0:00:10 > 0:00:14In the beginning, Northern Ireland had a parliament.
0:00:14 > 0:00:19Elections were by majority rule, so the party that came out on top
0:00:19 > 0:00:22was the only party to form the government.
0:00:22 > 0:00:26But some groups didn't want to shape the future through politics.
0:00:26 > 0:00:30They chose terrorism, preferring the bomb and the bullet,
0:00:30 > 0:00:34trying to destroy Northern Ireland and its people.
0:00:34 > 0:00:36And another group was trying to ride both horses.
0:00:38 > 0:00:41It got so bad, Stormont was shelved by Westminster,
0:00:41 > 0:00:46and the power to shape our future was returned to London in 1972.
0:00:46 > 0:00:52That opened a chapter of direct rule that lasted a quarter of a century.
0:00:52 > 0:00:55The Ulster Unionist Party argued long and hard
0:00:55 > 0:00:57to return the power to the people.
0:00:58 > 0:01:02Others refused to help, opting to stand outside the gates,
0:01:02 > 0:01:07screaming, "Traitor!" and, "Lundy!" and, "Never, never, never!"
0:01:07 > 0:01:10We helped turn the corner that created the environment
0:01:10 > 0:01:13to encourage everybody into the political tent,
0:01:13 > 0:01:17ending the wholesale violence that was destroying our wee country.
0:01:19 > 0:01:22The last thing we needed then was an official opposition.
0:01:22 > 0:01:25Back then, it was all about sharing power
0:01:25 > 0:01:27and finding common cause.
0:01:28 > 0:01:32But since we started this leg of our journey in 1998,
0:01:32 > 0:01:34our circumstances have changed.
0:01:34 > 0:01:37The multiparty coalitions failed to deliver.
0:01:37 > 0:01:40The bigger parties used the smaller ones for cover
0:01:40 > 0:01:42when things went wrong.
0:01:43 > 0:01:48It became clear to us it was time to open the next chapter -
0:01:48 > 0:01:51the chapter called official opposition.
0:01:51 > 0:01:54It was time for the Ulster Unionist Party to show leadership again
0:01:54 > 0:01:57by taking another big mature step
0:01:57 > 0:02:00towards more normal politics for Northern Ireland.
0:02:01 > 0:02:06As a party of opposition, we will do two things to make politics better.
0:02:06 > 0:02:09We will scrutinise the words and actions
0:02:09 > 0:02:12of this DUP/Sinn Fein Executive,
0:02:12 > 0:02:14and we will offer an alternative
0:02:14 > 0:02:16where the Executive is failing to deliver,
0:02:16 > 0:02:19as we have done with our vision for Northern Ireland
0:02:19 > 0:02:21outside the European Union.
0:02:21 > 0:02:24The Ulster Unionist Party is determined that our journey
0:02:24 > 0:02:27will take us to a post-sectarian society
0:02:27 > 0:02:30where the issue is no longer identity
0:02:30 > 0:02:34but who can deliver on the economy, education,
0:02:34 > 0:02:36on health and on housing.
0:02:36 > 0:02:38Who can you trust?
0:02:38 > 0:02:40Who is in it for the greater good?
0:02:43 > 0:02:47We are, and it's called doing what's right for Northern Ireland.
