0:00:10 > 0:00:16Donald Trump's first year in office has been one of the most

0:00:16 > 0:00:22controversial in American history. This American carnage stops right

0:00:22 > 0:00:27here right now. We're going to have a strict ban and have extreme

0:00:27 > 0:00:34vetting.Donald Trump has bombed the hell out of Isis.He declared

0:00:34 > 0:00:42terrorists losers.Rocket man.Why have you been retweeting anti-Muslim

0:00:42 > 0:00:48videos.Don't be rude.President Trump firing FBI director James

0:00:48 > 0:00:53Comey.You are a fake news. Nobody knew that health care could be so

0:00:53 > 0:00:59complicated.Employment is up the stock market is soaring.President

0:00:59 > 0:01:06Trump referred to Africa as a shithole.In a series of tweets the

0:01:06 > 0:01:13president said he is very smart and a genius. If he doesn't call himself

0:01:13 > 0:01:20a genius, no one else will.But I'm president and they're not.But what

0:01:20 > 0:01:23do his voters make of his first year, Panorama have been following

0:01:23 > 0:01:31four of them to find out.I think Trump has made America better,

0:01:31 > 0:01:35despite half the country does bts realise that.If they try to get

0:01:35 > 0:01:40Trump out of office illegally I believe there will be a revolt in

0:01:40 > 0:01:44America.I voted for Trump, but it's been a hard year to be a Trump

0:01:44 > 0:01:52voters.He is sometimes racist, but if he gets agitated I think he will

0:01:52 > 0:01:57turn out to be the greatest president we have ever had.

0:02:11 > 0:02:16I have always been big into politics. I love it. I like watching

0:02:16 > 0:02:22it. Understanding it. I believe Trump is there for me as an

0:02:22 > 0:02:34individual. He don't know me, but I believe he's here for me.

0:02:34 > 0:02:37believe he's here for me. I voted for Donald Trump because he was

0:02:37 > 0:02:40saying everything that I have been wanting to see in a president for a

0:02:40 > 0:02:49long time and he come across genuine and it resonated with me.We will

0:02:49 > 0:02:57make America great again!

0:02:57 > 0:03:05Travis runs a community web-site in the steel town of Lone Star. Most of

0:03:05 > 0:03:11these homes was built in the 50s by steel factory workers. It was a very

0:03:11 > 0:03:16nice neighbourhood. It was small town America back then, but it ain't

0:03:16 > 0:03:27no more. You could just tell by how run down it is now. Back when I grew

0:03:27 > 0:03:32up in the 70s, I'm a 70s kid, that is how our parents stopped us, we

0:03:32 > 0:03:37didn't have seat belts. Now we have got a law, you're got to wear a seat

0:03:37 > 0:03:46belt and all that crap.

0:03:46 > 0:03:49belt and all that crap. Down here we support our police and fire

0:03:49 > 0:03:55departments. They do a dangerous job. They're the protectors you

0:03:55 > 0:04:03know. The thing I'm most afraid of for my country is the illegals

0:04:03 > 0:04:07coming across the border without being checked to see if they have

0:04:07 > 0:04:12ties with Islam. Radical Islam. Because you never know what is going

0:04:12 > 0:04:22to come across that border.

0:04:23 > 0:04:26Over the last decade, hundreds of steel workers have been laid off

0:04:26 > 0:04:31here. But by April, Travis thinks Donald Trump is beginning to turn

0:04:31 > 0:04:37things around. There is more optimism in the air. Like things is

0:04:37 > 0:04:43looking up. Since he won, he has done something that no other

0:04:43 > 0:04:51politicians has ever done - he is keeping his promises to the people.

0:04:51 > 0:04:58Immigration's down. Illegal aliens is down to 40%. They're not flooding

0:04:58 > 0:05:03America like they used to be.

0:05:05 > 0:05:08America like they used to be. Do I think he is great at everything? So

0:05:08 > 0:05:14far, yes.

0:05:14 > 0:05:18far, yes.Tonight the rusher investigation has reached President

0:05:18 > 0:05:23Trump's inner-most circle.Trump knows he is in trouble and he is

0:05:23 > 0:05:28vulnerable.Throughout the year the president's had to fight off

0:05:28 > 0:05:33allegation that his election team colluded with rusher. There has been

0:05:33 > 0:05:37no collusion between the Trump campaign and Russians or Trump and

0:05:37 > 0:05:45Russians. No collusion.I think it's just a witch-hunt. It's been a year.

0:05:45 > 0:05:52If there was Russian collusion as hated as Trump is they would already

0:05:52 > 0:05:57have exposed it. The Russians didn't get him elected. The American people

0:05:57 > 0:06:04elected Donald Trump.Christen and Frank are experts in Republican

0:06:04 > 0:06:11voting, who have been tracking Trump voters over the last year. The idea

0:06:11 > 0:06:17that rusher will be the thing that brings down Trump's presidency is

0:06:17 > 0:06:22almost an accepted fact among a lot of Democrats. Whereas if I do a

0:06:22 > 0:06:25focus group of Republican voters, the word rusher will not even come

0:06:25 > 0:06:35up. It is not on their radar.

0:06:35 > 0:06:43If you love Donald Trump he is innocent, if you hate him he is

0:06:43 > 0:06:49guilty. Trump voters look at this as pay back for the Clinton people for

0:06:49 > 0:06:55losing.The Democrats are a bunch of spoiled brats. They remind me of

0:06:55 > 0:07:00fourth grade little kids that don't get their way and they fall on the

0:07:00 > 0:07:05ground kicking and crying and... They lost the election. They don't

0:07:05 > 0:07:10care about the country. The only time they care about people is when

0:07:10 > 0:07:15it is election time and they want them to vote. They tried everything.

0:07:15 > 0:07:20One minute they say he is unstable. They try to say he was a sexual

0:07:20 > 0:07:28predator. All unfounded. This new hoopla about Me Too and I was

0:07:28 > 0:07:35touched, well I was... The American people's been raped for 30 years

0:07:35 > 0:07:47under the Clintons, can I raise my hand and say me too?

0:07:51 > 0:07:58The third time I want a Canary diamond. Oh, my gosh. This is the

0:07:58 > 0:08:08size ring I want. I'm Lynne and I am a Donald Trump voter. I think the

0:08:08 > 0:08:15rich will definitely get richer with Trump in office.Are you rich?No. I

0:08:15 > 0:08:19would love to be rich though. I would love to be rich. But no, I'm

0:08:19 > 0:08:25not anywhere near rich. What about the poor?I think the poor will get

0:08:25 > 0:08:29richer with Trump in office for sure. Yes. I think that is his

0:08:29 > 0:08:38strong point. That and keeping us safe.

0:08:38 > 0:08:41safe.Lynne, a former professional cheerleader, now runs a PR company

0:08:41 > 0:08:47in west Palm Beach. Not far from Donald Trump's private club.I have

0:08:47 > 0:08:53met him a few times. I had a great rapport with him. I liked him. He

0:08:53 > 0:09:05remembered my name. Friendly guy. She is a big fan of Donald Trump's

0:09:05 > 0:09:12tax reforms. The biggest tax cut, the biggest reform of all time.I

0:09:12 > 0:09:16like the new tax reforms Bill. As a small business owner I think it will

0:09:16 > 0:09:20help me with tax cuts so, the companies that hire me have more

0:09:20 > 0:09:27money and my small business will grow and I can hire people. But some

0:09:27 > 0:09:33of Donald Trump's biggest promises haven't yet been fulfilled.We are

0:09:33 > 0:09:39going to build that wall, it's going to be a great wall and let me tell

0:09:39 > 0:09:44you, Mexico's going to pay for the wall. Rebuild the country's

0:09:44 > 0:09:54infrastructure. Nobody can do that like me. Repealing and replacing the

0:09:54 > 0:09:58disaster known as Obamacare. There have been some really significant

0:09:58 > 0:10:04successes. And some pretty easily identifiable failures. Donald Trump

0:10:04 > 0:10:12was elected to repeal and replace Obamacare. It did not happen.

0:10:12 > 0:10:17President Trump's plans to replace Obama's health care famed to get

0:10:17 > 0:10:25past congress. But few Trump voters blame the president.

0:10:25 > 0:10:31He has done a very savvy thing in that he set up a sort of no lose

0:10:31 > 0:10:35scenario for himself. If things go well, he takes credit for them. If

0:10:35 > 0:10:41things go poorly, he is able to blame it on somebody else - the

0:10:41 > 0:10:46media, on gress.I do blame a lot of Republicans in congress for not

0:10:46 > 0:10:51supporting him and having his back. They probably bother me the most.

0:10:51 > 0:10:54When people realise he is in fact our president and he is not going

0:10:54 > 0:10:57anywhere and if we want to make anything happen, we are going to

0:10:57 > 0:11:05have to work together. But America is deeply divide over Donald Trump.

0:11:05 > 0:11:10Especially on social media.Being very open and vocal about Donald

0:11:10 > 0:11:17Trump notice an easy thing. What I started to do when I get hate mail,

0:11:17 > 0:11:26I would screen shot it and post it on social media. And show people how

0:11:26 > 0:11:29you know cyberbullying happens not only to kids, but to adults. It is

0:11:29 > 0:11:37not OK. The people who do like Donald Trump, they stick up for me

0:11:37 > 0:11:41and the irony is me, the groups of people don't know me and have no

0:11:41 > 0:11:46idea of who I am. It is based on their love or hate for Donald Trump.

0:11:46 > 0:11:51One of things that Lynne loves about Donald Trump is his unorthodox

0:11:51 > 0:11:58style.

0:11:58 > 0:12:01style.Everything all his tweets, autumn his name call like rocket

0:12:01 > 0:12:06man, I support all of that. I like how he tweets. I'm in the business

0:12:06 > 0:12:11of public relations and I think he is communicating directly to the

0:12:11 > 0:12:16masses via Twitter and I like it. This ills not how he planned to

0:12:16 > 0:12:24start, but President Trump has tweeted and it almost abombshell.

0:12:24 > 0:12:30Donald Trump berated London's mayor. Why have you been retweeting

0:12:30 > 0:12:36anti-Muslim videos. The president said he is very smart and a stable

0:12:36 > 0:12:45genius.I said at the start of year what would upset is if he changes

0:12:45 > 0:12:49and becomes this polished tanned politician and doesn't stay true to

0:12:49 > 0:12:58himself and he has not done that.

0:12:58 > 0:13:05But this style and temperament divides American voters. Many of his

0:13:05 > 0:13:08supporters still like that he is combative. But it is preventing him

0:13:08 > 0:13:12from building that majority coalition from winning the voters in

0:13:12 > 0:13:16the middle who may not have liked him, but voted for him. He has not

0:13:16 > 0:13:21given them a reason to stick with him by continuing to stay in this

0:13:21 > 0:13:25kind of childish campaign mode for the entire is first year of his

0:13:25 > 0:13:31presidency.

0:13:41 > 0:13:52My name is Mike. I'm a Muslim that voted for Donald Trump.

0:13:52 > 0:13:55voted for Donald Trump.24-year-old Mike runs a business selling hover

0:13:55 > 0:14:00boards imported from China.This is the Rolls-Royce of hoverboards. If

0:14:00 > 0:14:07this was made in America, this would cost $200. But this is made in China

0:14:07 > 0:14:11and only costs $20. The moment I thought he was capable of becoming

0:14:11 > 0:14:17President was when I attended his rally here in Michigan. We are going

0:14:17 > 0:14:24to win back the White House. The atmosphere, just the energy in the

0:14:24 > 0:14:29crowd was, you know, amazing. And you could just feel it like this guy

0:14:29 > 0:14:33was talking to you like he knows you.

0:14:33 > 0:14:37And that's what we need, we need a guy that actually gets his hands

0:14:37 > 0:14:42dirty. Not just a nice, well spoken person, nice and shiny for the

0:14:42 > 0:14:47cameras. We need a person who will say it like it is.Mike was born in

0:14:47 > 0:14:52the USA. But his family came from Lebanon.I'm one of the odd people

0:14:52 > 0:14:57that you'd find from a religious background from, a Muslim background

0:14:57 > 0:15:02that voted for Trump. Many other Muslim voters were put off by his

0:15:02 > 0:15:10so-called Muslim ban.A total and complete shutdown of Muslims

0:15:10 > 0:15:15entering the United States until our country's representatives can figure

0:15:15 > 0:15:21out what the hell is going on.When the President first tried to push

0:15:21 > 0:15:27the ban through, Mike joined the protests. At the end of the day, I

0:15:27 > 0:15:32don't follow like a sheep. If my leader, you know, messes up on

0:15:32 > 0:15:37something, I'm going to call him out. I'm going to protest. I'm going

0:15:37 > 0:15:44to use my freedom of speech to call him out on it. And it's healthy to

0:15:44 > 0:15:49stand against your leader. It's healthy to tell your leader, look,

0:15:49 > 0:15:54you must look here. But in December, a watered down

0:15:54 > 0:15:59version of the ban was implemented and now Mike supports it.

0:15:59 > 0:16:04Why are we crying in this country that it's a Muslim ban? It's a ban

0:16:04 > 0:16:09on countries where there is likely to have, and has, terrorist

0:16:09 > 0:16:13activity. The Muslim ban was created by the media. The original name of

0:16:13 > 0:16:19it. You know, Trump is going to stop all Muslims coming to this country.

0:16:19 > 0:16:24I mean, that's impossible. That's impossible to do. And Trump really

0:16:24 > 0:16:31never meant it that way.Detroit was once the economic envy of the world.

0:16:31 > 0:16:36When we abandoned the policy of America first, the skyscrapers went

0:16:36 > 0:16:41up in Beijing, while the factories and neighbourhoods crumbled right

0:16:41 > 0:16:51here in Detroit.Detroit has lived through decades of decline. In 2013,

0:16:51 > 0:16:59the city filed for bankruptcy. This area used to be one of the first

0:16:59 > 0:17:02places where immigrants flocked to, to find work and find the American

0:17:02 > 0:17:07dream. And now the factory is abandoned. It's been abandoned for

0:17:07 > 0:17:12about 15 years. And it is our time now to start

0:17:12 > 0:17:17rebuilding as millennials, as young people.

0:17:17 > 0:17:22The US economy started to improve under President Obama, but the trend

0:17:22 > 0:17:27has continued under President Trump. Unemployment is at its lowest rate

0:17:27 > 0:17:33for 17 years.You know, we're seeing development. We're seeing some

0:17:33 > 0:17:40construction going on here. And I think we're on the right path. We're

0:17:40 > 0:17:49going to come back. Detroit's going to come back.

0:17:51 > 0:17:55The economy is very important to Trump supporters. If you ask people

0:17:55 > 0:17:59what their number one issue is, they will tell you that it's the economy.

0:17:59 > 0:18:05If you own a house today, its value has gone up since Donald Trump was

0:18:05 > 0:18:10elected. If you own shares of stock, which a majority of people do, you

0:18:10 > 0:18:14are worth more than 10% more than when Donald Trump was elected. If

0:18:14 > 0:18:18you are unemployed, you are more likely to have a job. Trump tries to

0:18:18 > 0:18:24take credit for it. I'm not sure. But whatever was set in motion under

0:18:24 > 0:18:28Barack Obama has continued under Donald Trump. He does deserve credit

0:18:28 > 0:18:34for that.

0:18:40 > 0:18:44Gillette is a tight-knit, close community. We take care of each

0:18:44 > 0:18:54other. We like it that way. I'm Stacey Moller. I'm a Democrat and I

0:18:54 > 0:19:01voted for Donald Trump. It was just a few people, but it's

0:19:01 > 0:19:07such a bad...Stacey's daughter is a Republican, but couldn't bring

0:19:07 > 0:19:11herself to vote for Donald Trump. You are still you. You just voted

0:19:11 > 0:19:17for Trump.Thanks for loving me, even though I voted for Trump. I

0:19:17 > 0:19:20forgave you for Bush. Stacey voted for Donald Trump

0:19:20 > 0:19:26because of his promise to get coal miners back to work.I love being a

0:19:26 > 0:19:37miner and I'm proud to be a miner. I raised two children as a single

0:19:37 > 0:19:44mother and I could not have done it without the job I had at the coal

0:19:44 > 0:19:48mine. And that's our mine. That's where I

0:19:48 > 0:19:56work. There's a lot of issues as a Democrat that were important to me.

0:19:56 > 0:19:59But none more important than this state and these people that I work

0:19:59 > 0:20:04with. It was bigger than me. It was bigger than the issues I had with

0:20:04 > 0:20:11him personally. He's not my kind of guy. But this is, this wasn't about

0:20:11 > 0:20:15me. It was about the people that I care about and the people that I

0:20:15 > 0:20:22work with. And the state that I love and will defend even if that means I

0:20:22 > 0:20:34have to set aside what I feel for one vote. I'd do that.

0:20:34 > 0:20:40A year on, does Stacey have any regrets? Our first year with Trump

0:20:40 > 0:20:46has been good for Wyoming.I have ended the Obama administration's war

0:20:46 > 0:20:52on coal and we're putting our wonderful coal miners back to work,

0:20:52 > 0:20:59producing beautiful, clean coal. We're busy in the coal mine. The

0:20:59 > 0:21:06demand for US coal is up. Our economy has stabilised. So it's been

0:21:06 > 0:21:12good for Wyoming. It's been difficult for me because I find him

0:21:12 > 0:21:22to be disrespectful, a little bit. I would like him to be quiet and work.

0:21:22 > 0:21:28You know, he screams about hypocrisy and fake news and people coming, you

0:21:28 > 0:21:33know, there's a conspiracy against him. But his stories have changed

0:21:33 > 0:21:38from, it could be one month to the next. So, I just don't trust

0:21:38 > 0:21:42anything he says because I think it could change tomorrow. Depending on

0:21:42 > 0:21:48which way the wind blew. I think it just depends on what day it is and

0:21:48 > 0:21:55what fire he's starting that day. It feels like he's still

0:21:55 > 0:22:00campaigning. I didn't expect that to continue on after he was elected. I

0:22:00 > 0:22:04hoped it would level out and he would stop trying to speak to that

0:22:04 > 0:22:11faction of his base and realise that there's people like me that demand a

0:22:11 > 0:22:18little bit more decorum from the President of the free world.

0:22:18 > 0:22:23President Trump has been just as controversial on the world stage as

0:22:23 > 0:22:28he's been at home.23 of the 28 member nations are still not paying

0:22:28 > 0:22:33what they should be paying, and what they're supposed to be paying for

0:22:33 > 0:22:37their defence.

0:22:46 > 0:22:51The fundamental question of our time is whether the West has the will to

0:22:51 > 0:22:56survive. Rocket man is on a suicide mission for himself. And for his

0:22:56 > 0:23:02regime.

0:23:09 > 0:23:13To Trump voters, the niceties of diplomacy don't matter. It is

0:23:13 > 0:23:18whether you're putting America first.I think for his supporters,

0:23:18 > 0:23:24they would view America's standing in the world as being stronger

0:23:24 > 0:23:27because President Trump uses stronger rhetoric when he speaks.

0:23:27 > 0:23:31Donald Trump would say that America's being stronger, that we're

0:23:31 > 0:23:38not apologising any more. The single biggest wake-up call for me is when

0:23:38 > 0:23:42I showed Trump voters a video of Trump pushing aside world leaders,

0:23:42 > 0:23:46as he walked to the front of this economic conference. And I thought

0:23:46 > 0:23:54it was a very bad display of arrogance. To the Trump voters, they

0:23:54 > 0:23:59loved it. They embraced it. They cheered. Finally America's taking

0:23:59 > 0:24:05its rightful place in the front of the room n the front of the line.

0:24:08 > 0:24:14He's the President. That was President Trump moving somebody

0:24:14 > 0:24:22aside to get into the, to get in front. That was arrogant, but it's

0:24:22 > 0:24:27showing that, hey, I'm the American President.

0:24:27 > 0:24:32Of course we've got to put America first. Trump has every American's

0:24:32 > 0:24:40back, whether here in America or abroad. If you're trying to

0:24:40 > 0:24:44dis-America, Trump -- disrupt America, Trump will disrupt you. We

0:24:44 > 0:24:48have seen America come back to being a shining country, that all other

0:24:48 > 0:24:54countries respect. He's paved a new path for our

0:24:54 > 0:25:00presidency. What's presidential? He's redefined what it is. People

0:25:00 > 0:25:05are often saying, he's not Presidential, what is Presidential,

0:25:05 > 0:25:12he's the President, that therefore is Presidential.

0:25:12 > 0:25:17At the end of Donald Trump's turbulent first year in office, most

0:25:17 > 0:25:24of his voters appear as enthusiastic as ever.

0:25:24 > 0:25:31It is felt like every day there is some new story, some new tweet from

0:25:31 > 0:25:34the President, something that seems like this will be the thing. Is this

0:25:34 > 0:25:38the thing that will cause his supporters to abandon him? What has

0:25:38 > 0:25:43been the most surprising in a way is just how stable Donald Trump's

0:25:43 > 0:25:47polling numbers have been in a year which has felt anything but stable.

0:25:47 > 0:25:51I can't imagine what he could do to actually turn them off. They're not

0:25:51 > 0:25:56weakening. They're not changing. Donald Trump is here for four years.

0:25:56 > 0:26:01Congress is not going to throw him out. He's not going to quit. People

0:26:01 > 0:26:09need to get used to it. But we're going to have this for another three

0:26:09 > 0:26:19years, so, sit back, cuddle up with a nice blanket

0:26:20 > 0:26:24a nice blanket and your favourite drink and enjoy the show.More than

0:26:24 > 0:26:28half Americans don't approve of their President's performance and at

0:26:28 > 0:26:32this point in his term he's the most unpopular President in America

0:26:32 > 0:26:37history. But Donald Trump has defied the opinion polls before.Donald

0:26:37 > 0:26:41Trump could absolutely win re-election. It was surprising to so

0:26:41 > 0:26:45many when he initially won. And people would do well to not let

0:26:45 > 0:26:51themselves be caught off guard again.

0:26:51 > 0:26:56Would you vote for him again?I would vote for him again in a heart

0:26:56 > 0:27:00beat.Would you vote for Donald Trump again?At this point, I

0:27:00 > 0:27:03definitely would vote for him again. He has three more years, so we will

0:27:03 > 0:27:10see how it goes. Would you vote for him again? No.

0:27:10 > 0:27:15No, I could never vote for Trump again. It was hard the first time.

0:27:15 > 0:27:21But I couldn't make that choice again.

0:27:21 > 0:27:26Would I vote for him today? Of course I would, two more times,

0:27:26 > 0:27:30three more times, 100 more times. I'd vote for Trump until Trump is no

0:27:30 > 0:27:35longer there.
