0:00:33 > 0:00:36And to make sure Northern Ireland takes its rightful place

0:00:39 > 0:00:42Throughout my life I've always fought for progress

0:00:42 > 0:00:44as a member of the SDLP.

0:00:44 > 0:00:46I joined the party

0:00:46 > 0:00:48when we were delivering a real revolution

0:00:48 > 0:00:52in Irish politics, one which ended conflict and built peace.

0:00:52 > 0:00:54The hope of that era was astounding.

0:00:54 > 0:00:57Across the North there was a real sense

0:00:57 > 0:00:59that we had the world at our feet,

0:00:59 > 0:01:02that we could build a society which matched the work ethic

0:01:02 > 0:01:04and spirit of all who lived here,

0:01:04 > 0:01:08where respect was guaranteed for all, regardless of religion or race,

0:01:08 > 0:01:11and where opportunity was more about what you did

0:01:11 > 0:01:12and how well you did it,

0:01:12 > 0:01:14not about where you came from.

0:01:15 > 0:01:17But it hasn't worked out.

0:01:17 > 0:01:20It wasn't meant to be like this.

0:01:20 > 0:01:23Today, we have a failing government,

0:01:23 > 0:01:25which cuts investment and third-level education

0:01:25 > 0:01:27while spending hundreds of millions of pounds

0:01:27 > 0:01:30slashing civil servant jobs.

0:01:30 > 0:01:33A failing government which does nothing to support

0:01:33 > 0:01:35the thousands of young workers

0:01:35 > 0:01:39who go abroad each and every year to find work.

0:01:39 > 0:01:43A failing government which hands tough decisions on welfare payments

0:01:43 > 0:01:46to the meanest group of Tory politicians ever to govern.

0:01:50 > 0:01:55I got into politics to stop failure, and to build a better future.

0:01:55 > 0:01:57That's why I ran for election aged 22,

0:01:57 > 0:02:00that's why I worked hard to make Derry a City of Culture

0:02:00 > 0:02:02as its youngest ever mayor,

0:02:02 > 0:02:06and that's why I ran to become leader of the SDLP.

0:02:06 > 0:02:09Join us, and build a better future.

0:02:09 > 0:02:12A future where our position in Europe is secure.

0:02:12 > 0:02:14We don't want checkpoints back on our borders.

0:02:14 > 0:02:17A future where investment in education and apprenticeships

0:02:17 > 0:02:19matches the ambition of our young people.

0:02:19 > 0:02:22Where the creation of decent jobs is government's priority

0:02:22 > 0:02:24and wealth is enjoyed by everyone.

0:02:24 > 0:02:28A future where childcare is affordable and accessible.

0:02:28 > 0:02:30A future where wellness

0:02:30 > 0:02:35and mental health services are prioritised, and world-class.

0:02:35 > 0:02:38A future where the infrastructure and the investment matches

0:02:38 > 0:02:42the needs of the people, and not the pet projects of the politicians.
