:00:00. > :00:00.and a teenager have been arrested after the murder of a teenager. It

:00:00. > :00:24.is now time for Reporters. Hello and welcome to Reporters. From

:00:25. > :00:28.here in the world 's newsroom we send out correspondence to bring you

:00:29. > :00:34.the best stories from across the globe. This week: we investigate

:00:35. > :00:47.allegations of shocking abuses at one of South Africa's most dangerous

:00:48. > :00:55.prisons. Secret soldiers ` Iran's Covert at liberty is inside Syria.

:00:56. > :01:07.Our man in Moscow `50 years since the BBC first sent a reporter to

:01:08. > :01:13.Russia, how different is it? And, Halloween, Hollywood style. We

:01:14. > :01:26.joined the freaks who come out at nightfall fright night. `` at

:01:27. > :01:30.nightfall fright night. A British security firm has been accused of

:01:31. > :01:35.shocking abuses at one of South Africa's most dangerous prisons.

:01:36. > :01:47.Authorities have temporarily taken over the running of Mangaung prison

:01:48. > :01:53.from G4S Co. The company blames the unrest on a labour dispute. A

:01:54. > :02:00.warning, you may find this report disturbing. The bloody aftermath of

:02:01. > :02:05.another gang fight inside one of South Africa's most dangerous

:02:06. > :02:19.prison. This is Mangaung, maximum security jail. The company from

:02:20. > :02:25.Britain, G4S has been in charge. But today, we can reveal claims from

:02:26. > :02:29.inmates and guards of a crisis of widespread abuses, including

:02:30. > :02:34.allegations of electric shock and forced injection. This video, filmed

:02:35. > :02:42.for official records by security guards, shows an inmate after a

:02:43. > :02:53.fight with another inmate. Listen to the clicking sounds in the

:02:54. > :02:58.background. It is alleged that those electric shocks being administered

:02:59. > :03:03.to at least one other prisoner who screams in pain and begs for it to

:03:04. > :03:10.stop. A former prisoner told us he had been soaked with water then shot

:03:11. > :03:16.until he passed out as a punishment. When you are complaining, they are

:03:17. > :03:24.big demise in you. An investigation and the wits just as project has

:03:25. > :03:30.learnt powerful antipsychotic drugs were being administered. One race a

:03:31. > :03:35.complaint about food. He was tied of having Viennas, which is a type of

:03:36. > :03:45.sausage and wanted meat. The supervisor came in and he was taken

:03:46. > :03:49.to the medical section. The point making, if you are going to

:03:50. > :03:55.complain, and you will suffer consequences. Over 300 guards were

:03:56. > :04:00.sacked by G4S after going on an unofficial strike alleging that the

:04:01. > :04:08.abuse of prisoner was routine. He asked for his identity to be

:04:09. > :04:13.concealed for safety. We threw water so the electricity could work

:04:14. > :04:28.nicely. Then we shot them, again and again. We want them to be afraid of

:04:29. > :04:35.us. `` then we shocked them. That is the only way you felt you could

:04:36. > :04:39.control the prisoners? Yes. Earlier this month, South African

:04:40. > :04:42.authorities moved in to seize control from G4S. They said

:04:43. > :04:51.conditions were shocking and inhumane. That the situation was out

:04:52. > :04:53.of control. But G4S has denied any wrongdoing and questioned the

:04:54. > :05:00.credibility of those of alleging abuse. The comments that a lot of

:05:01. > :05:10.these accusations are based off are coming from the criminals. That does

:05:11. > :05:13.not mean that you not warrant investigation. If there is anything

:05:14. > :05:20.that merits investigation, we will investigate. With complete

:05:21. > :05:28.transparency. If there were these times of extreme abuses, it would be

:05:29. > :05:35.thou for all to see. If they happened, I have not been made aware

:05:36. > :05:41.of it. But a leaked government report shows concerns were being

:05:42. > :05:50.raised three years ago. A new investigation into the alleged

:05:51. > :05:54.abuses here is now under way. It was a brutal chapter in Sri Lanka's

:05:55. > :06:00.turbulent past. In the last remark of its civil war, 40,000 people were

:06:01. > :06:02.killed, tens of thousands more simply disappeared with their

:06:03. > :06:05.families are still left in the dark. When international enquiry was

:06:06. > :06:09.set up to find out exactly what happened but the Sri Lankan

:06:10. > :06:16.government says it has no intention of cooperating with it. The Foreign

:06:17. > :06:21.Minister told BBC, the government's own enquiry are quite enough. A

:06:22. > :06:27.warning, this report contains graphic descriptions of torture. In

:06:28. > :06:31.the north, the young are marching to welcome the Kommer was. A local

:06:32. > :06:38.television station organised the rally. They part of the giant

:06:39. > :06:43.memorial celebrating the army 's victory over the Tamil Tigers. Now

:06:44. > :06:50.peace reigns. The State projects it self as firm about the nine. These

:06:51. > :06:57.are civil defence members, tumble's employed by the government. To

:06:58. > :07:00.provide local security. TRANSLATION: At the moment, the situation is

:07:01. > :07:06.good. The government has given us job, we are to carry on with our

:07:07. > :07:12.daily life happily. Infrastructure is being repaired. Then the first

:07:13. > :07:17.provincial elections in decades as part of what the government calls it

:07:18. > :07:21.reconciliation agenda ` sample thousand Tamil Tigers have been

:07:22. > :07:26.released. But challenging the official narrative is evidence of UN

:07:27. > :07:30.investigators and major human rights organisations which describe a

:07:31. > :07:33.country bled repression is widespread and the security forces

:07:34. > :07:40.can act with impunity. We have spoken with some of those who allege

:07:41. > :07:45.state brutality. Because they fear reprisal, we have agreed to protect

:07:46. > :07:47.their identity. Allegations of torture have been levelled at

:07:48. > :07:52.successive governments here but under the current distraction, at

:07:53. > :07:56.this say the crimes of repression have deepened. During the war, this

:07:57. > :08:03.man was detained on terrorism charges. He said he was tortured to

:08:04. > :08:10.obtain a confession. TRANSLATION: They had me up naked and beat me

:08:11. > :08:13.with iron rods. They burnt meat with cigarettes. Four of five people

:08:14. > :08:27.would squeeze my subpoenas. Every time they asked a question, they

:08:28. > :08:31.would squeeze my testicles. We travelled to a safe house where we

:08:32. > :08:39.met a former competent who is being on the run for four months. She

:08:40. > :08:47.alleges BT, sexual assault. `` beatings. TRANSLATION: Do not want

:08:48. > :08:51.to be sexually molested by the army. If they take me, I know I will be

:08:52. > :08:58.tortured and I will not come back again. They keep these tablets

:08:59. > :09:06.because I do not want to be raped again. She asked me who was going to

:09:07. > :09:13.protect? For now, she will be hiding in this safe house in the long`term,

:09:14. > :09:20.what guarantees are there? The people she is terrified of art that

:09:21. > :09:28.people who run the law. The Tamil Tigers have been accused of using

:09:29. > :09:31.civilians as human shields. Sri Lanka's Foreign Minister in cysts

:09:32. > :09:35.enquiries established by the government are Independent, not as

:09:36. > :09:43.human right groups claim a whitewash. It is our intention to

:09:44. > :09:48.appoint an Independent investigative body. It is something that has

:09:49. > :09:58.already happened and is ongoing. There are circumstances which

:09:59. > :10:04.warrant investigation. If there is any attempt to set up an

:10:05. > :10:12.international operation you will not cooperate? There is no reason to do

:10:13. > :10:17.this. It is entirely without justification. There is peace of a

:10:18. > :10:21.kind in the north but it is accompanied by the silence of

:10:22. > :10:28.absences, of unanswered questions and of fear. From the outside, it

:10:29. > :10:33.seemed that most of the world, with the exception of Russia and China,

:10:34. > :10:37.is lined up against the Syrian authorities but we have evidence of

:10:38. > :10:43.that foreign forces, specifically Iranian soldiers, are inside Syria

:10:44. > :10:52.fighting alongside resident Assad's trips. It says it is Assistant ``

:10:53. > :10:59.assisting Damascus. When rebels captured her camera, evidence of the

:11:00. > :11:09.true scope of the covert activity in Syria became much clearer.

:11:10. > :11:12.This story starts in September. A group of Syrian rebel said the

:11:13. > :11:18.captured video footage after a battle. The stick proved Iranian

:11:19. > :11:21.armed forces were on the ground on Syria and supporting the Assad

:11:22. > :11:26.regime. The captured footage was filmed by a cameraman who was in bed

:11:27. > :11:31.with some Iranian Revolutionary guards. Its authenticity has been

:11:32. > :11:35.verified IBB to experts. This is the first time all of the material has

:11:36. > :11:39.been pieced together. It is likely it was never intended for public

:11:40. > :11:45.broadcast. But what some sort of internal Iranian Revolutionary

:11:46. > :11:48.project. When you watch the footage, becomes obvious that despite the

:11:49. > :11:53.repeated denials, Iran is secretly playing a greater role in helping

:11:54. > :11:59.turn the tide of the war back in favour of the Assad regime. In this

:12:00. > :12:04.segment, the cameraman is being driven to the Iranian alert in

:12:05. > :12:10.southern Aleppo. The men on the right`hand side is a revolutionary

:12:11. > :12:15.Gaizka Mendieta. He scored Ismail Heydari. The captured footage shows

:12:16. > :12:22.the Iranian instructing a new militia. The National Defence Force.

:12:23. > :12:41.It seems the National Defence Force is not trained on the ground in

:12:42. > :12:46.Syria. The Revolutionary guards are not just providing training. They

:12:47. > :13:18.also engage in behind the lines combat operations.

:13:19. > :13:26.The sun rises over Aleppo. This will not be a peaceful day. Reports are

:13:27. > :13:28.coming in a force of rebels is moving in on a nearby regime

:13:29. > :13:38.stronghold, known as a poultry farm. This is a military emergency.

:13:39. > :13:44.Two fighters `` truckloads of fighters had to the poultry farmers

:13:45. > :13:54.fast as they can. There are about 40 fighters gathered here. All of these

:13:55. > :13:57.men, then an attack is coming. Ismail Heydari secured the

:13:58. > :14:03.right`hand flank of the battlefield. At first glance, the Iranian group

:14:04. > :14:17.looks for a fight. Then Ismail Heydari sports movement on the

:14:18. > :14:22.horizon. Go `` spots. There are far more than just three rebels. This

:14:23. > :14:26.footage was filmed by the rebels' and cameraman. The rebels vote

:14:27. > :14:30.outnumber the squad of Ismail Heydari. They have heavy weapons,

:14:31. > :14:49.including this tank. The Iranians are heading into an ambush. The

:14:50. > :15:03.others try to retreat. It is too late. These are the last images that

:15:04. > :15:10.are filmed. Two days later, Ismail Heydari is buried with military

:15:11. > :15:14.honours in Iran. Its final confirmation of his important role

:15:15. > :15:18.in the Revolutionary guards. Despite Tehran's continued denials of

:15:19. > :15:25.military involvement, the story of Ismail Heydari has shone a light

:15:26. > :15:31.onto Iran's David Wall in Syria. He was the man who went into the

:15:32. > :15:35.cold. 50 years ago, Erik De Mauny became the BBC's first resident

:15:36. > :15:38.Moscow correspondent after the commonest authorities eased

:15:39. > :15:49.censorship. It gave many people their first things of life behind

:15:50. > :15:58.the Iron Curtain. Reporting on the fall of the.... We look back on the

:15:59. > :16:04.events. It was the BBC's Russian Revolution.

:16:05. > :16:09.50 years ago, Erik De Mauny became the BBC's first resident

:16:10. > :16:12.correspondent in Moscow. The soviet union had relaxed censorship. Erik

:16:13. > :16:21.De Mauny was allowed to hide the Iron Curtain. Erik De Mauny once

:16:22. > :16:25.said he felt exhilaration when he arrived here. Reports from Russia in

:16:26. > :16:31.1963, it was challenging to say the least. Then, foreign correspondence

:16:32. > :16:34.were not about to trouble if you kilometres outside of Moscow without

:16:35. > :16:39.special commission. They had choice of where they could live. Getting to

:16:40. > :16:47.know the area was difficult with the KGB briefing on your Mac. Coverage

:16:48. > :16:50.was not all Cold War. I'm no expert in the technical points. What my

:16:51. > :16:56.wife along. We will watch the show together. What strikes you about it

:16:57. > :17:01.most? The Moscow model house has reduced well`designed male ``

:17:02. > :17:08.clothing. An excellent men's clothing. At the microphone, Erik De

:17:09. > :17:17.Mauny was always calm and cool. Sometimes, very cool. Off camera,

:17:18. > :17:22.his life in Moscow was as thrilling as a John le Carre novel. One of the

:17:23. > :17:28.many adventures he had took place right here. This is the residents of

:17:29. > :17:36.the British Ambassador in Moscow. It is to be the British embassy

:17:37. > :17:39.building. This is where Erik De Mauny can one morning after he

:17:40. > :17:47.landed a giant skipper. He tracked down a spy, Kim Philby, who defected

:17:48. > :17:50.to the USSR. They spent six hours 20 together the night before. Erik De

:17:51. > :17:56.Mauny to fight `` decides not to file the sort to London. He

:17:57. > :18:00.scribbles down on a piece of paper, I just met Kim Philby. Sort you want

:18:01. > :18:06.to know about it. He spoke to the Ambassador. A couple of days later,

:18:07. > :18:11.Erik De Mauny is at home, walking across the courtyard of his

:18:12. > :18:14.apartment block. Suddenly, somebody had him a lot. It is from the

:18:15. > :18:21.British and that about Kim Philby. London advisers, break of contact.

:18:22. > :18:29.50 years on, Moscow correspondent are still chasing spies, like Anna

:18:30. > :18:32.Chapman. After all, espionage in and when the Cold War did. When I read

:18:33. > :18:38.Erik De Mauny's memoirs, what struck me most was what has not changed

:18:39. > :18:42.here in 50 years. It is still at times harder to deal with

:18:43. > :18:45.officialdom. Many Russian officials still seem deeply suspicious of

:18:46. > :18:55.Western journalists. We try to do our jobs. Reporting on Russia.

:18:56. > :19:00.Hollywood has a special place in its heart for Halloween. It is the best

:19:01. > :19:04.time of year for make`up artists as everyone wants to be transformed for

:19:05. > :19:08.the night. Themepark and film studios in the US take advantage by

:19:09. > :19:14.hosting Fright Night Evans, 1000s of actors into zombies. Our

:19:15. > :19:18.correspondent has more. There are two ways of becoming a

:19:19. > :19:24.zombie. Being bitten by one. Being towed in a less permanent way. Hours

:19:25. > :19:30.of work go into transforming hundreds of actors every night.

:19:31. > :19:34.Universal studios can put on a convincing display for the Halloween

:19:35. > :19:40.Fright Night. This is not just work. It is also a pleasure. It is so much

:19:41. > :19:44.fun. It is so much fun scaring people, especially the bigger buff

:19:45. > :19:50.guys comfrey with their girlfriends. This is run is funny. When he turned

:19:51. > :19:54.around, I was in his face. He screamed, fell down, called into the

:19:55. > :20:02.next room. He was terrified. I chased him, of course. What kind of

:20:03. > :20:08.weight DNA? If you can get them to run away from you, and get them to

:20:09. > :20:14.cry, you are doing your job. `` what kind of noise DNA? Summaries are big

:20:15. > :20:18.this year, thanks to a Brad Pitt movie and TV series, The Walking

:20:19. > :20:25.Dead. That is good news for make`up artist to have lost work to CGI.

:20:26. > :20:32.This is it. This was the for. People say, we want to be zombies. `` this

:20:33. > :20:36.is what we work for. Halloween is a big deal across the West. Especially

:20:37. > :20:42.here in Los Angeles. Hollywood insiders tend to promote `` bring

:20:43. > :20:47.work home with them, get a few friends home together and put on a

:20:48. > :20:58.show. This is Rick Polizzi's front garden. He does it every year. It

:20:59. > :21:08.always pulls in a crowd. It is less about blood and call. More about the

:21:09. > :21:13.fun side of Halloween. `` gore. Ballot on with people like to put on

:21:14. > :21:16.shows and outdo each other. I think there is a lot of professionals

:21:17. > :21:24.around town they want to try their hand at it. There is some friendly

:21:25. > :21:30.competition. I like it. It is fun. Back at Fright Night, with about

:21:31. > :21:41.out, how scary is a bit of zombie action? Pretty convincing.

:21:42. > :22:01.That is all from us. Goodbye for now.

:22:02. > :22:07.The wind has been causing problems up and down the country in the last

:22:08. > :22:12.few hours. It was a wild night out there. But so windy today. It is

:22:13. > :22:20.blustery at times. There will be some brightness. `` not so windy

:22:21. > :22:25.today. Some heavy showers. Windy across the UK. Mountain snow across

:22:26. > :22:33.the north`east of Scotland elsewhere, blustery showers will

:22:34. > :22:34.feed in. This is the way we start today at 8am. Not as windy as
