:43remediate wetter weather by Saturday. Moving north, cold a year

0:27:43 > 0:27:49behind this band of cloud and wet weather sweeping away from Japan.

0:27:49 > 0:27:53With that calls a year coming in over the sea of Japan on those

0:27:53 > 0:28:01stronger winds we will find more snow showers for northern parts. But

0:28:01 > 0:28:08for the Korean peninsula it should be mainly dry. This is the forecast

0:28:08 > 0:28:13in the mountains. The next few days look generally dry. It's me turn

0:28:13 > 0:28:24milder over the next couple of days. The winds will be stronger on

0:28:24 > 0:28:28Saturday and Sunday. The winds injured up our strongest across the

0:28:28 > 0:28:35north-west. This band of cloud is producing some rain and snow over

0:28:35 > 0:28:50the Alps. A block of cold here and cloud. In the UK as we head towards

0:28:50 > 0:28:55the weekend, whilst we will see sunshine, still the chance of rain

0:28:55 > 0:28:59but it should be on the mild side.

0:30:05 > 0:30:06Hello, I'm Ros Atkins, this is Outside Source,

0:30:07 > 0:30:15and these are the main stories here in the BBC Newsroom.

0:30:15 > 0:30:23America's agony again as 17 students are killed in the 18th school

0:30:23 > 0:30:27shooting this year.He ran up and down the hallway shooting into the

0:30:27 > 0:30:36classrooms, he shot through my door. Nikolas Cruz was arrested after

0:30:36 > 0:30:42going on the run.Donald Trump pledged to make schools safer. No

0:30:42 > 0:30:47child, no teacher should ever feel in danger at an American school. All

0:30:47 > 0:30:53change in South Africa, the new Prime Minister said his priority

0:30:53 > 0:31:05will be to fight corruption. Your questions are always welcome. BBCOS

0:31:05 > 0:31:07is the hashtag.

0:31:13 > 0:31:16The United States is again forced to confront a mass school shooting -

0:31:16 > 0:31:17the 18th of the year.

0:31:17 > 0:31:20So far there has been one school shooting in the US

0:31:20 > 0:31:21on average every 60 hours.

0:31:21 > 0:31:23But even as politicians across the board said today that

0:31:23 > 0:31:25mass shootings have to stop, it seems they are

0:31:25 > 0:31:27only getting worse.

0:31:27 > 0:31:31Here's what the President said a little earlier.

0:31:40 > 0:31:45To every parent, teacher and child, who is hurting so badly, we are here

0:31:45 > 0:31:53for you, whatever you need, whatever we can do to ease your pain. We are

0:31:53 > 0:32:01all joined together as one American family. And you're suffering is our

0:32:01 > 0:32:09burden also. No child, no teacher should ever be in danger in an

0:32:09 > 0:32:11American school.

0:32:11 > 0:32:13After each of these shootings the gun debate takes over.

0:32:13 > 0:32:15Scarlett Lewis lost her six-year-old son Jesse

0:32:15 > 0:32:16in the Sandy Hook massacre.

0:32:16 > 0:32:18She says the education system needs to change

0:32:18 > 0:32:20to help emotional learning.

0:32:26 > 0:32:32The solution really is, and I have a life in the last five years since my

0:32:32 > 0:32:36son was murdered his first grade classroom that I was not going to

0:32:36 > 0:32:43wait for someone else to come up with the solution. I believe the

0:32:43 > 0:32:46solution is social and emotional learning and that's teaching kids

0:32:46 > 0:32:50how to get along and have healthier relationships and manage their

0:32:50 > 0:32:56emotions. This is not something that is innate, we have to learn the

0:32:56 > 0:33:00skills and tools and we haven't been teaching them and it is called

0:33:00 > 0:33:03social and emotional learning and there are decades of research

0:33:03 > 0:33:09showing that this actively prevents suffering before it starts.

0:33:09 > 0:33:11Scarlett Lewis stands at one end of the gun debate -

0:33:11 > 0:33:14but like many others she's given up on actual gun control.

0:33:14 > 0:33:17At the other end stand those who oppose any gun control

0:33:17 > 0:33:20in the name of the sacred second amendment to the US Constitution -

0:33:20 > 0:33:22AWR Hawkins is in that camp and joins us now.

0:33:22 > 0:33:28You're the 2nd amendment columnist for Breitbart news.

0:33:28 > 0:33:33A warm welcome to you on outside source. From your perspective when

0:33:33 > 0:33:38you see a tragedy like this, do you think something needs to change?I

0:33:38 > 0:33:42do think something needs to change. Thank you for having me. Something

0:33:42 > 0:33:46needs to change and they do not think it is gun control. Gun control

0:33:46 > 0:33:52doesn't work and it isn't working but I believe we need to in America

0:33:52 > 0:33:58quit having these gun free zones. We have resource officers outside of

0:33:58 > 0:34:01the schools and it is confirmed there was at least one resource

0:34:01 > 0:34:07officer that is armed. It is easy to skip one the source officer and once

0:34:07 > 0:34:11you do that you are among a crowd of unarmed people, whether armed with a

0:34:11 > 0:34:15knife or done by the billy club you can do what you want and nobody can

0:34:15 > 0:34:22send you off. I have contended for a long time that teachers, we have

0:34:22 > 0:34:27concealed permits in America, teachers who want to do that should

0:34:27 > 0:34:30be able to and I think it is reasonable and will allow them to

0:34:30 > 0:34:33defend their own lives and the lives of the children.Let's make clear

0:34:33 > 0:34:38what you believe. You believe more guns in schools would prevent gun

0:34:38 > 0:34:43violence like we have been seeing?I believe in teachers being armed

0:34:43 > 0:34:48rather than sitting ducks. The teachers who are denied the right to

0:34:48 > 0:34:54carry any social studies class, the league and carry a gun with them at

0:34:54 > 0:35:00the mole and at Walmart and the restaurant. Why not in school, for

0:35:00 > 0:35:06self defence. Is there life is not worth defending at school. There is

0:35:06 > 0:35:10a weird pyridine.I wonder if you can explain to the many people

0:35:10 > 0:35:13watching who see tragedy like this time and time again in America and

0:35:13 > 0:35:18wonder why it doesn't do anything to change the minds of people who

0:35:18 > 0:35:25support the second Amendment, even when it comes to things like the

0:35:25 > 0:35:32semiautomatic rifle like the AR-15. There are far more powerful weapons.

0:35:32 > 0:35:35It is powerful enough when you see the carnage inflicted recently in

0:35:35 > 0:35:43various attacks. What you have to think about like this, the FBI said

0:35:43 > 0:35:48in 2014 that four times as many people were stabbed to death as were

0:35:48 > 0:35:53killed by rifles of any kind. Only a small percentage of those rifle

0:35:53 > 0:36:01deaths would be AR-15 bets, rifles of any kind. The AR-15 is demonised

0:36:01 > 0:36:06because people do use it in the settings at times but it is by no

0:36:06 > 0:36:11means the most widely used gun.But why would a civilian need to own

0:36:11 > 0:36:16something like that? Explain that I was.Why do you think a civilian

0:36:16 > 0:36:21should be able to carry one like that? They usually don't, they are

0:36:21 > 0:36:28too bulky, but a mir to matter, any handgun, they're much easier to use,

0:36:28 > 0:36:32for women, concealed carry. They are easy to operate and it allows a

0:36:32 > 0:36:35woman to get an edge on an attacker because she has more rounds and can

0:36:35 > 0:36:41fire them with greater these and the gun is more compact. When we talk

0:36:41 > 0:36:47about a semiautomatic nobody carries eight AR-15. That is just leftist

0:36:47 > 0:36:50jargon and I am not accusing you of that but here in the United States,

0:36:50 > 0:36:56it is a strawman. People don't carry it and it is a reason why criminals

0:36:56 > 0:37:01really use it in crime and the few times we do see it used in crime we

0:37:01 > 0:37:05see the kind of coverage we have seen in the last 24 hours. When you

0:37:05 > 0:37:11hear Senator Marty whose district covers Sandy Hook says, no other

0:37:11 > 0:37:16country has these kinds of mass slaughter, it is not coincidence, it

0:37:16 > 0:37:22is our in action. What is your response to that?I take it with a

0:37:22 > 0:37:25grain of salt. The Mexican murder rate is far higher than us. I can

0:37:25 > 0:37:34look at France in 2013 and they have far stricter gun control laws and

0:37:34 > 0:37:38130 people were killed there and I can keep picking those spots. You

0:37:38 > 0:37:42are generally seeing tighter gun control would not result in fewer

0:37:42 > 0:37:49deaths, you think it would make no difference?Look at France. Was it

0:37:49 > 0:37:522016 when the gentleman hopped on the truck and ran over 84 people? He

0:37:52 > 0:37:58didn't need a gun. This is what Chris Murphy misses. Ultimately if

0:37:58 > 0:38:03you have a group of unarmed citizens they can fall prey to someone armed

0:38:03 > 0:38:09with anything, be it an author a firearm or a knife, so I do not

0:38:09 > 0:38:14subscribe to the view that the solution is to make sure law-abiding

0:38:14 > 0:38:18citizens are less armed. They should be armed for self defence and I

0:38:18 > 0:38:23think the problem is in our schools teachers are denied the ability to

0:38:23 > 0:38:30be armed so they are sitting ducks. We are out of time, thank you.

0:38:30 > 0:38:32Well that's 2nd amendment side of gun control.

0:38:32 > 0:38:36But like most things in America - it's a divided debate.

0:38:36 > 0:38:39That's exactly the angle that Anthony Zurcher has been looking

0:38:40 > 0:38:47at on the BBC website.

0:38:47 > 0:38:51He talks about the two Americas. It doesn't sound like much changes what

0:38:51 > 0:38:58ever happens? What we have seen after this latest incident is what

0:38:58 > 0:39:02we have seen after every single major incident of gun violence over

0:39:02 > 0:39:09the last decade, which is anger on one side, defensiveness on the gun

0:39:09 > 0:39:13right side, talking about doing something and Congress, in action,

0:39:13 > 0:39:19and people forget until the next one. The reality is there's just no

0:39:19 > 0:39:24overwhelming press outside of just the days afterwards to have some

0:39:24 > 0:39:29sort of comprehensive gun control legislation. The NRA is too

0:39:29 > 0:39:34powerful, Republicans in Congress will block this, even when Democrats

0:39:34 > 0:39:38held the Senate, the rod enough Republicans to block any kind of gun

0:39:38 > 0:39:42control, so now we hear more talk about mental health and addressing

0:39:42 > 0:39:45mental health issues and school safety but gun control seems like a

0:39:45 > 0:39:51bridge again once again.Do check his article out on the BBC website.

0:39:51 > 0:39:55Don't forget you can get much more detail on our top stories on our Web

0:39:55 > 0:39:56site There is full coverage on..

0:39:56 > 0:39:59- including more accounts from survivors, as well as reaction

0:40:02 > 0:40:04in the US - on our website.

0:40:06 > 0:40:08More children than ever before are living in conflict areas,

0:40:08 > 0:40:10at risk of death and violence.

0:40:10 > 0:40:13This is from a new report by the Charity Save the Children.

0:40:13 > 0:40:15Countries like Syria in the Middle East Afghanistan

0:40:15 > 0:40:18in Asia, and Somalia in Africa came out as the worst countries

0:40:18 > 0:40:19for young people.

0:40:19 > 0:40:23In the report, the charity said at least 357 million children -

0:40:23 > 0:40:25that's one out of every six children, were living

0:40:25 > 0:40:31in conflict zones.

0:40:31 > 0:40:38That's an increase of 75% since the early '90s.

0:40:38 > 0:40:40And according to a record of incidents verified by the UN,

0:40:40 > 0:40:43there's been a 300% increase in the number of children killed

0:40:43 > 0:40:47and maimed since 2010.

0:40:47 > 0:40:49Caroline Anning is Senior Conflict & Humanitarian Policy Adviser

0:40:49 > 0:40:55and co-author of the War on Children report.

0:41:02 > 0:41:07What my colleagues and myself wanted to do, we work day-to-day in Syria

0:41:07 > 0:41:11and Yemen and South Sudan and we see what is happening, and to take a

0:41:11 > 0:41:14look back and to look at 20 years of history and see things are getting

0:41:14 > 0:41:18better and worse, it often feels worse but are they really?

0:41:18 > 0:41:24Unfortunately we found that it looks like they are. More than 350 million

0:41:24 > 0:41:28living in conflict, that has gone up significantly in the last 20 years,

0:41:28 > 0:41:32and they also found the threat those children were facing, whether the

0:41:32 > 0:41:39rate at being killed and maimed was also going up. And what is behind

0:41:39 > 0:41:46these huge increases? Simply a matter of more war?Yes, water going

0:41:46 > 0:41:50on for longer, they are becoming more protracted and you to look at

0:41:50 > 0:41:55the Warren Serie A where there are dozens of groups fighting in one

0:41:55 > 0:41:59area, and the results on increased use of expose of weapons in

0:41:59 > 0:42:04populated areas, saw in areas where children are living, the those heavy

0:42:04 > 0:42:08weaponry, dropping on playgrounds and schools and people are not being

0:42:08 > 0:42:12held to account for that, for the behaviour, for the destruction they

0:42:12 > 0:42:18are reaching.Aside from the physical threat, the things that war

0:42:18 > 0:42:22does to the present of the children but the future of these children is

0:42:22 > 0:42:28completely disrupted and they don't even have education.That is the

0:42:28 > 0:42:32real worry. I was in Yemen last year that I have met children whose lives

0:42:32 > 0:42:36are physically destroyed, children whose spines have been blown out,

0:42:36 > 0:42:41chilled and lined in band deafened but also children who have not been

0:42:41 > 0:42:45able to go to school for 2-3 years have seen their parents killed and

0:42:45 > 0:42:48traumatised and don't have access to some of the services and support

0:42:48 > 0:42:53they need. We and other agencies are there to help them recover and most

0:42:53 > 0:42:59of my colleagues on the ground are all doing they can to help fix the

0:42:59 > 0:43:03society, but really it is a global problem we have to tackle together

0:43:03 > 0:43:07because otherwise this is allowed to fester then we will see a cycle of

0:43:07 > 0:43:09violence were children who have been dramatised are perpetuating

0:43:09 > 0:43:14conflict.Is there anything in your report that gets you cause for

0:43:14 > 0:43:20optimism?In a way that might sound counterintuitive, that we know

0:43:20 > 0:43:24things have got worse shows they were better and we can get back to

0:43:24 > 0:43:30that point. We now the examples in this report of the children we are

0:43:30 > 0:43:33working with and the work we have done, that with the right support

0:43:33 > 0:43:38children are incredibly resilient. They can recover and the things they

0:43:38 > 0:43:42can recover from a Rammy Singh. With just basic support, having enough

0:43:42 > 0:43:46food to eat and being able to go to school, it is all they really need

0:43:46 > 0:43:48and that gives me cause for optimism.

0:43:48 > 0:43:51We heard earlier that South Africa has got a new president.

0:43:51 > 0:43:53Well, Ethiopia has lost its prime minister.

0:43:53 > 0:43:54Hailemariam Desalegn has resigned unexpectedly.

0:43:54 > 0:44:04Here's his announcement on state television.

0:44:09 > 0:44:13The reason why have decided to resign as to ensure a sustainable

0:44:13 > 0:44:16peace and democracy in our country. The party has welcomed my decision

0:44:16 > 0:44:18to resign.

0:44:18 > 0:44:21Mr Hailemariam became prime minister in 2012 but much of his time

0:44:21 > 0:44:25in power has been dogged by protests - including this one at a religious

0:44:25 > 0:44:29festival in 2016 when more than 50 people died.

0:44:29 > 0:44:31The anti-government demonstrations first spread across the country

0:44:31 > 0:44:33in 2015 with calls for political and economic reform and an end

0:44:33 > 0:44:37to state corruption.

0:44:37 > 0:44:39Most of the unrest has centred on Ethiopia's

0:44:39 > 0:44:45two largest regions, Oromia and Amhara.

0:44:45 > 0:44:47In January, Mr Hailemariam announced he was going to free all political

0:44:47 > 0:44:49prisoners as a gesture of national reconciliation.

0:44:49 > 0:44:50Many were released but the protests continue.

0:44:50 > 0:44:52Here's Mary Harper - Regional Africa Editor -

0:44:52 > 0:44:55on how much of a change this is for an Ethiopian

0:44:55 > 0:45:02leader to step down.

0:45:07 > 0:45:13It normally has this very authoritarian ruler who stays until

0:45:13 > 0:45:16they die or are kicked out in a civil war. It is a pretty

0:45:16 > 0:45:22astonishing thing to happen. What can we read into his reasoning for

0:45:22 > 0:45:27his departure? He said he had to resign as part of the process to try

0:45:27 > 0:45:32to bring about reforms and the country to end these very serious

0:45:32 > 0:45:38unrest that has been going on in the main biggest regions, the two

0:45:38 > 0:45:43biggest ethnic groups, feeling politically and economically and

0:45:43 > 0:45:48socially marginalised and they have been leading violent protests for

0:45:48 > 0:45:52several years, so he said that as part of moves to try to bring about

0:45:52 > 0:45:58reforms he had to resign.I suppose the big question is whether his

0:45:58 > 0:46:01departure will make any difference? That is the question a lot and

0:46:01 > 0:46:05asking and even though many in Ethiopia have been tweeting and

0:46:05 > 0:46:08commenting saying they are delighted, they are seeing it

0:46:08 > 0:46:13depends on who replaces him. Ethiopia is a place that has always

0:46:13 > 0:46:20been governed by very authoritarian or even dictatorial rulers and

0:46:20 > 0:46:24unless they have someone from one of those two ethnic groups are genuine

0:46:24 > 0:46:29reformer, nothing is going to change, and that is what all eyes

0:46:29 > 0:46:34are on and it will probably be a fairly slow process, who they are

0:46:34 > 0:46:35going to select to replace Hailemariam Desalegn.

0:46:35 > 0:46:38Against the backdrop of that shocking attack on the students

0:46:38 > 0:46:40and faculty in Parkland Florida, we're going to take a look

0:46:40 > 0:46:42at another community that has long dealt with crippling

0:46:42 > 0:46:44levels of violence.

0:46:44 > 0:46:45Compton, in California, is synonymous with gang violence.

0:46:45 > 0:46:48It's an area of Los Angeles county, but in Compton, homicide and gun

0:46:48 > 0:46:50crime have been falling in recent years.

0:46:50 > 0:46:52The BBC's Katty Kay has this report, which contains flashing

0:46:52 > 0:46:57images from the start.

0:47:04 > 0:47:12Crime situation is high, very busy for a law enforcement. But it is a

0:47:12 > 0:47:17small percentage of people who are causing the problems.Eight night

0:47:17 > 0:47:22patrol with the LE sheriffs in the city of Compton. Two suspected

0:47:22 > 0:47:33members of the south side Compton Crips gang arrested. If they are in

0:47:33 > 0:47:37the arrival area they will have to be protection because it is almost

0:47:37 > 0:47:41expected they will be armed.Police estimate that almost 4000 gang

0:47:41 > 0:47:48members in Compton. Our service area is ten square miles. Fireworks. Ten

0:47:48 > 0:47:53square miles. Suffered every square mile we have we have six active

0:47:53 > 0:48:01gangs.37 gangs compete for control in a city of just 100,000 people.

0:48:05 > 0:48:11Compton's notorious street gangs, the Crips and the Bloods were formed

0:48:11 > 0:48:18in the 1960s. Their clothes and tatters and Julie all marked which

0:48:18 > 0:48:23gang they belonged to. Wearing the wrong coloured shirt would have and

0:48:23 > 0:48:26still could get you killed.

0:48:30 > 0:48:39Today, Compton is on the up. Compton's youthful Maher has made it

0:48:39 > 0:48:47her mission to transform the image and the economy of the city. In

0:48:47 > 0:48:532013, early into her first term and after 16 killings in just four

0:48:53 > 0:49:00months, she decided to hold a crisis meeting. She put a call out to the

0:49:00 > 0:49:05Bloods and Crips to try to arrange a truce. It was rocky at first and if

0:49:05 > 0:49:09you threaten to leave and I said the ground rules were we had to stay

0:49:09 > 0:49:13until we finished.What gave you that confidence?This is my

0:49:13 > 0:49:17community and they are not afraid of my own people. They are very

0:49:17 > 0:49:20pragmatic and talked about the need for employment opportunities that

0:49:20 > 0:49:25they can access, they talked about the barriers to their employment

0:49:25 > 0:49:28because of criminal records, but I told them, it is not about just what

0:49:28 > 0:49:33can I do for you, I I am willing to work for you if you're willing to

0:49:33 > 0:49:40make a commitment.Don and Fred are from rival gangs. Don is a Bloods.

0:49:40 > 0:49:48Fred is a Crip. If you had come across Don in the street ten or 15

0:49:48 > 0:49:54years ago?That would have been a problem. A fight over stabbing are

0:49:54 > 0:49:59shooting, one of the three.Because you were on rival gangs?Like I

0:49:59 > 0:50:04said, I was young and Durham. I didn't understand the life are

0:50:04 > 0:50:10nothing else. All I cared about was representing my gang to the fullest.

0:50:10 > 0:50:15You would have hurt him? Yes.He would have tried!

0:50:19 > 0:50:24Will is also a former gang member and he served 12 years in prison for

0:50:24 > 0:50:29a string of offences including carjacking and gun possession. In

0:50:29 > 0:50:36December 1989 he decided to turn his life around.A lot of the kids, they

0:50:36 > 0:50:38are looking for something when they join gangs, there is something

0:50:38 > 0:50:45missing. The gangs have learned to cater for those things. This was

0:50:45 > 0:50:49almost a sheer store between two rival gangs. In the process of that

0:50:49 > 0:50:56a lot of people lost their lives, a lot of shooting and derived bys.

0:50:56 > 0:50:59Well now spends most of his nights out on the streets trying to stop

0:50:59 > 0:51:05conflicts from happening are getting out of control.Corner to corner,

0:51:05 > 0:51:10communicating with those who are always out.And for the May or it

0:51:10 > 0:51:18also personal. Then this quiet street as her former family home.My

0:51:18 > 0:51:21grandmother was a registered nurse and she worked overnight, and her

0:51:21 > 0:51:29schedule was a little bit different. There was a home intrusion and

0:51:29 > 0:51:32someone raped and murdered her. The loss of life is not a moment in

0:51:32 > 0:51:37time, it is for a lifetime, and holes are created that can never be

0:51:37 > 0:51:42filled. It gives me a level of compassion and respect and even

0:51:42 > 0:51:45insight and perspective into what most people are dealing with in my

0:51:45 > 0:51:52community.They may's story is not uncommon. There is a level of

0:51:52 > 0:51:55post-traumatic stress in this town that comes from decades of extreme

0:51:55 > 0:52:01violence. But maybe it is that she had experienced that could also

0:52:01 > 0:52:06drive people to end the violence.

0:52:06 > 0:52:08The Australian Prime Minister has banned Ministers -

0:52:08 > 0:52:10married or single - from having sex with their staff.

0:52:10 > 0:52:12Malcolm Turnbull announced an overhaul to Ministerial standards

0:52:12 > 0:52:14today - saying they're now out of date.

0:52:14 > 0:52:18Lets hear a bit of what he said earlier.

0:52:22 > 0:52:29I am saying that from today this changes being made in a way that is

0:52:29 > 0:52:36very clear, couldn't be clearer. I put this as a bright line and I am

0:52:36 > 0:52:44saying that in these workplaces, and ministers' officers, ministers must

0:52:44 > 0:52:50behave accordingly, and they don't care whether they are married or

0:52:50 > 0:52:54single. I don't care. They must not have sexual relationships with their

0:52:54 > 0:52:55staff. That is it.

0:52:55 > 0:52:58The crackdown comes amid a scandal involving his deputy -

0:52:58 > 0:52:59this man, Barnaby Joyce.

0:52:59 > 0:53:02He's under growing pressure to resign after admitting to having

0:53:02 > 0:53:06an affair with his former staffer.

0:53:06 > 0:53:08She's pregnant with his child.

0:53:08 > 0:53:12Joyce has since split with his wife of 24 years -

0:53:12 > 0:53:16and is in a relationship with his former employee.

0:53:16 > 0:53:17Let's show you this.

0:53:17 > 0:53:19Let me show you this tweet.

0:53:19 > 0:53:21A cartoonist compares it to a more famous sex scandal.

0:53:21 > 0:53:23'One thing for sure- Barnaby Joyce cannot adopt

0:53:23 > 0:53:25the Bill Clinton defence that he did not have sexual

0:53:25 > 0:53:28relations with that woman'.

0:53:28 > 0:53:30And this is his depiction - a pregnant woman, and

0:53:30 > 0:53:36a politician facing the boot.

0:53:39 > 0:53:42Well, Buzzfeed is calling the Prime Minister's new rule

0:53:42 > 0:53:45the Barnaby bonk ban.

0:53:45 > 0:53:51That hashtag, as well as 'barnaby gate' is trending.

0:53:51 > 0:53:54And check out this - the front page of the Age today.

0:53:54 > 0:53:56That headline - Malcolm Turnbull's first commandment.

0:53:56 > 0:54:01Lets get more now from Hywel Griffith in Sydney.

0:54:06 > 0:54:10This announcement came at the end of a pretty long and scathing statement

0:54:10 > 0:54:15by the Prime Minister about his deputy, Barnaby Joyce, who threw a

0:54:15 > 0:54:19week has been hitting the headlines in Australia, particularly because

0:54:19 > 0:54:24of his extramarital affair with his former adviser, a woman who is now

0:54:24 > 0:54:30expecting his child in April. This had apparently been a bit of an open

0:54:30 > 0:54:34secret with questions raised about the potential misuse of public money

0:54:34 > 0:54:39and misconduct by Barnaby Joyce, allegations he denies, but he has

0:54:39 > 0:54:44been in the full glare of the media spotlight for more than seven days,

0:54:44 > 0:54:48admitting to this are feared and apologising for the hurt he has

0:54:48 > 0:54:52caused, but according to Malcolm Turnbull he has had a shocking error

0:54:52 > 0:54:56of judgment and has put his wife and daughters and member of staff

0:54:56 > 0:55:01through a world of wall, according to the Prime Minister. That is the

0:55:01 > 0:55:03background to this ban, but whether or not it will make any difference

0:55:03 > 0:55:10to Barnaby Joyce, we will wait and see. He has announced he will take a

0:55:10 > 0:55:15week's leave next week, and was due to step in for the Prime Minister

0:55:15 > 0:55:18but it will no longer take place. Something of a punishment but there

0:55:18 > 0:55:23are plenty calling for him to resign because of his fear the against him.

0:55:23 > 0:55:32We are back Monday next week, thanks for watching.
