0:00:04 > 0:00:08He promised to kick out millions of illegal immigrants.

0:00:08 > 0:00:10DONALD TRUMP: We have some bad hombres here,

0:00:10 > 0:00:13and we're going to get them out.

0:00:13 > 0:00:17Now President Trump's deportations have begun.

0:00:17 > 0:00:20TRANSLATION: They locked me up, threw me away like rubbish.

0:00:21 > 0:00:25Tonight, we ask, who is he targeting?

0:00:25 > 0:00:28They just came up to my mom and they told her that she was arrested,

0:00:28 > 0:00:30and then they put handcuffs on her.

0:00:30 > 0:00:34Sometimes, the sins of the father are visited upon the sons.

0:00:34 > 0:00:37The President wants America's police to take on

0:00:37 > 0:00:39controversial immigration powers.

0:00:42 > 0:00:45In major cities across the country, there's outrage.

0:00:45 > 0:00:49PROTESTERS: Shut down ICE! Shut down ICE!

0:00:49 > 0:00:53We are not a police state, we are not a police country.

0:00:53 > 0:00:57But President Trump's supporters want a new America.

0:00:57 > 0:01:00They want illegal immigrants out.

0:01:00 > 0:01:01Rafts in the water! Rafts in the water!

0:01:01 > 0:01:04We have people that come into this country that bring

0:01:04 > 0:01:07drugs into this country. I don't like that element,

0:01:07 > 0:01:09and I wish that we could get all of those people and deport them.

0:01:21 > 0:01:23TRUMP: Are you ready?

0:01:23 > 0:01:26CHEERING

0:01:26 > 0:01:33On day one, we will begin working on an impenetrable, physical,

0:01:33 > 0:01:38tall, powerful, beautiful southern border wall.

0:01:38 > 0:01:42CHEERING AND APPLAUSE

0:01:46 > 0:01:51The western end of the US-Mexico border, and the wall.

0:01:52 > 0:01:56There are already 650 miles of fortifications,

0:01:56 > 0:01:59but the President wants more.

0:01:59 > 0:02:02President Trump wants his wall to extend

0:02:02 > 0:02:08almost 2,000 miles from the Pacific Ocean here right through to Texas.

0:02:08 > 0:02:11It would be the biggest structure of its kind built

0:02:11 > 0:02:16anywhere in hundreds of years, a symbol of strength to some

0:02:16 > 0:02:18but, to others, a symbol of hate.

0:02:21 > 0:02:25The President wants the wall to keep out hundreds of thousands who

0:02:25 > 0:02:28cross into America illegally every year.

0:02:30 > 0:02:35He also wants mass deportations of the millions already in America,

0:02:35 > 0:02:37many who've been there for decades.

0:02:39 > 0:02:42On weekends, those who've already been deported

0:02:42 > 0:02:45gather at the wall to talk to their loved ones on the other side.

0:02:47 > 0:02:51Olga, a make-up artist, was deported in April.

0:02:51 > 0:02:54She'd lived in California for 27 years.

0:02:55 > 0:02:58She left her six-year-old with family.

0:02:58 > 0:03:00She's had custody of Jalene since birth.

0:03:15 > 0:03:18TRANSLATION: She calls me and she asks me why I abandoned her.

0:03:19 > 0:03:26She asks me if I don't love her any more. And that hurts a lot.

0:03:29 > 0:03:31For decades, the authorities didn't go after her.

0:03:33 > 0:03:37They even gave her a work permit. But this year, things changed.

0:03:42 > 0:03:46They put chains on my feet, on my waist, tied like this to my hands.

0:03:49 > 0:03:52They locked me up, threw me away like rubbish.

0:03:54 > 0:03:59She said a guard insulted her. He would beat himself here.

0:03:59 > 0:04:04"You're in my country, in my country!" he screamed.

0:04:04 > 0:04:07They said that, since the new president had come in,

0:04:07 > 0:04:08everything was changing.

0:04:10 > 0:04:15What do you say to the Americans who say you broke the law,

0:04:15 > 0:04:21this is fair game? Not all people are criminals.

0:04:21 > 0:04:22They should be focusing on the people that have

0:04:22 > 0:04:24a lot of problems with the law.

0:04:30 > 0:04:32TRUMP: We have to have strong borders.

0:04:32 > 0:04:36We have some bad hombres here, and we're going to get them out.

0:04:37 > 0:04:40We're at one of the busiest land borders on Earth,

0:04:40 > 0:04:42entering California.

0:04:43 > 0:04:46In President Trump's first hundred days,

0:04:46 > 0:04:5041,000 known or suspected illegal immigrants were arrested.

0:04:50 > 0:04:54Most were criminals. But is he just targeting them?

0:04:58 > 0:05:01So I've been tracking cases of families

0:05:01 > 0:05:04split by President Trump's deportations all over

0:05:04 > 0:05:05the country for months,

0:05:05 > 0:05:08and I've just heard about what sounds like a really

0:05:08 > 0:05:13disturbing case where both parents were arrested for deportation,

0:05:13 > 0:05:15leaving the children home alone.

0:05:21 > 0:05:23These are the Duarte children.

0:05:23 > 0:05:28They're going to see their parents in an immigrant detention centre.

0:05:28 > 0:05:31We haven't gone to see them since this all happened. Almost two weeks.

0:05:31 > 0:05:33Yeah, almost two weeks.

0:05:33 > 0:05:35We're just hanging in there and they know that we've got things

0:05:35 > 0:05:38under control, that I've got things under control.

0:05:38 > 0:05:42The children have never been into a place like this before.

0:05:42 > 0:05:47They were born here, US citizens, but their parents,

0:05:47 > 0:05:49Francisco Duarte Senior and Rosenda,

0:05:49 > 0:05:52have been living in the US illegally for 21 years.

0:05:54 > 0:05:56One Tuesday morning in May,

0:05:56 > 0:06:00when the children were getting ready for school, their lives changed.

0:06:00 > 0:06:02We were just sitting at the kitchen,

0:06:02 > 0:06:05listening to the radio, just talking, eating breakfast.

0:06:05 > 0:06:07There was this big commotion, I guess.

0:06:07 > 0:06:12My little sister came screaming in my room, telling me to come out.

0:06:12 > 0:06:15They just came up to my mom and they told her that she was arrested.

0:06:15 > 0:06:18And then they put handcuffs on her.

0:06:18 > 0:06:19So I came out

0:06:19 > 0:06:21and then I see my dad's already in handcuffs behind a car.

0:06:24 > 0:06:27Yarely and Aracely, 12-year-old twins,

0:06:27 > 0:06:30and their teenage brothers were left to fend for themselves.

0:06:31 > 0:06:34I wasn't even able to say goodbye to my dad.

0:06:34 > 0:06:37There was all, like, just a flurry of all the feelings

0:06:37 > 0:06:39ever happened, like,

0:06:39 > 0:06:42why is it happening? Most of all, we were just shocked.

0:06:42 > 0:06:45And we all just sat down, we just cried.

0:06:46 > 0:06:49Their parents were detained by US Border Patrol.

0:06:49 > 0:06:55The officers knew they were leaving a teenager in charge of children.

0:06:55 > 0:06:57They just asked me, "Are you Francisco?" And I was like, "Yeah."

0:06:57 > 0:06:59"So you're 19 years old?" I was like, "Yeah."

0:06:59 > 0:07:01He was like, "OK, then you can take care of things."

0:07:01 > 0:07:05I was like, "All right." They just left you here with the whole family?

0:07:05 > 0:07:07Yeah.

0:07:07 > 0:07:11That night, they all decided to sleep in the same room.

0:07:11 > 0:07:14We just decided to move into my brother's room because

0:07:14 > 0:07:15our parents weren't there,

0:07:15 > 0:07:18we just wanted to stick together as a family.

0:07:19 > 0:07:22Mark Lane, who helps local immigrants with legal matters,

0:07:22 > 0:07:26has been rallying neighbours to help the family.

0:07:26 > 0:07:29They're scared, they're sad.

0:07:29 > 0:07:32The older son, Francisco, I've seen him break down several times

0:07:32 > 0:07:33and cry.

0:07:33 > 0:07:35He's trying really hard to be the man of the house,

0:07:35 > 0:07:37but he's a young man. He's 19, but he's a young man.

0:07:37 > 0:07:39He's going to school, he's still a kid.

0:07:39 > 0:07:43The children's parents run a small family ice cream business.

0:07:43 > 0:07:46My dad has been selling ice cream for 20 years now,

0:07:46 > 0:07:48ever since he got across the border.

0:07:48 > 0:07:50My mom helps at a food drive,

0:07:50 > 0:07:53and she's an active member of her church.

0:07:53 > 0:07:56They'll be walking around, driving around, they're like, "Hey,

0:07:56 > 0:07:57"you're the ice cream man!"

0:07:59 > 0:08:02Border Patrol initially accused the parents of involvement

0:08:02 > 0:08:07in international human trafficking then dropped the accusation.

0:08:07 > 0:08:09Neither of the parents has a criminal record.

0:08:12 > 0:08:14The Duartes aren't alone.

0:08:14 > 0:08:19We heard stories of parents being arrested all along our journey.

0:08:19 > 0:08:21I can tell you that, pre-Trump,

0:08:21 > 0:08:24I was getting two to three calls a week.

0:08:24 > 0:08:26Post-Trump, I get ten to 15 calls a day.

0:08:26 > 0:08:28We have one family that we're dealing with.

0:08:28 > 0:08:29Over the last two months,

0:08:29 > 0:08:32they've taken three separate members of the family.

0:08:32 > 0:08:36So this is happening all over? It's happening all over.

0:08:36 > 0:08:41In President Trump's first 100 days, over 10,000 so-called

0:08:41 > 0:08:45undocumented immigrants without criminal records were arrested,

0:08:45 > 0:08:49more than twice as many as the year before, parents amongst them.

0:08:51 > 0:08:54Nobody wants families split.

0:08:54 > 0:08:56And the way to ensure that

0:08:56 > 0:09:00if you're a family is to not to come to this country illegally.

0:09:00 > 0:09:04Sometimes the sins of the father are visited upon the sons

0:09:04 > 0:09:06and that's unfortunate.

0:09:06 > 0:09:08But the government didn't create those sins.

0:09:08 > 0:09:12So the sons have to pay for the sins of the father?

0:09:12 > 0:09:13Um...

0:09:13 > 0:09:15I would disagree totally with that.

0:09:15 > 0:09:19It is not good public policy to rip families apart.

0:09:19 > 0:09:21You want to keep those families intact

0:09:21 > 0:09:25so they can become strong economic units within our society.

0:09:27 > 0:09:30The crackdown on the undocumented has been going on for years.

0:09:31 > 0:09:35President Obama deported around three million.

0:09:35 > 0:09:37More than any recent president.

0:09:37 > 0:09:39It was often controversial.

0:09:39 > 0:09:44But he prioritised criminals and offered some protection to parents.

0:09:46 > 0:09:50OBAMA: Felons not families. Criminals not children.

0:09:51 > 0:09:54Gang members not a mom who is working hard

0:09:54 > 0:09:56to provide for her kids.

0:09:57 > 0:09:59In a series of executive orders,

0:09:59 > 0:10:03President Trump scrapped those priorities, then removed

0:10:03 > 0:10:07protection for parents, making millions without criminal

0:10:07 > 0:10:11records as much a priority for deportation as hardened criminals.

0:10:16 > 0:10:20We headed to Los Angeles, one of the so-called sanctuary cities

0:10:20 > 0:10:22that wants to protect the undocumented.

0:10:24 > 0:10:27About a million undocumented immigrants live here.

0:10:27 > 0:10:30Most work, many raise families.

0:10:30 > 0:10:33They contribute billions to the economy.

0:10:34 > 0:10:36And here they're angry.

0:10:41 > 0:10:46In over 100 other sanctuary cities and counties too, the president's

0:10:46 > 0:10:50deportations are seen as an assault on Hispanic America.

0:10:50 > 0:10:51Shut down ICE!

0:10:51 > 0:10:55In sanctuary cities, police limit their cooperation with

0:10:55 > 0:10:59Immigration and Customs Enforcement, or ICE.

0:11:00 > 0:11:04I live in a community with a lot of folks from all over the world

0:11:04 > 0:11:07and a substantial number that are undocumented.

0:11:07 > 0:11:12We are not a police state. We are not a police country.

0:11:12 > 0:11:16We rely on cooperation with citizens for public safety.

0:11:18 > 0:11:20The president has struck back.

0:11:21 > 0:11:26TRUMP: Our order cracks down on sanctuary cities,

0:11:26 > 0:11:29empowers ICE officers to target

0:11:29 > 0:11:33and remove those who pose a threat to public safety.

0:11:34 > 0:11:37He's threatening to withhold millions of dollars for public

0:11:37 > 0:11:40programmes from the so-called sanctuary cities.

0:11:42 > 0:11:46And ICE is accused of targeting these cities in raids.

0:11:52 > 0:11:56Here, outside Los Angeles, is a major ICE operation centre.

0:11:59 > 0:12:02The reality is that in the cities that we do not have cooperation,

0:12:02 > 0:12:05we do have to go out in the communities significantly more

0:12:05 > 0:12:08than we have to in areas where we have cooperation.

0:12:08 > 0:12:09We have to knock on doors.

0:12:09 > 0:12:12So, do we target those communities?

0:12:12 > 0:12:15No, not specifically.

0:12:15 > 0:12:17But are you going to see more enforcement actions

0:12:17 > 0:12:19out in the streets in those communities?

0:12:19 > 0:12:20Absolutely.

0:12:25 > 0:12:28We headed east along the border to Arizona through

0:12:28 > 0:12:33the Sonoran Desert to a very different America.

0:12:33 > 0:12:36We are going to get the bad ones out,

0:12:36 > 0:12:38the criminals and the drug dealers.

0:12:38 > 0:12:43The day is over when they can stay in our country and wreak havoc.

0:12:44 > 0:12:47Many here support President Trump's deportation plans

0:12:47 > 0:12:50and you can see why.

0:12:50 > 0:12:54This is Pinal County on the front line of America's drugs war.

0:12:54 > 0:12:56All in these mountains,

0:12:56 > 0:13:00there's probably about 12 in these mountains alone right here.

0:13:00 > 0:13:02They sit there with binoculars and radios.

0:13:02 > 0:13:06Mexican cartels station lookouts on the hilltops here to

0:13:06 > 0:13:10guard their multibillion-dollar drug smuggling operation.

0:13:10 > 0:13:12Are they heavily armed?

0:13:12 > 0:13:17Yes. They usually have rifles. They keep AK-47s. We've had some...

0:13:17 > 0:13:19There's been some shoot-outs over here.

0:13:21 > 0:13:24There are few barriers along the border in these parts

0:13:24 > 0:13:27so drug mules just walk across,

0:13:27 > 0:13:32helping bring hundreds of tonnes of drugs into Arizona every year.

0:13:32 > 0:13:33So, what would that have been?

0:13:33 > 0:13:37So, these right here are straps that they use to carry the marijuana in.

0:13:37 > 0:13:41So that is basically a backpack, huh?

0:13:41 > 0:13:42That's a backpack.

0:13:42 > 0:13:45Arms. How much did you say goes in here?

0:13:45 > 0:13:47About 40 pounds. 40 pounds of marijuana. Mm-hm.

0:13:49 > 0:13:55Nearby we met Ken Donohue. He lives here in the heart of cartel land.

0:13:55 > 0:13:59International drug smugglers are on his doorstep.

0:13:59 > 0:14:02But there are few immigration patrols in his area

0:14:02 > 0:14:05so he's taken security into his own hands.

0:14:05 > 0:14:07A friend of mine made the sign.

0:14:07 > 0:14:10I stuck it up there just to let people realise

0:14:10 > 0:14:12that there is a gun here.

0:14:13 > 0:14:16Once, in the middle of the night, Ken heard two Mexican drug

0:14:16 > 0:14:19traffickers right underneath his bedroom window.

0:14:19 > 0:14:23I had to physically fight with one of them to get them off the place.

0:14:23 > 0:14:30The thing is, I took a shotgun and I shot it over their heads

0:14:30 > 0:14:33and I have not had one come back on the place since.

0:14:33 > 0:14:35I don't wish them any harm.

0:14:35 > 0:14:37But this is not the place for them to come.

0:14:38 > 0:14:41Ken has no qualms about getting tough on illegals.

0:14:43 > 0:14:47So, do you support President Trump's plans for mass deportation?

0:14:47 > 0:14:50I know some people that are illegal here and they're great people

0:14:50 > 0:14:52but they're illegal.

0:14:52 > 0:14:54So, yes, if they get picked up,

0:14:54 > 0:14:56they need to go back to where they came from.

0:15:00 > 0:15:03There aren't enough border patrol officers to guard every inch

0:15:03 > 0:15:07of these porous borderlands day and night.

0:15:07 > 0:15:11The shortage of manpower is a problem nationwide.

0:15:11 > 0:15:16So, how is President Trump going to deport the millions?

0:15:16 > 0:15:18TRUMP: We're going to have a deportation force.

0:15:18 > 0:15:20We're going to do it humanely.

0:15:21 > 0:15:23It's not a new idea.

0:15:24 > 0:15:29Back in 1954, President Eisenhower created his own deportation

0:15:29 > 0:15:32task force which expelled hundreds of thousands.

0:15:34 > 0:15:38President Trump wants his force to be bigger, better and different.

0:15:40 > 0:15:42We're rounding them up in a very humane way.

0:15:42 > 0:15:47I know it doesn't sound nice but not everything is nice.

0:15:49 > 0:15:53In America, police traditionally don't enforce immigration law,

0:15:53 > 0:15:56but President Trump wants to change that.

0:15:56 > 0:16:00He wants America's police to have the powers of immigration

0:16:00 > 0:16:04officers who can interrogate and detain suspected illegals.

0:16:04 > 0:16:08A giant nationwide deportation force.

0:16:08 > 0:16:11Police here are already doing their part.

0:16:11 > 0:16:15I can tell you right now, our county for the most part is very pro,

0:16:15 > 0:16:17you know, the stance we've taken,

0:16:17 > 0:16:20which is tough on immigration, border security.

0:16:20 > 0:16:22This is what the people of this county want. Do you know why?

0:16:22 > 0:16:24Because we've been affected by it.

0:16:26 > 0:16:27That night, the police show us

0:16:27 > 0:16:30how they are helping the president's deportation drive.

0:16:32 > 0:16:36A routine patrol suddenly turns into a manhunt.

0:16:36 > 0:16:38What's the vehicle we're chasing?

0:16:38 > 0:16:42We're in pursuit of a vehicle which is used for criminal traffic.

0:16:42 > 0:16:43They were pretty close.

0:16:43 > 0:16:46If you look to the right, you might have his lights over there.

0:16:51 > 0:16:55They see tracks. The runaway car went off the road.

0:16:55 > 0:16:56He went that way?

0:16:57 > 0:16:59Right there? Right here, look.

0:17:05 > 0:17:11So, the driver of this car literally either fell down this

0:17:11 > 0:17:13bank or he drove it down this bank.

0:17:13 > 0:17:14The driver has disappeared.

0:17:14 > 0:17:17They've got police dogs out down there trying to find him.

0:17:17 > 0:17:19They don't know where he is.

0:17:19 > 0:17:21Did you get the trunk?

0:17:23 > 0:17:24It's empty.

0:17:24 > 0:17:28BUZZING Don't point that at me.

0:17:28 > 0:17:32A search of the car reveals a knife, a Taser and a drugs pipe.

0:17:34 > 0:17:37Then the dogs find the suspects.

0:17:38 > 0:17:40There's a driver and a passenger.

0:17:40 > 0:17:42Entiendes ingles, cabron?

0:17:42 > 0:17:44The man has a fake US ID.

0:17:44 > 0:17:46It is a fake social security card.

0:17:46 > 0:17:48It doesn't come back to this Angel Guadalupe.

0:17:48 > 0:17:50You just checked it? Yes.

0:17:50 > 0:17:52He's illegal? He just told you that? Mm-hm. Yeah.

0:17:55 > 0:18:00The man is placed under arrest after police find a stash of illegal IDs.

0:18:00 > 0:18:04Millions of Americans have their identities stolen each year

0:18:04 > 0:18:08and cartels run human trafficking operations in this area,

0:18:08 > 0:18:13all part of the illegal immigrant crime that President Trump's

0:18:13 > 0:18:15supporters hope he will end.

0:18:16 > 0:18:21He has multiple identifications on him from fraudulent names,

0:18:21 > 0:18:23and fraudulent social securities.

0:18:23 > 0:18:25Everything indicates right now that

0:18:25 > 0:18:28he's in the United States illegally.

0:18:28 > 0:18:30The man is headed for jail.

0:18:30 > 0:18:33Most police in America wouldn't be able to hold him

0:18:33 > 0:18:37for immigration offences but here they can.

0:18:37 > 0:18:38What will happen to him now?

0:18:38 > 0:18:41He will have a detainer put on him, an ICE detainer,

0:18:41 > 0:18:42an immigration detainer.

0:18:42 > 0:18:45An immigration detainer means basically you contact

0:18:45 > 0:18:47the immigration people and they... Yes.

0:18:47 > 0:18:50You hand him over, effectively. Yep.

0:18:50 > 0:18:54This is the model President Trump wants to see adopted nationwide.

0:18:57 > 0:19:02But very few police departments in America have signed up so far.

0:19:03 > 0:19:07Many are worried their communities will stop trusting them.

0:19:07 > 0:19:11If police officers become ICE agents, I will tell you,

0:19:11 > 0:19:14you will see deserted streets, you will see crimes happening,

0:19:14 > 0:19:16crimes being unreported,

0:19:16 > 0:19:20you will see the underground in our society swell.

0:19:20 > 0:19:23You will see people running and living underground.

0:19:27 > 0:19:29We drove on towards Texas

0:19:29 > 0:19:33and the Rio Grande Valley, where fear is already setting in.

0:19:36 > 0:19:39Major roads in and out have long had internal immigration

0:19:39 > 0:19:41checkpoints here, rare in America.

0:20:05 > 0:20:08Texas is home to over ten million Hispanics.

0:20:08 > 0:20:12Everyone in this area seems to know someone who's undocumented.

0:20:13 > 0:20:16In some parts of this state recently there has been a dramatic

0:20:16 > 0:20:21drop in crimes reported because of a new state law that's been passed.

0:20:23 > 0:20:26We pass out these leaflets - Know Your Rights.

0:20:26 > 0:20:28For example, if ICE knocks on your door,

0:20:28 > 0:20:30you don't have to open the door.

0:20:30 > 0:20:34Gaby Zavala, a community organiser, is going house to house telling

0:20:34 > 0:20:36people their rights.

0:20:36 > 0:20:40The new state law here has made it a crime for police departments

0:20:40 > 0:20:43to refuse to work with immigration.

0:20:43 > 0:20:47Now it's widely expected that police officers all over Texas will start

0:20:47 > 0:20:51demanding immigration papers from Hispanics they stop

0:20:51 > 0:20:53in the course of their duties.

0:20:54 > 0:20:57So these are some information that we are passing out.

0:20:57 > 0:21:01Basically it's a warning for people that are travelling to Texas.

0:21:01 > 0:21:04It says, "All travellers, including US citizens,

0:21:04 > 0:21:08"if they travel to Texas, they might encounter illegal arrest,

0:21:08 > 0:21:11"racial profiling, demands to show your papers."

0:21:11 > 0:21:13People need to know that this is a racist law,

0:21:13 > 0:21:15that this is a discriminatory law.

0:21:17 > 0:21:22This new law is not yet in effect and is being challenged.

0:21:22 > 0:21:26But alarm about the anti-immigrant mood has changed life here.

0:21:28 > 0:21:31People have been going to the doctors less,

0:21:31 > 0:21:36have not really gone out grocery shopping as much as they used to.

0:21:40 > 0:21:44Maria has lived here in Brownsville ever since she crossed the border

0:21:44 > 0:21:46illegally in the '90s.

0:21:46 > 0:21:50She's always lived openly, gone to the shops, the parks.

0:21:51 > 0:21:54But nowadays, well before dusk, Maria and her neighbours

0:21:54 > 0:21:57retreat inside, a self-imposed curfew.

0:22:00 > 0:22:03TRANSLATION: At around 7pm, people are no longer on the streets.

0:22:03 > 0:22:04There is nothing.

0:22:04 > 0:22:08Everyone locks their doors. They're scared.

0:22:08 > 0:22:12We close everything. We close doors, we close blinds.

0:22:12 > 0:22:13It looks like a wasteland.

0:22:16 > 0:22:20Maria has a 16-year-old daughter. Stephanie has cerebral palsy.

0:22:22 > 0:22:26She also has high temperatures that the doctors here can't explain.

0:22:26 > 0:22:28Her local doctor says it's urgent

0:22:28 > 0:22:32she sees a specialist in a town 160 miles away.

0:22:34 > 0:22:38We're scared that her condition is going to deteriorate.

0:22:39 > 0:22:43All the doctors say it's important that we take her to

0:22:43 > 0:22:46Corpus Christi to get specialist treatment.

0:22:48 > 0:22:50But to take Stephanie to the specialist,

0:22:50 > 0:22:54Maria would have to drive past police and cross the checkpoint.

0:22:54 > 0:22:56She's too scared.

0:22:57 > 0:23:00What I'm scared of is that I'll cross a checkpoint

0:23:00 > 0:23:03and then who is going to take care of my children?

0:23:04 > 0:23:08How do you feel about President Trump's policies

0:23:08 > 0:23:13that the law of the land is that illegals have to go back?

0:23:13 > 0:23:18We don't kill. We don't steal. We don't murder.

0:23:18 > 0:23:21And we're not drug dealers.

0:23:21 > 0:23:24We just simply want a better future for our families

0:23:24 > 0:23:27and that's why we came to the United States.

0:23:29 > 0:23:33Word is out. Trump's America is no place for illegals.

0:23:34 > 0:23:37TRUMP: We will use the best technology,

0:23:37 > 0:23:42including above- and below-ground sensors,

0:23:42 > 0:23:45towers, aerial surveillance

0:23:45 > 0:23:51and manpower to supplement the wall and keep out criminal cartels.

0:23:53 > 0:23:57We went on dawn patrol with border guards,

0:23:57 > 0:24:00flying over the Rio Grande that forms the border here.

0:24:13 > 0:24:16Until recently, the cartels here have been brazen,

0:24:16 > 0:24:19running drugs across the border in broad daylight.

0:24:26 > 0:24:27But after hours in the air,

0:24:27 > 0:24:30we hadn't seen one immigrant crossing.

0:24:30 > 0:24:32The president's tough stance has created what

0:24:32 > 0:24:34they call here the Trump effect.

0:25:01 > 0:25:05President Trump is often portrayed by his detractors as ineffectual,

0:25:05 > 0:25:07chaotic, embattled,

0:25:07 > 0:25:11but he's been effective on reducing illegal immigration.

0:25:11 > 0:25:14Donald Trump was elected to do something.

0:25:14 > 0:25:18He's doing by and large what he promised to do.

0:25:18 > 0:25:22We open our arms to people who want to come here

0:25:22 > 0:25:25but when you reward people who come in through the back door

0:25:25 > 0:25:29you are punishing people who come in through the front door.

0:25:29 > 0:25:31And I don't think we ever should punish people

0:25:31 > 0:25:34who comply with the rules.

0:25:34 > 0:25:37Until President Trump, many politicians across

0:25:37 > 0:25:41the political divide agreed criminals should be prioritised

0:25:41 > 0:25:43for deportation.

0:25:43 > 0:25:45But Democrats and Republicans disagree

0:25:45 > 0:25:47about how to handle the rest.

0:25:47 > 0:25:51If you want to get rid of undocumenteds, I have the answer.

0:25:51 > 0:25:56Give them the ability to become legalised workers.

0:25:56 > 0:26:00If all you've been doing for the last few years is working hard,

0:26:00 > 0:26:04supporting a family, being a respected member of the community,

0:26:04 > 0:26:09why not give you the opportunity to live legally with a green card?

0:26:12 > 0:26:14This is where the wall would end,

0:26:14 > 0:26:17about half an hour from where Maria lives.

0:26:18 > 0:26:21Without a border, President Trump says you don't have a country.

0:26:21 > 0:26:24But what kind of country is he creating?

0:26:37 > 0:26:40Gaby is now discussing a difficult step with Maria,

0:26:40 > 0:26:44signing an agreement for a relative to take custody of Maria's

0:26:44 > 0:26:48children if she's deported, so they don't end up in foster care.

0:26:48 > 0:26:52We are aware of hundreds of cases of parents making custody

0:26:52 > 0:26:54plans for their children nationwide.

0:26:54 > 0:26:57For years politicians in America have failed to solve

0:26:57 > 0:27:00the problem of the undocumented millions.

0:27:00 > 0:27:03But has President Trump's approach crossed a line?

0:27:04 > 0:27:07Splitting up families has been happening.

0:27:07 > 0:27:11Is enforcing the policy of this administration

0:27:11 > 0:27:13inhumane in your view?

0:27:13 > 0:27:16There's not much of a choice when it comes to forcing the law.

0:27:16 > 0:27:19At times there's going to be families that are separated.

0:27:19 > 0:27:22It's very, very difficult, especially for the children,

0:27:22 > 0:27:25but the reality is that our officers are very professional

0:27:25 > 0:27:27and they're going to enforce the law.

0:27:29 > 0:27:30Back in San Diego,

0:27:30 > 0:27:34the Duarte children are on their way home from the detention centre.

0:27:34 > 0:27:37They had been able to see their parents for a short time

0:27:37 > 0:27:40but only over a video link.

0:27:40 > 0:27:41The father broke down.

0:27:43 > 0:27:45I was in there and my little sisters asked

0:27:45 > 0:27:47if they could sing a song and my dad said, "Of course."

0:27:47 > 0:27:50And they started singing their songs and my dad,

0:27:50 > 0:27:55you could just see tears going down his cheeks and me as well.

0:27:57 > 0:27:58Since we filmed with them,

0:27:58 > 0:28:01the Duartes' mother has been released on bail.

0:28:01 > 0:28:03Their father is still locked up.

0:28:03 > 0:28:05Both face deportation.

0:28:06 > 0:28:11The children, American citizens, never thought it would come to this.

0:28:11 > 0:28:14I think it's important to speak out about this so that this doesn't

0:28:14 > 0:28:17become normal, like, "Oh, this happened to my uncle once.

0:28:17 > 0:28:18"This happened to my father."

0:28:18 > 0:28:22I don't want this to happen on a regular basis where kids or

0:28:22 > 0:28:25teenagers or adults are just torn apart from their family.

0:28:28 > 0:28:31But something has shifted in this country.

0:28:32 > 0:28:34Few have ever heard of the Duartes.

0:28:34 > 0:28:38And millions whose presence has been tolerated for years

0:28:38 > 0:28:42are no longer welcome in this new America.

0:29:10 > 0:29:12SHOUTING

0:29:12 > 0:29:15Young generation, when they get mad,

0:29:15 > 0:29:17the first thing they do is grab a gun.

0:29:17 > 0:29:20There's a lot of questions that needs to be answered.
