:02:25. > :02:36.a promoter and a gang member. He is also a father
:02:37. > :02:39.and an Iraq war veteran. When I'm passing through certain

:02:42. > :02:44.in that neighbourhood, tension, you got to hurry up and get
:02:45. > :02:48.from point A to point B. You can't just be cruising
:02:49. > :02:54.through neighbourhoods that Nine times out of ten,

:03:15. > :03:31.no difference here. The last day without a shooting
:03:32. > :03:39.or murder was February 2015. The sad fact is that for some,
:03:40. > :03:42.a life of drugs and violence has now The real tragedy about
:03:43. > :03:46.Chicago is just how common In reality, most gun
:03:47. > :03:55.crime in America actually does not really happen
:03:56. > :03:57.in the massacres that garner large-scale media attention,
:03:58. > :03:59.but they take place in isolated spots like this in inner-city
:04:00. > :04:01.America. And more often than not,
:04:02. > :04:03.the victims are young, black and their cases
:04:04. > :04:07.are largely ignored. The violence swirls around west
:04:08. > :04:10.and southside Chicago. A few weeks ago, six-year-old
:04:11. > :04:12.Takara Morgan was wounded Some say they're forced into a life
:04:13. > :04:20.of violence, but even those who don't walk that path,
:04:21. > :04:25.like Takara, are still affected. How common is it,
:04:26. > :04:27.the shooting around here? I tell you the truth,
:04:28. > :04:38.I am really scared for my kids. Childhood ends early
:04:39. > :04:40.on the southside. A party on Duwop's block
:04:41. > :04:42.commemorates his best friend The residents meet to remember
:04:43. > :04:49.and also to forget. The police authority don't
:04:50. > :04:51.like exactly what we do We actually don't like
:04:52. > :04:58.the way that we live. But when you're pushed into a way
:04:59. > :05:01.of life, when you're forced into a way of life,
:05:02. > :05:07.how else can you live? Even though we love the 'hood,
:05:08. > :05:11.outside looking in, it looks We want to be out
:05:12. > :05:16.of the 'hood, though. That is why we work so hard
:05:17. > :05:19.at showing our potential. Because we want to leave
:05:20. > :05:22.this place, for good. Duwop's family home is now
:05:23. > :05:26.abandoned, a place to record a music video, and a place where drug
:05:27. > :05:29.addicts go to get high. Here in my neighbourhood,
:05:30. > :05:36.they start young, man. When you read the news headlines,
:05:37. > :05:39.that is the age frame, they are all We got to teach the kids how
:05:40. > :05:49.to defend themselves. It is senseless violence at the end
:05:50. > :05:52.of the day, but it's like, what do you do when you are caught
:05:53. > :05:55.in that moment? Would you rather be caught
:05:56. > :05:57.with protection or without? We had a lot of guns,
:05:58. > :06:01.but I have never seen Bo Deal is a rapper
:06:02. > :06:07.from the westside, now the most He is a member of
:06:08. > :06:11.the Vice Lords gang. He has been in prison and even
:06:12. > :06:16.he is shocked by what is happening. It is like somebody dropped off
:06:17. > :06:19.crates of guns in everybody's hood. I think that lots of guys need
:06:20. > :06:30.to die in order to make it better. I think some of these BLEEP need
:06:31. > :06:33.to be killed and knocked off, to get them out of the way,
:06:34. > :06:44.to make it a better place. More people have been killed here
:06:45. > :06:47.since 2001 then US deaths in Iraq and Afghanistan combined. And yet
:06:48. > :06:50.there is almost no outcry. To be honest, I have got a son
:06:51. > :06:56.that is seven and a daughter I have not taught neither one
:06:57. > :07:00.of them how to ride a bike yet. Because the environment
:07:01. > :07:03.they live in is not safe. It's hard when you don't
:07:04. > :07:19.really have help. We are put in a weird position,
:07:20. > :07:35.you know what I'm saying? This is a never-ending cycle,
:07:36. > :07:43.there is no way out We are just trying to cope
:07:44. > :07:50.with this BLEEP. With so many guns and so little
:07:51. > :08:23.control, the murders will rise, It is a race against time for
:08:24. > :08:27.scientists working in the French Alps. They are trying to extract
:08:28. > :08:34.samples from some of the world's most rapidly shrinking glaciers.
:08:35. > :08:38.Scientists hope that the samples could provide unique clues to help
:08:39. > :08:40.fight lowball warming. Victoria Gill travelled to the French Alps to join
:08:41. > :08:47.them. Approaching a very high altitude
:08:48. > :08:52.laboratory. This team of scientists is living and working on the glacier
:08:53. > :08:56.here because climate change is heating and changing the ice that
:08:57. > :09:01.they are camped on. So the team wants to rescue the information
:09:02. > :09:06.locked deep in the ice before it disappears. Snowfalls will collect
:09:07. > :09:17.all the impurities in the atmosphere and this will be stored in the
:09:18. > :09:23.glacier, like pages in a book. When you go through this book, you can
:09:24. > :09:27.read all this information. This is a frozen library, tiny air bubbles
:09:28. > :09:35.locked inside this glacial ice, a record of our past climate. The team
:09:36. > :09:38.will cut that and move it into this tent and then store it in an ice
:09:39. > :09:45.cave, which is their mountain freezer. A bit slippery! So precious
:09:46. > :09:49.are these samples that the team has dug into the solid ice to build a
:09:50. > :10:01.store room that will keep them cold. But they won't be here long. Six
:10:02. > :10:05.cores a box. And then they are ready to go? This is the beginning of a
:10:06. > :10:11.very long journey for these ice cores. They will be stored here in
:10:12. > :10:14.France for two years but there are ultimate destination is the world's
:10:15. > :10:18.most reliable freezer, Antarctica. The idea of getting ice transported
:10:19. > :10:24.to Antarctica could sound very silly to people but it makes a lot of
:10:25. > :10:28.sense for us. Our aim is to be able to store these ice cores for decades
:10:29. > :10:35.to centuries. You put them there and they are in the safest position you
:10:36. > :10:38.can think about. Many glaciers here and all over the world are changing
:10:39. > :10:47.and retreating. This ambitious project aims to preserve bubbles and
:10:48. > :10:54.bacteria trapped in the ice, allowing scientists to track our
:10:55. > :10:58.planet's atmosphere and its future. That is all from Reporters for this
:10:59. > :11:11.week, so from me, goodbye for now. Hello there. For the bulk of the UK
:11:12. > :11:13.has been dry, pretty sunny, not a bad end to the weekend. However, we
:11:14. > :11:15.have got trouble
