:00:22. > :00:27.course led to o bromance between two strong men. A man world-famous for

:00:27. > :00:34.sacking people. And Scotland's First Minister, Alex

:00:34. > :00:38.Salmond, keen to land the project's supposed to be worth 1 billion and

:00:38. > :00:42.jobs galore. 6,000 jobs over Scotland, that is is

:00:42. > :00:46.a powerful argument. He has gotten people to invest in Scotland. Alex

:00:46. > :00:53.Salmond has been fantastic. But when neither the thousands of

:00:53. > :00:58.jobs nor the 1 billion turned up, it went sour.

:00:58. > :01:03.Are you calling the First Minister a liar? Maybe he has a bad memory.

:01:03. > :01:08.That is possible. He say what is is the evidence? I am the evidence.

:01:08. > :01:14.It's been a PR disaster. You have been detained... All of

:01:14. > :01:18.this raises questions about the judgment of the First Minister.

:01:18. > :01:24.I'm disappointed that the plan have not gone ahead as envisaged. I hope

:01:24. > :01:28.that they will do. And weather the Scottish Government

:01:28. > :01:32.asked enough questions about Trump and some of the people he has done

:01:32. > :01:42.business with in the States. Why not say you are connected with

:01:42. > :01:57.

:01:57. > :02:03.the Mafia, you are fired? Again, Not the sands of Arabia but

:02:03. > :02:06.Aberdeen. The site of an epic battle over a golf course between the most

:02:06. > :02:15.famous property developer in noshg City and a few Scots who will not

:02:15. > :02:19.move for love nor money. Welcome to the battle of the dunes.

:02:19. > :02:25.The dunes are among the largest in the world.

:02:25. > :02:31.I decided that in honour of my mother and in honour of Scotland we

:02:31. > :02:36.named the dunes the Great Dunes of Scotland.

:02:36. > :02:41.Well, actually, the Great Dunes are nowhere near the largest in the

:02:41. > :02:47.world, or even in Britain. This place is not called the Great Dunes

:02:47. > :02:57.either but the Menie Estate, but Donald did not like the name. So it

:02:57. > :02:57.

:02:57. > :03:03.got fired. Fore!

:03:03. > :03:11.# It went straight down the middle... So what makes Donald Trump

:03:11. > :03:15.tick? I'm invited to meet him at his luxury Gulf complex in New Jersey.

:03:15. > :03:19.Hello sir. Hello.

:03:19. > :03:24.How are things? Everything is fine. I'm in the middle of a tournament.

:03:24. > :03:34.See you on Tuesday. Smashing. So who is this man with

:03:34. > :03:38.the Midas touch? One of the big magazines says that everything he

:03:38. > :03:47.touches turning to gold. # Goldfinger.

:03:47. > :03:53.# He's the man # The man with the Midas touch. This

:03:53. > :04:01.man has made a fortune turning himself into a brand. There is the

:04:01. > :04:07.Trump Property Empire. Trump Action Man. Trump jewellery, Trump Ties,

:04:07. > :04:14.even Trump Water. So what are you buying into? It stands for quality.

:04:14. > :04:18.We do beautiful quality jobs. We have had a great time of it. That is

:04:18. > :04:23.why we are successful. Along the way, he is sell dumb out

:04:23. > :04:28.of the headlines. Wife number one, famously called him

:04:28. > :04:33.The Donald. That stuck. In the US, his aggressive business style led

:04:33. > :04:37.him to being the host of the original The Apprentice.

:04:37. > :04:47.You're fired... You're fired... You're fired.

:04:47. > :04:51.This is the latest evictee from the show The Apprentice. The Donald is

:04:51. > :04:58.doing The Donald, but like so many Americans, he is proud of his roots

:04:58. > :05:06.in the old country. His grandfather born in Germany.

:05:06. > :05:10.Oops, wrong old country. But his mother was from the land of

:05:10. > :05:14.MacLeod. Well my mother was born in

:05:14. > :05:21.Stornoway. She loved Scotland. She thought Scotland was the best. She

:05:21. > :05:25.had great respect and love for the Queen. Her name was Mary MacLeod. I

:05:25. > :05:29.felt strongly about doing something really good for my mother.

:05:29. > :05:36.# When you go. # Will you send back.

:05:36. > :05:41.# A letter from America... When the Trump's promise issed the Scottish

:05:41. > :05:48.Government to invest, not millions but 1 billion on the golf complex,

:05:48. > :05:51.they were greeted with open arms. First in 2005, Labour's Jack

:05:51. > :05:55.McConnell was given a tour of Trump Tower.

:05:55. > :05:59.This is the boss of Scotland, guys, the boss.

:05:59. > :06:06.In 2007, Alex Salmond, leader of the Scottish National Party won the

:06:06. > :06:09.election pt the love affair with the Trump continued. On offer, a massive

:06:09. > :06:12.development. We are talking about several

:06:12. > :06:15.thousand and jobs, we are talking about hundreds of millions of

:06:15. > :06:22.investment. Really it will be something that is special for

:06:23. > :06:30.Scotland and for this local area. The Trump plan included two golf

:06:30. > :06:35.courses, a five-star hotel, 500 homes and 950 timeshare flats.

:06:35. > :06:39.This was a cholesterolial planning application, covering a substantial

:06:39. > :06:44.area of land and was controversial on the number of counts. The other

:06:44. > :06:53.place with a great tee, is up there, it is not so direct... The deal

:06:53. > :07:00.would show that Alex Salmond's Scotland would be open for business.

:07:00. > :07:08.The two men met at a Global Scot dinner in 2007 at this French

:07:08. > :07:12.restaurant in Manhattan. Everything seemed so ooh Lara.

:07:12. > :07:18.I would say I have a very good relationship with Alex Salmond. He

:07:18. > :07:24.didn't know me well, but we would call. We spoke to each other a

:07:24. > :07:33.couple of times over the years. I had a decent relationship with him.

:07:33. > :07:36.But then a vote came up, it was tied 7 - 7. Martin Ford had ast casting

:07:36. > :07:46.vote. This was an attempt to get something

:07:46. > :07:54.better, not an inStock Exchange to go away and not come back.

:07:54. > :08:00.The Trump Organise suggested, either you go with our plan or we take the

:08:00. > :08:06.money elsewhere. Then in 2007, Alex Salmond's people met Trump's people

:08:06. > :08:10.at this hotel. Alex Salmond phone phoned Scotland's chief planner and

:08:10. > :08:18.then phoned to set up a meeting. The next day, the Scottish Government

:08:18. > :08:22.took over the planning decision in Edinburgh.

:08:22. > :08:27.Aberdeenshire's "no" was called. In "no" to the golfing complex, became

:08:27. > :08:30.yes, please, Mr Trump. Why did Alex Salmond involve himself in a

:08:30. > :08:36.planning matter? Alex Salmond would not give a formal interview. So I

:08:36. > :08:41.caught up with him on the road. I was there as the constituency

:08:42. > :08:47.member of the Scottish Parliament. I had no government decision role in

:08:47. > :08:51.the planning. I get taken out of that. No, I don't regret it I was

:08:51. > :09:00.not a part of the decision-making. Scottish parliamentary Committee

:09:00. > :09:07.later found the call in incompetent but the decision ounwise and

:09:07. > :09:14.cavalier. To display poor judgment. It went on to suggest that any MSP

:09:15. > :09:18.could get a meeting at 24 hour's notice, stretched that situation to

:09:18. > :09:21.a breaking point. What matters is that they said that

:09:21. > :09:27.the planning process had been properly followed. That is a fact

:09:27. > :09:33.that is on the record. So it -- is it common for a planning

:09:33. > :09:36.decision to be called in like this? No. Most unusual. Almost

:09:36. > :09:39.unprecedented. How long have you been doing this?

:09:39. > :09:43.I've been involved in planning for over 40 years.

:09:43. > :09:48.Has there ever been a time, have you ever experienced something like

:09:48. > :09:55.this? Never. Not in my entire career.

:09:55. > :09:59.There was a problem. The great tunes were protected with one of the

:09:59. > :10:03.highest possible class foreign exchanges. A site f Site of Special

:10:04. > :10:10.Scientific Interest. That meant, not so fast. Scottish natural heritage

:10:10. > :10:19.and others fought the Trump plan. It include included 1,000 plus homes,

:10:19. > :10:23.and flats and farm farmland. The balance morning the constituents

:10:23. > :10:28.is strongly in flavour. That is as we see the social and the economic

:10:28. > :10:34.benefits. 6,000 jobs in Scotland, 1400 local and permanent jobs in the

:10:34. > :10:35.north-east of Scotland. That is is a powerful argument. I think it

:10:35. > :10:41.outweighs the environmental concerns.

:10:41. > :10:45.But the 6,000 jobs was a promise, not a certainty. Battle lines were

:10:45. > :10:51.drawn in the green corner, there were the eco warriors and some

:10:51. > :10:56.locals. Against them, Trump and his sons.

:10:56. > :11:01.I got busted... Local businesses and many residents on the estate. No-one

:11:01. > :11:07.can question the Trump's love of the great outdoors.

:11:07. > :11:13.Well shot, sir. Thank you. With these holiday snaps,

:11:13. > :11:19.unfortunately, they caused a row, the leopard, the crocodile, the

:11:19. > :11:23.elephant, that's its tail, you are all fired. Trump Minor looks after

:11:23. > :11:28.Scotland as Trump Major has the reality TV series and a business

:11:28. > :11:33.empire to run back home. What tee is this? The back tee on

:11:33. > :11:38.14. In our humble opinion it is one of the best holes in all of golf.

:11:38. > :11:44.But it was not just about building a course on the dunes. These three

:11:44. > :11:49.properties were blots on the Trump landscape. The solution... Sarah, I

:11:49. > :11:55.want to get rid of that house. will create a stir. Who cares. You

:11:55. > :11:58.know what? Who cares? It is our property, we can do what we want. We

:11:58. > :12:02.are trying to build the greatest course in the world. This house is

:12:02. > :12:07.ugly. The Trumps tried to buy them, but it

:12:07. > :12:13.did not work. We can't pay 20 times what it is not

:12:13. > :12:18.worth. People try to make out we are throwing them ruthlessly off their

:12:18. > :12:22.land, but that is not it at all. So if Trump could not buy them, he

:12:22. > :12:27.would make the earth move. There are houses far away from the

:12:27. > :12:31.course but they are in view, but we are turning the area so that you

:12:31. > :12:37.don't see the houses. I don't want to see the houses. Nobody has a

:12:37. > :12:43.problem with it. I guess those living in the houses have.

:12:43. > :12:49.David Milne did not like it the bank of earth was removed and then

:12:49. > :12:53.something new threatened the view. These are the trees planted. It is

:12:53. > :12:56.obviously put in to block our light and reduce our enjoyment of our

:12:56. > :13:02.home. You built trees to his property, why

:13:02. > :13:06.did you do that? We are entitled to put things where we want to. Like

:13:06. > :13:12.any other landscaping feature. If there is an eyesore, you can put

:13:12. > :13:18.something there to shelter it. Susan Munro has problems with the

:13:18. > :13:24.neighbours too. Her view of the sea has gone, but Trump security people

:13:24. > :13:28.are on patrol 24/7. When I come home from work on an

:13:28. > :13:32.evening, they follow me. They sit here and shine their lights. They

:13:32. > :13:37.are still there at 2.00am. They are there all night.

:13:37. > :13:42.How scary is that? Very scary. Because there is nothing here. There

:13:42. > :13:47.is no street lighting. Nothing. The Trump Organisation say this is

:13:47. > :13:56.untrue. That security is just doing its job, protecting the site from

:13:56. > :14:03.potential intruders. But this is the sharpest thorn in

:14:03. > :14:09.the Trump's side. This farm is slap bang in the middle

:14:09. > :14:13.of the estate it is between Donald Trump and Michael Forbes. It is not

:14:13. > :14:16.business it is personal. Everything that comes out of his

:14:16. > :14:22.mouth is a lie. That is what they are saying here. Whatever he is

:14:22. > :14:28.saying it is the opposite. I happen to be a truthful person. His

:14:28. > :14:33.property is terribly maintained. It is slum like. It is disgusting. He

:14:33. > :14:37.lives like a pig. The brash New Yorker had finally met

:14:37. > :14:43.a man every bit as determined as he is. What was it like being compared

:14:43. > :14:50.to a porker? I did not think b much about it for a time, but that was

:14:50. > :14:54.good coming from a clone! Donald Junior does not like Mr Forbes'

:14:54. > :15:01.family farm, either. John, does this look like a farm to

:15:01. > :15:08.you? Well, there is a tractor. If you get that operational, I will

:15:08. > :15:12.give you the golf course! There is no farming going on here. In the

:15:13. > :15:18.time we have seen him here, he has not been fishing either.

:15:18. > :15:22.But it is his home. Your father says he lives like a paying pig.

:15:22. > :15:28.Well, you make your own conclusion. Relations between the new neighbours

:15:28. > :15:35.got worse. Then Michael's taps ran dry.

:15:35. > :15:42.No water. Dry. Team Trump say this was an accident.

:15:42. > :15:47.The water was cut off? His water was cut off for six days? Unintentional?

:15:47. > :15:51.Of course not, but again, it is part of being on a construction site.

:15:51. > :15:55.Everyone knows this. We brought in tractors through there. There was a

:15:55. > :16:02.clay pipe that had been there for 50 years. A heavy piece of machinery

:16:02. > :16:09.ran over it. All of this became a PR nightmare, when one man chronicled

:16:09. > :16:14.the goings on for a year. Anthony Baxter's film, You've Been Trumped,

:16:14. > :16:20.tells the objector's story. He was filming on Susan Munro's

:16:20. > :16:30.property when this happened. You have been detained under section

:16:30. > :16:31.

:16:31. > :16:36.14... What has he done? Let go of the camera, sir.

:16:36. > :16:42.Donald Junior believed that backster had been behaving badly.

:16:42. > :16:45.Anthony backster was handcuffed, was he a vandal? He broke into our

:16:45. > :16:49.offices with a camera over the shoulder, trying to question people

:16:49. > :16:54.into a house he was not welcome to. No-one said for him to come in. In

:16:54. > :17:00.other parts of the world it would have been handled differently.

:17:00. > :17:05.Are you calling Donald Trump Junior a liar? I am calling him aliar. He

:17:05. > :17:10.accused me of being a criminal. Of breaking into offices at his

:17:10. > :17:19.father's property in Scotland. Which is completely and utterly

:17:19. > :17:24.untrue. Backster -- ter accuses Grampian

:17:24. > :17:30.Police, of acting like a private security force for the Trumps it is

:17:30. > :17:34.a grave charge. In a statement the Police Scotland said that it was

:17:34. > :17:37.unfortunate that disagreements deteriorate where the police

:17:37. > :17:42.intervention is required but that the police service remains

:17:42. > :17:47.completely neutral. The objective's claim that the

:17:47. > :17:50.police and the First Minister were all back then on Trump's side. The

:17:50. > :17:56.developer's tactics were intimidating.

:17:56. > :18:00.Are you a bully? No, I am not a bully at all. We want to make

:18:00. > :18:07.something great for Scotland, for myself, in honour of my mother.

:18:07. > :18:17.Sometimes you have to be strong. Anthony's documentary turned a local

:18:17. > :18:17.

:18:18. > :18:25.row into a national talking point. In a public vote Michael Forbes beat

:18:25. > :18:30.off competition from Andy Murray and Mr Connery, to become Scot of the

:18:30. > :18:35.Year. So, I'm a top pig! Look who is

:18:35. > :18:41.snorting now! All of this would have been a farce about not very much,

:18:41. > :18:47.perhaps, but 6,000 jobs, the five-star hotel, and the 1 billion

:18:47. > :18:52.investment, if it materialised, but so far one golf course and a

:18:52. > :18:59.temporary clubhouse. Panorama checked the recent accounts and

:18:59. > :19:05.calculate that the Trumps spent not the promise promised 1 billion but

:19:05. > :19:11.about at 25 million. Now with the planning permission, it is worth a

:19:11. > :19:18.lot more. At a conservative estimate it is

:19:18. > :19:23.probably worth about 100 million. Who got the best of this deal, Trump

:19:23. > :19:28.or Scotland? Trump. No question? No question.

:19:28. > :19:34.So why the lack of construction? The stumbling block, according to Trump

:19:34. > :19:38.is the plan for 11 off-shore wind turbines like these in full view of

:19:38. > :19:45.the golf course. Trump said that Alex Salmond said it was a

:19:45. > :19:50.non-starter. I don't want to be standing on the

:19:50. > :19:52.first tee looking into an industrial wind turbine if I am spending this

:19:52. > :19:57.money. He said it would never happen.

:19:57. > :20:01.Are you sure about that? 100%. We discussed it, he said it would not

:20:01. > :20:07.happen. I believe he denies that? I don't

:20:07. > :20:11.know his attitude. I can't speak for him. You will have to ask him.

:20:11. > :20:17.Are you calling the First Minister of Scotland a liar? Maybe he has a

:20:17. > :20:22.bad memory. That is possible. First Minister refutes that.

:20:22. > :20:30.Mr Trump and I have a well ventilated disagreement about the

:20:30. > :20:33.energy policy of Scotland. But an investor does not have the right to

:20:33. > :20:38.dictate the energy policy of Scotland. The energy policy of

:20:38. > :20:44.Scotland should be decided by the Scottish Parliament, democratically

:20:44. > :20:50.elected by the Scottish people. That is how things will remain.

:20:50. > :20:56.In May, Trump launched a legal challenge to halt the wind turbines.

:20:56. > :21:02.In Scotland, the bromance between the First Minister and the Donald is

:21:02. > :21:07.well and truly over. Some of the neighbours around the golf course

:21:07. > :21:14.think of Mr Trump as something of a bully, but here in the United

:21:14. > :21:20.States, The Donald is something of a local hero.

:21:20. > :21:24.So who is in the right? What is the truth about Trump? Did the Scottish

:21:24. > :21:29.Government know enough about him before wooing him to Scotland? For

:21:29. > :21:36.years now, doubts have been raised about Trump's true wealth. Not that

:21:36. > :21:40.you would know it if you talked to The Donald. How much are you worth?

:21:40. > :21:47.Well, different people say different things. I would rather not say a

:21:47. > :21:51.number. On David Letterman you said about 9

:21:51. > :21:54.billion. I would say that is the right

:21:54. > :22:02.number, yes. But two years before the Scottish

:22:02. > :22:07.Government gave its blessing to the golf course, a book claimed that

:22:07. > :22:11.Trump's wealth was in the millions, not the billions. Trump sued,

:22:11. > :22:15.appealed and lost again. Some believe that Trump's gold has lost

:22:15. > :22:20.its glitter. In the 80s with the real estate,

:22:20. > :22:27.people saw him as a serious developer, helping to transform New

:22:27. > :22:32.York and also a larger than life personality. A bit of a clown but a

:22:32. > :22:36.big personality. I think he has lost credibility, especially with New

:22:36. > :22:43.Yorkers. Who used to have a soft spot for him.

:22:43. > :22:48.Trump made a fortune in the Big Apple, making pun from real estate

:22:48. > :22:58.and gambling, but you can't do that business here without brushing up

:22:58. > :22:59.

:22:59. > :23:04.unsavoury characters. That includes the Mafia.

:23:04. > :23:10.The Trump empire is centred in New York, but it has outposts across

:23:10. > :23:15.America and around the world. Trump is happy to lend his name to

:23:15. > :23:20.other developers for a price, but that can be a risky business.

:23:20. > :23:25.Critics say on the Trump projects, you are often the face but not the

:23:25. > :23:29.money. Is that true? It is true in certain cases but for the most part

:23:29. > :23:32.I own. As I move away from New York and from the United States I do

:23:33. > :23:39.deals with partners. Some of them are the best deals I have made. I

:23:39. > :23:45.don't have to put up the money. such licensing deal involved this

:23:45. > :23:50.building in Fort Lauderdale, Florida. Trump was the front man to

:23:50. > :23:55.woo investors. Now The Donald and others are being sued over the

:23:55. > :24:02.development, it never even opened after the developer went bust.

:24:02. > :24:05.I am representing 75 purchasers of 53 units in the project to be known
