0:00:09 > 0:00:11Hello, I'm Kasia Madera, this is Outside Source.

0:00:15 > 0:00:20the first break for the rebel stronghold.

0:00:20 > 0:00:22Britain's Labour leader Jeremy Corbyn sets out his vision

0:00:23 > 0:00:24Jeremy Corbyn sets out his vision

0:00:24 > 0:00:27for trade post Brexit - calling for the UK to form

0:00:27 > 0:00:28a new customs union with the EU.

0:00:28 > 0:00:32It could spell trouble for Theresa May's strategy.

0:00:32 > 0:00:35The Beast from the East blows into Europe -

0:00:35 > 0:00:39temperatures are falling and so is the snow.

0:00:39 > 0:00:41And Donald Trump faces criticism over his proposal to arm teachers.

0:00:41 > 0:00:51We'll hear from Anthony Zurcher in Washington.

0:01:03 > 0:01:06Welcome to Outside Source...

0:01:06 > 0:01:09we start the programme in Syria.

0:01:09 > 0:01:11Russia has announced it will establish a humanitarian

0:01:11 > 0:01:17corridor out of the Syrian rebel enclave of Eastern Ghouta.

0:01:17 > 0:01:19The Damascus suburb of Eastern Ghouta has endured one

0:01:19 > 0:01:21of heaviest bombardments of the Syrian civil war,

0:01:21 > 0:01:30hundreds of people have been killed in the last eight days.

0:01:30 > 0:01:33Russia says the ceasefire will be in place from 9am to 2pm, every day,

0:01:33 > 0:01:35across Eastern Ghouta, starting on Tuesday

0:01:35 > 0:01:37and a "humanitarian corridor" will be created to allow

0:01:37 > 0:01:43civilians to leave.

0:01:43 > 0:01:47The US, rights groups and Syrian media have

0:01:47 > 0:01:50said Russian planes have carried out the air strikes on Eastern Ghouta,

0:01:50 > 0:01:54including on hospitals.

0:01:54 > 0:01:56What medical clinics are left in the area have been overwhelmed

0:01:56 > 0:02:00by wounded civilians and have very few supplies left.

0:02:00 > 0:02:03Let's hear a little from some of the injured on the ground -

0:02:04 > 0:02:13and the doctors treating them.

0:02:14 > 0:02:19My brother-in-law came in, and in the missile from the plane hit. I

0:02:19 > 0:02:24didn't feel anything, my son, nine years old, gone. We want this ordeal

0:02:24 > 0:02:28to end. Our people are simple people, they are exhausted. They

0:02:28 > 0:02:32just want a bite to eat, they don't want anything. We don't want

0:02:32 > 0:02:35anything more, stop the wars, stop all the destruction against my

0:02:35 > 0:02:42people.TRANSLATION:In the hospitals of Eastern Ghouta we are

0:02:42 > 0:02:47suffering from an extreme shortage of medical needs. We receive ten to

0:02:47 > 0:02:5120 people at once and our staff are exhausted. The nine days the

0:02:51 > 0:02:54escalation has been night and day and the staff have been working

0:02:54 > 0:02:57nonstop. There has been no calm whatsoever, there hasn't even been

0:02:57 > 0:03:02time to catch 1's breath. The blood is flowing, the hospitals are

0:03:02 > 0:03:07overflowing with patients and there is no place to evacuate them.Voices

0:03:07 > 0:03:11of some of those still trapped.

0:03:11 > 0:03:13Earlier, I spoke to Mahmoud Ali Hamad from BBC Arabic about

0:03:13 > 0:03:16the humanitarian corridor, and what it means for the people

0:03:16 > 0:03:19of eastern Ghouta.

0:03:19 > 0:03:23If you look at what the Russians are trying to achieve, it is similar to

0:03:23 > 0:03:28what they have done over a year ago in Aleppo, where they attempted to

0:03:28 > 0:03:34retake the city on behalf of Assad's regime. At the latter stage of that

0:03:34 > 0:03:39procedure meant, and after days of bombardment, basically carpet

0:03:39 > 0:03:45bombing the whole areas, they would announce in cooperation with the

0:03:45 > 0:03:52Syrian regime for the opening of corridors, and that would allow

0:03:52 > 0:03:56civilians should they choose to meet those pockets and enclaves where

0:03:56 > 0:04:02they have been stuck since 2013. So I think the Russians are drawn to

0:04:02 > 0:04:10show they are taking measures to minimise the level of, and it did

0:04:10 > 0:04:15not work in Aleppo, and it is hard for it to work in Ghouta. Pooter had

0:04:15 > 0:04:20almost three times the number of civilians we had in Aleppo. Plus in

0:04:20 > 0:04:26Aleppo, people knew that they were going about 50 to 60 kilometres

0:04:26 > 0:04:31away. For Ghouta Buzz McAfee port to accept the Russians terms, getting

0:04:31 > 0:04:38out of Ghouta, and living just behind the gunmen and the armed

0:04:38 > 0:04:42militias, means being displaced 300 kilometres away to the North from

0:04:42 > 0:04:47their home towns and villages. And for them, for at least the people we

0:04:47 > 0:04:53spoke to today, they said we are not prepared to do this, to actually be

0:04:53 > 0:04:56forced to relocate, to be displaced, and this is the only way to save

0:04:56 > 0:04:59your life, they say we are not prepared for this option, because we

0:04:59 > 0:05:04have seen what happened to the civilians of East Aleppo, and for

0:05:04 > 0:05:08East Ghouta, we believe that the Russians have the same fate in

0:05:08 > 0:05:13store. This is the sentiment that we are getting from civilians in the

0:05:13 > 0:05:15East Ghouta. That is part of a problem they are having in actually

0:05:15 > 0:05:20implementing such a plan. Another one is that all those different

0:05:20 > 0:05:25militias working with the Assad regime to basically continue

0:05:25 > 0:05:30besieging East Ghouta, they are composed of different Shia militias,

0:05:30 > 0:05:38and the population of East Ghouta is majority Sunni, so you can imagine

0:05:38 > 0:05:41they went feel comfortable handing themselves over because basically

0:05:41 > 0:05:46they don't know who sounds they will fall into. This is one of the things

0:05:46 > 0:05:50we keep hearing from civilians in Ghouta. They save the seven years

0:05:50 > 0:05:54they wanted to get us, and now it is their chance. No one is going to

0:05:54 > 0:06:00walk to them and we are not going to be received with open arms.

0:06:03 > 0:06:04The leader of Britain's opposition Labour Party, Jeremy Corbyn,

0:06:04 > 0:06:07has backed the UK remaining in a permanent customs union with

0:06:07 > 0:06:12the European Union after Brexit.

0:06:14 > 0:06:17The shift in policy could lead to Labour teaming up with rebels

0:06:17 > 0:06:19in the governing Conservative Party to try to defeat Prime Minister

0:06:19 > 0:06:24Theresa May's Brexit strategy.

0:06:24 > 0:06:27Mr Corbyn was speaking in Coventry in the West Midlands, an important

0:06:27 > 0:06:30centre for the British car industry.

0:06:30 > 0:06:34He said the industry was dependent on components crossing

0:06:34 > 0:06:41borders freely in Europe.

0:06:41 > 0:06:46We've long argued that a customs union is a viable option for the

0:06:46 > 0:06:53final deal. So Labour would seek to negotiate a new, Conference of UK EU

0:06:53 > 0:06:56customs union to ensure there are no tariffs with Europe and to help

0:06:56 > 0:07:06avoid any need whatsoever for a hardboard in Northern Ireland.

0:07:06 > 0:07:11Let's remind ourselves of what a customs union is.

0:07:11 > 0:07:15It's a group of countries with a single set of tariffs

0:07:15 > 0:07:19on goods from outside.

0:07:19 > 0:07:22Within that area goods move freely, without tariffs.

0:07:22 > 0:07:29But member countries cannot do their own separate trade deals,

0:07:29 > 0:07:34they have to be agreed jointly.

0:07:34 > 0:07:36And that's why the UK Government wants to leave it.

0:07:36 > 0:07:39Here's the international trade secretary Liam Fox.

0:07:39 > 0:07:42Remember that only the Bharatiya of Britain's traders with the European

0:07:42 > 0:07:50Union. -- the minority. The IMF estimates that 90% of global trade

0:07:50 > 0:07:54will be outside the European continent, so we have to give

0:07:54 > 0:07:57ourselves the freedom to have the agreements necessary to maximise

0:07:57 > 0:08:02Britain's share of that increased trade because that is where the

0:08:02 > 0:08:06prosperity of the next generation will live.

0:08:06 > 0:08:09On Friday the Prime Minister Theresa May is due to give another speech

0:08:09 > 0:08:11fleshing out what the government wants from Brexit.

0:08:11 > 0:08:14She's expected to say that Britain wants the right to diverge from some

0:08:14 > 0:08:15European standards over time.

0:08:15 > 0:08:17But 20 months after the referendum, everyone

0:08:17 > 0:08:26is still asking for more detail.

0:08:26 > 0:08:30Let's cross over live to Westminster, because my colleagues

0:08:30 > 0:08:35there, Jonathan Blake, is monitoring all of these events. Let's start off

0:08:35 > 0:08:41with what Jeremy Corbyn has been saying. This into context for us?

0:08:41 > 0:08:47What we got today from Jeremy Corbyn was a point, which puts it at a

0:08:47 > 0:08:51distinct different position to the government's. Labour's position on

0:08:51 > 0:08:55Brexit has been evolving, you could say, confused, others would say, for

0:08:55 > 0:09:02some time now, but Jeremy Corbyn, as you heard, stood up and confirmed

0:09:02 > 0:09:07what the party has been strongly hinting about in the recent days and

0:09:07 > 0:09:14weeks, that if it were in government, it will seek to keep the

0:09:14 > 0:09:20United Kingdom in a customs union with the European Union. So they

0:09:20 > 0:09:23were delivered on the referendum and take the UK out of the EU that they

0:09:23 > 0:09:27have a different approach to the Conservative Party who are in

0:09:27 > 0:09:32government and keep the UK in a customs union, whereas the

0:09:32 > 0:09:35government would like to take us out of that particular mechanism. The

0:09:35 > 0:09:41detail is less clear. The charge that has been levied at the

0:09:41 > 0:09:46government time and again is that it is trying to have its cake and eat

0:09:46 > 0:09:50it, take the benefit of being a member of the European Union whilst

0:09:50 > 0:09:54existing outside. Jeremy Corbyn's desertion has two a certain extent

0:09:54 > 0:09:57left the Labour Party open to the same charge because he said whilst

0:09:57 > 0:10:01he would want to keep the UK in a customs union with the European

0:10:01 > 0:10:06Union, he would still want to have influence on negotiating trade

0:10:06 > 0:10:14deals, which would affect the UK's national interest. The European

0:10:14 > 0:10:17Union is likely to say if you are not in the European Union that you

0:10:17 > 0:10:22cannot have a say on trade deals negotiated by the European Union. So

0:10:22 > 0:10:26the big selling point does put Labour in a different place to the

0:10:26 > 0:10:29government, but the detail as to how those positions would work is far

0:10:29 > 0:10:35less clear. We are expecting to hear from Theresa May on Friday. Thank

0:10:35 > 0:10:39you very much, Jonathan Blake in Westminster.

0:10:39 > 0:10:41Donald Trump has been hosting state governors -

0:10:41 > 0:10:45inevitably the topic came back to gun control.

0:10:45 > 0:10:47There is currently a state inquiry into law enforcement's response

0:10:47 > 0:10:49to the school shooting at Marjory Stoneman

0:10:49 > 0:10:50Douglas High School.

0:10:50 > 0:10:58But here's what the president said.

0:10:58 > 0:11:04I got to watch some deputy sheriffs performing this weekend. They

0:11:04 > 0:11:09weren't exactly medal of honour winners, all right. The way they

0:11:09 > 0:11:12performed was frankly disgusting. I really believe, you don't know until

0:11:12 > 0:11:17you test it, but I really believe that if I ran into them, even if I

0:11:17 > 0:11:20didn't have a weapon, and I think most of the people of this remark

0:11:20 > 0:11:23would have done that too.

0:11:23 > 0:11:27Anthony Zurcher in Washington.

0:11:27 > 0:11:31The president really speaking his mind, as per usual.Yes, as per

0:11:31 > 0:11:40usual. Hypothetical heroism is the easiest kind, and Sarah Huckabee

0:11:40 > 0:11:42Sanders the White House press secretary came out afterwards and

0:11:42 > 0:11:45said he wasn't really literally talking about running into the

0:11:45 > 0:11:48building, it was talking about how he would want to take a leadership

0:11:48 > 0:11:55role, and like everyone else, trying to take some sort of a leadership

0:11:55 > 0:11:59role, and contrasting it with what the deputies did or did not do at

0:11:59 > 0:12:05that particular time. I will leave it up to the viewers if that was an

0:12:05 > 0:12:08accurate interpretation of what Donald Trump said. After the

0:12:08 > 0:12:12president spoke of the floor was opened up to the state governors.

0:12:12 > 0:12:15This is what the Washington governor had to say about the proposal to

0:12:15 > 0:12:20armed teachers.I have listened to the first grade teachers who don't

0:12:20 > 0:12:23want to be pistol packing first grade teachers. I have listened to

0:12:23 > 0:12:27law enforcement to have said they don't want to train teachers as law

0:12:27 > 0:12:30enforcement agencies, which takes about six months. I just think this

0:12:30 > 0:12:34is a circumstance where we need to listen, that educators should

0:12:34 > 0:12:38educate and Richard not be foisted upon this squad is ability of

0:12:38 > 0:12:43packing heat in first grade classes. Now I understand you have suggested

0:12:43 > 0:12:46this, and we suggest things sometimes we listen about it, maybe

0:12:46 > 0:12:50they don't look so good a little later, so I just suggest we need a

0:12:50 > 0:12:54little less tweeting here, a little more listening, let's take that off

0:12:54 > 0:12:58the table and move forward. That was the Washington governor addressing

0:12:58 > 0:13:05the president. Anthony, a lot of concern over this concern about

0:13:05 > 0:13:12arming teachers within schools. Right, and the democratic governor

0:13:12 > 0:13:15of Washington, Washington has been one of the state that has been very

0:13:15 > 0:13:19active in opposing some of Donald Trump slack policies, particularly

0:13:19 > 0:13:22in immigration, so it is not surprising to hear their governor

0:13:22 > 0:13:26the very strong in his question of that arming schoolteachers policy.

0:13:26 > 0:13:31We are talking about millions of schoolteachers. Right now about 60%

0:13:31 > 0:13:37of the American public has concealed handgun carry licenses, -- about 6%

0:13:37 > 0:13:44of the American public. It is a massive undertaking. It is not

0:13:44 > 0:13:48surprising to hear some of Donald Trump's critics try to pick that

0:13:48 > 0:13:53apart a bit, although I will note there is a sheriff in Ohio who is

0:13:53 > 0:13:57offering within his county free handgun training for public school

0:13:57 > 0:14:01teachers. He says he already has 300 teachers who have signed up to get

0:14:01 > 0:14:05training, so in some quarters that seems to be a welcome option, a way

0:14:05 > 0:14:09of countering school gun violence. Thank you for putting that into

0:14:09 > 0:14:12context for us.

0:14:12 > 0:14:14Stay with us on Outside Source - still to come...

0:14:14 > 0:14:17The film studio co-founded by disgraced producer

0:14:17 > 0:14:19Harvey Weinstein is to file for bankruptcy; we'll

0:14:19 > 0:14:23have the latest from New York.

0:14:28 > 0:14:31Five people have now died following an explosion at a shop

0:14:31 > 0:14:32in Leicester last night.

0:14:32 > 0:14:34Authorities say it could take some days to establish

0:14:34 > 0:14:37the cause of the blast, and that some people may

0:14:37 > 0:14:44still be unaccounted for.

0:14:48 > 0:14:55Police said the search at the scene will have to continue in Leicester.

0:14:55 > 0:14:57This operation for the emergency services will carry on while there

0:14:57 > 0:15:03is a possibility that someone might be trapped in a void. To give up is

0:15:03 > 0:15:08not correct. Once the thorough job has been completed, the site will be

0:15:08 > 0:15:10secured, made safe and a proper investigation into what happened

0:15:10 > 0:15:14will take place. And EU have knowledge of how many people there

0:15:14 > 0:15:18may still be trapped? Not really, bearing in mind it was a shop

0:15:18 > 0:15:23premises with a flat above, that is why we have been asking all day, it

0:15:23 > 0:15:28someday hasn't seen somebody they expected to see today, please ring

0:15:28 > 0:15:31Leicestershire police and let us know who that person is and as much

0:15:31 > 0:15:35information about them as possible.

0:15:35 > 0:15:38This is Outside Source, live from the BBC newsroom.

0:15:38 > 0:15:40Our lead story is?

0:15:40 > 0:15:42Russia has agreed to a five hour daily ceasefire

0:15:42 > 0:15:46in Syria's Eastern Ghouta starting on Tuesday.

0:15:46 > 0:15:53It'll be the first break for the rebel stronghold.

0:15:53 > 0:15:56BBC Arabic report that Saudi Arabia has opened applications for women

0:15:56 > 0:15:59to join its military.

0:15:59 > 0:16:01Women have until Thursday to apply for positions

0:16:01 > 0:16:03with the rank of soldier.

0:16:03 > 0:16:06The decision is one of many reforms enhancing women's rights

0:16:06 > 0:16:15in the conservative Muslim kingdom.

0:16:15 > 0:16:19A dangerous attempt at to summit Pakistan's K2 mountain in the winter

0:16:19 > 0:16:25has been aborted. A Russian attempt of the solo attempt after he argued

0:16:25 > 0:16:29with the rest of the expedition. He then set out a loan before turning

0:16:29 > 0:16:33back a day later. And a lot of people online have been reading

0:16:33 > 0:16:39about the global shortage in raisins. It is caused by a drop in

0:16:39 > 0:16:44production in California. The UK is hit hard. It is the biggest importer

0:16:44 > 0:16:46of dried fruit, but don't be too concerned. This current shortage has

0:16:46 > 0:16:51come too late to affect the cost of hot cross buns, for this year, at

0:16:51 > 0:16:58least. Let's bring you up-to-date with the Outside Source business

0:16:58 > 0:16:59news.

0:16:59 > 0:17:02Reports suggest that Harvey Weinstein's New York film studio -

0:17:02 > 0:17:04the Weinstein company - looks set to file for bankruptcy.

0:17:04 > 0:17:07Several media outlets say that talks to sell some of the business'

0:17:07 > 0:17:10assets have broken down.

0:17:10 > 0:17:16Joe Miller is in New York.

0:17:16 > 0:17:22So they couldn't find a buyer?No, they couldn't. In fact, this looks

0:17:22 > 0:17:26like it's the end of the road for the Weinstein company first let's

0:17:26 > 0:17:32talk you through what happened here, after dozens of allegations of

0:17:32 > 0:17:35sexual harassment surfaced in October, the company got rid of

0:17:35 > 0:17:40Harvey Weinstein and tried to wind down and find a buyer. That wasn't

0:17:40 > 0:17:43too easy. Eventually it found a conglomerate that was adjusted in

0:17:43 > 0:17:48buying it for about $500 million, and that look like it was going

0:17:48 > 0:17:54ahead, until an extraordinary intervention by the New York

0:17:54 > 0:17:59Attorney General a couple of weeks ago, and he filed a civil rights

0:17:59 > 0:18:03lawsuit, saying he didn't want this deal to go ahead unless there were

0:18:03 > 0:18:07assurances that the people who are allegedly involved in this sexual

0:18:07 > 0:18:11harassment, or involved in covering it up, would not benefit from the

0:18:11 > 0:18:16sale, and that the employees, some of whom were victims of the alleged

0:18:16 > 0:18:18harassment, would keep their jobs. It looked like both parties could

0:18:18 > 0:18:23not agree this would happen, and therefore the Weinstein Company is

0:18:23 > 0:18:30saying it has no choice but to file for bankruptcy.Another story we

0:18:30 > 0:18:34want to have a look at. According to this particular tweet, which

0:18:34 > 0:18:37suggests there are quite a few people out there who are lying about

0:18:37 > 0:18:43owning Bitcoin, I guess weather status or something. 50 cents admits

0:18:43 > 0:18:52he has never owned and is not now own any Bitcoin. What is going on?

0:18:52 > 0:18:57The latest hilarity in the 50 cents bankruptcy proceedings. 50 cents,

0:18:57 > 0:19:02the rapper, also known as Curtis James Jackson said, he has been

0:19:02 > 0:19:05filing for bankruptcy for a while. The court has essentially asked him

0:19:05 > 0:19:11to prove that the wealthy flaunts on social media is not real. -- 50

0:19:11 > 0:19:20Cent. First he had to defend Instagram posts that his lawyers

0:19:20 > 0:19:24said were fake money. Now we have the filings that say that 50 cents,

0:19:24 > 0:19:30who had been bragging about making 8 million in Bitcoin from one of his

0:19:30 > 0:19:34albums in 2014 actually made nothing. He says, so long as a press

0:19:34 > 0:19:39story is not irreparably damaging to my image or brand I usually do not

0:19:39 > 0:19:42feel the need to publicly deny the reporting, so in other words he

0:19:42 > 0:19:47thought that owning Bitcoin or looking like he did, was good for

0:19:47 > 0:19:50his brand, and when news organisation started reporting that

0:19:50 > 0:19:53committee kept quiet, but apparently, according to this

0:19:53 > 0:20:00filing, he never did own any of it. Thank you, Joe Miller in New York,

0:20:00 > 0:20:05as always. Let's keep the news on the OS business news. Here is a

0:20:05 > 0:20:08question to you, would you like to know when a recession is coming? It

0:20:08 > 0:20:19could be simple. How many women are pregnant? It could suggest that the

0:20:19 > 0:20:21rate of women becoming pregnant tends to fall seven months before

0:20:21 > 0:20:28the start of a recession. Our business reporter explained it to

0:20:28 > 0:20:32us.We are looking for certain data points that might give us a centre

0:20:32 > 0:20:36for what happened in the future, why they are related, who is to say.

0:20:36 > 0:20:39They are correlated but not necessarily causing the thing

0:20:39 > 0:20:44happening. This particular bit of research looked at 109 million birth

0:20:44 > 0:20:48records, and found that since 1988 there have been big recessions in

0:20:48 > 0:20:51the US, three of them, and almost six months before them, you could

0:20:51 > 0:20:55see fewer women were getting pregnant. That is the sort of

0:20:55 > 0:20:57interesting data point they are looking here. Maybe you are sitting

0:20:57 > 0:21:01down with your partner at the table, trying to figure out what the future

0:21:01 > 0:21:11will look like for you. Do you want to bring a child into the world? If

0:21:11 > 0:21:14you do, you are optimistic about the future, so the idea is you might not

0:21:14 > 0:21:17have lost your job yet, or got that promised bonus, but you're not

0:21:17 > 0:21:20really do this together at getting it, so you will put off having a kid

0:21:20 > 0:21:21in the hopes that things might improve.

0:21:21 > 0:21:31If you have an opinion on that, you know where to get in touch. The

0:21:31 > 0:21:35smartphone event is underway in Barcelona, the Mobile world

0:21:35 > 0:21:39Congress. Global sales of smartphones fell by over 5% in the

0:21:39 > 0:21:47last three months of 2017. In the battle to be another one, Samsung is

0:21:47 > 0:21:55still beating Apple, selling over 80% of all -- 18% of all handsets

0:21:55 > 0:21:59last quarter. Apple were second, and this is the interesting part of this

0:21:59 > 0:22:05story. Rounding off the top five phone makers were three Chinese

0:22:05 > 0:22:16companies, Huawei. Rory Cellan-Jones explains what is going on.I think

0:22:16 > 0:22:19what has happened over the last few years is people for Chinese

0:22:19 > 0:22:24companies, they are just going to be in the Chinese market. That is a

0:22:24 > 0:22:27huge market, plenty for them to play at that, but they are showing here

0:22:27 > 0:22:33in Barcelona that that is not enough of them. Huawei in particular have a

0:22:33 > 0:22:36huge presence here, a vast stand, and they say they are probably about

0:22:36 > 0:22:39number three in the world right now and they have ambitions to be number

0:22:39 > 0:22:43one. I went and visited them five years ago when they were just

0:22:43 > 0:22:46getting into smartphones. Their ambition seemed unlikely. They said

0:22:46 > 0:22:50they would be number three by now, they have kind of done it, so don't

0:22:50 > 0:22:55count them out.

0:22:55 > 0:23:02Europe is in the grips of a deep freeze.

0:23:02 > 0:23:04And it's because of this, a bitterly cold front, dubbed

0:23:04 > 0:23:06the "beast from the east", that is sweeping arctic

0:23:06 > 0:23:08air from Siberia right across the continent.

0:23:08 > 0:23:11It's expected to continue having a big impact in the coming days -

0:23:11 > 0:23:16bringing sub-zero temperatures to many regions.

0:23:16 > 0:23:19Here in the UK, it's sent temperatures plummeting.

0:23:19 > 0:23:22These are some of the key pictures that have come into the BBC

0:23:22 > 0:23:25newsroom from across the country.

0:23:25 > 0:23:29Snow has been falling in many areas, including London.

0:23:29 > 0:23:32It's disrupted some public transport services, and caused dangerous

0:23:32 > 0:23:35conditions on the roads.

0:23:35 > 0:23:38If things pan out the way they're predicted to,

0:23:38 > 0:23:42it could be Britain's coldest spell since 1991.

0:23:42 > 0:23:46This is Rome.

0:23:46 > 0:23:49Residents of the Italian capital woke to a rare blanketing of snow.

0:23:49 > 0:23:57It's the coldest weather they've had in six years.

0:23:57 > 0:24:00There's always someone making the most of it.

0:24:00 > 0:24:03This is St Peter's Square in the Vatican.

0:24:03 > 0:24:08Priests among the many joining in the fun of a snowball fight.

0:24:08 > 0:24:13And this weather it hasn't been putting off

0:24:13 > 0:24:18the brave in Germany.

0:24:18 > 0:24:23These are swimmers taking to an outdoor pool in Munich.

0:24:23 > 0:24:25That's despite the temperature dropping to around minus ten degrees

0:24:25 > 0:24:35celsius in the area.

0:24:35 > 0:24:39It is not over yet, these are warnings that are in place across

0:24:39 > 0:24:45the UK, across all of these regions. Yellow regions indicating that the

0:24:45 > 0:24:49weather is possible to go really, really cold. Let's get a full update

0:24:49 > 0:24:51from Nick Miller.

0:24:54 > 0:24:57Widespread cold air across much of Europe. You may have heard about

0:24:57 > 0:25:01sudden stratospheric warming. The result of that, what goes on high in

0:25:01 > 0:25:05the atmosphere, is what we are seeing right now across Europe. You

0:25:05 > 0:25:09can see all the Blues here, the cold air spreading from Siberia, from

0:25:09 > 0:25:13Russia, across much of mainland Europe and into the United Kingdom,

0:25:13 > 0:25:18and with that blue, with that very, very cold air, the source region for

0:25:18 > 0:25:22the air, to badgers have fallen as low as -40 Celsius, there are many

0:25:22 > 0:25:25places that will see snow over the next few days. -- temperatures have

0:25:25 > 0:25:32fallen. Significantly the relations of snow in places. It is stormy

0:25:32 > 0:25:35through the Mediterranean, a lot of the white showing up will be falling

0:25:35 > 0:25:38the white showing up will be falling as heavy snow. There are not many

0:25:38 > 0:25:40places immune from seeing significant snow as we go through

0:25:40 > 0:25:44the rest of the week, because this cold air is hanging around. It is in

0:25:44 > 0:25:48no hurry to move away and we will potentially see at the end of the

0:25:48 > 0:25:51week an even bigger weather system heading towards the British Isles

0:25:51 > 0:25:54with significant disruptive snow.

0:25:55 > 0:26:03It is one of the coldest, snowiest periods we have seen across Europe.

0:26:03 > 0:26:08It is one of the coldest, snowiest periods we have seen across Europe.

0:26:13 > 0:26:17We start our round-up in North America, where the planes of the US

0:26:17 > 0:26:19and the Mississippi Valley have played host to some very heavy

0:26:19 > 0:26:25rainfall through the weekend. In fact, the Ohio river, the biggest

0:26:25 > 0:26:28victory of the Mississippi river, it does mean we have had extensive

0:26:28 > 0:26:33flood alerts issued. Since that it was on moderate alert, with the

0:26:33 > 0:26:37levels reaching 65 foot. Anything above 59th that will trigger those

0:26:37 > 0:26:43alerts, but almost all communities adjacent to the Ohio river have been

0:26:43 > 0:26:46on alert. Water is continuing to recede through Tuesday as high

0:26:46 > 0:26:54pressure builds. Our hire can only hang on for so long here, because we

0:26:54 > 0:26:58will see the showers developing across is to parts of Texas on

0:26:58 > 0:27:00Tuesday, and eventually coming together in a more well formed

0:27:00 > 0:27:06weather system, which then is going to push its way further north latest

0:27:06 > 0:27:09Tuesday, but particularly on into Wednesday. It tracks all the way

0:27:09 > 0:27:15across the plains, along with some southerly winds, and will push more

0:27:15 > 0:27:19heavy rain into Ohio on Wednesday. This story far from over. New

0:27:19 > 0:27:22Zealand saw some very heavy rainfall through the weekend. 300 millimetres

0:27:22 > 0:27:25in just the space of Saturday falling across part of the North

0:27:25 > 0:27:31Ireland. Again, an ongoing story here, New Zealand has been hit by

0:27:31 > 0:27:35many areas of low pressure in recent weeks, and if we take a look at the

0:27:35 > 0:27:39latest satellite picture, we can see another one here queueing up and the

0:27:39 > 0:27:44Tasman Sea. It will bring a spell of strong winds, yes, but more

0:27:44 > 0:27:46importantly through the course of Wednesday it will be the heavy rain

0:27:46 > 0:27:50once again that affect the south island. We can take a little bit of

0:27:50 > 0:27:53closer picture for Wednesday. Auckland has had the worst of the

0:27:53 > 0:27:57rain but further south that system covering a good part of the south

0:27:57 > 0:28:02island through the data stop a little bit closer to home now, let's

0:28:02 > 0:28:10head across to Europe, where the cold continues. Sunday night, parts

0:28:10 > 0:28:12of northern Russia, -41 Celsius but even closer to home across

0:28:12 > 0:28:17Scandinavia, low as as low as -35 in Sweden and Norway, and that is where

0:28:17 > 0:28:21we are pulling our air from at the moment. All the way across this

0:28:21 > 0:28:25really right the way down into southern Europe, that cold air

0:28:25 > 0:28:29spreading, blasting out into the Atlantic too. Meeting up with

0:28:29 > 0:28:32slightly warmer air across the warmer waters of the Mediterranean,

0:28:32 > 0:28:35cooking up some pretty nasty low-pressure systems here for the

0:28:35 > 0:28:39next few days and stop some strong winds and heavy snowfall Romania,

0:28:39 > 0:28:43heavy rain to Turkey, and look at this mess across Portugal, Spain and

0:28:43 > 0:28:47the South of France on Wednesday. Further north, the easterly winds

0:28:47 > 0:28:51continue to blast from Siberia. Plentiful snow showers in the

0:28:51 > 0:28:54forecast Scandinavia and also for the UK and a significant wind-chill

0:28:54 > 0:28:59as well. As ever, I will leave my colleague to give you more details

0:28:59 > 0:29:02on that in just half an hour.

0:30:12 > 0:30:15Hello, this is Outside Source, and these are the main stories

0:30:15 > 0:30:16here in the BBC Newsroom.

0:30:16 > 0:30:19Russia agrees to a daily five-hour ceasefire in Syria's Eastern Ghouta.

0:30:19 > 0:30:20It'll start on Tuesday -

0:30:20 > 0:30:22the first break for the rebel stronghold.

0:30:22 > 0:30:24Britain's Labour leader Jeremy Corbyn sets out his vision

0:30:24 > 0:30:27for trade post Brexit, calling for the UK to form

0:30:27 > 0:30:30a new customs union with the EU.

0:30:30 > 0:30:34It could spell trouble for Theresa May's strategy.

0:30:34 > 0:30:36Every day, Outside Source features BBC journalists

0:30:36 > 0:30:40working in over 30 languages.

0:30:40 > 0:30:41Your questions are always welcome.

0:30:41 > 0:30:50#BBCOS is the hashtag

0:31:01 > 0:31:04It's six months since Hurricane Harvey hit Texas,

0:31:04 > 0:31:10killing 68 people and forcing more than 40,000 to flee their homes.

0:31:10 > 0:31:15More than 60 inches of rain fell, causing devastating flooding.

0:31:15 > 0:31:18Laura Trevelyan reported from Houston on the impact

0:31:18 > 0:31:21of Harvey last August, and has returned to find out how

0:31:21 > 0:31:31people made homeless by the ferocious storm are faring.

0:31:31 > 0:31:33Houston underwater. This was the catastrophic flooding caused by

0:31:33 > 0:31:40hurricane Harvey. As record rainfall saturated the city, again using

0:31:40 > 0:31:48neighbourhoods and turning lives upside down. It's an emotional

0:31:48 > 0:31:53moment for Gloria, clutching Snoopy as she shows where she was rescued

0:31:53 > 0:32:01from as the floodwaters rose.It was devastating. I just couldn't believe

0:32:01 > 0:32:06it. I look at it and it is still hard. Her home of over 20 years is

0:32:06 > 0:32:10uninhabitable, and she didn't have flood insurance, like thousands of

0:32:10 > 0:32:17others in Houston. Now she is living in a hotel, paid for by the federal

0:32:17 > 0:32:20emergency management agency, but she doesn't feel safe.I have to

0:32:20 > 0:32:24barricade myself in here every night because there is so much going on

0:32:24 > 0:32:32out there. Prostitution every night, guys driving by one night, shooting

0:32:32 > 0:32:38eight times towards this hotel. I had to get on the floor. What impact

0:32:38 > 0:32:42as it had on you personally, being out of your house for these past six

0:32:42 > 0:32:48months?I'm on medicine for depression, I have got to the point

0:32:48 > 0:32:56where I really wanted to die, and asked God to take me home.

0:32:56 > 0:33:00Volunteers from a Houston charity are helping rebuild Gloria's home.

0:33:00 > 0:33:04Hopefully she can return in March. Mother nature did what she did and

0:33:04 > 0:33:09we are helping people recover as best we can.Federal officials are

0:33:09 > 0:33:13trying to help families like Gloria's get back home.People do

0:33:13 > 0:33:20expect someone to fix it. Our role is not bad. We want to help

0:33:20 > 0:33:24everybody in every way we can as quickly as we can but in doing that

0:33:24 > 0:33:27we also have to be mindful of the taxpayer dollars that we are

0:33:27 > 0:33:35spending.Here is how this suburb looked in August. The neighbourhood

0:33:35 > 0:33:37was deliberately submerged, as officials let water out of the

0:33:37 > 0:33:41nearby reservoir to stop it overflowing. Dan and Virginia did

0:33:41 > 0:33:46not have flood insurance, and are still trying to rebuild.Six months

0:33:46 > 0:33:53on, we're not home yet. We vacillate between saying, do we want to be in

0:33:53 > 0:33:57this house or do we want to start over somewhere else?I describe it

0:33:57 > 0:34:02as a roller-coaster of emotion. It was the horror of being flooded,

0:34:02 > 0:34:07being a house with two small children and a new dog, and the

0:34:07 > 0:34:11craziness of the last six months, trying to rebuild your life.As

0:34:11 > 0:34:17Houston recovers from the impact of Harvey, the next Tara came season is

0:34:17 > 0:34:21only four months away. This is a sprawling coastal city, with bayous

0:34:21 > 0:34:24like this which I won a ball to flooding. So is anything being done

0:34:24 > 0:34:33to protect Houston against future hurricanes. It did not disconnect as

0:34:33 > 0:34:39to whether you work for otherwise, the floodwaters came and you were

0:34:39 > 0:34:44adversely affected. The mayor knows all too well how exposed to city is.

0:34:44 > 0:34:49Rejecting it is a long-term project. It is important for the city to take

0:34:49 > 0:34:55steps towards mitigating flooding. Why use need to be expanded, there

0:34:55 > 0:35:02needs to be more retention places put in place. That is the full

0:35:02 > 0:35:08comfort for Gloria, still waiting to go home, traumatised by the

0:35:08 > 0:35:17flooding. Hurricane Harvey destroyed homes and lives. Houston's

0:35:17 > 0:35:24rebounding, but the road to recovery is a long one.

0:35:24 > 0:35:25Russia has announced it will establish a humanitarian

0:35:25 > 0:35:32corridor out of the Syrian rebel enclave of Eastern Ghouta.

0:35:32 > 0:35:33The Damascus suburb of Eastern Ghouta has endured

0:35:33 > 0:35:37one of the heaviest bombardments of the Syrian civil war -

0:35:37 > 0:35:39hundreds of people have been killed in the last eight days.

0:35:39 > 0:35:43Russia says the ceasefire will be in place from 9am to 2pm every day,

0:35:43 > 0:35:47across Eastern Ghouta, starting on Tuesday

0:35:47 > 0:35:51and a "humanitarian corridor" will be created

0:35:51 > 0:36:00to allow civilians to leave.

0:36:00 > 0:36:05With me is Lyse Doucet, our chief international correspondent.

0:36:05 > 0:36:09You know this area, you have been there before. The conditions that

0:36:09 > 0:36:15people there are suffering under our unimaginable. The UN

0:36:15 > 0:36:18Secretary-General called it hell on earth, where you have nearly 400,000

0:36:18 > 0:36:23people who have been besieged, encircled in that suburb of Damascus

0:36:23 > 0:36:29since 2013. In the last eight or nine days, they have seen some of

0:36:29 > 0:36:34the heaviest bombardment since this war began. There is also the impact

0:36:34 > 0:36:38and pressure on the people of Damascus, who have had barrages of

0:36:38 > 0:36:45missiles, mortars fired from the rebel groups who are based in that

0:36:45 > 0:36:47enclave, and it is for that reason that Russia and the Syrian

0:36:47 > 0:36:51government are saying that this is not a Germanic Terry and crisis as

0:36:51 > 0:36:57many in the world are saying, it is a battle against terrorism. -- it is

0:36:57 > 0:37:00not a humanitarian crisis

0:37:00 > 0:37:05a battle against terrorism. -- it is not a humanitarian crisis.There are

0:37:05 > 0:37:11many saying that the corridor will not allow things to come through.

0:37:11 > 0:37:15People have to decide to leave through the corridor, that is the

0:37:15 > 0:37:22thing we saw in Aleppo in 2016. Russia and the Syrian government

0:37:22 > 0:37:26also offered these corridors, many people didn't leave because they

0:37:26 > 0:37:31were afraid of the consequences if they did. They didn't have anywhere

0:37:31 > 0:37:37to go, so they decided to stay where they were. In some cases in Aleppo,

0:37:37 > 0:37:42rebel groups stopped people from leaving. More than a year on, there

0:37:42 > 0:37:47is even more people living in this area, they are more afraid about

0:37:47 > 0:37:52leaving because they have nowhere to go, they don't want to be

0:37:52 > 0:37:55transported to a distant province where they have no family, no

0:37:55 > 0:38:00relatives, no one to seek refuge with. Also they don't know what the

0:38:00 > 0:38:06rebel groups are and what their goals are, and if they are going to

0:38:06 > 0:38:09stop people from leaving. We will have to wait and see if people will

0:38:09 > 0:38:17take advantage of the corridor. It is meant to be safe, will it be?Are

0:38:17 > 0:38:20you convinced, confident that there will be eight is fired during those

0:38:20 > 0:38:28five hours? There will not be a ceasefire as we know it, because

0:38:28 > 0:38:34Russia has said time and again that certain groups will not be included.

0:38:34 > 0:38:43It is also excluding partners of groups like Al-Qaeda, which gives

0:38:43 > 0:38:49them a licence to keep fighting. We have heard the same message from the

0:38:49 > 0:38:55Syrian government as well. How will this compare to what happened in

0:38:55 > 0:38:59Aleppo?Each situation is different. This is up particular concern for

0:38:59 > 0:39:13the Government because it is on the edge of Damascus. It also comes at a

0:39:13 > 0:39:18time when they want to finish it off, they want to take this area.

0:39:18 > 0:39:25There is a real determination to try to continue to push out the rebels.

0:39:25 > 0:39:30There were intense discussion to some of the rebel groups. The

0:39:30 > 0:39:33Government made it clear that they would not negotiate with the

0:39:33 > 0:39:42hardline linked to Al-Qaeda. In some cases, the rebels refused to leave,

0:39:42 > 0:39:49and this is what happened. Thank you.

0:39:49 > 0:39:52Don't forget you can get much more detail on our top stories

0:40:02 > 0:40:07One week ago, 110 Nigerian schoolgirls were abducted

0:40:07 > 0:40:12from a town in Yobay state called Dapchi.

0:40:12 > 0:40:17It has taken a week to have that confirmed -

0:40:17 > 0:40:22at first, the state government said the girls were simply "missing".

0:40:22 > 0:40:25This is what is left of the school.

0:40:25 > 0:40:27This was the classroom.

0:40:27 > 0:40:30It's now empty, but last Monday students and teachers

0:40:30 > 0:40:32were running to bushes nearby

0:40:32 > 0:40:39as Boko Haram militants stormed the school.

0:40:39 > 0:40:41Katalla Bukar's 14-year-old daughter Aisha is among the missing girls.

0:40:41 > 0:40:51He's begging the Nigerian government to act quickly.

0:40:54 > 0:41:01TRANSLATION:As of now, we are disturbed because it is Monday and

0:41:01 > 0:41:06the children have spent seven days with those militants. They have

0:41:06 > 0:41:11never experienced such a thing in. Until this moment, there are no

0:41:11 > 0:41:14hints about their whereabouts was the buying here to speak on behalf

0:41:14 > 0:41:20of the fathers of the abducted girls stop no more, no less, we need

0:41:20 > 0:41:23maximum contribution of every camp in the world. We also need the help

0:41:23 > 0:41:29from the state and federal government to help because they have

0:41:29 > 0:41:33not experienced this will stop I know they were abducted by militants

0:41:33 > 0:41:36and where ever they are now they are mentally affected because the oldest

0:41:36 > 0:41:40among them is only 20 years old. I can't explain further because I am

0:41:40 > 0:41:44not with them. Both the state and federal covered have said they will

0:41:44 > 0:41:49bring them back soon. We are in a bad situation. Me and the family are

0:41:49 > 0:41:53in a bad situation.

0:41:53 > 0:41:55His anger is felt by many of the parents.

0:41:55 > 0:41:57They want answers over reports

0:41:57 > 0:42:00that soldiers withdrew from checkpoints in the town.

0:42:00 > 0:42:02Some of them are angry that the military had claimed

0:42:02 > 0:42:07to have defeated Boko Haram in the area just last month.

0:42:07 > 0:42:10Nigeria's President has apologised and declared a national disaster.

0:42:10 > 0:42:16His information minister said, "We want to assure Nigerians

0:42:16 > 0:42:18that no stone will be left unturned in our determination

0:42:18 > 0:42:23to rescue these girls."

0:42:23 > 0:42:28It's not surprising that these kidnappings

0:42:28 > 0:42:29are being compared to the abductions in Chibok,

0:42:29 > 0:42:31a town that's only 300 kilometres away.

0:42:31 > 0:42:34UNICEF says, "We have not forgotten the tragedy of the Chibok girls

0:42:34 > 0:42:36from four years ago, when 276 girls were abducted

0:42:36 > 0:42:38by Boko Haram militants."

0:42:38 > 0:42:44Still, large number of the girls have not returned.

0:42:44 > 0:42:45And now this.

0:42:45 > 0:42:54These figures from UNICEF show the dangers faced by teachers -

0:42:54 > 0:42:56over 2,000 teachers have been killed by Boko Haram

0:42:56 > 0:43:02and 1,400 schools destroyed since 2009.

0:43:02 > 0:43:08Our correspondent, Stephanie Hegarty, is in Lagos.

0:43:12 > 0:43:16It seems that finally the Government is starting to take control, to step

0:43:16 > 0:43:20up their efforts to find the girls. They said they deployed all of the

0:43:20 > 0:43:24airpower they can, they have surveillance aircraft monitoring the

0:43:24 > 0:43:29region. But it is a week later and many parents are still angry and

0:43:29 > 0:43:34confused about how the federal government is dealing with this. We

0:43:34 > 0:43:40have had comparisons to what happened with the kidnapping in

0:43:40 > 0:43:442014, lots of people criticising the Government and saying they did not

0:43:44 > 0:43:46learn anything from that incident. At least this time we have an

0:43:46 > 0:43:51acknowledgement that this has happened, and we have some movement,

0:43:51 > 0:43:55although it has been slow, from the Government to try and find the girls

0:43:55 > 0:43:58stop the big question is, why won't the school is being protected by the

0:43:58 > 0:44:06Army? The governor was angry at the military for pulling out from a

0:44:06 > 0:44:13checkpoint and week before. There has been much criticism of that. The

0:44:13 > 0:44:18army said in their defence that they can't man every single school, every

0:44:18 > 0:44:23single village in the entire region. But this was a big school, close to

0:44:23 > 0:44:281000 students, so lots of people were asking why it was not a

0:44:28 > 0:44:30priority to protect those girls.

0:44:30 > 0:44:35The Democratic Republic of Congo is facing

0:44:35 > 0:44:36an uncertain political future.

0:44:36 > 0:44:38This is the president, Joseph Kabila -

0:44:38 > 0:44:40he has overstayed his time in power.

0:44:40 > 0:44:42His mandate expires at the end of 2016,

0:44:42 > 0:44:48but there is no date for another election.

0:44:48 > 0:44:50People have been protesting on streets in Kinshasha -

0:44:50 > 0:44:54two people were killed on Sunday.

0:44:54 > 0:44:56Two weeks ago, we brought you a report from the border

0:44:56 > 0:45:00with Uganda on the flow of migrants escaping violence and hunger.

0:45:00 > 0:45:05Now we have a report from Bunia where a bitter ethnic conflict

0:45:05 > 0:45:07is starting up again.

0:45:07 > 0:45:17Catherine Byaruhanga has been there - this is her report.

0:45:17 > 0:45:25Three friends who only have each other. They ran for two days after

0:45:25 > 0:45:30their village was attacked. Their parents are gone, so they have to

0:45:30 > 0:45:36fend for themselves. Fighting has erupted here between rival ethnic

0:45:36 > 0:45:41groups. But when I asked the boys which tried they belong to, they

0:45:41 > 0:45:51have no idea. Children have taken the brunt of this conflict. The boys

0:45:51 > 0:45:58are staying with Francoise. She has lived through war before and knows

0:45:58 > 0:46:03what it is like to run away from home with nothing. She has opened

0:46:03 > 0:46:08her doors to over 40 people, but can't look after all of them.

0:46:08 > 0:46:13TRANSLATION:The Government needs to assist them so that I can help them

0:46:13 > 0:46:18all. This places in the open, and they feel cold. There is no

0:46:18 > 0:46:27mattress, no food, clothes. The fighting is happening out here in

0:46:27 > 0:46:32the countryside. It is too remote and too dangerous for aid agencies

0:46:32 > 0:46:42to reach. Some have stayed behind, but not out of choice. This church

0:46:42 > 0:46:49is now abandoned. There are no more masses. The Catholic Church is one

0:46:49 > 0:46:54of the most powerful institutions here in the Democratic Republic of

0:46:54 > 0:46:58Congo. The fact that priests and nuns have fled is a sign of the

0:46:58 > 0:47:07level of insecurity in this region. This woman has spent her life

0:47:07 > 0:47:10farming, but now she can barely find food to feed her children. She can't

0:47:10 > 0:47:15afford to go to Bunia, the safer town.

0:47:15 > 0:47:20TRANSLATION:We know the situation is difficult here, but what can we

0:47:20 > 0:47:26do? Because we can't travel to ten two without money. It is to far to

0:47:26 > 0:47:35travel without kids. We are forced to live in this church.Across the

0:47:35 > 0:47:41TRC, nearly 5 million people have been driven from their homes will

0:47:41 > 0:47:45stop the president has delayed elections, leading to a power vacuum

0:47:45 > 0:47:52and a web of conflicts. The UN has its biggest peacekeeping force in

0:47:52 > 0:47:57the country, but it's struggling to protect civilians. The Government

0:47:57 > 0:48:02doesn't seem ready to take responsibility. The only person who

0:48:02 > 0:48:07would talk to us is the Army spokesman, but he says the fighting

0:48:07 > 0:48:14isn't their problem for now. TRANSLATION:This is not a military

0:48:14 > 0:48:19mission, it is about reinstating public order, so it is commanded by

0:48:19 > 0:48:23the police. If they believe the situation is getting worse, the Army

0:48:23 > 0:48:28will take hold.Meanwhile, like many children, the three boys are trapped

0:48:28 > 0:48:38in a country sliding further into chaos.

0:48:38 > 0:48:41The Turkish President has been strongly criticised after telling

0:48:41 > 0:48:44a little girl who was dressed up in military uniform

0:48:44 > 0:48:48that she would be honoured if killed while fighting.

0:48:48 > 0:48:52Recep Tayyip Erdogan was speaking at a meeting of his AK

0:48:52 > 0:48:56party in the southern town of Kahramanmaras.

0:48:56 > 0:49:03Here's Mr Erdogan with the child.

0:49:03 > 0:49:06And if we take a closer look you can see her maroon beret,

0:49:06 > 0:49:12which is of the type worn by the Turkish special forces.

0:49:12 > 0:49:14Mr Erdogan is quoted as saying

0:49:14 > 0:49:19"We have our maroon berets here, but maroon berets never cry."

0:49:19 > 0:49:23He then goes on to say, "She has a Turkish flag in her pocket too.

0:49:23 > 0:49:27If she's martyred, they'll lay a flag on her, God willing."

0:49:27 > 0:49:36There's been plenty of criticism on social media

0:49:36 > 0:49:39but Mr Erdogan has often glorified martyrdom in the past.

0:49:39 > 0:49:43Here's the BBC's Selin Gerit in Istanbul.

0:49:43 > 0:49:48It was a jubilant scene for Sun, but difficult to watch for others. He

0:49:48 > 0:49:53told the little girl that she should be honoured if she got killed in a

0:49:53 > 0:49:57military operation. Those who were watching at the scene started

0:49:57 > 0:50:05chanting slogans in his favour, asking them to -- asking him to take

0:50:05 > 0:50:10them to the combat zone. Criticism erupted on social media. Some said

0:50:10 > 0:50:18it was akin to child abuse, another saying, you can't wish her dead. He

0:50:18 > 0:50:26has been criticised for a long time for promoting martyrdom. It is seen

0:50:26 > 0:50:37as one of the highest honours of Islam. Over 30 Turkish soldiers have

0:50:37 > 0:50:41got killed in combat in recent times, they are considered as

0:50:41 > 0:50:46martyrs here in Turkey, every police officer and every soldier killed on

0:50:46 > 0:50:52duty is considered a master. -- a martyr.

0:50:52 > 0:50:54Let me take you to Jerusalem, where Christian leaders

0:50:54 > 0:50:57have taken the rare and sudden step of shutting one

0:50:57 > 0:51:03of their holiest sites - the Church of Holy Sepulchre.

0:51:03 > 0:51:05Let me show you what happened on Sunday.

0:51:05 > 0:51:07The big wooden doors to this 1,000-year-old doors

0:51:07 > 0:51:11were closed indefinitely in a land and tax dispute.

0:51:11 > 0:51:12Moments earlier, these leaders of Catholic, Armenian

0:51:12 > 0:51:16and Greek denominations,

0:51:16 > 0:51:17had strong words for the Israeli authorities,

0:51:17 > 0:51:19accusing them of a "systematic campaign"

0:51:19 > 0:51:21on Christians in the Holy Land.

0:51:21 > 0:51:23Worshippers are forced to pray outside.

0:51:23 > 0:51:25Signs are put up in solidarity which read,

0:51:25 > 0:51:31"Stop the persecution of churches."

0:51:31 > 0:51:34The church objects to an attempt to tax its property,

0:51:34 > 0:51:37which the authorities in Jerusalem view as commercial.

0:51:37 > 0:51:38They fear that proposed property laws

0:51:38 > 0:51:42would let the state claim church-owned land.

0:51:42 > 0:51:51Here are church leaders talking about it.

0:51:55 > 0:52:05It breaches their obligations which guarantee the rights in what seems

0:52:05 > 0:52:11to be an attempt to weaken the Christian presence in Jerusalem. We

0:52:11 > 0:52:18decided to take this unprecedented step of closing the Church of Holy

0:52:18 > 0:52:19Sepulchre.

0:52:19 > 0:52:22But on the other side of the debate is the Mayor,

0:52:22 > 0:52:24who is trying to get about $186 million

0:52:24 > 0:52:25in uncollected taxes on church assets.

0:52:25 > 0:52:29Take a look at this tweet.

0:52:43 > 0:52:47Well, the church attracts thousands of worshippers

0:52:47 > 0:52:47and tourists every year.

0:52:47 > 0:52:50We know it as a key site for Christians

0:52:50 > 0:52:52who believe Jesus was crucified, buried and resurrected there.

0:52:52 > 0:52:58Let's hear from some of the visitors there.

0:52:58 > 0:53:02I am disappointed because I did not know it was going to be close. I

0:53:02 > 0:53:10came to Jerusalem may need to see the church. All over the rolled, I

0:53:10 > 0:53:15have never heard of any church paying taxes anywhere. What is this

0:53:15 > 0:53:23new idea?We wanted to visit the actual grave, right? The most

0:53:23 > 0:53:29important thing for us. We received this information yesterday that it

0:53:29 > 0:53:35would be closed. We hope for a couple of hours, but apparently it

0:53:35 > 0:53:38is closed for a longer period. I feel disappointed.

0:53:38 > 0:53:40A lot of disappointment indeed.

0:53:40 > 0:53:42China's Communist Party has proposed removing a clause

0:53:42 > 0:53:45in the constitution which limits presidencies to two five-year terms.

0:53:45 > 0:53:48This means President Xi Jinping could remain as leader

0:53:48 > 0:53:55after the end of his second term in 2023.

0:53:55 > 0:53:56The censors have gone into overdrive,

0:53:56 > 0:54:03and people have been trying to get around the firewall.

0:54:03 > 0:54:04Here's the reason Winnie the Pooh -

0:54:04 > 0:54:07the cartoon regularly compared to President Xi - has been banned.

0:54:07 > 0:54:08Here's Professor Steve Tsang

0:54:08 > 0:54:13to explain China's constitutional changes.

0:54:13 > 0:54:16It is significant largely innocent because the office of the state

0:54:16 > 0:54:21president is so largely significant. He asked for it and get it knowing

0:54:21 > 0:54:29full well that there is a significant price to pay in terms of

0:54:29 > 0:54:35the party establish and being uncomfortable with it. And also the

0:54:35 > 0:54:38population is uncomfortable with it. He has consolidated power, he

0:54:38 > 0:54:47doesn't need to extend his office as state president in order to stay in

0:54:47 > 0:54:55power beyond 2023. He has already done that in October. He is doing

0:54:55 > 0:55:02it, and the difference is that in 2023, he can go on state visits.

0:55:02 > 0:55:05There is not a lot else that he needs this office in order to do. On

0:55:05 > 0:55:12top of that, he has his thoughts being written into the car is Jewish

0:55:12 > 0:55:18and of the Chinese Communist Party. The only other party who had that

0:55:18 > 0:55:26was the founder of the republic of china, nobody else had ever achieved

0:55:26 > 0:55:29that apart from him.

0:55:29 > 0:55:34If you would like to comment on any of our
